Termite Control

Termites are apt to be most prevalent in the warmer countries more than the cooler ones, but if where you live is infected by timber-eating termites, regulating them should be towards the top of your priorities, especially if you are a home-owner or a farmer. Of the 4,000 species of termite, about 400 of them pose a serious threat to timber buildings and crops.

Ants and ant-eaters are the termites natural enemies, but this does not help man to control them, so we have resorted to chemicals. Most of the chemicals used to manage termites are fairly safe to humans, their pets and their livestock, although it does no harm to exercise a little vigilance while spreading them about.

The first thing you ought to do if you would like to banish termites from your home, is comprehend a little about them. They prefer to eat a plank of timber starting at the end-grain and tunneling up inside it, so before you next redecorate your house, saturate all timber in preservative and termite poison particularly the end-grain. Then repaint, stain or varnish everything as usual.

If you make it difficult or unappetizing for them, termites are apt to go for easier pickings. Likewise, if you have walkways, crawling spaces or air ducts, spray them with termiticide. If you have wet areas near the house remedy the cause of the damp, because termites love damp earth.

Clear up any clutter from about the base of your house such as old leaves and weeds, because that holds moisture as well. If you have a stack of garden rubbish, burn it; if you have a compost heap, turn it over on a regular basis and check for termites (and carpenter ants).

In a termite nest, it is only the female workers that go out and scavenge. They then take this back to the colony an give it to the nymphs, the soldiers and the king and queen. If you poison that food source, all those bugs will die and the nymphs in the unhatched eggs will starve to death.

Most termiticides act on two levels, there is the poison to get eaten, but there is also an element to the poison that kills on contact, although it might take some time.

When a termite rubs up against this contact poison, it will go home sooner or later where it will groom and become groomed by its pals, which passes the contact poison around the nest very quickly.

It can take a week or longer for say 90% of the nest to get wiped out, but it could take another month or so for the remaining 10% to die, because they may be getting their food from another source.

However, sooner or later they will begin taking the dead corpses of their dropped comrades outside and as soon as they do that, they will get a brushing of contact poison as well.

When this happens their days are numbered even if the poison is a little bit older and a little less potent. The trick is not to give up too soon and keep checking for a re-infestation, because if they came once, they may come back again.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is at present involved with pictures of termites. If you are interested in this or if you are wondering: What Does A Termite Look Like?. just go to our web site now for some more details.

How To Start Keeping Koi

Are you thinking about putting a koi carp pond in your garden? A koi fish pond is a great improvement to any garden. A garden pond is completely relaxing: watching the fish going about their every day lives is relaxing and listening to the sound of the water moving is relaxing as well. Koi carp are a good choice over some other fish because they grow quite large and breed freely even in captivity.

They are not that difficult to keep either. As with all fish ponds, you need to maintain the quality of the water, but that is not so much of a problem when you know what you are doing. Once you have got the water right, the rest will follow more or less automatically, although you will have to check it often.

Having said that, you ought to not merely hurry out in to the garden, dig a hole and fill it with fish. You need to buff up on the topic first, but there is so much information on koi on the market, that you will have no problem in that respect. There is also lots of information on the Internet.

The first thing to do is dig a hole for your pond, but it better not to have it consistently deep. It should be three or four feet deep at one end and a foot or so deep at the other. The koi will overwinter and sleep in the deeper water, but only the fry will feel comfortable in the shallow end. They will take refuge there to avoid being eaten by the larger fish. Like most fish, koi are cannibals.

Once your pond has been dug out, fill it with water and leave it for a week. Use this week to test your water features such as the water pumps, the filter and the fountain. If you are losing water strive to plug the leak. If you have to keep topping up the water level from the hosepipe, you will probably run into hardship with chlorine.

After a week, the chlorine in that tap water will have dissipated and any surplus oil in your pond apparatus will have been flushed out, so you can put aquatic plants in. Plant them in pots so that you can move them easily if necessary. You ought to also construct some underwater caves for the fish to conceal themselves in.

When you are happy that everything is working well and that the environment is stable (this is easier to do in larger ponds), you can think about buying some koi.

You have to decide why you would like to have koi. Do you want to show them and possibly earn some money? In that case you will have to start with expensive fish, but if you just want to sit and watch them, the cheapest ones are all right. You can probably ask a friend to give you a dozen anyway.

If you procure your fish in the breeding season, you will probably get a couple of gravid (pregnant) females anyway.

A word of warning: fish regulate their environment better than we do. A given amount of water will only hold a precise number of inches of fish. So, as an example, say that every ten gallons of water will be sufficient for ten inches of fish and you have 200 gallons that is 200 inches of fish, which is 20 x 10 inch fish or 40 x 5 inch fish. As the fish grow, they will die to maintain this ratio, so do not buy too many until you understand this ratio.

What Are Bed Bugs?

Most people under seventy years of age in the West will not have seen bed bugs. This is mainly due to enhanced living conditions, DDT and better public education. The DDT was used in the thirties and forties and eradicated the problem in the more wealthy countries.

Bed bugs are a part of the arachnid or spider family, although bed bugs are parasites that suck blood, not all bodily fluids. They will dine on most warm-blooded animals and there is some evidence that humans are not their first preference of prey.

The most widespread form of bed bugs are known as Cimex lectularius by their Latin name. They are quite small but very fast moving bugs and they are members of the spider family, although many of them do not look like spiders at all. Rather, most of them look like little beetles, until they have gorged themselves, after which they can hardly move and are at their most vulnerable.

Bed bugs feed in a similar way to mosquitoes. They insert a tube into the skin of its victim and suck blood out. It is not a great deal to you, about a quarter of a millilitre, but is a lot to them. It allows them to live and procreate.

Bed bugs, unlike their relatives the ticks, are not known to convey any diseases. In fact, they are one of the few insects that do not pass on a disease.

A bedbug bite is comparable to an ant bite in appearance, but it will itch similar a mosquito bite. You will most likely experience a slight swelling with a red dot in the centre and an itch. Not much more.

You can check for bed bugs pretty easily by soaking a bar of soap in a little water for half an hour while you lie on your bed reading a magazine. Then get up and fetch the soap, wet-side down and fling back the bed clothes. Dab up the bed bugs, if there are any with the soft soap. This is a speedy method of getting rid of a small number of bed bugs, but cannot be seen as a resolution.

With regards to the annihilation of an infestation of bed bugs, it depends where you live. If you are in a hotel, the bar of soap will be proof enough of a problem and it is the hotel manager’s duty to provide a solution. If they do nothing, report the hotel to the neighbourhood tourist bureau.

If you live in rented accommodation, it is your landlord’s responsibility to solve the predicament. If he or she is reluctant, then go to the city hall and seek advice.

If the issue is in your own home, then take the skirting boards and architraves off. Spray or paint very powerful insecticide onto the wall and refix the woodwork. If you are still concerned, seal the woodwork off on all sides with mastic or silicone.

These measures will ensure that your house will be free of bed bugs.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on quite a few subjects, but is currently concerned with natural tick repellent. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at tick Repellent For Dogs.

Controlling Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are probably the most ghastly of household pests in many peoples’ eyes. Cockroaches are bad enough, but they do not suck on you. Mosquitoes suck blood and are annoying, but we accept them more than bed bugs. But bed bugs suck your blood when you are asleep and then mess in your bed as a thank you note.

Luckily, these insects do not carry any human diseases that we are conscious of, so they are quite ‘safe’ in that regard, whereas there are quite a couple of deadly diseases that you can acquire from mosquitoes such as malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever amongst others. Still, the majority of of us prefer mosquitoes to bed bugs.

If your home is infested with these bugs, you will surely want to get rid of them, so you will have to know something concerning the lifestyle of these creatures. Bed bugs like to conceal themselves during the day time in cracks, crevices, torn wallpaper and linoleum, broken plaster, a ripped mattress and stacked clothing, books, magazines etc..

The popular belief common until a few decades ago was that bed bugs only liked dirty households, but this is not true. Cockroaches like to scavenge for dropped food as do ants, but bed bugs only consume blood and do not even have mouth-parts to consume fallen food if they were famished.

Therefore, bed bugs do not need to live in a slovenly house, merely in one that is run-down, poorly taken care of or cluttered. If you want to clear up an infestation of bed bugs, the first thing to do is wash all your clothing in hot water or dry-cleaning fluid and then store them in sealed plastic bags.

The next step is to repair anywhere they could be hiding. Stick back or replace any tattered wallpaper and seal off any loose woodwork such as skirting boards and architraves with a line of mastic or filler. Seal the woodwork top and bottom, so that any bed bugs hiding in there will not be able to get out again. This saves attempting to kill them.

Put away all books, piles of newspapers, toys and general clutter and inspect your furniture for wobbly joints. For instance, if a chair or table is a bit ricketty, tighten the screws or mastic the joints together. Plug nail and screw holes with filler or mastic.

Roll up your carpets and check the floor boards. Cork the joints, fill screw holes and check the bead of mastic at the bottom of the skirting boards.

Check the framework of your bed and repair as mentioned above. Are there red or brown smears on your mattress? if so, they could be hiding in your mattress. Sew up any tears and put the mattress in a mattress cover which can be zipped closed in order to trap any bugs inside. Otherwise, perhaps it is time to replace it.

Regular pesticides do not have much effect on bed bugs, so be careful what you purchase. You need something that has an abrasive element in it. Some use finely ground up glass, which may pose a health hazard to you or your pets.

Diatomaceous Earth is safer. Sprinkle or spray it under your carpets and about the base of the skirtings, where bed bugs like to run. Relay your carpets and steam clean them.

Tips For Bathing Your Cat

Cats do not generally need bathing because their mothers teach them how to clean themselves when they are kittens. Furthermore, cats have a valid reputation for not being fond of water too much. However, there may be times when you feel the need for bathing your cat.

For instance, your cat might get old or sick, have been in a bad scrap or be infested with fleas. When these times crop up, you will be grateful for some tips for bathing your cat, because they can become quite nasty about it, inflicting serious scratches that could get infected.

This first thing to do is get everything you need beforehand, because you will probably need to hold your cat down. So, you will want the shampoo, a flannel and a towel close by.

If you know that your cat is going to become a problem, bathe it in a bowl either in the garden shed or in the bathroom, where flying water will not cause much of a difficulty.

Otherwise, you could wash your cat in a bowl on the lawn, but an enclosed space might help your cat feel less threatened and it will be easier to capture it in an confined space if it escapes your grasp.

If your cat really, really loathes bathing and you have trouble holding it, place it in a pillow case with just its head poking out. You can use a cat collar to hold the pillow case in position.

If you use a pillow case, wash your cat through the pillow case as you would a delicate, costly woollen sweater. Use an old collar, because otherwise you might wash out the insecticide that is impregnated in it.

If your cat’s hair is knottted or clotted with blood, you can better remove the clots and cut away the hair with the cat on your lap before you start bathing it.

Whilst preparing the bowl, put a non-slip mat or towel in the bottom and merely half fill it with luke warm water. The shampoo ought to be mild. In fact, you ought to bathe your cat as you would a child who does not like getting soap in its eyes.

Lower your cat gently but fairly quickly into the water and talk to it reassuringly all the time. It will probably hate what you are doing to it, although some breeds are fairly happy to be in water. Yours probably will hot be though and it will become more than a little frightened, so carry on talking to it.

Work quickly and do what you can. It is better to get most of the work done the first time round and have to come for another go later than to really stress your cat out with a long session and who knows, it might become used to it after recurring sessions, if they do not last too long.

When you are finished, wrap the cat in a towel and be nice to it. If it is in a pillow case, wrap the towel about the pillow case and take it off under the towel. When your cat is pretty dry, you can let it go if it wants, because it will dry itself off anyway.

The Dreadful Effects Of Malaria

Malaria, a mosquito-borne sickness caused by mosquito bites that carry a parasite of the genus Plasmodium, is widely common in tropical and subtropical countries in Asia, South and Central America and the Middle East. Malaria is more widespread in areas with lots of rainfall and constant high temperatures that supply the ideal conditions for insects to thrive and multiply.

Malarial bouts begin with multiplication of the plasmodium virus in the red blood cells and could have long-lasting and even deadly consequences.

Malaria begins with headaches, fever and chills and could, in subsequent stages, also lead to coma. Malaria has three stages, the first stage starting with fever, shivering, joint pain, vomiting, anemia, hemoglobinuria, retinal damage and fits.

This could occur for four to six hours every alternate day, every three days or it might happen every four days. As the disease progresses into the second stage, one could experience sensations of heat and dryness, while the third stage could cause extreme fatigue and weakness.

It is however worth noting that the first indications happen around 10 to 15 days after the mosquito bite when it multiplies and bursts the red blood cells.

The effects of malaria especially in children must not be overlooked because a bite from this insect can lead to high intracranial pressure that becomes evident as unusual posture caused by acute brain damage.

Malaria caused by mosquito bites could lead to other significant consequences like cognitive impairment, widespread anaemia and neurological impairment with cerebral malaria. Cerebral malaria could result in retinal whitening that is the foremost distinguishing clinical sign of malaria.

Malaria caused by mosquitoes could in severe cases show up as an enlarged spleen, chronic headache, clots of blood in the brain, enlarged liver, low blood sugar and hemoglobinuria which could lead to renal failure.

Other significant side effects caused by this mosquito bite disease might be dehydration, liver or kidney failure and breathing issues caused by fluid in the lungs.

Rupture of the spleen might lead to internal bleeding with the spread of infection leading to inflammation of the meninges, or membranes, that enclose the brain and spinal cord.

The control of malaria begins with the usage of mosquito nets, the use of insect repellents and the spraying of insecticides in locations where mosquitoes could breed easily.

Home pest control starts with not having water standing around in buckets, tubs and the spraying of insecticides in drains which are ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Mosquito repellents could be chemical based or could also be in the form of herbal and biological pest control with the growing of mosquito repellent plants in the surroundings.

It is best to remember that one way of pest control lies in protecting oneself from mosquito bites by avoiding going out at dawn or dusk. It pays to have mosquito mesh on all the doors and windows at home. Avoiding wearing dark colors and opting for long sleeved shirts and long trousers would also help.

Pest control includes using repellents like creams, lotions and electronic devices. It is best to kill mosquitoes by spraying insecticides, but this ought to be done some time before entering the room. Last but not least, preventing mosquito bites is the most effective pest control each time.

Fundamental Nutritional Information For Horse Owners

Novice horse-owners and occasional riders might not know the precise nutritional requirements of horses. However, this is not unusual because there are a number of variables in calculating what a horse requires in the way of food. The things to take into account while working out the needs of horses are: age, weight and level of activity.

You cannot put garbage in and expect your horse to perform marvellously. You cannot only turn your horse out into a field and expect it to find all that it needs. There are common cases of wild horses dying of starvation, especially if the weather is bad.

Having said that, foraging, which mainly involves eating grass, is a major source of food and it gives the horse an interest, a varied diet and lots of roughage as well. Roughage will also help your horse’s digestive system continue working in the right manner. Just like eating only junk food is not good for the human digestive system.

A mature, working horse requires about 2-2.5% of its body weight in decent quality grass or hay a day. Therefore, a horse of 1,000 pounds will need 20-25 pounds of good, fresh grass or hay a day. If the horse is not worked, it can probably get by on about 1% of its body weight in food.

In the summer, this is almost certainly not much of a problem, but if it is in the winter or if the land cannot sustain the number of horses you keep on it. If this is the case or if you want to breed or work the horse, you will probably have to supplement the forage food with grain or oats. In this case forage food ought to make up around half of a horse’s food for top quality nutrition.

However, it is not only as easy as that either because not all grass and not all hay is of the same quality. The quantity that you feed depends on the quality needed not the quantity, so the feed that you give has to be tested too.

Your pasture is the best and the cheapest way of feeding your horse(s). Here is a rough and ready guide to feeding an average horse of 1,000-1,200 pounds in a decent quality summer pasture. A mare and foal needs 1.75-2 acres; a yearling needs 1.5-2 acres and a weanling needs 0.5-1 acre.

You can crop feed for the winter by cutting grass from another field or by buying it. The hay ought to be pure and not dusty. It should also be free of damp and mould. It might not show any signs of rot or mildew.

There are other feeds that you can supplement with, but you have to do more research. Alfalfa hay can be used but it is not the same as grass hay and you have to carry out other calculations. Oats and grain can also be given, but again more calculations are required. There are services that you can employ to get your horse’s feed checked.

The Four Stages In The Life Of The Mosquito

Mosquitoes, those tiny insects that make us uncomfortable, could also lay us open to malaria, dengue and chikungunya. They live in damp areas and reproduce in water.

The life cycle of this bug begins in holes filled with water, tide water pools in salt marshes, sewage effluent ponds, irrigated pastures and rain water ponds.

The four most important species of mosquitoes, namely Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, and Culiseta, each have their own unique environmental requirements and this helps us to identify a particular species too.

It is a good idea to remember that all mosquitoes have four distinctive phases, namely the egg, larva, pupa and adult stages, in their life cycle. The eggs are laid in water or on damp surfaces and float on them. In addition, species like Culex and Culiseta lay eggs of 100 or more that are found stuck to each other in the fashion of a raft.

However, Anopheles mosquitoes lay their eggs on water and Aedes are known to lay their eggs usually on damp soil. The eggs take two days to hatch out and metamorphose into the larval stage.

The mosquito larvae, known popularly as wrigglers or wigglers, live in water for a period of a week or two depending on the temperature of the water. The larvae swim frequently to the surface of the water to take in oxygen with the aid of siphon tunes.

However, species like the Anopheles have no such mechanism and generally breathe by lying flat on the water. It is interesting to note that mosquito larvae shed their skin four times and after the fourth stage they metamorphose into pupae.

Mosquito pupae, commonly known as “tumblers”, live in water for from one to four days depending mostly on the species and temperature. In this phase, called the resting and non-eating stage in the life cycle, the insect can be observed lying on the surface of water.

In this phase it breathes through its two breathing tubes called trumpets. This is the important and last stage before the mosquito changes into an adult and begins spreading infection. Once the stage is over, the pupa opens and the adult emerges.

Once the adult mosquito is formed, it sits on the surface of the water waiting for its body to dry out and harden. After a time, the mosquito is able to spread its wings and fly. It is interesting to remember that adult female mosquitoes are more aggressive than the males that feed only on the nectar of flowers.

Aedes female mosquitoes are known for their sore and persistent bites especially during the daytime and they attack mostly humans. The Culex specie resembles Aedes, However they are known to strike after dusk and have a preference for domestic and wild birds. They transmit encephalitis or sleeping sickness.

The Culiseta species of mosquito is a moderately aggressive biter that attacks during the evening hours and in the shade. Anopheles mosquitoes are known for spreading malaria in humans.

Lastly, it is useful to understand that most female mosquitoes have to feed on an animal before they can produce eggs, with some dying before laying viable eggs.

In addition, some species live near their breeding place while others fly as far as 100 miles from their breeding spot. Male mosquitoes live a shorter life than female mosquitoes.

Owen Jones publishes pieces on various subjects, but is now concerned with Hand Held Insect Killer devices and static units at Electronic Insect Killers.

No Nonsense Vegetarian Cooking

A lot of people think that they simply would not have the time to be vegetarians. This is because if you cut the meat out of a regular diet, you will become malnourished. You need to replace the nutrients and vitamins available in meat with the same or equivalent nutrients and vitamins in other foodstuffs like lentils, beans, pulses, nuts and legumes.

This means that vegetarians need to plan their meals more precisely that meat-eaters, but it does not have to be an obsession. There are fairly simple ways of acquiring all your mind and body requires.

It is probably true to say that it is harder to plan meals properly whilst you first become a vegetarian, but you will soon get the hang of preparing meals that are nutritious and healthy. However, that gets harder and harder, the more foodstuffs that you exclude from your diet.

Some vegetarians will eat fish but some will not; some vegetarians will eat eggs and dairy products, and others will not. The more dedicated the vegetarian the more a problem it is to replenish the vitamins that you are lacking by not consuming meat.

One manner of looking at how much of a problem it is to become a vegetarian is by remembering that meat needs to be cooked but fruit and vegetables do not (or not all of them anyway).

Sandwiches are also a very fast vegetarian snack and you should take full advantage of all the different kinds of bread on the market to vary the flavours and the benefits from the ingredients.

Every cook should understand how to create a casserole and this is also true of vegetarian cooks. Maybe the best manner of cooking a casserole is in a crock pot, so if you have not got one yet, buy one as soon as you can. After using your crock pot for a week, you will be asking yourself how you ever found the time to live without one before.

You can prepare invaluable vegetarian casseroles for your family when you are at work or doing something else and there are thousands of vegetarian crock pot recipes without having to resort to using a meat recipe but just leaving out the meat.

The attraction of a crock pot is that you can prepare all sorts of food in it, not only casseroles. You can create puddings, breads and cakes, but that can become the topic of future articles. The other godsend to the busy cook is the microwave. You can microwave potatoes and other vegetables in minutes instead of roasting them for hours with the meat.

So next time you or someone else says that you do not have time to become a vegetarian, bear in mind that technology has moved on from the Seventies and it is a lot easier nowadays. There is a lot more known about vegetarianism now and that knowledge is much more broadly available – particularly over the Web and there are also better cooking devices like programmable crock pots and microwaves.

Hybrid Cars

In essence, hybrid electric cars have two engines: a conventional petrol or diesel engine (the same as you would find in any modern car and an electric, battery powered engine, as you might find in a milk float or a forklift truck. The magical difference is that the car’s on board computer judges which engine is necessary to provide the power needed by the driver and turns it on.

Therefore, if you are accelerating to cruising speed for motorway driving; going up hill or overtaking, the car will probably use its liquid fuel engine but then as you ease off the accelerator to, say, cruise down the motorway; go down the other side of the hill or to drive in slow traffic, the computer will turn off the liquid fuel engine and turn on the electric engine.

The electric engine can be regarded as free to run, because it runs off batteries which are recharged by the car whilst it is using petrol or diesel and at some other times, such as while it is braking (and the alternators are recharging in both modes). You should never have to recharge your car’s batteries overnight as they do with forklift trucks.

There are in essence two kinds of hybrid cars: the semi hybrids and the full hybrids.

The semi hybrids have the same sort of set up: two engines, one running on liquid fuel and the other running on batteries, but the electric motor is not capable of running the car on its own. It is there to ‘assist’ the petrol or diesel engine.

In this type of hybrid, the electric motor is called an ‘assist’. These semi hybrids will save money on fuel, but whilst the car is moving, you are burning fuel all the time.

The main difference when it comes to the full hybrid is that both engines are capable of powering the car autonomously. Whilst you are running on electricity, you are running at zero expense to your wallet and at zero expense to the environment, unless you are actually pushing the car and then both engines might be working in union.

This changing of power sources is done robotically without any intrusion from the driver. In the case of the Prius, for instance, this remarkable achievement is accomplished by what Ford calls its Hybrid Synergy Drive. Other firms have their equivalent to the HSD.

In order to get the most out of these full hybrids, you actually need to be doing an ‘average amount’ of driving under ‘average’ or ‘mixed’ circumstances. For instance, if you are driving in traffic, the car will try to use the electric engine, but if all you do is drive in inner city traffic jams the batteries will soon become depleted and you will be driving on liquid fuel all the time, which sort of negates the main reason for spending a great deal extra on a hybrid in the first instance.

The car needs to travel on open motorways in order to recharge its batteries so that it can utilize them once it gets back into town. If you just drive in town traffic, you may be better off getting a little run around instead.

Equine Colic And Your Horse

If you have or have had a horse, you will probably have heard of equine colic. However, when you strive to find out what equine colic is, you run up against a brick wall. This is because the term is an old one, dating from the days when surgery and the knowledge of how bodies work was in its childhood. The term ‘equine’ naturally refers to ‘horses’ – from the Latin, but ‘colic’?

Well, ‘colic’ refers to any (spasmodic) pain originating in the stomach, intestines or bowels, but what colic does not refer to is a specific illness. Therefore, if you say: ‘My horse is suffering from colic’, you are saying that your horse has abdominal pains, but you do not know what is causing them or you are not saying, if you do know.

In other words colic refers to indications not an actual illness. You will usually have to call in a vet if you would like to unearth the cause of the pain. Occasionally, these abdominal pains pass on their own like flatulence, but other times it can be indicative of a problem, especially if the colic lasts more than an hour or so.

If the pain persists for more than a few hours, you need to take the decision whether to call in the vet or not. This is never cheap as all animal-lovers know and if surgery is necessary then costs will go through the roof.

The decision is a problematic one and depends mainly on the value of the animal to you. Numerous horses die of undefined ‘colic’ because the owner will not or cannot pay hundreds of dollars for a vets help.

Experience will help the horse owner to judge whether the cause of the colic will pass or whether surgery is necessary and a good vet will give you an honest opinion for the price of a call-out charge, which will normally be about $100..

It is hard for the young or greenhorn owner of a horse to know if their animal has a problem, but when an animal, including a human, is off its food, you can be fairly sure that something is not right.

It may just have consumed something mildly poisonous or it may have flatulence, but it may have eaten something like a nail by accident as well. If a horse keeps looking at its flanks or even nipping at them, there might be a problem too.

Your horse may have a blockage or constipation if you see him having difficulty doing his business. This might pass or it might take a laxative to ease him or it could be something more serious.

We have all seen horses rolling in rapture in a field, but if your horse is rolling in another fashion – you think it is not the same, that may also be an sign that he has a problem. So would undue sweating after little or no exercise.

An experienced horse person will have seen all this before and have an notion what to do, but it is very worrying for the novice.

Facts About The Collie Dog.

The Collie dog makes an excellent sporting dog and can be trained to do the work of the Pointer and the Setter, as well as that of the Water Spaniel and the Retriever. He can be trained to carry out the work of other breeds as well. It is smart at hunting, having an excellent nose, is a first-rate vermin-killer, and a most faithful guard dog and buddy.

Not much is known with confidence of the source of the Collie, but his craftiness and his external looks would seem to indicate a relationship with the wild dog. Buffon was of opinion that he was the true dog of nature, the standard and model for the whole canine species.

He thought the Sheepdog superior in instinct and intellect to all other breeds, and that, with a character which other breeds do not share. It is the only creature that is born completely trained for the assistance of man.

At the shows this kind of dog is almost always at the top of the class. He is thought to be the most tractable, and is certainly one of the most agile. The second most popular breed of this type is the smooth-coated variety, which is a hard-working, useful dog, well adapted for hill work and usually really fleet of foot.

He is not so sweet in temper as the black and white, and is slower to make friends. There is not a more elegant and physically good-looking dog to be seen than the show Collie of the present period. Bred from the old working animal, he is now practically a distinct breed.

The skull should be flat, fairly wide between the ears, and gradually tapering towards the eyes. There should only be a small depression at the bottom. The width of skull inevitably depends upon the combined length of skull and muzzle; and the whole must be considered in connection with the size of the animal. The cheeks should not be full or outstanding.

The muzzle ought to be of a decent length, tapering to the nose, and must not show weakness. Whatever the colour of the dog, the nose must be black. The teeth should be of a decent size, sound and level; very slight unevenness is allowed.

The mouth should be clean-cut and powerful. The eyes are a very important feature, giving expression to the dog; they should be of medium size, set a little at an angle, of almond shape and brown colour apart from in the case of merles, when the eyes are often (one or both) blue and white or china; expressing high intelligence, with a quick, alert expression when they are listening.

The ears should be small and moderately wide at the base, located not too close together but on the top of the skull and not on the elevation of the head. When in repose they should be carried thrown back, but when on the alert brought forward and carried semi-erect, with tips slightly sagging in the posture of listening.

The neck should be muscular, powerful, of reasonable length, and a little arched. The body should be burly, with well sprung ribs, deep chest, fairly broad behind the shoulders, which should be sloping, loins very powerful..

The fore legs must be straight and strong, leaning neither in nor out at the elbows, with a fair amount of bone; the forearm rather fleshy, the pasterns showing suppleness without weakness. The hind-legs should be muscular at the thighs, clean and sinewy below the hocks, with well-bent stifles. The feet should be oval in shape, soles well padded, and the toes arched and close together.

Its general character is to be a lissom, lively dog, his deep chest showing lung power, his neck strength, his sloping shoulders and well bent hocks representing speed, and his expression of high intelligence. It should be a fair length in the leg, giving him more of a racy than a plodding appearance.

In short, a Collie should demonstrate endurance, activity, and intelligence, with free and true actions. In height dogs should be 22 ins. to 24 ins. at the shoulders, bitches 20 ins. to 22 ins. The weight for dogs is 45 to 65 lbs., bitches 40 to 55 lbs. The smooth collie only differs from the rough in its coat, which ought to be hard, dense and quite smooth.

Do You Know The Symptoms Of Dengue?

Dengue fever is the result of a virus that is transferred from person to person by the bite of a tiger striped mosquito. Dengue normally starts with high fever, chills, headache, pain behind the eyes, and joint and muscle pain making the individual look flushed with a rash appearing about three to four days after the onset of fever. The rash spreads to the rest of the body and shows up often as an swelling of the lymph nodes.

Dengue, in its most common form has an incubation phase of about |five to eight days from the start of fever. It is worth noting that a person has fever for about four to seven days and it is common for most people to recover without any major complications. However, long term effects and complications cannot be fully ruled out in all cases, with some taking many months to recover and some having fatal recurrences.

This arises particularly in regions where dengue is endemic and there is the chance of repeated infections and relapses. The most serious of effects or complications are dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS).

Dengue hemorrhagic fever known as Hemorrhagic dengue, Dengue shock syndrome, Philippine hemorrhagic fever, Thai hemorrhagic fever or Singapore hemorrhagic fever can lead to dengue shock syndrome and is fatal in around 1/20 cases that have a re-infection.

The severity of the impact of dengue in the form of dengue hemorrhagic fever rests in essence on one contracting a different virus after building immunity to one particular sort of virus. The risk factors increase with having antibodies to dengue virus from a prior infection, being younger than 12, female, or Caucasian.

Look out for the effects of dengue hemorrhagic fever in the person being not only restless and irritable, but also becoming sweaty and developing shock-like symptoms. Minute spots of blood and bleeding could take place on the skin with substantial patches below the skin and minor injuries resulting in severe bleeding. Some of the early symptoms that might become noticed are decreased appetite, fever, headache, joint pain, malaise, muscle pain, and vomiting.

Then you could notice more acute indications like restlessness followed by skin discoloration caused by the flow of blood into the tissues from ruptured blood vessels in mucous membranes especially in the mouth. There could also be a sweeping rash followed by flat round spots caused by internal bleeding in the skin from the capillaries.

This dengue situation could worsen and show up as a shock-like state, cold clammy extremities, and sweatiness. A GP could examine the patient and find other indications like enlarged liver, reduced blood pressure, red eyes, swollen glands, and weak and rapid pulse.

The treatment might include a cure of the indications and a transfusion of fresh blood or platelets to correct bleeding concerns, IV fluids and electrolytes to right electrolyte imbalances and oxygen therapy for treating the unusually low blood oxygen level and hydration with intravenous (IV) fluids to treat dehydration. In addition, supervision in an intensive care unit is usually essential.

It is vital to get to your medical professional in time during recurrent attacks and to make sure of personal hygiene and cleanliness at home and its environs. Using fully-covering clothing, mosquito netting, mosquito repellent containing DEET and avoiding travelling while mosquitoes are prevalent would help to contain dengue.

How Will I Recognize Bedbugs?

I presume you already know that bedbugs have made a revival in the West. Bedbugs were practically totally eradicated in western Europe, the United States and Canada in the 1950′s, but have been resurfacing in ever larger numbers since around 1995. It is assumed that this is due to more numerous foreign holidays and increased immigration..

You see, bedbugs get around by hitching a lift on our clothing and then jumping off when it gets quiet and warm enough again. The poor little creatures are actually quite shy, you know, which is why you could have a burgeoning family of them in your house long before you become bitten. And bedbugs can go for six months without having to feed.

Bedbugs are small, usually brownish beetles that look a bit banded, because of the hairs on their back. They have a long pointy beak for sucking blood and can move astonishingly quickly if disturbed. Some Individuals say that they cannot be seen with the naked eye, but this only applies to those of us with very poor eyesight. A bedbug is around the size, colour and shape or an apple pip on legs.

In fact, you may never see a bedbug in your room, but you might see remnants of its activity. If you see brown smears on your sheets, they are bedbug droppings but if you see red streaks, that is your blood. You may also see black spots, which are also droppings and hollow insect cases, which is where they have shed a skin on their way to maturity.

Those who have knowledge of bedbugs say that you do not have to see them, you can smell them. They say that, their smell is very distinctive, but you would have to speak to quite an old person to describe it for you as most individuals under 60 will not have had many dealings with bedbugs, if any at all.

Bedbug bites affect people in different ways. Some people react quite badly to the bites whilst others might scarcely notice them at all. However, most of us notice some red marks that itch. A little like flea bites.

I suppose that you are wondering how you can get rid of these little bugs by now. Well, here is the bad news – bedbugs are notoriously a problem to be rid of. In fact, if you have an infestation of bedbugs, you ought to notify your landlord and the health authorities but if you own the property yourself, you will almost certainly have to pay to get the exterminators in as pesticides and insecticides are practically useless against them.

The best way to deal with bedbugs is not to let them acquire a foothold in your premises. Most of us pick up a bedbug when on holiday, staying in a hotel at home or when using public transport or in public places like cinemas.

So, inspect your clothing, especially under the collar and in the pockets. The only surefire way of killing bedbugs is the use of heat, so if you find one on your coat, put your garments in the tumble dryer on full heat to kill the bedbug, its friends and its eggs.

Should You Bring Up Your Baby As A Vegetarian?

If you are reading this article, the chances are that you are at least fifteen years of age, so if you were to make a decision to become a vegetarian at this moment, you would have at least fifteen yeas of eating meat behind you and it is difficult to change the habits of a lifetime.

Lifestyle alterations are the most difficult to achieve, so it is easier to maintain a vegetarian lifestyle, if you have never consumed meat at all. Therefore, the baby of a vegetarian mother has the best chance of maintaining a vegetarian life.

It is a matter of conscience whether a vegan mother would feed her baby on breast milk. There is no reason why she should not do so. Her body is producing milk for her baby, yet she might not want to give her baby ‘animal fat products’. It is a bizarre decision to have to take.

After the baby has been weaned, the options are easier again. You can make fantastic baby food recipes with fresh fruit and vegetables and a blender. Soya is another vegetable product that is useful for your baby’s vegetarian diet because it is one of the few vegetable sources of protein.

Soya is also very adaptable, although not always recommended for very young babies. You can eat or drink soya and you can bake, boil or fry it. It is pretty bland on its own, so it takes on the flavours of whatever you cook it with, so it can be used to push up the protein content of practically anything.

If you are intent on raising your child as a vegetarian or even a vegan, you have to be very wary after weaning, not to replace your own milk with cow’s milk. However, this is where you will have to take guidance from your doctor or midwife.

Do not let philosophy and principles stand in the way of your baby’s health. If your doctor chooses that your baby actually needs the things that are to be had in cow’s milk, then so be it, unless you seek out a vegetarian doctor for a second opinion.

At about six months of age, babies can start eating cereals. Rice is one of the easiest to digest. You can make a very thin rice meal by boiling the rice in water until it practically disappears, leaving that characteristic white water. Millions of Asian babies grow up on rice water each year.

As a vegetarian of some experience, you will have a decent concept about which combinations of food fulfill dietary needs, so you will be able to use this information to make sure that your baby does not go short of anything, and pay particular attention to any deficiencies that the doctor notices.

Obviously, you have to tell your doctor from the beginning that you are a vegetarian and that you want your baby to be brought up in the same way, because that could well have an impact on the vitamins or supplements that the doctor gives your baby.

Plants That Repel Mosquitoes

Those small, annoying insects, mosquitoes, have always made us run helter-skelter because they are thought to be carriers of diseases from person to person, animal to animal and from human to animals. How true it is that in Africa alone mosquitoes that kill one child under the age of five each 30 seconds, are the foremost cause of infection and account for the largest number of deaths all around the planet.

The use of mosquito repellents in the form of mosquito coils, electronic mosquito repellents, mosquito repellent creams, herbal mosquito lotions and plants help keep mosquitoes at bay. Furthermore, insecticides sprayed on plants could also help.

However some individuals could be allergic to these ways and suffer from problems of the skin, nasal cavity and throat. So it is highly advisable and environmentally friendly to take into account plants to repel mosquitoes.

Citronella, a plant that gets to a height of two feet, gives an annual bloom of lavender color flowers and finds its position as one of the most well-known mosquitoes repelling plants . You can find these plants mostly in places of warm weather. The oil of the citronella plant is used in scents and other herbal products due to their mosquito repelling quality.

If you love raising marigold of the African and French variety in your garden, you have a mosquito repellent right in your garden. Marigolds, growing to the height of between six inches and three feet, grow well in sunny climates and hates the shade because it slows its growth process. The marigold plant of both the French and African species are able to repel mosquitoes because of the peculiar smell that they have.

Rosemary, a bush that grows up to four to five feet high, is a highly-rated mosquito repellent. This shrub grows larger than others and has blue flowers. Rosemary, a drought resistant shrub is also used in many fish recipes as an ingredient.

In addition, green lemon grass acts as a powerful mosquito repellent, because of the citronella oil enclosed in it. This perennial plant of India and Thailand grows up to a couple of feet high, provides us with lemon grass oil and acts as a pesticide and preservative. The tea manufactured out of lemon grass proves to be very refreshing.

Lavender, the beautiful purple colored plant, not just increases the attractiveness of your garden, but also repels mosquitoes. This plant is a gardener?s favourite. It grows to a height of four feet, and needs warm weather. The flowers of this plant also find use in bouquets and lavender oil is extracted from it.

Catnip and horse mint, both belonging to the mint family prove to make powerful mosquito repellents. Catnip oil made from the catnip plant and horse mint with pink bloom also serves as a mosquito repellent.

Garlic the miracle vegetable that is used in recipes also repels mosquitoes. The strong smell of bulbs of garlic assists to stave off mosquitoes. In addition, herbs like basil, penny royal, and ageratum are also known for their mosquito repellent qualities.

Hence there is no need to feel that these little creatures can irritate you at their leisure and take control of your life. You can take control of their life without using chemical smells or using costly electronic items. It is the case that growing mosquito repellent flowers also makes for a beautiful garden.

Dangerous Dog Treats

Every dog likes to be given a tasty tidbit as a treat and every dog-owner likes to give them. But do you know whether the dog treats that you are giving are healthy or dangerous for your pet, because there are both sorts on the market. In fact, there are hundreds of types of dog treats of all sizes, shapes and colours.

No matter what you feed your dog, it is worth checking whether he has eaten it all and if not why not. There could be a number of factors, but each dog owner ought to know how much their dog normally eats and what he especially likes. Not eating usually is often a sign that your dog is ill or going to get ill. Some foodstuffs can cause this sign though as well.

Treats that are made to scrub your dog’s teeth often come in the shape of a bone, not that that is significant to the dog, He knows it is not a bone sure enough. But most dogs do like them. A difficult can occur if your dog has powerful jaws and tries to consume big pieces in one go.

These substantial, slightly soggy chunks can get wedged in the throat or intestines causing blockages. Frequently these blockages will dissolve away over a couple of hours, but if they are resulting in breathing concerns or discomfort, you may have to take your dog to a vet.

Rawhide chews also come into this category although they come with concerns of their own as well. Rawhide chews are useful for scraping plaque and tartar off your dog’s teeth that would otherwise lead to bacteria, bad teeth and foul breath, but they can also get lodged in the animal’s throat or intestines, so try to buy pieces that your dog cannot swallow but has to chew on.

Rawhide is an animal by-product, so it has to be preserved to prevent it going rancid. Strive to find out what that preservative is and find out whether it is perilous or not. It has been reported that some countries have been using arsenic to preserve their chews, this is of course not a good idea and is one of the most dangerous dog treats.

Chocolate is lethal to dogs. Not many adults and very few kids are aware of this, because you frequently see people giving their dog a square of chocolate. The reason these dogs do not die a horrible death is that most of the chocolate that we can buy these days does not contain much chocolate. It is chocolate-flavoured paste. Look on the list of ingredients on the wrapper of your next bar of chocolate to verify what I mean.

However, different countries have different regulations concerning what can be called chocolate. The European Union is pretty decent, America not so decent and Thailand is appalling. Normally, bakers’ chocolate is the most powerful, which makes a chocolate covered chocolate cake the most dangerous for dogs – exactly the type of thing they can steal from the picnic blanket.

Sickness, uneven heartbeat, ‘craziness’, hyperactivity, a visit to the vets for a stomach pump or death are usually the result.

Dogs love bones and they are good for them too (which makes you ask yourself why so many dog chews are purchased). However, not all bones are good for dogs. Cats grind everything up small, which is why they can be safely given fish, chicken and turkey bones. But dogs tend to wolf items down, so never give these bones to your dog.

Fish bones are thin and sharp and can stick in the throat or gut as with humans requiring surgery, but chicken and turkey bones splinter into these fine slithers as well when crunched. Do not give them to a dog as a treat.

Should Children Be Exposed To Mosquito Repellent Products?

Mosquitoes have caused various life threatening diseases in tropical countries such as India particularly during the monsoons. These small creatures carry disease causing viruses which cause malaria, filaria and dengue fever from one person to the other, from one animal to the other and from animal to human and vice versa.

It is wise to note that mosquito repellents help to ward off mosquitoes for a short time dependent on the body sort, climatic conditions and state of the body, but can never obliterate them fully.

You could have a broad assortment of mosquito repellents, but not all of them may prove suitable and perfect for your infant. The choice varies between synthetic chemicals and plant derivatives that are found in the form of creams, lotions, sprays, wipes, roll-on sticks, foams, liquid vaporizers, sprays, coils, and mats. In addition, you can get electronic items that depend on electromagnetic fields and ultrasound waves to repulse mosquitoes.

Your selection of the best repellent depends purely on your baby?s needs and the precautions that need to be taken. It is best to check with your child?s pediatrician or a dermatologist that could suggest the best mosquito repellent.

Pediatricians advise against the use of mosquito repellent creams and lotions on infants below the age of 6 months as these chemicals could cause allergic and toxic reactions if applied directly on the baby?s skin.

However, it is advised that if you must use a cream or lotion it is best to consult your child specialist and then put the repellent on the child?s clothes being sure you avoid areas where the child could stick it in its mouth.

The use of liquid vaporizers, coils, sprays, and foams are extremely unadvisable as they could cause breathing allergies and other problems in your baby. In case you should, take your baby in when the fumes are given off.

The use of baby mosquito nets and natural or herbal remedies are safer until the infant is older. Try lighting citronella candles to ward off mosquitoes in your infant’s room.

It is worth mentioning that essential oils like margosa, citronella, peppermint, and eucalyptus can help ward off mosquitoes, however it is unadvisable to apply these oils directly on the skin as they are strong.

However putting a few drops on the bedding would help. Mopping the floors with a few drops of essential oils added to the water would help and prove safe also.

Prevention would be better rather than repelling mosquitoes particularly for children. Maintaining a spotless home and avoiding stagnant water standing in coolers, flowerpots, open drains, small ponds, bird baths, pets’ utensils and other bodies of water and adding a couple of drops of kerosene oil in the water would thwart mosquitoes breeding.

In addition, make certain your child does not perspire when you leave it unsupervised, for mosquitoes breed in moisture. It is best to dress your baby in light coloured clothes fully covering the body, which would also help prevent mosquito bites.

Furthermore, avoiding strong fragrances in the form of lotions, soap, oils or floral scented perfumes or room fresheners would help preclude the attraction of mosquitoes. Also, storing food covered over always will help prevent the breeding of mosquitoes.

Last but most important, fix wire mesh and screens on all doors and windows and keep them closed all the time especially at dawn and dusk and help your baby breathe fresh air but with freedom from mosquitoes.

West Highland White Terriers

By about the 1700′s, the Isle of Skye and other highland areas in Scotland were already breeding lots of small terriers. Scottish breeds were separated into two types: the Skye terriers and the Dandie Dinmont terriers.

The Dandie Dinmonts were categorized as a solitary breed, whereas the Skyes were deemed to include the Scotties, the Cairns and the West Highland White Terriers also called Westies.

West Highland White Terriers were hybrids of crossed Cairns, Scotties and Dandies terriers. These hybrids were reckoned to be good hunters and loyal. In fact, many members of the Scottish royal family owned terriers that were very much the same as the Westies of today.

One folktale concerns a Westie that stopped a mother from constantly yelling at her daughter. Each time the mother shouted at her teenage daughter, the Westie would attack the mother. The dog’s aggression got to such a level during the years that the mother gave up shouting at her daughter.

It turned out that the girl was stroking and rewarding the dog for his protection after every bawling out from her mother. Many would say that the daughter was able to help her mother to modify her violent ways although she was also helping herself by rewarding the dog for its behavior.

West Highland White Terriers can live in or outdoors, so are very flexible. They have a wiry coat of about two inches in thickness covering a dense fur coat which is capable of keeping them warm. Westies are in essence small dogs of between 10 and 12 inches in height and 13 and 22 pounds in weight.

West Highland White Terriers like to dig and bark, but they also like company. They like well-behaved children and they like to run after cats. They defend their property and territory enthusiastically.

As a breed, they can suffer some ailments such as: chronic skin problems, Perthe’s disease (hip issues), jawbone calcification, cranio-mandibular osteopathy (lion jaw), patella luxation, a disorder in the kneecap, liver ailments, deafness and congenital heart disease

However, there are steps that you can take to look after your Westie. For example, they ought to be brushed regularly using a brush with stiff bristles. You ought to bathe them only when necessary, but their whole coat ought to be shaved at least twice a year and trimmed each four months. The fur around the eyes and ears ought to be trimmed as well.

History shows that in 1620, King James 1 requested some small white dogs from Argyleshire, Scotland. Colonel Malcolm, who was considered the creator of Poltalloch terriers, that are very similar to the Westies of today, accidentally shot his dark terrier. From then on he swore to have just white terriers.

In the 19th Century, terriers that were very similar to the Westies were known as Roseneath terriers in honour of the Duke of Argyle’s interest and patronage of this breed. Roseneath was the name of his estate at Dumbartonshire.

In the first ever dog show, organized in the late 1800′s, the Westies were known as White Scottish Terriers. In 1904, they were reclassified as West Highland White Terriers.

During the mid-1900′s, breeders of the Cairns in Argyle chose white puppies from the litters and interbred them to obtain white Cairns. However, in 1917, the American Kennel Club ruled that Cairns could be listed if they have the Westies’ roots.

Purchasing Your First Ferret

If you want to purchase a ferret for the first time, it is almost certainly best to purchase it from a breeder. This is because, if you create a friend of the breeder you can ring up for guidance at any time, whereas if you purchase from a pet shop, the vendor or the shop assistant may not know much about them.

Ferrets take a bit of taking care of. They need more attention than a cat or even a dog and although most individuals can muddle through taking care of a cat or a dog, you need to learn how to take care of a ferret.

Look on line or in Yellow Pages for a ferret breeder in your region and go along on the spur of the moment, unexpected. In that way, you will see what the ferret farm is actually like, not something spruced up for your visit. If it is dirty or smelly, look for another one.

You can purchase a ferret at any age, as you can with dogs, but most individuals like to buy a baby and train it themselves. Young ferrets have limited distance vision, so you have to keep their environment clean and safe to avoid injury to their eyes or other parts.

In order to help keep their cage clean, you ought to toilet-train your ferret and in order to keep your house clean you ought to make it ferret-proof to stop ferrets entering your home and literally destroying it.

A ferret costs around $100, but you will also require a cage, litter box, toys and vaccinations. You might require a license to own a ferret where you live, but the breeder will be able to advise you on that. A vaccination against distemper might or might not be needed by law, but it is a very good idea if you value your pet.

If you know nothing of ferrets, the first thing to look for is the eyes. The eyes ought to be quick and the animal should be alert. Look out for distemper which can manifest itself in dull eyes, lethargy, runny nose and dull coat. you need a hyperactive ferret because that is what ferrets are like – very hyperactive.

Ferrets sleep a great deal. Perhaps 18 hours a day, but when they wake up, they are full of energy and need plenty of exercise. They have to run about, forage and hunt. Ferrets feed on live birds by preference, but they will take other food as well. Make sure that this food is sugar-free and is high in protein

There are toys that you can supply your ferret with to amuse itself, but these are no substitute for real exercise. However, herein lies the problem, because ferrets are fast and climb trees, so if you have not trained it to come when called, you might never see it again after you open the cage.

Teach your ferret to respond to a name or whistle by rewarding it when it does come as you would a puppy and bathe the animal every now and again as you would a dog.

Common Health Issues For Cats

If you have not had a cat or other pet before, it might come as a surprise to you to find out that they sometimes become ill. Some diseases are hereditary and some are acquired, but most are preventable and all are insurable. You can have your cat inoculated against the most prevalent diseases and you can take out insurance against vet’s bills.

However, besides illnesses, there are other things that can go wrong like injury from fights and worms, fleas and ticks. Worms are easy to cope with. The most widespread cat worms are tapeworms, round worms and hookworms. Cats will have worms because they consume carrion and wild meat. The easiest method to inhibit worms is to give your cat a tablet each six months. Worms are serious and must be treated or they may kill your cat.

Cats do a lot of grooming and this means that they end up consuming a great deal of fur. This fur forms fur balls in their stomachs. Usually a cat will make itself vomit by eating grass to cough them up, but they may pass into the guts where they may create blockages. This can become serious if they do not go through the cat.

If your cat goes off its food, is constipated or has a painful stomach (does not like to be tickled), it could be a blockage and you ought to take your cat to the vet. You can help your cat out by grooming it frequently to remove loose hair. Most cats like to be groomed with a soft brush or a velvet glove.

Cats suffer from urinary tract infections (UTI’s) just like humans do. However, in humans it mostly has an effect on women, it cats it usually affects Toms. You can suspect a UTI if your cat’s urine smells very bad or if it has trouble urinating. If you observe either of these problems you have to take it to the vet for tablets.

What individuals call feline distemper is not actually distemper – it is panleukopenia which is not even related to canine distemper. It is equally as lethal though and not a lot of cats survive it, although it can take years to actually kill your cat. The safest manner of safeguarding your cat against panleukopenia is to have it vaccinated against panleukopenia when it is a kitten.

Panleukopenia is extremely contagious, so if your cat has it, you should keep it isolated until it dies or have it put down. Panleukopenia is not perilous to humans, but you might carry the virus around with you and even pass it on to your friends’ cats – something that they will not thank you for.

In general, the more time your cat spends out of doors, the more frequently you ought to take it to the vets for a check up. Once or two times a year should be enough. At the check up, you can have your cat checked for parasites, fleas ticks, lesions, infections and panleukopenia and you can buy your anti-worm tablet at the same time.

Jack Russell Terriers

If you are looking for a canine companion, you ought to put the Jack Russell terrier on your shortlist. Some of the best traits about the Jack Russell terrier is that they are small, inexpensive to feed, active, short-haired and intelligent. The Jack Russell terrier is a ideal dog for an older person, or someone living in an apartment.

The first Jack Russells were bred by a young theology student named John Russell studying at Oxford University in the early 19th. Century. It is believed that John Russell liked the look of his milkman’s dog and used it for breeding. The dog, a bitch named Trump was white and had patches of brown coloured hair on its eyes and ears.

Terriers are small, dynamic dogs. The name ‘terrier’ comes from the Latin word ‘terra’ meaning ‘earth’, because terriers like to dig and go to ground whilst hunting. Terriers have been used to hunt all types of small animals such as rats, moles, badgers, foxes and rabbits. The Jack Russell descends from fox terriers.

Jack Russell terriers like to run and dig, so they will push their owners to go for frequent walks and they have a very persuasive personality. The word ‘dogged’ could have been derived from them – they just do not give up!

Because of all their digging and rooting around, they can get pretty muddy which means bathing and grooming, although being short-haired animals, this is not a problematic task.

Nowadays, hunting with animals is banned in many countries, but this dog’s nature is still to hunt. They are particularly good ratters and can clear up an infestation of rats in short time. They are therefore also good dogs to keep on a farm or substantial garden where rodents could be a difficulty.

Terriers also make very good guard dogs. They will protect your property in the garden or in your home. They are very territorial and, although they will not usually molest or bite strangers, they will certainly let you know that there is a stranger about.

Having said that, it is a wise thing to train your dog. If you are not sure how to do this or what to teach it, go to dog training groups or buy a book. Jack Russell terriers are very intelligent and love dealings with their masters, so they learn quickly and readily if you start them young enough, because they are also fairly strong-willed dogs.

I have heard stories of Jack Russell terriers allowing strangers into a building but not allowing them to leave without being told to. This seems like a great way of catching burglars.

These dogs make great family pets, but they do not always get on with other dogs that they are not living with. This can lead to fighting and injuries.

Apart from injuries in fights, Jack Russells enjoy pretty good health. They are not prone to any major diseases like some other breeds are. They also live a long time frequently reaching 13 and fifteen with some Jack Russell terriers reaching 18, 19 and even 20 years of age.

How Should I Go Shopping Online For An Air Purifier?

Have you come to the conclusion that you want an air purifier for your home? You may think it is a good idea if the air in your home is ‘unclean’ in any way or even if it is damp and mildewy. There are many reasons why a home and its residents can benefit from an air purifier especially if you live on a main road or near a factory. Too many hairy pets can also be a cause of allergies which can be cleaned up by the use of an air purifier.

If you do make a decision to buy one, there are several different sorts to choose from and various price levels. You can also shop on or off line. In fact, the cost of these devices is frequently lower on line because the vendor does not have the overheads of a bricks and mortar shop front, although you will have to remember to add postage and package and any local taxes that might be appropriate. It is still usually cheaper to buy on line rather than in the shopping mall.

However, both methods of shopping have their advantages and disadvantages, so we will take a closer look at these next. Really what you need to do is compare both methods of shopping and see which is best for you. The way that I do that is by going on line and typing something like ‘air purifiers for sale’ into a search engine.

The results that come up will be numerous, probably well over 100,000, so pick a dozen or so and do some research. Amazon is normally a good place to read users’ reviews. Make notes on brand names, prices, functions and capabilities. Then take these notes to the Mall and go looking for air purifiers.

With your newly found information of these devices, you can question sales personnel and compare prices. Write more notes and do some comparisons.

Do not forget to add postage and packing and local taxes to the on line prices. Another item that you should consider is the warranty. What occurs if the purifier breaks down? Will you have to send it hundreds of miles away to be repaired? Who will pay for that?

It is always easier to claim on a warranty if it can be done locally. However, what are the chances of it breaking down anyway? It depends on the length of the guarantee actually.

Some of the functions that you should come across whilst researching your prospective air purifier are whether it uses an air filter or not, whether it can cool air or not and whether it can dehumidify or not. These three features are convenient for different conditions, but there is no point paying for something that you will never use – the dehumidifier for instance.

Some individuals prefer a device that does not require an air filter or which has a washable filter, but this is normally because of laziness and false economy. There are numerous different kinds of filters for different pollutants so they are more flexible and ultimately far better.

Teenage Vegetarians And How You Can Help

Teenagers are very impressionable and tend to become more left-wing than their parents, because they are under the influence of their teachers, who tend to be more left-wing as well. This tends to make teenagers more in touch with environmental issues and other world problems. This can send teenagers off in many directions, and one of the most well-liked, especially among teenage girls, is vegetarianism.

This phase frequently passes for one reason or another. Sometimes the parents cannot be bothered to cater to their new diet and sometimes the teenager simply misses bacon sandwiches as well much to keep up the diet. However, many do stick to their principles or come back to them later on in life.

Their children going vegetarian is often a cause for anxiety for parents, but it should not be. If your teenagers take up vegetarianism you will probably be concerned that they get enough protein, but that can be taken care of. Instead, be grateful that they will be missing out on all the rubbish food that most teenagers eat in these, their most formative years.

If your teenager wants to be a vegetarian, you should encourage it, even though it will cost you more time particularly if you do not know much concerning vegetarianism yourself. It will be a steep learning curve for you and your children in the beginning.

One of the first things that a parent has to assess is to what degree does their child hope to go. Does he or she merely want to give up meat or also give up fish or go the whole hog (!) and give up milk, dairy and eggs as well. These three levels make vegetarianism progressively harder.

One of the foremost concerns about going vegetarian (especially for developing teenagers) is vitamin deficiency. Meat is concentrated vegetable food and is our prime source of vitamins such as calcium, vitamin B12 and iron.

You cannot do without these vitamins and several others besides, so if you give up meat, you will have to take them in tablet form until you find or adopt a means of re-introducing them into your diet in food form.

There will be many new foods for your teenager to taste in their task to replace meat and some of these alternatives may be unpalatable, depending on your child’s outlook on eating new foods.

Tofu is one. Some people love it and some people hate it, but it is a very handy alternative to meat. There are others, but it could be a long process of trial and error and your teen might just quit.

If your teenager wants to give up, it is almost certainly a good idea to make it easy for them to do so without them losing face or feeling that they have failed. It is difficult to undertake lifestyle alterations even at that relatively young age and who knows, perhaps they will return to (a level of) vegetarianism when they leave home and begin cooking for themselves.

Stopping Smoking Cigarettes

Smoking cigarettes used to be a great deal more popular than it is today. Now most smokers are looking for methods of stopping smoking. This is because smokers and the general public at large are more conscious of the dangers of smoking cigarettes these days.

Just look at films manufactured in the Sixties and before, everyone is smoking. It shows how common smoking was compared with today. This would not be possible now as you may not smoke in public places, on public transport, in restaurants or in bars any more in most Western countries and elsewhere too.

The problem with smoking is that not only the smoker suffers, so does everyone around about the smoker. This is known as passive smoking and it has an effect on those working or living with smokers – a barmaid or a spouse for example. So, all these individuals are endangering their health so that tobacco firms can become richer.

No matter how long someone has been smoking, it is possible to quit the habit. Anyone who has stopped smoking will tell you that stopping smoking cigarettes is all to do with the mind. You really have to desire to stop smoking or you will not do it successfully.

People have different ways of stopping smoking cigarettes. Some say that nicotine patches or nicotine gum help, because you can wean yourself off nicotine gradually without having to inhale the poisonous smoke of cigarettes. Nicotine is extremely addictive and most of the chemical withdrawal symptoms have to do with the shortage of nicotine in the body.

Most individuals find that the single effective way of stopping smoking cigarettes is to stop smoking dead – in one go. It is very hard to cut down or to switch to a weaker brand. You are still inhaling poisonous smoke. It is still no good to you or anyone about you.

Cutting down or switching brands is not effective, because you will still smoke other smokers’ and you will still be in a smokers’ environment. You will also find yourself smoking tomorrow’s five cigarettes today, swearing not to smoke any the next day. That never works. You have to stop smoking dead.

There are a number of situations that can provide the motivation to quit smoking cigarettes. Illness is usually high on the list. A few years ago two friends of mine who smoked heavily stopped smoking cigarettes within weeks of each other.

One was in his sixties and had smoked for almost sixty years: he was told that his lungs were starting to go, but that if he stopped smoking, the shock may kill him. He quit smoking one morning and survived, but what a dilemma!

The other was in his fifties and drove a great deal as a travelling salesman. The doctor told him that he would probably have to have a leg removed next year, if he did not give up smoking and that the other may go a year or so after that. He stopped smoking instantly and still has both legs.

So it seems that the trick to stopping smoking cigarettes successfully is to find your motivation (do you want to live long enough to see the grandchildren married?) and bear that image in front of you at all times. Take nicotine substitutes if you have to and stay away from environments where individuals smoke more, like pubs.Join a sports club instead, something like tennis, table tennis, swimming or even chess.

There Is More Than One Way To Repel Those Mosquitoes

As much as we love the warmer months of the year, there is one thing we do not look forward to: Mosquitoes. Oh yes, these insects are not friendly at all. They carry more than one sort of disease. Yes, these lightweight insects, which float in the air around us, pick up numerous illnesses from who knows where, will leave red, itchy marks on your body.

As Spring time and Summer time roll on, it is nice to have doors and windows open, but it is also necessary to have screens installed for a home’s doors and windows. These screens are particularly vital when it comes to opening up your home in the warmer months. Having these screens for doors and windows have been the best invention for holding mosquitoes outside.

When outside though, Mosquitoes will be zooming into you. Well, onto your skin more exactly. There are well over 300 scents that mosquitoes are attracted to and most of these scents are from human skin. For human beings to live, we need to breathe out carbon dioxide.

Well, this is one thing Mosquitoes are attracted to. Yes, as soon as anybody exhales carbon dioxide, Mosquitoes are more likely than not, to make a b-line for your body. When eating outdoors, mosquitoes are going to want not only you, but your food too.

They, like human beings, like salty foodstuffs. Foodstuffs rich in sodium are also filled with lactic acid. Another thing that draws mosquitoes to human skin is body heat and if drinking alcohol, that too attracts these pests.

All right, so now you are asking yourself what you can do to fend off these pests. There are various ways that you can use to repel them from your skin. If you are searching for something natural to repel any and all mosquitoes, try adding more garlic to your daily diet. For some reason, garlic lessens the attractiveness of human skin.

Now, you do not have to quite eat garlic, but instead take garlic supplements, along with B complex and vitamin B1 supplements. Changing your daily diet, by taking certain supplements, particularly in the hot summer months, will fend off these unwanted insects.

Now, if using natural products is not the path for you, there are lots of chemical products on the market. Let?s see, anyone who is not a fan of mosquitoes, can go to their local grocery store and look for such mosquito repellents as DEET, Oils and Electronic Repellents.

DEET is made from such ingredients I can not even pronounce, but is mainly sold in solid or liquid form and is highly poisonous. If this does not sound good to you, there are a range of oils which can be placed on your patio table or wherever you sit outside.

Some of the more widely used oils are botanically based like Citronella, Eucalyptus Oil and Soybean Oil. Naturally, anything botanically, is considered natural or organic and while used as suggested, will not injure the you.

Electronic mosquito repellents have been used for a some time now. In fact, they are used in the desert, such as the Middle East, by American Soldiers. These electronic devices are made with chemical pheromones to attract them and electrified wires to instantly electrocutes these horrible insects.

These days, there are also mosquito repellents which you can clip onto your clothing. This type of repellent permits the user to be free of mosquitoes for 120 hours and repels them from 15 feet away. This absolutely is one amazing, personal, repellent on the market today.

Vegetarianism – The Fundamentals

Vegetarians have always had the image of being on the fringe. In the Fifties, they were the Beatniks and in the following decades, they were the Hippies. Vegetarians have always been shown as individuals with long hair, wearing sandals and dressed in clothes made from natural products. Weirdos, some would say.

However, things have finally been altering over the last ten or twenty years. There are so many vegetarians nowadays that they can no longer be called on the fringe. Everybody knows a vegetarian these days and lots of individuals opt not to eat meat at each meal time.

The fact is that vegetarians come in numerous different degrees of vegetarian. There are those who will fairly happily sit at the same table as meat-eaters and there are those who will not. I once shared a house with two vegetarians.

While they went away on holiday for a fortnight, I decided to cook a chicken (something I was not allowed to do whilst they were there). When they came back ten days later, they knew that I had cooked a chicken and I had to promise never to do it again or move out.

Then there are vegetarians who will eat fish and there are those that will not and those who will eat dairy products and eggs, and those that will not. There are numerous levels of vegetarianism, the strictest being veganism, which means no animal protein whatsoever.

This can mean that vegetarians and vegans experience certain nutrient deficiencies that are concentrated in meat, fish, milk and cheese. However, it is usually just beginners who undergo these problems. Long term vegetarians know the dangers and either eat a very wide-ranging vegetarian diet or take vitamin tablets.

One effective means of replacing animal proteins is by eating beans, pulses, lentils and nuts. This is not an arduous challenge, but it does require more planning than slinging a hamburger on the griddle or barbecue. This is one of the issues for busy vegetarians – preparing food takes a great deal longer.

Tofu and other products derived from soya beans are a godsend for vegetarians, because it has all the protein one requires and is very versatile. It does not actually have any taste of its own, but it takes on flavours from whatever it is prepared with.

In general, it can be said that vegetarians have to eat more mass than carnivores, because meat is concentrated vegetables. So, vegetarians normally have to eat more and also eat more varied food yet also make sure that they consume all the nutrients that a body has to have.

The upshot of being a vegetarian though is that no animal suffers for you and you get lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, which do not contain a lot of calories. Vegetarians are not normally overweight and they seldom suffer from constipation and the illnesses that are linked with eating too much meat, including cholesterol and high blood pressure concerns.

Some Advice On Quitting Smoking

If you are a smoker, then the overwhelming odds are that you have tried to give up smoking, even if you never told anyone that you were trying to give up. The old joke among smokers is that they have given up giving up.

That is a real pity and a very sad joke. Most smokers started while they were young and impressionable, but it takes a lot of willpower to give up for life.

If you are attempting to give up smoking, then I hope that some of the suggestions set out below will be of use to you in your quest to kick the habit. The truth is that it takes most people years to certainly give up smoking, although there are lots of people who give up one day and never smoke again – ever.

It just depends on the sort of person you are really. Some people can cut down gradually and others know that if they are going to stop, then they have to make a clean break once and for all.

It is straightforward to judge progress with the person who stops from one day to the next, but a lot harder to do the same with someone who cuts down. For example, how long is someone going to take to cut down from one packet a day to two?

How does a partner know when someone is smoking ten cigarettes an evening, that they have not already smoked thirty during the day? It is very difficult.

In the end, the quitter is alone and if he or she wants to tell lies concerning their progress, they can. No-one else will know, but at the end of the day, they are merely telling lies and trying to fool themselves that they are trying to give up smoking. Having said that, a smoker should reward himself for each step of real progress.

A decent tip is not to rely on just one strategy to give up. For example, you could wear a patch and reduce your intake by five or ten real cigarettes each week. Try nicotine gum at the same time.

Always tell people that you are giving up and never take a cigarette off anyone and never give anyone one either. Do not get into ’rounds’ or ‘flashes’ of offering cigarettes.

If you find that you smoke more whilst you are in a stressful situation, such as at the time to submit the end of year accounts, hold off attempting to quit until after then. One of the times that most smokers have a big problem cutting down is while they are in the pub drinking alcohol with their friends. This is probably the hardest time to overcome the habit.

Numerous people like a cigarette with a drink after finishing work and if you fit into this category, attempt to go home from work for a drink or give up smoking with a friend and take it in turns to go to their house and yours for a drink after work. Once the first three months are up, you could go back to the pub and see how you get on or you simply might not want to anymore.

Termite Fumigation Issues

Have you just found out that you have a serious termite infestation? Have you just been told that you will need to use gas on them because it is the fastest means of termite control and you do not have any time to lose? If so, toxic gas probably is the only answer.

However no one would blame you for being a bit worried about having your house fumigated with toxic gas. It does not sound a very beneficial environment to have to live, eat and sleep in afterwards, does it? The good news is that there is little reason for anxiety, particularly if you use a reputable firm with a history of using gas on termites.

Vikane is one of the most commonly used gases for the fumigation of termites. It is usually used with a procedure called tenting. Tenting means quite literally erecting a tent over the whole structure concerned, say your house.

The tent is then sealed as much as possible, the Vikane gas is pumped in and fans are utilized to make certain that it is circulated throughout your house, including your attic and basement. The gas is left to do its deadly work for a day within the sealed up tent and within your house.

On the second day, the tent is removed and the house is ventilated making use of the fans again. Delicate instruments are used to measure the levels of gas in all rooms of your home and when the pest controller is convinced that the levels of gas have dropped to where your house is safe for human occupancy, you will be allowed to move back in. That will usually be on the third day.

Vikane does not leave a sticky deposit, so it will not leave a film on your furniture which you will have to clean off later. When the house has been thoroughly ventilated, all the gas will have disappeared, although there may still be a couple of innocuous pockets left behind rafters and joists in the attic and basement.

Tenting your house may give you grounds to think that the gas must be dangerous for surrounding wildlife or your neighbours, but this is not the reason for tenting. The tent is put up in order to retain the gas against the outside of the exterior walls of your house as well, so that it is treated from inside and out, although it does help prevent wasting gas also.

This tenting system of fumigation with Vikane is a very successful method of getting rid of an infestation of termites from a building. In fact, it is so efficient that your contractor should issue you with a guarantee, although you may have to have the procedure repeated every year or two in order to maintain the guarantee.

Vikane is aimed solely at termites, so it will not kill any other eco-system that has established itself within your house. It will not kill spiders, ants, bed bugs or cockroaches. More’s the pity, I can hear you saying.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on lots of subjects, but is at present concerned with pictures of termites. If you are interested in this or if you are wondering: What Does A Termite Look Like?. Please go to our web site now for further details.

Building A Backyard Fish Pond

A backyard fish pond will enhance the beauty of your garden, there is no question about that. A backyard fish pond will add a focal point to a messy garden and will make a beautiful backyard or garden even more interesting. There is something pleasant about the gurgling and splashing of fresh water.

However, in spite of the massive upside of having a backyard fish pond, there is also the question of maintenance. This is not an arduous task, but it is on-going and does need to be carried out on a methodical basis.

Everybody enjoys a backyard fish pond. If you already have one, you can bear witness to the fact that guests, friends and family like to spend time sitting around the edge of your pond watching the fish go about their lazy lifestyles and listening to the sound or running and splashing water. It seems to fascinate humans and it is therapeutic.

If you do not already own a pond, but want one, the first step is to choose where to locate it. A few suggestions here:

1] do not site it at a low point in the garden otherwise it might flood when it rains and your fish might swim away. 2] try not to put it under a tree or you will spend the rest of your life dredging foliage out of the water 3] do try to put your backyard fish pond where it will be at least in partial shade at midday

Once you have the prime site, you need to think about size and shape. The most popular formats are: round, square, oval and kidney shaped. The depth of the water is also significant if you live in an area that is subject to freezing. Thirty to forty-five inches is enough in most instances, but it would be worth asking neighbours or the local pet shop for advice.

Once your pond is in place, you can install your equipment. You will need a pump to suck the debris out of the water and send it to the pond filter. However, this pump will allow plant debris to pass through it, so if you want a fountain, you will almost certainly need another pump, otherwise the fountain’s jets will become blocked by dead vegetation.

If this all seems a bit much, you can buy a pond kit which contains all the bits and pieces you will require to set up a backyard fish pond. One tip here: if you get solar-powered equipment, it will save on electrician’s fees and you will never have an electricity bill for your backyard fish pond.

After installing the pumps, filter and fountain, you can fill the pond up with water and turn the equipment on. The water is inappropriate for fish at the moment, so just let the equipment run in and the water mature. This will require a week for the water. Meanwhile, choose your fish and plants and construct any hidey-holes you want to put in for your fish.

When the week is over, you can add your plants and populate your backyard fish pond with fish.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with koi pond kits. If you are interested in a Solar Powered Pond Pump, please go to our web site now for a special deal.

Why You Should Use Contemporary Fine Art In Your Hotel Decor

Businesses of all kinds have come to realize that contemporary fine art makes great, yet affordable decor and the lighting necessary to illuminate them is useful for lighting corridors too. Hospitals, hotels, airports, restaurants and bars are jumping on the band wagon as well.

There are all kinds of paintings and objets d’art, so many in fact that you will always be able to find something to fit in with whichever style of decor that you have. You can use contemporary fine art to give bare walls an interest and to keep people interested while they are waiting for something to happen.

For example, contemporary fine art displayed in a restaurant will prevent diners from becoming bored while they are waiting for their order. Contemporary fine art in a bar will give solitary travellers something to do while they are passing an hour or two in your establishment. Likewise for hospital patients, looking at contemporary fine art might help relieve anxiety and stress.

Hotels and Guest Houses.

When people come to check in, you want to offer a warm, yet stylish appearance to them. Many hotel guests travel alone and spend time sitting in the lobby to pass their evenings or weekends. An interesting display of contemporary fine art will keep them interested for hours.

Put your paintings or and objets d’art at regular intervals around the walls, but do not crowd a wall. You should pick a warm, yet neutral colour for the wall’s emulsion. Lighting is also very important. Up lighting, down lighting or back lighting are common methods of illuminating pieces of art work, but you can also use spotlights to highlight something out of the ordinary.

The lobby can also contain a few plants and a coffee table or two with an interesting wrought iron lamp on each. A matching lamp shade helps to generate a warm, co-ordinated effect.

You should also put some contemporary fine art in the guest rooms, because, once again, many travellers are alone and have to spend hours sitting in their rooms alone. If you are stuck for a theme, think about your location. Is it near the sea or is the town famous for something? Does it have a well-known historical association? Once you have your theme, you will surely find pieces of contemporary fine art to decorate it with.

Try to put yourself in the shoes of the average person who comes to stay or eat at your establishment. Is he there for business or pleasure? If it’s pleasure do families come or is it largely singles? Whatever the type of hotel, guest house, restaurant or pub, you will find a theme and the rest will follow because there is so much choice of contemporary fine art.

Consistency is a good thing when you are decorating a hotel or guest house. Try to keep everything ‘on topic’. The colours, the furnishings, the plants, the contemporary fine art – the lighting should be subtle and the whole decor must be in the same theme, if it is to be wildly successful.

Kitchen Design And Lighting Ideas

If you have just moved into a new, old house, one of the first things that you will probably want to do is refurbish or remodel the kitchen, especially if you like cooking or spending a lot of time in the kitchen. If you use a kitchen a great deal, you will probably already have a good idea of what you would like the kitchen to look like in the end.

One of the first decisions to make is whether you are going to do it yourself or oversee it yourself. There is a lot of work in a kitchen refurb and I have seen amateurs spend years, literally years, doing what a builder could have completed in weeks. This always leads to family tensions. Once that I know of, it even led to divorce. It seems that everybody wants to brag that they are having refurbishments done, but no one actually wants to go through the aggravation of having it actually done.

If you are not completely sure what you want your kitchen to look like, it is a good suggestion to visit show kitchens in home improvement stores and even pick up brochures there to study at home. You could also buy a few magazines and surf the Internet for suggestions.

Once you see a few examples that you like, be sure to cut out the pages and print off the image files after downloading them. This way you can build up a dossier of the things that you would like to integrate into your new kitchen..

Once you are pleased that you have all the components you like, you have to collate them. This does not have to be to scale or exact, but just as good as you can do with what you have. Take a large sheet of paper, say A3, and draw in your kitchen’s windows and doors.

Then cut out the pictures of the items you want from the magazines and brochures and stick them in place. If you think that this is not feasible, draw them in and label them unmistakably so that you can refer back to your picture file.

You need not stop at one drawing, you can play about with it. If you cut the pictures out, but do not stick them down, you can move them around until you are contented. You may also want to get the opinions of other members of the family and have a brain storming session

When you have finished, decide how you are going to illuminate the kitchen. Do you want a pendant light over the table? Do you want spots pointing at the cooker and the sink? Do you want concealed down-lighting to shine on the work surface? How are you going to see what you are doing? It is a very important question. Wall lights are good for ambient lighting.

In conclusion, you have to choose a colour scheme and you are almost ready to start, unless you are using a contractor and then you will have to select one first, but that will make up the contents of another article.

Great Country Decorating Ideas

For those who live in the country decorating ideas are not hard to come by. Personally speaking, I think that a lot of my inspiration comes from the world around me. When I say that, I don’t mean that I use the most obvious aspects of the country around me, only that if you look hard enough you’ll always find a subtle mixture of country decorating ideas that you will be able to take into your own home decor.

Doing your home up with country decorating ideas is great but if you don’t make it blend in naturally with your surroundings your house will just become an eyesore intruding upon the glories of nature. Surely, you have looked at a house in the country and thought to yourself: how beautiful and serene it was, and how much you’d really like to live there?

Haven’t you ever asked yourself why this was so? Without a doubt, it was for the house’s simplicity and elegance, along with the fact that it blended in so well with its environment. If you live in the country, you’re probably unaware of what I’m talking about and you are wondering why I mention it.

Maybe you’ve lived in the country most of your life and you just don’t understand what is so wonderful about the old country decorating ideas and houses that blend in with nature. After all, a country house is just like any other house that you’d find anywhere else. Or so you would imagine.

Well, in my opinion, you’d be wrong on that count! Country homes are a sight for sore eyes for those people who live in a concrete hell. So, if you’re fortunate enough to live in the country savour the it.

With a home in the country decorating ideas should be coming into your head nineteen to the dozen and with only a little planning on your part, you can make your normal country house into a comfortable country retreat.

The only negative aspect I’ve noticed with this so far is the number of inspiration I receive from my environment. That might not sound like a bad thing, but believe me, there’s nothing worse than having country decorating ideas pouring into your mind with almost no let-up and not being able to put them all into practice.

However, when this flow starts, I just lie back and let it consume me. I’ve always found that there is no use fighting against the inevitable, although a little dreaming never did hurt anyone. If the ideas I’ve had are really good and they grip my attention, I write detailed notes about what I’d like to do.

So, no matter whether you want to alter your home into a country residence, or whether you just want to redecorate the home you already have with country decorating ideas, the inspiration should be easy to come across and just as easy to put into practice. A country home is the right place to be to relax from your stressful workday day.

Remodeling Bathrooms

So, you have made up your mind to remodel your bathroom, you have some bathroom remodeling ideas and now and you are looking for that perfect bathroom design. You know the one you are looking for. It has to be just right for you and it has to last for years with grace. The colours must not clash, and you should be able to bear the sight of it day after day after you finish it for a long time to come.

The perfect bathroom design should incorporate every new bathroom gadget known to man and you should still have enough room to move around without hitting your head or your elbow on some protruding edge. Your perfect bathroom design should also pass the test of time, still looking as graceful as it did when you first remodelled it. Its not too much to ask really, only a mini miracle on the scale of turning water into wine.

All right, let’s be perfectly honest about it, they are the kind of bathroom remodeling ideas that everyone is looking for, but which no-one has yet found. Or at least not to their complete satisfaction. Therefore, there is really only one thing you can to do, and that is to cut corners here and there on your perfect bathroom design. It might become slightly less perfect but at least you will still have nearly all of your bathroom remodeling ideas from your original design.

Interior Design Ideas

Redecorating your house really isn’t that easy and it only becomes even less so when you are stumped for ideas. The only way to really get over this shortage of interior design ideas, is to sit down, put your feet up and have a cup of coffee.

I’m not kidding, there’s no better way of getting a new perspective on things than taking a break from what you are doing. In the first place, you become more relaxed, and in the second place a steaming cup of tea or coffee is always welcome.

Once that you’re resting comfortably and are suitably relaxed, close your eyes and picture the room that you want to redecorate. Even if you are redecorate more than one room, it’s always a good idea to start with one room first, working your way logically through to the next one and then the next one.

Before you begin your travel through the land of interior design ideas, get yourself a notebook and pencil so that you can jot down any good ideas you have before they are forgotten

So, just sit back and picture the room in your mind. Try and see it as you want it to look. And if that’s too hard, then first try to replace separate bits and pieces. This is always a good way to start. If you’ve still got a mental dearth of interior design ideas, then leaf through some interior design catalogues beforehand so that you have at least a working idea of what you can do to redecorate your room.

The interior design catalogues need not be anything more grand than your free local department store catalogue, turned to the home furnishing section. Then again, nowadays you also get specialist shops which deal solely with redecorating. If you have the time, a quick trip down to one of these might also help to end the lack of interior design ideas, and will possibly get you started again.

These stores will have decorated sets of several designs, giving you a good idea of what your room could look like if you buy those materials. However, if you’re going to one of those shops, expect to shell out some money as no matter how hard you try to keep a tight hand on your wallet, you’ll always find something you want to buy.

This is not necessarily a bad thing to do, but unless you watch out you could end up buying things you don’t need. And without a proper idea of what you want the room to look like, this can turn out disastrous. Not to worry though, if you keep your mental image in mind, you can go back home and get a start on redecorating your rooms the way you like.

Furthermore, now that you’ve managed to get at least some interior design ideas of what you want your rooms to look like, your whole redecorating project ought to be that much easier and that much more enjoyable.

Decorating Teen Rooms

Teen rooms are the bane of mothers everywhere. It’s not even like when they were younger. In those days, if their rooms were messy, you could shout at them and get them to clean it up, and, if that didn’t work, you could go in and do it. But when it comes to teens and their rooms you’re dealing with a whole different kettle of fish.

True, you could go and ask them to tidy up their rooms. And yes, you could shout at them a little if you wanted to, and go and clean the room yourself. However, that’s when all hell breaks loose. Teen rooms are sacred places and not to be entered into lightly.

Woe betide the person who dares to move even one inch of that mess on the carpet. It was there for a good reason and you had absolutely no right to move it. At least, that will be the argument of most teens, and you being the patient, caring mother that you are, will just roll your eyes and tell them that the whole pizza and day-old shirt thing just don’t go well together and you were just rescuing them from the anger of the walking pizza slice.

Your teens will in turn roll their eyes and scream, not to exaggerate, it wasn’t about to grow legs and walk off on its own, and if it was then wouldn’t that make a great science project. So, you keep cleaning and they keep putting things back. And so ends the story, and you’re right back at square one.

Naturally, one way you could deal with this catastrophe is to redecorate it. Teen rooms might be sanctities for them, but even they would like it if you gave their rooms a fantastic makeover.

That’s not to say that the room will be any cleaner once you’ve finished and they’ve moved back in, but at least you’ll get to see the inside of the room long enough to tide you over for the next couple of years. That is unless you’re thinking of redecorating their rooms every year.

But now you come to your next problem. Since teens are notoriously different when it comes to their rooms. You might find that your teen rooms are decorated quite differently from what you expected and what you would have done first of all. This is where a comprise should be struck, if your teen wants black for his room, then say you want another colour too that will offset the black.

Be prepared to compromise a little on your ideas no matter how silly their ideas are. After all, they’re only a teen once and they will look back with horror on what bad taste they had.

As a parent it is your duty to give them these moments in their lives which they can look back on with due horror, and ban their kids from doing the same to their own teen rooms.

Decorating Children’s Rooms

If you’re unhappy with the way your home looks, the best thing you can do is redecorate it. Not necessarily all at once of course, as this will lead to headache upon headache and is almost guaranteed to bring stress into your life when you really didn’t need it. However if you start one room at a time, your redecorating project will become that much easier and more manageable.

The next stage is to decide which room you want to decorated first. It’s not always an easy decision to make, but it must be done nevertheless. How about starting by decorating the kids’ rooms first as this will lead to a general mood of happiness in them and can even help you in the long term too.

Decorating kids rooms can be an enjoyable way to pass your time and also gives you the opportunity to bond with your kids as well. There’s no better way to get close to your kids than by getting down to their level and talking about the things that appeal to them. Decorating their rooms might be the perfect way to do that.

But where do you start? If you’ve more than one kid you need to be careful about whose room you’re going to decorate first, as things can get tense. Decorating kids rooms can be fraught with tension if you don’t handle it delicately, so I’ve found that the best way to deal with it is to toss a coin in the air and have the kids call out heads or tails.

This method might not work however if you’ve got more than two kids or more than two rooms to decorate. In which case I’d suggest you just wade in and begin the whole decorating process at once instead of tackling it room by room.

But at least you’re not doing the whole house and this way you promote happier feelings amongst the children with no-one feeling that they have been slighted by having their room decorated last. What tends to happen when you’re decorating the rooms with the kids’ help though is that more paint gets splashed everywhere but where it should be. But then that was part of the reason you opted to start decorating the kids rooms and perhaps even their play areas first, wasn’t it.

You’ll be much happier for at least starting on your decorating project and your kids will be happier for having their rooms redecorated too, not to mention the sheer pleasure you’ll be enjoying while you’re busy doing all this. Of course, This isn’t to say, that decorating kids rooms isn’t completely hassle or stress free.

On the contrary, you’ll probably get a shedload more stress by the time you’ve finished, but at least you’ll have had the satisfaction of getting closer to your children and seeing their rooms clean and tidy for at least one day before the kids move back into them again.

Kitchen Decorating

It’s a Saturday morning and you’re sitting there waiting for your coffee machine to stop its cycle, so you can have that vital early morning cup of coffee. Idly, you look around your kitchen and notice a spot of paint missing from the corner of the door. It had happened years ago but you never really took any notice of it before now.

You continue to allow your gaze to stray and your eye gets caught by a patch of mildew growing under the sink, then you notice the ugly brown colour your ceiling has turned just above where the cooker is.

The paint is slightly off colour, and the only papered wall is starting to look a bit old-fashioned and faded. You take a fortifying sip of your now-ready coffee and decide that a little bit of kitchen decorating is needed.

How do you go about it though? And how soon can you get into it? Now that you’ve finally noticed all the little bits and pieces of decay that you were quite successfully ignoring up until that moment, you can’t wait to get started on your little kitchen decorating project.

However, that is where the crunch comes. Just how small do you want to keep your kitchen decorating plans? Can you get away with just sloshing a fresh coat of paint on everything or will you need to go to the trouble of removing the wallpaper off the wall, and finding out what had caused that mildew stain.

Naturally enough, it all depends on you and your budget, but if you can spare the time, energy and money, you’ll probably do better, in the long run. to get rid of all your kitchen decorating problems at once. That would include stripping the wallpaper, replacing any carpeting or rugs that you might have, and perhaps even sanding down your wooden floors if you have those. If you’re going to do a complete job of kitchen decorating however then you’ll also need that all important final coat of fresh paint to brighten up your kitchen.

You may also want to consider replacing those tatty old curtains as they’re also probably looking distinctly old by now. So, go ahead and splash out on your kitchen decorating project and replace the curtains and while you’re about it, you should think of investing in a new set of tea towels as well. It won’t hurt to go all out while you can.

And when you’re finally done, you can sit back and enjoy your new kitchen and remember that weekend morning that started it all off. You’ll have no regrets whatsoever, since your kitchen decorating project has provided you with a better kitchen than you ever hoped for.

A feeling of contentment rushes through you as you bring your new coffee mug to your lips. Life just doesn’t get any better than when you’re enjoying the fruits of your efforts and labour.

Ideas For Interior Painting

Redecorating or renovating your house is never easy, and it gets especially harder and more tedious when you need to paint as well. Sloshing on one coat of paint after another can be draining if you’re going it alone and still have the whole house to consider.

And let’s not even start talking about the ceilings! But even if you do stick to the same old staid exterior paint job, it doesn’t need to be the same for the interior – you could always try some wild and wonderful interior painting ideas. If nothing else you’ll be guaranteed a reaction from all who enter your home.

By reducing the exterior painting plans to the necessary minimum, you can spend more time and creativity to the inside. You can let your imagination run wild with all those interior painting ideas you always wanted to implement but never got around to. And, as they say, there’s no time like the present, and be honest, when are you going to get round to redecorating your house again?

However, don’t be alarmed! When I’m talking about flamboyant interior painting ideas, I’m not saying that you should do something that resembles modern art paintings, no, I’m talking about something more along the lines of a paint job that reflects your personality.

So your interior painting ideas need not be anything bolder than a splash of vibrant colour on one wall, surrounded by soothing colours on the other walls. This works very well in any house and the vibrant colour that you pick out can be either soothing or primal, depending on what you want to reveal of yourself. You could, of course, always go to extremes and paint all the walls a bright vibrant shade or even mix and match different shades on different walls.

If you’re doing this, then you may want to think about the effect you’ll create and whether you can actually live with the colour scheme for very long. Crazy and inspired interior painting ideas are all very well and good, but you should always think about whether you’re going to be able to bear the sight of your newly panted walls or not after a month or so. If you are going to have to repaint everything again, it sort of defeats the purpose.

This doesn’t mean that you should restrict your creative urges or stifle your interior painting ideas. All it means is that some of your bolder ideas, should maybe be the subject of a small test-run somewhere else.

Don’t think of redecorating your home as something that you have to do. If you want to, you could always think of yourself as Michelangelo or Da Vinci or any of those great artists and paint a stunning mural. The only necessity is that you let your great interior painting ideas become reality and that you have loads of fun while you’re doing it.

Ideas for Wall Painting

So, here you are then, in your new house! Its a bit of a mess though because the previous owner was in a rush to sell and had been in the middle of redecorating. But, you don’t really mind that though, since it gives you the perfect opportunity to do your house up exactly the way you want it.

However, now you need to decide where everything goes and what colours will suit which rooms, but you don’t have any wall painting ideas.

So, you eagerly look through your new keys and wander through your new home. The minute you step in through a door ideas assail you. That huge vase you bought last year ago would look great in the corner, and you’re pretty sure that your existing sofa set will fit in this other room. And you know that an antique mirror table would look stunning in the hallway. The only thing you really get stuck on though are wall painting ideas.

You don’t want to just splash on a coat of neutral coloured paint and be done with it. What you want is a masterpiece, something that you can look on with pride every time you see it. Naturally, you should be able to keep looking at it with pleasure for some time to come as well, so it shouldn’t be too severe.

But where do you get good wall painting ideas from, and how can you go about getting the wall painting actually done? There are a few ways to go about this, the easiest of which being if you have an artistic flair, so that you could get your wall painting ideas out of your head, so to speak and paint the walls as you see fit. Unfortunately, most of us aren’t very artistic and we are loathe to pick up a brush or roller and apply the first coat of paint without supervision. In this scenario then, you will need some assistance.

You could begin by hiring a professional decorator to help you to decide which styles would look suit your home or you could sit down and watch some DIY TV programs, in which they show some pretty stylish ideas on what to do when re-decorating a house and will even give you some stylish wall painting ideas.

If neither of these options is viable for you though, you could just try going down to your local hardware shop with fabric swatches and colour sheets of your most prominent pieces of furniture and enlist their help on stylish wall decorating ideas.

You may come up with a hodge-podge of wall painting ideas with this last suggestion, but I found that it was the one that worked best for me and now I’m very proud of my ‘personalized’ house, because it reflects who I am just perfectly.
