Without a doubt, the greatest problem confronting the human race is the production of enough food for the population of the world. After all, food, including water, is the one thing that we can not do without. Everyone has to eat enough, although lots of individuals do eat too much each day. However, it is not just a question of putting something or enough in our mouths, the food has to supply enough energy and adequate nutrients.

Our bodies require the nutrients it takes to allow it to fight off attacks from disease, repair itself if it temporarily loses one of those battles and to only grow as we mature from childhood. We also need nutrients and energy to be able to move around, do our job and raise our children. Therefore, in order to get the most out of life, we all need to eat enough food of the correct quality.

However, having enough of the right sort of food is only part of the difficulty. You also have to know how to get the most out of that food by serving it properly and mixing it with appropriate foods. This normally involves cooking.

Therefore, the ability to cook is one of the most vital skills that a person can acquire otherwise many of the nutrients will be lost and so precious food will get wasted too. However, cooking does not just mean preparing the ingredients in the right manner so as not to squander nutrients, it also means providing the complete range of nutrients and fibres that we need over the period of, say, a week.

Cooking has conventionally been seen as a woman’s occupation in most parts of the world and this is understandable because women were often at home with children for a large part of their early lives, however, that has changed in numerous societies. Since the introduction of the birth control pill, numerous women have taken on a different, more equal function in society. Not just that, but more and more individuals are choosing to live alone and indeed individuals are also living longer.

This all points to a requirement for everybody to know how to cook. Each man an and woman ought to understand at least the rudiments of cookery so that they can take care of themselves or / and take an dynamic role in taking care of their family. This is not an easy job, if you prefer to get it correct. In many societies, children begin helping their parents and grandparents prepare food from an early age.

This is something that went out of fashion in many Western countries in the Seventies and Eighties. Luckily, this trend is reversing, however what is noticeable is that young Asian individuals living in the East are shunning learning to cook as ‘old fashioned’ as they are getting more prosperous. This is a real pity , yet we cannot expect Asian youth to learn from our mistakes.

The family cook has additional responsibilities other than merely those outlined above, the family cook also has to learn how to use the household budget wisely. In lots of families, the food budget is the largest proportion of the total household budget. That is a big responsibility. This only emphasizes the importance of cooking in the correct manner, acquiring the most nutrients possible from food and minimizing waste.

Unfortunately, not all foodstuffs are made equal which makes the job of the dedicated cook more difficult, because it means that the cook has to understand the dietary requirements of humans at all stages of life, which foods can fulfill those requirements and, for typical families, within a finite budget.

Therefore, it is useful to know the constituents of food – that is, how much water, which vitamins, how much protein, fat and carbohydrate everything holds. If you know these proportions in each foodstuff, you can match them to your family’s needs, and also choose the right method of serving the food, because some means of preparation destroy some of these properties and so ought to be shunned.

It is possible to cook very successfully for a family without knowing all these facts, yet knowing them either by having picked it up from an older relative or by study makes success more assured. Let us take a look at the five most common needs of all human beings, if not indeed all mammals.

Water is the largest component of human bodies and has to make up the largest proportion of our intake as well. We are continuously using up our water content in evaporation, repair, replenishment and cleaning. Fortunately, there is also a lot of water in a lot of items that we eat, eg fruit, meat and fish, yet we still have to drink water to keep our fluid levels up. Dehydration kills.

Next in importance is mineral matter – that is vitamins and nutrients. It is not a problem to get this mineral matter, because plants suck it up from the ground and so, if you eat enough plant life, you ought to eat enough minerals. By plant life, I mean fruit, vegetables and fungi. Carnivores can consume a concentrated mix of plant life by eating meat, however lots of people have given up meat for one reason or another.

Different plant life has a different allotment and concentration of mineral. In general, cooking does not destroy mineral content, but over cooking can result in the mineral leaching out into the water they are boiled in.

Humans require protein to grow and repair themselves so a lack of protein is the main problem for vegetarians. It is not an insuperable difficulty, yet it is a worry. Carnivores get their protein from meat, fish and dairy. The process of cooking protein makes it more easily digestible for humans; dogs and cats do not have this requirement.

A lot is talked about fat, yet fat is a necessary component of the human diet. A fat-free diet is not healthy for us, but the problem is that fat is easy to derive, especially from junk food. Carnivores get most of their fat from meat, yet fat is not difficult for vegetarians, because there is fat in almost every type of food, including nuts and grains.

Carbohydrates have also caused a lot of controversy (especially with the Atkins Diet), but carbohydrates are also a basic part of our diet. Again, it is not a problem to get all the carbohydrates that we need. Carbohydrates are most predominant in starches and sugars yet there is no doubt that we should monitor our consumption of carbohydrates in the same manner that we should with fats.

Every stage of cooking is vital: meal planning, meal preparation and presentation, yet before any of this can take place it is essential to pick the things that you are going to cook. The ability to pick high quality products is also very important. Food deteriorates after a particular length of time so knowing which signs to look for is the art to this specific aspect of cooking.

There are a number of considerations to product selection. For instance, the cook has to judge whether the produce is fresh, ripe or over ripe. Is the amount of waste associated with this produce acceptable? Will this product provide the necessary amount of nutrients? Do the intended consumers like it or will they like it? Does the price validate selecting this alternative?

Balancing all these considerations is really some feat that maybe a billion people carry out every day and perhaps a number of times a day. It is just remarkable. However, the best cooks or household managers need experience to do it correctly most of the time yet you can only get experience by ‘doing’ and doing involves making mistakes from time to time. There is nothing wrong with that – making mistakes is a standard part of the learning process.

There are in essence three elements to the successful selection of food. These are: 1] the substance of which it is composed; 2] its worth or potential to provide energy and or nutrients and vitamins and 3] how easily these qualities can be extracted in a digestible form.

It is only after you have answers to these three questions that you can know whether a product is worth the money. In other words, while you might always know the cost of an article of food, you may not always know its value.

It is clear from the above that the cook who takes his or her job seriously has a mammoth task on hand to know what human bodies need at the different stages of growth, illness and even just recovery from regular wear and tear; to know what articles of food can supply those needs; how to select foods that are at the peak of condition and how to prepare those foods so that you gain the most of that products potential.

Then there are the other considerations of whether you or your family will eat those products at all or whether they will only eat them if cooked according to particular recipes and finally, whether you can afford those foods.

As far as preparing children to eat or at least try different foodstuffs is concerned, it is important to get started as soon as possible. Children do not know what is healthy for them so allowing them to eat hamburgers and chips every day, because it is ‘all they will eat’ is nonsense. Children have to be trained to eat what is put in front of them until they are competent to make their own choices.

When you choose to be a vegetarian, it is a personal commitment yet only a personal commitment. No one will ever give you a rule book, a set of principles to sign up to or a set of guidelines to follow. It is completely up to you what you mean by being a ‘vegetarian’. There are no rules for being a vegetarian.

There are, however, different levels of vegetarianism yet some vegetarians may well debate yet even argue that their personal point of view is correct. The strictest kind of vegetarianism that you are probable to come across is the macrobiotic diet; then there are the vegans, who do not consume any animal products including fish, eggs and dairy products.

Then there is the majority of vegetarians who will consume fish, dairy and eggs but there are those who do not take fish, some who will drink milk and eat cheese but will not consume eggs and some who do. I even knew a vegetarian who allowed himself one bacon sandwich a month and turkey on Christmas Day (my father) and he considered himself a vegetarian.

You could assume a mild form or vegetarianism at first but then gradually give up fish and dairy products later as your craving for animal protein diminishes. Or you could jump in at the deep end by going vegan and add fish back in if you find it too hard. You can do whatever your conscience permits you to do.

Let us suppose that you take the gentle approach to vegetarianism for a year or two and then choose to stop eating dairy products and eggs. You have now become a lacto-vegetarian. It shows a sympathy for the animals in the dairy and egg industries. Numerous hens live in dreadful battery conditions. In general, cows fare somewhat better, but they still live an abnormal life.

Ovo-vegetarianism is the name give to the diet by which you can keep eating eggs after you have given up meat, fish but dairy products. Ovo-vegetarianism is handy if you find it difficult to become enough protein into your diet, because you can have an egg for breakfast but become vegetarian for the rest of the day.

Veganism is just about as strict as most people would like to go. Strict vegans do not eat any animal products including honey. Most people find that this is going too far and that it puts unnecessary stress on the vegetarian doing it. After all, a vegan has to know what is in everything he or she eats: each dish, loaf of bread, cake, biscuit and even slushie, in case someone has used honey as a sweetener or animal fat instead or margarine.

Most vegetarians would recommend the slow and steady approach to becoming a vegetarian, because it can get problematic at first and you do not want to put yourself off before you have even given it an opportunity to benefit you. Bear in mind that lifestyle alterations are always hard, so go easy on yourself and take your conversion into a vegetarian leisurely.

The stars always look so fabulous, do they not? Both sorts of stars do. Celebrities too. OK, we do not see them while they arise in the morning or with a bad hangover, but if we do see them, they always look at the peek of physical fitness and dressed in perfectly fitting clothes. It is their work not just to act and learn their lines but to look good too.

most if not all of them have personal fitness coaches, dietitians and even chefs in order to help them tackle the flab, so it is not really so difficult for them as it is for us, but the penalty for gaining weight is more severe, they might not be offered much more work, which would mean falling out of the limelight and that would be a serious matter for any celebrity.

Therefore, it is not astonishing that most stars have their own favourite tips for staying on top of the weight difficulty that faces most individuals each day of their lives. Here are seven celebrities’ tips on how they achieve it.

Jennifer Aniston: follows the 40:30:30 method of counting sorts of foodstuffs. That is:

40% of what she eats has to be slow-burning, low glycaemic foods like beans, root vegetables (like swede and potatoes), dark-green leaves (like cabbage) and fruit (such as bananas).

30% of what she consumes has to be lean-to-fatless protein such as skinless chicken, tofu, turkey, ostrich, veal, fish and low fat dairy produce.

30% of what she consumes should contain essential fatty acids such as oily fish, nuts, seeds and olive oil.

Kate Hudson; placed on 60 pounds in her pregnancy but was determined to lose it particularly after the media was so cruel to her concerning her size. She accomplished it in four months by concentrating on eating just high protein, but small meals often and training thoroughly. This sounds much like the Atkins diet, but it worked for her and now she looks better than ever.

Oprah Winfrey: uses a comparable plan to Kate Hudson’s. She works out at least five days a week and tries to consume mostly fish, nuts, fruit, beans, seeds, chicken and vegetables. She is especially cautious to avoid, but not totally cut out, white sugar and white flour and last but not least, she does not eat after 19:00 hours.

Gwyneth Paltrow: has a routine that is similar again. She as well avoids white sugar and flour, but follows a macrobiotic diet of vegetables, brown rice and very lean meat and fish. She does not eat any dairy produce at all and does yoga each day.

Madonna: also does yoga every day and follows a macrobiotic diet of organic vegetables, brown rice and fatless protein. She has given up junk food entirely.

Claudia Schiffer: will eat just fruit before noon and after noon she adds salad and steamed vegetables to her diet, She drinks lots of tomato juice and herbal tea and is especially fond of black grapes.

Christie Brinkley: is a strict vegetarian, who has also eradicated all types of junk food from her diet. She snacks on sweet potatoes and if she puts on a couple of pounds, she goes on a crash diet of fruit juices.

Do not forget that these celebrities have paid and almost certainly still are paying thousands of dollars for their advice, so if one of these outline diets appeals to you, do some more research and test it out free of charge. It works for them as you can plainly see.

In the West, not many individuals consume insects for pleasure, but that is fairly unusual if you consider the number of people and the number of nations in the world that do. In Asia, numerous people consume insects on a weekly or even daily basis. However, you may one day be happy that you read about eating insects, if you are stranded somewhere a long way from any other supply of food.

For instance, lots of army personnel are taught how to eat worms and insects as part of their routine training course as part of their survival training. Insects are abundant and are simple to catch or trap, they are also a richer source of protein than steak and easier to cook and far less risky to eat raw than meat from mammals, fish or birds.

Insects can provide more than three times the amount of protein weight for weight than any meat or fish. They are also free, you just have to know where to look or how to bait them. However, you ought to not consume just any insect that you can get your hands on. There a few easy basic guidelines.

Do not consume anything that can bite or sting you back. Not because this is perilous to you, but because creatures like bees, wasps and some ants simply do not taste pleasant because of the poisons they make for their stings. A notable exception to this rule is the scorpion. Many people find roast scorpion a delicacy.

You could hone this rule to merely include brightly coloured, stinging insects – especially ones with yellow colouring. Furry insects are not tasty either, particularly caterpillars. Flying insects in general, like flies, mosquitoes, blue bottles and the like, should be avoided as well.

Big beetles (with the exception of cockroaches), grass hoppers, locusts, crickets and scorpions are the best. So are worms, maggots and most other larvae of that type like bee, wasp and hornet larvae. Termites and non-stinging ants are also edible.

Most individuals fry the insects in oil after taking off the wings (like with flying termites or ants). However, if you are stuck in the wild, you might not have any oil with you. Luckily, that is not too much of a problem if you cook the insects fairly slowly, because most of them have enough of their own body fat to be fried in.

If you find that eating your first meal of insects is just too much to stomach, try mashing them in with some boiled root vegetables or wrap them in leaves. Boiled nettle leaves are very healthy and young dandelion leaves can be eaten raw.

If you are not sure how far to cook your insects, worms and larvae, here are a few pointers from Asia. Fry big beetles, termites and scorpions until they are hard on the outside but with a small, slightly soft centre. Fry worms, crickets, grass hoppers and the like until they are hard and crisp and boil grubs and bee, wasp and hornet larvae for merely a couple of seconds.

The majority of Westerners that visit Thailand turn their noses up at eating insects, but after six years of living here, I have never heard any of those who tasted them say that they were awful. In fact, most said that they were surprisingly tasty, but then why else would so many individuals like them?

A lot of people think that they simply would not have the time to be vegetarians. This is because if you cut the meat out of a regular diet, you will become malnourished. You need to replace the nutrients and vitamins available in meat with the same or equivalent nutrients and vitamins in other foodstuffs like lentils, beans, pulses, nuts and legumes.

This means that vegetarians need to plan their meals more precisely that meat-eaters, but it does not have to be an obsession. There are fairly simple ways of acquiring all your mind and body requires.

It is probably true to say that it is harder to plan meals properly whilst you first become a vegetarian, but you will soon get the hang of preparing meals that are nutritious and healthy. However, that gets harder and harder, the more foodstuffs that you exclude from your diet.

Some vegetarians will eat fish but some will not; some vegetarians will eat eggs and dairy products, and others will not. The more dedicated the vegetarian the more a problem it is to replenish the vitamins that you are lacking by not consuming meat.

One manner of looking at how much of a problem it is to become a vegetarian is by remembering that meat needs to be cooked but fruit and vegetables do not (or not all of them anyway).

Sandwiches are also a very fast vegetarian snack and you should take full advantage of all the different kinds of bread on the market to vary the flavours and the benefits from the ingredients.

Every cook should understand how to create a casserole and this is also true of vegetarian cooks. Maybe the best manner of cooking a casserole is in a crock pot, so if you have not got one yet, buy one as soon as you can. After using your crock pot for a week, you will be asking yourself how you ever found the time to live without one before.

You can prepare invaluable vegetarian casseroles for your family when you are at work or doing something else and there are thousands of vegetarian crock pot recipes without having to resort to using a meat recipe but just leaving out the meat.

The attraction of a crock pot is that you can prepare all sorts of food in it, not only casseroles. You can create puddings, breads and cakes, but that can become the topic of future articles. The other godsend to the busy cook is the microwave. You can microwave potatoes and other vegetables in minutes instead of roasting them for hours with the meat.

So next time you or someone else says that you do not have time to become a vegetarian, bear in mind that technology has moved on from the Seventies and it is a lot easier nowadays. There is a lot more known about vegetarianism now and that knowledge is much more broadly available – particularly over the Web and there are also better cooking devices like programmable crock pots and microwaves.

Cooking inside in the summer is such as a nuisance, is it not? You would like to be outdoors in the fresh air instead of sweating at a hot cooker but anyway, you are not even sure that the family or even yourself will want to eat hot food once it has been prepared. This is difficult that lots of household cooks face in the summer, especially if there is a young family involved.

Young Johnny will not touch ‘rabbit food’ – he wants meat and little Jenny does not want sandwiches again, because she had them for lunch. So, what can you do?

The crockpot can come to the rescue quite perfectly. Because it cooks over a long time without much heat, so the kitchen will not warm up much. You can put a casserole or a stew in there in the morning before going to work and let it cook all day and then, when you are back, you can simply knock up a salad for those who do not want a heavy meal.

It covers all the bases without costing any extra time on your behalf. Not just that, but if no one fancies what is in the crockpot, nothing is lost because it can be warmed up again the following day.

Using a crockpot to cook in this fashion will also save a great deal on electricity. Why? Not only for the cooking of the food in the crockpot, but also because if you cooked a traditional meal in the summer heat, you would need to switch on the air conditioning and the extractor fan.

This means that utilizing the crockpot to help supply an alternative or even the main meal during the summer is a win-win situation whichever way you look at it and it is cheaper as well.

That takes care of the main meal, but if there is more agreement in your family and you know from the start that everyone will eat a salad, you could use the crockpot to prepare a sweet. Or you could purchase a second crockpot.

Regrettably, crockpot cooking has acquired the reputation of just being good for preparing stews, but the fact is that this is very far from the truth. You can use it for roasting a joint or baking a cheesecake with loads of choices in between.

Two more benefits of cooking with a crockpot are:

Firstly, if you cook in a hurry, there is a predisposition to use rice or pasta as a filler instead of vegetables, whereas if you can prepare the vegetables a while before hand it is simpler to include them

Secondly, there is just one pan to clean after eating instead of two or three or more. This saves more time and energy as well.

You almost certainly have never been shown how to use your crockpot for cooking anything more difficult than a stew, so perhaps the first thing to do is buy yourself a decent crockpot recipe book which teaches a wide variety of meals including sweets and breads.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with researching the 2 quart crock pot.
We, as human beings, as very reliant on water. We are roughly 70% water and we cannot live without it. In fact, we can go weeks without food, but only about three days without water.

We, as human beings, as very reliant on water. We are roughly 70% water and we cannot live without it. In fact, we can go weeks without food, but only about three days without water.

One of the sad things about the Western diet is that a great deal of people no longer drink water. They have completely replaced water with sugary soft drinks, which of course contain enough water but also contain too much sugar or sugar substitute.

The first step that these people have to take in order to get back on track is to give up this silly, childish habit and begin drinking plain water again. It has been estimated that around two-thirds of people do not drink enough water, which means that they are in a permanent state of partial dehydration.

Water has a number of important functions in our bodies, but one of the most important ones is to flush out toxins. It is worth realizing that if you feel thirsty, your body has arrived at a state where it is crying out for water. In other words, it has already passed the state where it requires water, so endeavour not to wait until you are thirsty before you take a drink.

Another fact is that tea, coffee and alcohol (some of our most popular adult drinks) are diuretics, which means that they force urination, often more than they replace. So you can put 250mm in but you may lose 270mm. This is naturally not the purpose of drinking if you are thirsty

Exercise is another reason why we lose water. In fact, merely by being alive, we lose water due to body heat and evaporation, but while we are actually doing something, we lose water quite rapidly. You might get worried about drinking water before going to bed, but if you can do it, it is a very good thing.

If you wake up a bit groggy every day and need breakfast, tea or coffee before you can actually wake up, it might be because of dehydration, not because you have issues waking up. Being dehydrated results in drowsiness and lack of concentration.

In fact, dehydration is a major killer in the Third World. This is not because there is no water, but because the water is contaminated. This contaminated water causes diarrhoea which causes dehydration. It is vital to keep drinking when you are sick even if you do not feel like eating.

It is recommended that we drink at least eight tumblers of water (say, of 250mm each) a day. More if you are exercising or sick. It sounds like a great deal of water, but most individuals are awake for about 16 hours a day, so eight glasses works out to merely one each two hours.

It is more of a difficulty to get into the habit of drinking water on a regular basis than it is to really do the drinking, but once you have established the habit, you will feel better on a day-to-day basis. It will not prevent you from getting sick, but your general degree of health will improve, because you are getting rid of toxins.

If you are reading this article, the chances are that you are at least fifteen years of age, so if you were to make a decision to become a vegetarian at this moment, you would have at least fifteen yeas of eating meat behind you and it is difficult to change the habits of a lifetime.

Lifestyle alterations are the most difficult to achieve, so it is easier to maintain a vegetarian lifestyle, if you have never consumed meat at all. Therefore, the baby of a vegetarian mother has the best chance of maintaining a vegetarian life.

It is a matter of conscience whether a vegan mother would feed her baby on breast milk. There is no reason why she should not do so. Her body is producing milk for her baby, yet she might not want to give her baby ‘animal fat products’. It is a bizarre decision to have to take.

After the baby has been weaned, the options are easier again. You can make fantastic baby food recipes with fresh fruit and vegetables and a blender. Soya is another vegetable product that is useful for your baby’s vegetarian diet because it is one of the few vegetable sources of protein.

Soya is also very adaptable, although not always recommended for very young babies. You can eat or drink soya and you can bake, boil or fry it. It is pretty bland on its own, so it takes on the flavours of whatever you cook it with, so it can be used to push up the protein content of practically anything.

If you are intent on raising your child as a vegetarian or even a vegan, you have to be very wary after weaning, not to replace your own milk with cow’s milk. However, this is where you will have to take guidance from your doctor or midwife.

Do not let philosophy and principles stand in the way of your baby’s health. If your doctor chooses that your baby actually needs the things that are to be had in cow’s milk, then so be it, unless you seek out a vegetarian doctor for a second opinion.

At about six months of age, babies can start eating cereals. Rice is one of the easiest to digest. You can make a very thin rice meal by boiling the rice in water until it practically disappears, leaving that characteristic white water. Millions of Asian babies grow up on rice water each year.

As a vegetarian of some experience, you will have a decent concept about which combinations of food fulfill dietary needs, so you will be able to use this information to make sure that your baby does not go short of anything, and pay particular attention to any deficiencies that the doctor notices.

Obviously, you have to tell your doctor from the beginning that you are a vegetarian and that you want your baby to be brought up in the same way, because that could well have an impact on the vitamins or supplements that the doctor gives your baby.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on numerous subjects, and is now concerned with low fat low cholesterol diets.

Radio frequency identification or RFID is an old concept that has quietly become a large part of everyone’s life. RFID has been around for at least 90 years and was initially put into practice about 70 years, but not many people realized it. These days, you yourself are most likely scanned every day by an RFID reader and the things you purchase are certainly scanned at least once a week.

So what is RFID? Well, you can think of it as the update of the bar code although in fact, it is older than the bar code by 50 or 60 years. Bar codes were developed in order to integrate stock control with point of sales processing.

Everyone has witnessed this and is used to it: the sales clerk at the cash register takes the goods from your trolley one at a time, looks for the bar code, flashes a light or a bar code reader over it and the cost of the item is added to your receipt.

What you do not see is that the computerized stock records for that item are lowered by one and the sales price is noted along side it. That procedure worked well for 40 years, but now there is a need for more information to be recorded than a bar code can accommodate and there is requirement for more stock control and even more speed at the check out. Nobody has any time any longer.

Enter RFID, an old technology revamped. RFID is the expertise that they used to put in Second World War aircraft in order to distinguish friendly aircraft to the RADAR-controlled anti-aircraft guns. The same equipment, fundamentally, that they still use in aircraft today to identify it to air traffic control. The difference is that until pretty recently, these radio signal emitters or transponders were as big as a suitcase and cost a great deal of money.

These days they are the size of the tiniest coin in your change and cost about five cents. They win over the bar code because they can hold masses of data, such as where and when and by whom an item was made; how much it cost and how much it should be sold for; its colour, weight and description; which shelf and in which shop it should be kept on …. ad infinitum. The shop owner can write anything on that chip using an RFID printer.

And when it comes to the cash register… No more scanning each separate item by hand, because each RFID chip or tag, as they are called in the industry, sends out its own data on its own exclusive radio frequency, so so long as the RFID scanner is within three or four feet of the trolley, it knows what is in there instantaneously. No more unloading, scanning and reloading the basket.

In fact, no more check out clerk. Most shoppers pay with a credit or debit card these days anyway, so as you walk past the scanner with your trolley, you are scanned; you swipe your credit card through another scanner; if you are satisfied with it, you authorize the payment and the barrier lifts for you to carry on to your car. You only need a check out clerk for the people who want to pay with cash. Cheques are being abolished soon anyway.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on several topics, but is now concerned with the RFID asset tracking.

Teenagers are very impressionable and tend to become more left-wing than their parents, because they are under the influence of their teachers, who tend to be more left-wing as well. This tends to make teenagers more in touch with environmental issues and other world problems. This can send teenagers off in many directions, and one of the most well-liked, especially among teenage girls, is vegetarianism.

This phase frequently passes for one reason or another. Sometimes the parents cannot be bothered to cater to their new diet and sometimes the teenager simply misses bacon sandwiches as well much to keep up the diet. However, many do stick to their principles or come back to them later on in life.

Their children going vegetarian is often a cause for anxiety for parents, but it should not be. If your teenagers take up vegetarianism you will probably be concerned that they get enough protein, but that can be taken care of. Instead, be grateful that they will be missing out on all the rubbish food that most teenagers eat in these, their most formative years.

If your teenager wants to be a vegetarian, you should encourage it, even though it will cost you more time particularly if you do not know much concerning vegetarianism yourself. It will be a steep learning curve for you and your children in the beginning.

One of the first things that a parent has to assess is to what degree does their child hope to go. Does he or she merely want to give up meat or also give up fish or go the whole hog (!) and give up milk, dairy and eggs as well. These three levels make vegetarianism progressively harder.

One of the foremost concerns about going vegetarian (especially for developing teenagers) is vitamin deficiency. Meat is concentrated vegetable food and is our prime source of vitamins such as calcium, vitamin B12 and iron.

You cannot do without these vitamins and several others besides, so if you give up meat, you will have to take them in tablet form until you find or adopt a means of re-introducing them into your diet in food form.

There will be many new foods for your teenager to taste in their task to replace meat and some of these alternatives may be unpalatable, depending on your child’s outlook on eating new foods.

Tofu is one. Some people love it and some people hate it, but it is a very handy alternative to meat. There are others, but it could be a long process of trial and error and your teen might just quit.

If your teenager wants to give up, it is almost certainly a good idea to make it easy for them to do so without them losing face or feeling that they have failed. It is difficult to undertake lifestyle alterations even at that relatively young age and who knows, perhaps they will return to (a level of) vegetarianism when they leave home and begin cooking for themselves.

Vegetarians have always had the image of being on the fringe. In the Fifties, they were the Beatniks and in the following decades, they were the Hippies. Vegetarians have always been shown as individuals with long hair, wearing sandals and dressed in clothes made from natural products. Weirdos, some would say.

However, things have finally been altering over the last ten or twenty years. There are so many vegetarians nowadays that they can no longer be called on the fringe. Everybody knows a vegetarian these days and lots of individuals opt not to eat meat at each meal time.

The fact is that vegetarians come in numerous different degrees of vegetarian. There are those who will fairly happily sit at the same table as meat-eaters and there are those who will not. I once shared a house with two vegetarians.

While they went away on holiday for a fortnight, I decided to cook a chicken (something I was not allowed to do whilst they were there). When they came back ten days later, they knew that I had cooked a chicken and I had to promise never to do it again or move out.

Then there are vegetarians who will eat fish and there are those that will not and those who will eat dairy products and eggs, and those that will not. There are numerous levels of vegetarianism, the strictest being veganism, which means no animal protein whatsoever.

This can mean that vegetarians and vegans experience certain nutrient deficiencies that are concentrated in meat, fish, milk and cheese. However, it is usually just beginners who undergo these problems. Long term vegetarians know the dangers and either eat a very wide-ranging vegetarian diet or take vitamin tablets.

One effective means of replacing animal proteins is by eating beans, pulses, lentils and nuts. This is not an arduous challenge, but it does require more planning than slinging a hamburger on the griddle or barbecue. This is one of the issues for busy vegetarians – preparing food takes a great deal longer.

Tofu and other products derived from soya beans are a godsend for vegetarians, because it has all the protein one requires and is very versatile. It does not actually have any taste of its own, but it takes on flavours from whatever it is prepared with.

In general, it can be said that vegetarians have to eat more mass than carnivores, because meat is concentrated vegetables. So, vegetarians normally have to eat more and also eat more varied food yet also make sure that they consume all the nutrients that a body has to have.

The upshot of being a vegetarian though is that no animal suffers for you and you get lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, which do not contain a lot of calories. Vegetarians are not normally overweight and they seldom suffer from constipation and the illnesses that are linked with eating too much meat, including cholesterol and high blood pressure concerns.

RFID (radio frequency identification) chips or tags as they are better known are the size of the smallest coin in your pocket, but they can store huge amounts of data that can be manipulated in ways that can do fantastic things.

For example, RFID tags are in most office identity tags and in a few passports, allowing the holder to pass through security quickly while keeping the building or the country safe.

They are a modern version of the bar code. Remember before bar codes and bar code readers? When a shop keeper had to type prices into the cash register, correct mistakes and look up prices that they could not remember? People do not have any time for that anymore.

It is all right at the newsagents, but picture a teenager typing in your two trolleys of weekly shopping at the supermarket every Saturday. You would still be there on Sunday! Supermarkets have thousands of items and dozens of special offers – no-one could remember that amount.

No-one can, but bar codes make it straightforward and so do RFID tags. Bar codes work well, but they have to be seen to be read. RFID tags send out their information on a unique frequency which can be read out of line of sight. In other words, an RFID scanner does not need to see the tag to read it.

The scanner can read what is in your trolley without you having to unload it and as you pass by that scanner and pay for your things, they are subtracted from stock immediately so that the store manger can see what people are buying and what nobody wants to buy. So, if one brand of cat food sells better than another, the manager will see that on the computer print-out and buy more of that make, thereby keeping more people happy.

This use of RFID in stock control or asset management to give it its more official title, can translate itself into other uses too. An RFID tag can be put under your cat’s fur or in its collar so that you can locate him if he gets lost. The police and the wardens scan stray animals for a tag as part of their routine these days. Consevationists have been doing this with wild elephants, big cats and other endangered animals for years. Now you can have it done with your pets as well.

Company vehicles, as assets of the business, often carry RFID tags and you can have one placed in your car to aid recovery if it is stolen. Baggage handlers at airports or bus terminals can (and do) use them to avoid lost luggage.

The US government insists that RFID tags be used on all vehicles carrying explosives or hazardous substances and have done for almost ten years. The US military is in fact the principal user of these tags in the world. RFID tags are used to track military assets such as weapons, battle tanks, fuel, containers, guns, you name it.

Some people worry about RFID technology. Where is the line between their convenience and their personal information? For example, they do not like getting junk emails from people that have been able to trace the purchases they made with their credit cards.

Pharmaceutical firms have spent billions on researching this very lucrative issue because the market is so large now. It seems that everyone wants to look like a film star and that means having a great body. Anabolic steroids, growth hormones and insulin are at the forefront in the battle to bulk up the body with mostly muscle and the minimum of fat.

Beginners normally wonder how much weight they can gain and how long it will take. These are not simple questions to reply to because it depends on your genetic make-up. Androgenous types and those with high amounts of testosterone will make rapid gains. However, all body kinds will see rapid progress in the start, because your body will react to the elevated levels| of food and specific, targeted exercise.

However, everybody agrees that the gains become less obvious each year. In the beginning you will make rapid progress, but as you carry on, you will get the impression that you are trying to roll a rock uphill. This sorts out those who are serious and those who just want to show off and is the reason why so many fall by the wayside after two or three years.

The kinds of foodstuffs that you ought to be eating to bulk up are: orange juice; oatmeal (as in porridge); milk; eggs; wholewheat; granary bread toast with butter; beef; baked potatoes; salad with olive oil and lemon or vinegar dressing; fresh fruit; cottage cheese; chicken; tuna and other oily fish; broccoli and other greens; brown rice. You may add protein powder to these foodstuffs.

The basic rule is that you must eat more calories than you use up (otherwise you will lose weight) and these calories must come from very good quality food like the examples given above. However, because you have to exercise to make muscle and burn fat, you really do have to eat a lot.

This is not to say that consuming colossal amounts of these foodstuffs will not help you make muscle without exercise, but it is not a recommended method, partly because you have to exercise your heart so that it is strong enough to deal with pumping blood around this extra weight.

How to bulk up for bodybuilding and weight lifting is a colossal subject. It is not as simple as it used to be, although the results reachable these days by following modern dieting techniques are fantastic. The results are also safer. If you are going to try bodybuilding, it is best not to go it alone.

The least you should do is join a gym that has a decent reputation and discuss your dreams concerning bodybuilding with them. They will have met people like you before and they will be able to recommend books, booklets, videos and a dietitian all of which you ought to read, watch or talk to before you commit yourself to this regimen and keep in mind: it is not necessarily the best that get to the top, it is normally the most dedicated, the most hard- working and the most hungry for success.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a number of subjects, and is now concerned with pure omega 3. If you want to know more, please go to our web site at Omega 6 9

In order to illustrate how RFID tags can greatly sway the fortunes of a company for the better, we can take a look at a theoretical case below. Let us take the example of a furniture maker specializing in the supply furniture to a hotel chain.

This may sound like an example with no relevance to typical small businesses, but in fact, hotel chains are awfully choosy and have no loyalty, so if you can satisfy these people, you can please anyone.

The main requirements of the hotel chain are that orders are met and on time, the quality of the supplier’s products has already been considered to be sufficient by means of enforced ISO 9000 quality control and factory visits.

The hotel furniture manufacturer decides to use passive RFID tags to track its items from the point of manufacture to the point of delivery, that is the hotel or its depot.

Under previous conditions the manufacturer had employed a couple of personnel to walk around with bar code readers and clip boards carrying out quality control and tracking the completion of orders.

The problem was that the system was still subject to human error and items still went missing, which lead to management compensating by over manufacturing and over stocking ‘just in case’.

That is a common enough phenomenon., but the difficulties are multiplied when you think of all the separate items of furniture that are implicated in a hotel room, bathroom or lobby and if they are stored in a 200,000 square foot warehouse. Items get lost, forklift drivers make errors, people forget to fill in inventory forms, get sick and take holidays.

In short, administrating a storehouse like this is a nightmare with too much pressure on important employees. It sometimes leads to incomplete deliveries or worse, imperfect delivery tickets. Sometimes the order might be complete but the hotel would think it was not because the delivery ticket was incorrect.

If this firm were to initiate RFID asset control they could affix an RFID tag to completed sticks of furniture. The tag would say where it is, what it is, whom it is for, when it has to be delivered and what else forms part of the order. The tag is being read constantly by the warehouse’s RFID readers warning when orders are running late or are still incomplete.

Not only that but the tag can say what else has to be made and whether the object itself has passed quality control. It can also say which defects someone has found with it. In short, instead of a couple of people traipsing around the stockroom hoping that they have covered everything, you could have radio sensors reading every tag in a warehouse the size of a soccer pitch, reporting back to a central computer where the storehouse manager can have access to real time intelligence, not just the state of affairs at close of business the day before.

This should enhance the manager’s opportunity to manage, cut down on waste, guarantee complete orders handed over on time and so superior levels of customer satisfaction, which should lead to more repeat orders.

All RFID tags are used to store and ultimately send data. They can best be thought of as the replacement for the bar code. However, they have significant advantages over bar codes. For instance: RFID tags can hold much more data than bar codes; they can be scanned from further away and they can in point of fact send data, not only store data.

There are three varieties of RFID tags: passive, active and hybrid. Passive RFID tags are the least expensive, because they are less complex. They need to be induced to disclose their data by taking power from an RFID reader. When the reader’s radio waves hit them, they reflect back their data. This is the kind of tag used in goods in a retail outlet or on crates in a warehouse.

On the other hand, active RFID tags have a battery, a transmitter and an aerial so that they are always transmitting. These units are clearly a lot more expensive and so are used only on more expensive items like a container, a battle tank, an aircraft, on criminals ankle bands or on an animal of an endangered species.

The hybrid RFID tag is capable of transmitting, but it has to be told to transmit; it has to be turned on by a signal. This signal could be a satellite flying over head. These hybrid RFID tags are also costly, but the battery lasts longer because they are not ‘always on’. These tags have the same uses as the active tags, but are suitable for use where it is not vital to know where something is every minute of the day: for instance cows in a field or goats on a mountain.

Passive tags can be attached permanently by sewing them into linings or putting them under skin because they do not have their own power source and do not wear out. This is a cause of anxiety to some people who worry about an invasion of their privacy or the erosion of their human rights.

Active and hybrid tags are most frequently plainly visible so that the batteries can be changed as and when required. If this is going to be unlikely to take place, as in the case of wild animals, the tag can have a biodegradable clasp which will break sometime after the probable expiry of the battery.

Some uses for RFID tags are on season tickets so that the holder can pass through the style more quickly than a customer paying by cash. It has uses in security; most of the ID badges you see pinned to jackets have RFID built into them so that security guards do not have to stop and question everybody.

They can be put into wagons that repeatedly cross frontiers so that they do not have to stop for identification. They can be put on windscreens so that, as you pass through a motorway toll post, either your credit card is billed or the charge is added to your company’s monthly statement.

Hospitals utilize them on patients so that they do not lose anyone or misidentify them. RFID tags are helpful in our daily lives but people are concerned about criminals being able to read all this information too readily as well.

RFID is the acknowledged acronym for Radio Frequency IDentification. The core of RFID technology is that every RFID chip or tag is capable of emitting a radio signal on a frequency totally unique to itself.

RFID is the acknowledged acronym for Radio Frequency IDentification. The core of RFID technology is that every RFID chip or tag is capable of emitting a radio signal on a frequency totally unique to itself.

Therefore, every RFID tag must have its own identifying frequency and the RFID tag readers have be sensitive enough to be able to differentiate between frequencies that are only a very tiny bit different from its neighbouring tags. The disparity can be microscopic.

Therefore, the technology has to be sensitive and selective, but not fragile, because the apparatus has to be used on the shop floor and by people who are often in a hurry and in weather that may be inclement.

In order for RFID to work, you need a tag, which is an upmarket kind of bar code and a radio receiver, often called a (tag) reader. However, whereas a bar code can only hold a small amount of information and the bar code reader has to be pointed at it, an RFID tag can store much more information and can be read from a hundred yards or more – even out of line of sight.

Passive tags will only reveal their details when asked to by a reader, whereas an active tag is constantly relaying its contents. Clearly, active RFID tags are more costly than passive tags, because they require a long life battery.

These tags can be utilized to track items from the moment they leave the manufacturer of the goods they describe to the in-bay of the vendor. The tags can then be up-dated or replaced and stored in the warehouse. Once there, RFID readers can keep management informed about what goods are where and if the sell-by-date is impending.

This has ramifications for the amount of stock that a company needs to hold, the quantity of items sold cheap because the sell-by-date is very near and for theft, all of which should increase company profits more than paying for the cost of the tags, the readers, the printers and the software.

At the click of a mouse, bosses will be able to read how much inventory they have in real time and if this is all connected to the checkout cash registers, which are the most and least profitable items. This makes reordering easy . Easy to the point of computerization. For example, when supplies of the top ten percent of the best selling items falls below 1,000 order 10,000 more. Automatically, no questions asked.

RFID has many other uses as well. The ideas outlined above can be applied to farm animals, a call centre’s computers, a fleet of commercial vehicles, an inventory of domestic items, your pets, your car and even your garden furniture. Some individuals who work over a boundary are even having them placed under their skin so that they do not have to wait at customs.

And bear in mind that criminals on early discharge are also tagged. It is the same technology.

How does one go about taking care of one’s property – one’s worldly possessions? Well, the majority of people put their money in the bank, put the jewellery in a safe and insure the rest. But insurance is not really taking care of your possessions, is it? It is taking care of yourself so that you do not have renew them with your own money.

In the old days, and even now, I presume in some places, you would employ a boy to watch over your sheep or cattle or bring them in at night for fear of big cats, wolves or rustlers. These were an early kind of security guard and indeed rich people had and frequently still do have personal body guards.

What if you had a substantial office with a hundred laptop computers – laptops because people had to do field work too? How would you keep track on all those? A car is another good case in point and construction site machinery is being stolen all the time even from under the watchful gaze of (or with the compliance of) private security companies.

So what can you do? Get dogs? That works usually, but they can be poisoned. Install video cameras and passive infra-red movement sensors connected to a control centre? That works and a lot of firms and private houses have it, but it is very expensive.

As a cheap alternative, the police were handing out free pens in the UK, which wrote in invisible ink. The idea was to put your postcode and house number. This ink became visible under a certain kind of light. That is all very well if you have a suspect or found goods.

Bar codes are not realistic, the pen is better. It all comes back to insurance or surveillance.

However, there is another way that is becoming affordable. The concept has been around for approximately 85 years, but it was too pricey to use on anything less significant than an airplane or a battle tank.

I am talking about radio frequency identification or RFID for short. The concept is the same one that aircraft have been using since during the Second World War – a transponder sends out precoded information in answer to a demand from an RF reader.

Details regarding ownership and details of what the item is can be written to an RFID chip also known as a tag and the tag can then be taped inside the item that it is to safeguard.

There are two varieties of tag: the passive and the active. Passive tags will only respond if information is requested by a reader, whereas an active tag is always broadcasting.

Many business people use RFID tagging to keep track of their assets. In the instance of farm animals, most cattle are tagged these days. Most large offices have their IT goods tagged as well and we all know that fashion stores have been tagging clothes for years, although maybe you did not know what that button was that they were taking off at the till.

Individuals are already tagging their dogs, cats and cars and it will not be long before these asset management techniques will be used extensively at home as well. Insurance companies may demand on it.

Have you ever used a crock pot? Or what we call a slow cooker in the UK? My father gave me a crock pot for Christmas twenty-five years ago and I only had to replace it, because it got stolen. Some thief must have heard the were great and pinched it for his wife.

It was good-looking enough to leave out on the work top and I suppose that is how it caught my burglar’s eye. It was stoneware, really nice.

That is one of the points I would like to make in this article, some of the crock pots from the better manufacturers are pretty enough to take to the table. The other point I would like to make is that crock pots are not only for making soup or stews in.

I have recipes in the house for bread and cheesecake. Really, most people just do not believe me when I tell them what you can actually do with a crock pot, especially the modern programmable ones.

To prove it, I have reproduced one of my cheesecake recipes below. If you can not be bothered to make, just take it from me that it is gorgeous, simple enough to make and practically automatic to make. Those of you do get around to making it will agree with me, I am sure.

APPLE-NUT CHEESECAKE

Crust:

1 cup (scant) graham cracker crumbs 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons sugar 3 tablespoons butter, melted 1/4 cup finely chopped pecans or walnuts

Filling:

16 ounces cream cheese 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated white sugar 2 large eggs 3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 teaspoon vanilla Topping: 1 large apple, thinly sliced (about 1 1/2 cups) 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 cup sugar 1 tablespoon finely chopped pecans or walnuts

Combine the crust ingredients and pat into a 7-inch spring form pan. Beat the sugars into the cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Beat in eggs, whipping cream, cornstarch, and vanilla. Beat for about 3 minutes on the medium speed of a hand-held electric mixer. Pour the mixture into the prepared crust. Combine the apple slices with the sugar, cinnamon and nuts and then spread the topping evenly over the top of the cheesecake. Place the cheesecake on a rack (or “ring” of aluminum foil to keep it off the bottom of the pot) in the Crock Pot. Cover and cook on high for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Let it stand in the covered pot (after turning it off) for about 1 to 2 hours, until cool enough to handle. Cool it thoroughly before removing the pan sides. Chill before serving; store leftovers in the refrigerator for any normal shop-bought cheesecake, but yours will be better..

There can not be many people who do not like food, but the human race, being what it is, I guess there are a few. For the rest of us, food is a source of daily enjoyment and, like drink, it is often used to mark a celebration. not only that, but different foodstuffs are used for the different meals or definite occasions.

Celebratory meals were indubitably planned around the seasonal foods available, but some foods were transported great distances for the benefit of those who could pay for them. For example, my Dad thought it was a great treat to get an orange in his stocking on Christmas Day 60 years ago. How times have altered, very few children would think an orange a gift, special or otherwise, any day of the year nowadays.

Nonetheless, the storage of food is still a daily concern and so, I have listed a few top tips on storing food hereunder, so that you will get the best from what you have bought or grown long afterward.

The Smells Of Summer: the scent of fresh garden herbs are one of the joys of Summer. You can preserve many of these herbs in the following way. Take a suitably sized glass bottle and stuff your favourite herb into it until you can get not get even one more leaf in. Then fill it to the brim with your favourite oil olive oil (salad oil, not cooking oil). Leave it in the strong sunlight for two days if you are using basil or two weeks for tarragon. Allow the water to part from the oil and decant the oil off into another bottle. Just one or two drops of this oil on a salad or spaghetti will bring back Summer memoirs.

Bin Ends: sometimes, after a party for example, you may wake up to several small amounts of wine in different bottles. Of course, you can pour like wines into each other. When you are done, pour a teaspoon of olive oil into each bottle. This will create an air proof layer over the wine thereby preserving the wine for another week or two to go together with your favourite dinners – in the cooking process naturally.

Storing Garlic: cloves of peeled garlic will keep for months if you stuff them into a screw-topped jar and cover them with olive oil. As you use the garlic, top up with more olive oil. The oil will absorb some of the flavour of the garlic and make a fabulous (basis for a) salad dressing. If you have used tinned garlic, the rest can be preserved in the same way, but you should rinse and dry them first.

Saving Tomato Paste: if you suspect that you will not be able to use up the left over half a tin or tube of tomato paste quickly, you can put it into the ice cube tray and freeze it into blocks until you are ready to use it.

Parsley Crumble: keep bunches of parsley in the deep freeze. Then, when you need it, you can just crumple the head of the bunch in your hand immediately over the pot or plate where you require it and put it back in the freezer. The stalks can be used in the stock pot. in fact, this method works for all herbs.

Everybody likes a meal properly prepared. The proof of this, if it needs proving, is that members of religious orders like monks often have to eat boring food like porridge, gruel and unleaven bread for penance.

I would like to share a few tips with you to help you get the most out of your food.

Chicken Tarragon – I love chicken tarragon, but this is my favourite version. Take: 1 chicken; .25 teaspoon of chopped onions; 1 heaped tablespoon of dried tarragon (double of fresh); brown stock or Bovril and water, cream, flour and salt.

Roast the chicken, carve it and put in a plate. Pour off the fat and make a gravy with it, the salt and the flour. Bulk the gravy up with the stock or Bovril and water. Add the tarragon and cream and cook for a minute or two. Serve with the gravy already poured over the chicken or serve the gravy separately. Add your favourite vegetables. This recipe will serve four.

Chicken Left-Overs – if you are unsure what to do with left over chicken, you could do worse than try this recipe.

Chop the chicken up small and mix it with sliced avocado. Cover with mayonnaise and sprinkle with crumbled, fried, crispy bacon. If this sounds good to you, take it from me that it tastes even better.

Apple Sauce – if you like apple sauce with your pork, bake a couple of cooking apples beside your joint of pork. Prepare and core them just as you would as if you were going to prepare them normally. Sprinkle with sugar, if required. Then, run a knife tip around them, so that they will puff upwards, but still retain their form. Gorgeous.

Sauces – if you cannot get the sauce right, just strain it and do not tell anyone. Nobody will know the difference and what are strainers for if not straining?

Soups And Stews – if you find that you have added too much salt to a soup or stew at the last moment, do not be concerned. Put a cube of sugar in a large spoon and lower it into the liquid for twenty seconds. It will absorb the surplus salt. If you have longer, and it is appropriate, add a diced potato and it will absorb the salt too.

Pie Crust – if you want a quick, yet flexible topping for a savoury pie like chicken or beef, leave the pastry off. Take a large bag of crisps; pop the bag to let the air out and scrunch it up until the crisps are but crumbs. Pour this over your pie before you bake it. It is odd but you can experiment with different flavoured crisps.

Lake fishing is very similar to river fishing, or slow-flowing river fishing at any rate. The types of fish in rivers and lakes tend to be the same, which means that the tackle, bait and lures will be the same as well, although you might want a longer fishing rod, say, a beach-casting rod to cast your bait farther out into the lake. Lake fish will often mature to a larger size than river fish, so your line should be stronger too.

Lake fish conventionally been classified under three general headings. Namely, game fish, food fish, and bait fish. Bass, trout, pike, pickerel, muskellunge, perch, etc., are identified as game fish because of their sporting value. Carp, suckers, some of the catfish, yellow perch, etc., are considered food fish.

This second group is not considered to furnish the sport that the so-called game fish do, but they do have a genuine economic and recreational value. The third class are the minnows and tiddlers that can be used as bait for the first two classes.

It is not simple to descibe the correct technique to cast protracted distances, but it does come nuturally to quite a few anglers. Yet, if casting does not come easily to you, you will need to analyze other lake or beach anglers. If you are not happy doing that, you will be able to find a video on the subject. However, the best means to learn how to cast is to go down to the beach , observe an expert at work and attempt to do the same.

Nonetheless, lake fishing is enormous fun and the beginner will rapidly learn the correct method of lake fishing. Consequently, I have put a few practical tips here to help you learn lake fishing more quickly.

i]. Aim to take up a smooth, whip-like cast. Nevertheless, if you crack the whip too hard, you will certainly lose a lot of bait, flies or lures..

ii]. Timing is the all-important factor in both the back cast and forward cast.

iii]. Study the habits of the fish that dwell in the lake that you plan to fish. All fish have both similar and dissimilar ways of life, so either get a book or video or join a club to learn more.

iv]. Most fish like some kind of protection, either for themselves or because their prey will like it there. Be careful of weeds, reeds and submerged logs or you will lose heaps of line and tackle..

v]. As I mentioned before, lake fish tend to be larger, because food is copious and there is bags of room. A large bass, for example, can easily weigh 10-12 lbs, so make sure that your rod and line are up to the task. A rod of seven feet six inches to eight feet in length can tolerate these sizes of fish.

Lake fishing is not so truly unusual from other types of fishing, so if you put a little effort into learning the methods and fish concerned in lake fishing, you will soon master the skill and become an expert at lake fishing.

Everything that has to do with money take time to learn, this means that if you do not take care of how you spend your money, then you will find yourself in a continuous financial jam. This is not meant to frighten you from spending money, it is just meant to open your eyes to the reality that money has to be taken seriously, because people are failing to take responsibility for their actions involving mo

The horrible thing about debt is that once it starts, it always seems to escalate and then you can’t get out of the deep black hole. However, you frequently find that no matter how hard you try, you always end up needing to spend more money. A payday cash advance is the choice that a lot of people use.

This is due to the fact that more people are discovering how easy it is to meet all the financial requirements needed for a cash advance loan, which is in fact just a short-term loan. Application is now also made easier because people can now apply for these cash advances over the Internet instead of having to queue up in a store and wait.

There are many web sites offering cash advance loans, so you have a large selection from which to choose one. You have to pick the cash advance website that best suits your needs. Many cash advance websites have a policy on how much money you can borrow at maximum.

With a payday cash advance, you are able to pay back the money you have borrowed with your next pay check, which means that you make an agreement with the cash advance agency to borrow money now and then repay it when your next payday arrives.

Also, the interest that you pay back to the company is lower because the loan is so short term. However, if you need an extension on your loan, most companies will make you pay a fee of $25 for the processing of that loan extension.

Whatever the case, make sure you check your entire situation. Don’t take any rash decisions just because you need money right now. Instead, wait and see if there is any other way out. Don’t rule out help from friends and family, as this can mean the difference between being financially-dependent on cash advances or being able to pay back on friendlier terms.

Do you need to find out more about a 30 day payday loan?

There can not be many individuals who do not like their food, but the human race, being what it is, I expect that there are a few of them. However, for the remainder of us, cuisine is a font of daily enjoyment and, like drink, it is frequently used to denote a celebration. not only that, but various foodstuffs are used for the various meals or distinct celebrations.

Festive meals were undoubtedly planned around the seasonal foodstuffs available, but a number of foods were ferried enormous distances for the benefit of those who could afford them. For example, my father deemed it a grand treat to get an orange in his stocking on Christmas Day sixty years back. How the times have altered! Very few kids would think an orange a present, special or not, any day of the year in our time.

Nonetheless, the preservation of foodstuff is still a daily affair and therefore, I have written a couple of good tips on storing food underneath, so that you will get the best from what you have bought or grown in your garden even a long while later.

Chicken Stuffed With Spoons: a great way of preparing chicken to be eaten at a cold buffet or in sandwiches, is to put as many spoons as possible into the cavity of the chicken (not silver or plated ones though). Then, place the chicken in a large saucepan or pot and bring the water to the boil slowly. Simmer for 10 minutes, cover and leave until the water is room temperature. The spoons will retain the heat and cook the chicken from the inside out. it will be one of the most succulent chickens you have ever eaten.

Roasted Crisp And Light: if you like crisp-skinned roasties, it is best to parboil them first, but that is only half the story. so, boil the potatoes for five minutes and drain thoroughly. Put the lid on the pan and shake it about violently. Bang it hard on the chopping block several times. The harder the better. Then put the parboiled potatoes in the baking tray with the meat or fowl to cook as you would normally.

Salad Soup: Do not throw away salad that has been soaked in salad dressing. Whisk it up in a food processor with a can of tomatoes of tinned soup. Add lots of garlic to taste and adjust the thickness to suit your taste. Chill it down and you will have one of the most delicious summer soups ever.

Curdling Cure: if your mayonnaise has curdled there is one sure fire way to bring it back to life. stir in a couple of tablespoons of Hellmann’s mayonnaise and your problem will be over.

Simply Scrumptious Topping: a really, quick, delicious and almost infinitely variable topping for a savory pie can be made in seconds. Choose the flavour you want from the crisp rack; puncture the bag to let our the air and then crush the contents in the gag. it really adds something to a pie. The same trick can be used on the bottom of a potato pie a Texan housewife told me.

Preparation Of Foods: Dairy Produce.

Preparation Of Foods: Dairy Produce.

Eggs: Part Two

Poaching: boil 40mm water in a frying pan; add a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of vinegar. Crack egg into cup, inspect and tip into water. Turn down the heat. Gather the white around the unbroken yolk with a spoon and simmer for 3-4 mins. Lift out with a fish slice, drain and serve on hot buttered toast.

Scrambling: beat the eggs well; add salt, pepper to taste and a dash of milk. Melt enough butter to cover the bottom of a shallow pan. Heat the eggs slowly, stirring continuously. Cook in a basin floating in boiling water, if preferred. Serve when almost completely set, in about 5 mins.

Fried: Melt enough fat to easily cover the bottom of a shallow pan. Tip egg in gently and gather the whites around the yolks. When the white has set, baste the yolk to taste and remove whole with a draining spoon.

Baking: lightly grease a fireproof dish and slide eggs into it. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and butter. Bake in a moderate oven and serve in the same pan after the whites have set.

Omelette: buy a pan and keep it only for omelettes! The base should be smooth and clean. Allow two eggs per person; beat lightly and add salt and pepper to taste. Heat enough butter to cover the base of the pan. When the fat is hot, pour in the eggs; as it sets, raise the handle up and draw set mixture up, allowing the liquid egg to run down onto the hot pan. When all is set, tilt the pan forward and roll the omelette over. Serve immediately on a hot plate. It can be filled with almost anything, before being rolled over.

Pouring Custard: beat 2-3 eggs for every one pint of milk lightly. Heat the milk and pour gradually over the eggs; add sugar and flavouring to taste; cook in a double pan or jug and hot water until the required consistency has been achieved. If it is not to be served immediately, pour a thin layer of water onto it to stop a skin forming.

Baked Custard: start as above and then transfer the custard into a greased dish; sprinkle lightly with nutmeg and place dish in water to halfway up its sides. Bake at 350 F for 35-45 mins; test its solidity by inserting a knife – it should be clean on removal.

Steamed Custard: as baked custard, but cook in a steamer or pan of boiling water. The cooking time is about the same too.

Custard Tarts: pour pouring custard into unbaked pastry cases and bake in the oven for 40-50 minutes. A little jam can be placed at the bottom of the pastry case first, if preferred.

Whether you are cooking for two for romance or out of necessity, you will discover that there are many resources online and off to help you find the perfect meals for your marvelous twosomes. One thing to bear in mind however is that when cooking for two, it is sometimes best if two are doing the cooking. This permits cooking to become a chance for communication rather than just a chore.

Despite the fact that there are many resources and recipes available to those that are cooking for two, there are even more recipes for those cooking for four, especially the traditional recipes that are designed to feed a family of four. These provide an opening to stretch your food budget even further.

By cooking traditional meals for four and eating half of it, you have managed to cook two meals for the time investment of one. It is a good deal for many, but particularly for those that do not like the idea of cooking at all.

Young and older couples alike frequently discover that it is as easy and almost the equivalent cost to go to a fast food or other informal restaurant as it is to prepare a pleasant, healthy meal for two at home. The one thing they often forget is that cooking for two can be an appealing way to bring a little romance into the evening.

When cooking for two, you will have as much occasion to be imaginative as in anything else you do in your life. You have the option of trying appetizing new recipes and the knowledge that if you do not like the food, you are not wasting a lot of money.

You can try mixing and matching flavors and textures. You can make works of art on your plate as in nouveau cuisine. Or you can go farmhouse style. Cooking for two opens doors that are not readily available when cooking for larger numbers with more limiting tastes.

Cooking for two is a great way to get your partner involved in the cooking process as well. When cooking for two you can find out the things that you both like and those that are not so appealing to one or the other of you.

Make sure that when you are cooking for two that you induce an open and honest dialog about the things that you like and dislike about the meals being cooked. This will help you determine things to add to your regular menu as well as the things to avoid making a part of your dinner rotation.

Perhaps the best thing about cooking for two is the fact that you can afford to try special occasion cuisine more often when you are cooking for only two than when you are cooking for a larger crowd. Bring on the steaks and lobster tail. Learn how to make shrimp scampi and fillet mignon. Take the time, when cooking for two, to prepare those dishes that you enjoy most.

Cooking for two is a great way of exploring the culinary universe and exposing your palates to some amazing surprises along the way. The Internet, bookstores, and libraries are filled with books about cooking for two. Take advantage of the chance to do just that and you will be amazed at the world of flavors you have been missing out on.

The purpose of this article is to help the beginner fly fishing. The terminology and the basic methods employed in fly fishing may be unknown to the beginner at fly fishing, so we will start from the very beginning. So, if you are a beginner fly fishing person, please read on in order to become acquainted with fly fishing.

The things needed for fly fishing are usually called tackle, although if you want to be more specific about the sort of tools you need, you can add the words “fly fishing”. So, you get the phrase: “fly fishing tackle”. Fly fishing gear basically comprises artificial flies, a fly rod, a fly reel and fly line. The set-up is: the fly is attached to the line, which is wound around the reel, which is attached to the rod, which is used to cast the bait (the fly).

To make it easier to cast the fly as far as required from the angler, the line needs to be a little weightier than the other kinds of fishing line, since a weight is used in other kinds of fishing to achieve the same result. Also, the artificial flies are made in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colours to look like real, live flies, depending on the type of fish the angler wants to catch.

In general, an artificial fly is made of hair, plastic, feathers, fabric, fur and many other types of material in order to ensure the flies resemble, as closely as possible, the insect or fly most commonly eaten by the particular species of fish in that particular month or at that time of the day. This means that each fishing spot requires that you select a definite kind of artificial fly that will look like the insects living in the area where your desired type of fish frequent. Therefore, a kind of fly used in one area of the region may not work as well as you’d think elsewhere.

However, there are classifications of flies too, although they fall into two basic general categories, which are known as ‘attractive’ and ‘imitative’. The imitative artificial flies resemble real flies, while the attractive lures just rely on colour or the reflection of sunlight in order to lure fish without necessarily resembling the fish’s normal diet.

These classifications are then used to further sub-divide artificial fly fishing lures into: a] dry (imitating grasshoppers, dragonflies, etc. which float on or near the surface of the water); b] sub-surface (resembling larvae, pupae) and c] wet (imitating leeches and minnows and other small fish or fry).

The main distinguishing feature between fly fishing and non-fly fishing is that fly fishing depends to a great extent on the weight of the line to carry the artificial lure to that area of the water where the fish are schooling, probably at some distance from the angler. The line is often camouflaged and hollow like electrical wire coating, so that it will float.

Non-fly fishing depends rather on the attached weight, usually made of lead, to draw the line off the reel and carry it forward to the right spot, where the weight will also take the bait or lure down to the feeding fish.

The money from cash advance companies can usually be in your account within 24 hours and that is why it is such a popular method of getting the emergency cash that you need. Many people are dubious about getting a cash advance because they are not sure about the length of time that it takes for the money to be transferred into their bank.

However, the whole application process is pretty quick and simple and If you apply for a cash advance and receive approval, you can be sure that you will receive the money in your account within a few days and often within twenty-four hours too. The online cash advance form is meant to be easy to complete because every loan company understands that you are in dire need of a loan and that any bit of help they can give to make it easier to receive that cash will be highly prized among its clients.

The whole process of getting a cash advance is generally very quick. To apply for a cash advance loan, you just complete a simple application form and then before you know it, the money is in your account and ready for your use. Of course, repaying it is not quite so simple, you could take months to pay it back, but you would already know how long the repayment process would be, when you sign the cash advance form.

Online cash advances do seem to be quicker solutions to cash needs than applying for offline cash advances mainly due to the “no credit rating check” that they boast. Online cash advances will make the application process quicker for you because a “no credit rating check” means that no time will be wasted looking into your credit rating. This way, there will be no time lost assessing whether you are eligible for their cash advance.

Because of a speedy and simple process like this, online loan companies can usually promise a reply within 24 hours after you have completed their the cash advance application form. They realize what kind of situation you are in and will help you expedite whole process.

All they ask is that you meet a few requirements, like being over the age of majority (18 or 21) and earning at least $1,200 a month. Ensuring that their customers meet these requirements is a safety net for many firms and their clients, so that they know that you can make the instalments with your wages.

Furthermore, it is also well-known that if the loan firm is quick to make a decision about the advance, then the chances of you recommending them to a friend who also has a cash problem, is quite high, which means good, free advertising for the payday loan company.

With a world population in excess of six billion people, we are all becoming increasingly aware that food is a scarce resource. Traditionally, people have not seen food as a resource, but more of a birthright. However, the populations of many Third World countries are forced to be more pragmatic.

We in the West are continuously bombarded by implorations for donations by charities and I think that many people are getting a bit weary of it. I also think that people are mistrustful of the charity workers’ expenses and fees, especially after the MPs’ expenses scandal in the UK. So, what can you do, if you want to make some sort of contribution?

I think that the best thing one can do is not to squander food. Not squandering or wasting food will decrease the quantity you have to buy, which will leave more on the supermarket shelves. This will increase supply, which will decrease prices. Therefore, by not buying so much food, you will be saving money and reducing the price of what you do buy. Can not be bad, can it?

So, here are a few of my favourite money-saving tips.

Funnel – I have bought a few funnels in my time, but they always seemed to have fallen to the back of the cupboard when I needed one. I do not buy them anymore. Instead, I cut the top 9″ off the top of a plastic cola bottle. When I am done with it, I throw it away, especially if I used it for pouring oil.

Microwave – sometimes, when you open the microwave oven door, a whiff of the last meal comes out. Instead of spending money on cleaners or what-not, put a slice of lemon in a saucer of water and microwave it for three minutes after every time you use it.

Cabbage – boiling cabbage really smells! However, there are three ways of hiding the smell without using air freshener. The first way is to put a slice of lemon in the cabbage water as it cooks. The second way is to boil a small pan of vinegar next to the cooking cabbage and the third is to place a sieve over the cooking cabbage and put a round of stale bread in it. These techniques work because the lemon cancels the smell of the cabbage as does the vinegar and the stale bread absorbs the smell.

Fish Fingers – it is not nice to have smelly fingers after preparing fish, onions or garlic. As an alternative to washing and washing your hands, rub a little lemon juice on them and rinse for immediate relief.

Sponge – a tablespoon of hot water beaten into a sponge mixture at the last minute will greatly enhance the rise and the texture of the cake.

Deep sea fishing is a well-known great activity that a lot of families enjoy together. Deep sea fishing is a sport that will create for you and your family tremendous experiences and unforgettable memories that can last for a lifetime. The amount of family bonding in such a natural environment is just wonderful.

If you’re new to this wonderful pastime, there are a few things that you need to know before you commence with your deep sea fishing trip. It is indeed just one big adventure for you and your family, however, you should consider some things first to make sure your trip is a successful one. Other than not forgetting to take your camera for those thrilling snapshots, here are some things that you should think about before making any plans at all.

Time of Reckoning: Are They Really Up to it? First of all, you must take an honest look at the capabilities and age of your family. Lets be honest about it: you cant really get the most out of a deep sea fishing trip, if your children are too young – you’ll spend the whole trip worrying about them. If you’re trying to decide what kind of excursion to make, thinking about these things is very important, because the sea is a dangerous, unrelenting environment.

This would be an important factor, even if you are thinking of using the services of a charter boat, since most boating companies have set age limits. Generally speaking, the lower age limit usually starts at about eight years old. You should understand that companies set these kinds of rules to guarantee your safety.

Furthermore, you should consider how long you want to stay at sea. Most inexperienced fishermen would rather a half-day trip, because they are less tiring and yet still enjoyable for the whole family. On the other hand, experienced anglers would often rather an overnight trip.

However, regardless of how long you have been fishing, you should still remember that your family’s physical comfort could affect the overall enjoyment of everyone on the trip. Factors such as temperament and age play important roles in how your family can adjust to a temporary life on a boat.

Be Conscious of Distance: another important consideration is how far away your target fishing location is from your home. The fishing packages available can vary greatly, depending on the charter company.

This means that the provisions that they will give you on the boat will also differ. If you will be travelling a great distance just to fish, you might be more interested in buying a package that is ‘all inclusive’, because it will provide you with everything you’ll need for the fishing trip.

However, all inclusive packages like these are usually quite hard to find, and of course, they are far more expensive than average day trip packages. An average package usually provides you with bait and tackle. If you need a license, some packages include it, while others can charge you extra for it.

Get to Know The Terms and Conditions: In general, charter boat skippers require you to take your own hats, sunshades, coats, sun block, medicines for travel sickness and everything else that you think is necessary to take. Ensure that you are clothed appropriately with a series of warm layers, since it is far colder on the water than on land and you can always take something off.

Furthermore, most of the day charter trip packages ask you to take your own food. If this is the case, you should act accordingly. Try to pack items of food that are easy on your stomach, just in case the seas are a bit rough.

So, you have decided that you want to learn how to fish. There are a few ways of learning, the hardest being trial and error. The best way is to find an instructor for one-to-one lessons.

So, you have decided that you want to learn how to fish. There are several methods of learning, the hardest being trial and error. The best way is to find an instructor for one-on-one lessons.

1. Get seasickness medication: If you’re going to fish on the water, nothing is worse than having your fishing trip ruined by seasickness. Most seasickness medicine is appropriate (e.g. Bonine). Even seasoned fishermen take some on rough-weather days. Take one tablet before you go to sleep, another when you wake up and a third one before you go on board.

2. Get a good reference book: There are a lot of very good books available at your local bookstores or online. The book ought to give you instructions as well as the terms and definitions. There are some things you may not immediately understand but that you should know anyway. One good thing is to learn how to tie different types of knots. This useful knowledge will also be invaluable for other purposes throughout your whole life.

3. Get on a party boat: There are party vessels that carry from five to as many as sixty anglers. The boat will usually provide you with everything you need from bait, lures, rod, reel, weights to hooks. They will show you how to fish and even take the fish off the hook for you too. You will make plenty of new fishing mates on board and they will help and advise you. Party boats will usually cost between $25 – $70 a day per person and the fish you catch are yours to keep. A party boat is a boon for novices.

4. Select a pier: Assuming you have already acquired the skills to operate a rod and reel, you ought to look for a fishing pier. Most seaside cities have a public pier or pay-to-fish pier. You can rent tackle and buy bait on these piers and, if you do have problems, there are plenty of pier anglers around to assist and give you tips.

5. Party or pier?: You may want to try either method three or four times or both at the same time at this point. The best thing to do is to practise both ways several times to really learn them.

6. The reel way: The conventional reel is probably what you’ve got at this point. The traditional reel is made to take a lot of wear and tear. However, perhaps you now ought to think about purchasing a different type or / and make of reel. Ideally, you have already met other anglers and perhaps made a friend or two who can assist you in choosing a reel. You could also ask a fishing equipment store owner for advice.

Firstly, you ought to learn the mechanism of the reel and the other equipment. Learning to cast, tie knots and bait is not really all that complicated. Secondly, you need to learn where to fish. Successful fishermen know where the fish are located. Fish move from place to place and clever anglers understand these patterns and are able to work out where the fish are likely to be schooling.

Mardi Gras is a special time of the year down in Cajun Country. Even if you don't live down in New Orleans you can still rejoice in some of the fun and revelry associated with Mardi Gras by throwing a grand old meal worthy of King Rex himself.

Mardi Gras is a special time of the year down in Cajun Country. Even if you don’t live down in New Orleans you can still rejoice in some of the fun and revelry associated with Mardi Gras by throwing a grand old meal worthy of King Rex himself.

The trick about bringing Mardi Gras to the Midwest or wherever you may be, is to always have the mindset that makes Mardi Gras such fun and an enjoyable event for people from all over the world. If that doesn’t work a bowl or two of gumbo topped off with some Mardi Gras music should do the trick quite nicely.

Seriously though, part of the charm and intrigue of Mardi Gras and the city of New Orleans is the cuisine that has made this city almost as famous as its ability to party. If you are wondering what to cook to bring the spirit of Mardi Gras into your home, try any of the traditional favorites. If ingredients prove tricky to come by you might want to add a little rice, a little spice, and a lot of hot sauces to your favorite family meal.

Those who live in New Orleans often use rice to stretch the budget. Rice is filling and is cost effective. This makes rice a great basis of a meal for many of the families of New Orleans many of whom have been pretty poor traditionally.

Rice is used in all manner of dishes from gumbo to red beans and jambalaya and many dishes in between. It is almost certainly the one staple of Cajun cuisine that you will find everywhere you go.

Otherwise there are wide variances in cookery according to cost and culture (though the more expensive foods are typically considered Creole rather than Cajun. Sort of a city cousin – country cousin type relationship between the cuisines).

Spices are prevalent in these dishes for much the same reason that rice is. They have traditionally been an inexpensive method of seasoning food that would otherwise be quite insipid. Expect to find plenty of spices and some heat in most traditional Cajun dishes all over the city. Some restaurants that cater to tourists have slightly watered down versions of local favorites.

If you want to eat something with a little less kick, a po-boy or muffaletta might be what you are looking for. These sandwiches are more than a little deceiving in appearance because they are very filling. French fries are still a Cajun favorite, although we also have a popular dish called fried sweet potatoes.

You can find recipes for all of these online quite easily though you will probably have trouble finding the perfect bread for a po boy anywhere outside the Crescent City. There is a unique “chewiness” to the perfect po boy bread that may be copied in other places but not equaled anywhere in the country.

For the best finish to your Cajun cooking you should make a point of buying some chicory coffee. This is easily accomplished via the Cafe du Monde website if your local coffee shop doesn’t have any. Historically, chicory was added to coffee and often used instead of coffee because it was much cheaper.

This meant it could make the more expensive coffee beans go further and yet deliver a similar taste and texture with that hint of chicory. It’s a somewhat unique flavor and for many people is synonymous with the city itself.

About The Basic Preparation Of Foodstuffs: Dairy Products.

About The Basic Preparation Of Foodstuffs: Dairy Products.

CHEESES

Cheeses are manufactured from milk which has been naturally or artificially turned sour. The first method is achieved by standing the milk in a warm place and allowing natural, beneficial bacteria to convert the milk’s natural sugars into lactic acid. The second method is effected by adding an agent, usually rennet.

Salt and colouring and frequently put in too. The whey is then allowed to drain away and the curds are pressed into moulds where they are kept until ripened or cured. Some cheeses, usually hard ones, are subjected to pressure; soft cheeses are not. Curds are ripened or cured by various means. The way it’s done, the quality of the milk, the breed of cow, sheep or other animal and its pasture, and the type of bacteria all govern the end result.

Some local conditions are unique and those areas produce cheeses that are not successfully copied anywhere else: for example Roquefort and Edam, although factories do try. They even have some success, just think most of the world’s Cheddar cheese now comes from the USA and Canada.

The constituents of cheese are typically: 33% fat, 33% protein and 33% water with salt, colouring, sugar etc making up the rest. These percentages vary from region to region as some producers use full-cream milk, others skimmed-milk and yet others add extra cream. Some add extra sugar, most do not. All cheeses have a high calcium content and may be considered ‘concentrated milk’ and stored as such.

Many people say that cheese must not be kept in a fridge and although storing in water, as for milk, is not a viable option, a cool larder is certainly ideal. Try the traditional method of suspending it from a hook in muslin in a cool, breezy place. If it is hot, moisten the cheesecloth with water to which a little vinegar has been added.

in Europe, cheese is frequently served with a salad or/and bread and is often presented after or instead of the dessert course. Hard cheese can be nigh-on impossible for children to digest and grating it first will make it more edible for them. After being grated the cheese can be scattered on vegetables or fish soups or sauces; combined with egg, pasta, rice and oatmeal dishes; put on baked potatoes or pastry; toasted on bread or put in sandwiches or salads.

How To Cook Cheese: A little known fact is that many people find cooked cheese indigestible and the reason lies in its structure. Here is why: cooked starch can be digested by the saliva in the mouth but other foods must pass to the stomach or intestines for this process. They are, however, broken up in the mouth. Digestion of protein begins in the stomach and is completed in the small intestine, while fat is not rendered soluble until it reaches the small intestine.

Cheese has a high fat and protein content, but when melted, the fat frequently covers the protein and stops the digestive juices reaching it in the stomach. This results in, its digestion is delayed until the fat has been absorbed by the intestines. Cheese can be made more digestible in the following way:

a] Combining it with some starchy foodstuff, since the starch will absorb the fat, not allowing it to cover the protein.

2] Using seasoning: Cayenne Pepper or mustard will irritate the intestinal lining, causing the release of extra digestive juices.

3] Cooking quickly at high temperature. This prevents the protein from becoming tough and stringy and therefore, harder to digest. Add cheese late to sauces.

4] Adding alkali: so, generous pinch of Bicarbonate of Soda per 75g (3 ozs) will help neutralize the fatty acids and make the proteins easier to digest.

Some of these crock pots are programmable, which gives the cook more flexibility that the slow cookers of twenty years did not.

The first crock pots had only an on/off switch and no temperature control. This had the consequence that the meals you could prepare with them were restricted, if you used your crock pot for cooking food while you were out of the house at work for eight hours or more. Modern slow cookers like those crock pots mentioned previously have revolutionized all that. Nowadays, modern crock pots are programmable.

These modern crock pots are very flexible and with the finest of them, you can set the temperature that the slow cooker should function at and the duration of time it should cook for just like a microwave oven. For example, you could program a modern slow cooker to cook at, say, 180c for an hour and then 100c for two hours

Most people do not appreciate the features that modern crock pots have. Regrettably, there are still a lot of individuals who still believe that slow cookers are only any good for cooking rice, boiling soup or preparing cheap cuts of meat like scrag end of mutton. This is just not true any more, although manual crock pots were capable of more than that as well. Modern variable slow cookers can be used to make bread, cheesecake, custards and even sponges.

In fact, it is a good idea to get away from the old fashioned concepts people have about slow cookers and try to perceive them as an oven, which does not need a pot to cook in. Try the recipe underneath and judge for yourself.

BANANA BREAD

1 3/4 c flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1/3 c shortening 2/3 c sugar 2 eggs, well beaten 1 1/2 c banana, well mashed, overripe 1/2 c walnuts, coarsely chopped

Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. With the electric beater on low, fluff shortening in a small bowl, until it is soft and creamy. Add the sugar gradually. Beat in the eggs in a slow stream. With a fork, beat in 1/3 of the flour mixture, ? the bananas another 1/3 of the flour mixture, the rest of the bananas and then the last of the flour mixture. Fold in the walnuts. Turn into a greased and floured baking unit or a 2 1/2 quart mold and cover.

Place on a rack in your crock pot. Cover the crock pot, but prop the lid open with a toothpick or a twist of foil to let the excess steam escape. Cook on HIGH for 4 to 6 hours. Cool on a rack for 10 minutes. Serve Warm.

In the West, alcoholic drinks are never far away from the scene at festive times, but do we aways know how to get the most from these expensive luxuries? Too many people these days just think its a question of ‘getting as much down as possible in as little time as possible’. This is the wrong attitude.

After all, most people understand that a good meal does not consist of eating as many chips as possible in fifteen minutes, so why should that theory not apply to having a drink too? You will get far more enjoyment from a bottle of wine, if you spend an extra dollar on it and drink it slowly with a friend and some suitable food than if you gurgle down a cheap bottle of plonk on your own. It makes obvious sense, but not everyone realizes it.

So, with that idea in mind, I have put together a few tips on how to get more enjoyment from your alcoholic drinks, if you are old enough and of that turn of mind.

Gin and Vodka – if these white spirits are your proffered tipple, always keep the bottle in the fridge, not the drinks cabinet. Keep the mixers in the fridge too. That way the ice will last longer and you will not be tempted to have to swig it down before the ice melts. If you are having friends around, go one step further and put the bottle in the freezer. It will not go solid. You can even cut the top off a plastic cola bottle, put the bottle of gin or vodka in that, fill it with water and then freeze it. Take off the plastic bottle and you have an attractive “collar of ice” around your bottle.

The Last Tot – five minutes or so after finishing a bottle of spirits, tip it out one more time and the bottle that you thought was drained will deliver one more tot of contents. It is not a lot, but it is a pleasant free surprise. The same works for many alcohol based products including underarm roll-on and scent.

White Wine – white wines taste best when they have been gently chilled over a prolonged length of time, but if you get taken by surprise visitors, put the bottle of wine in a container of ice and cold water. Try not to have to put it in the deep freeze, it is too severe, but if you have to, then ten minutes is all that it takes.

Port – it is always better to decant port and older, heavier red wines, because of the sediment that may be in the bottom of the bottle, which tastes awful and because it aids the aeration of the wine. However, it is not always easy to see when the dregs are coming. The manuals say to use a candle, but they were written a hundred years ago. The strong beam from a flashlight is far better. Try using a Durabeam because its swivel head allows it to be directed more precisely.

Decanters – sometimes the stopper becomes stuck fast. Tap it with another glass item and it should come free. If not, run the neck of the decanter under hot water for a few seconds and it will come out.

Labels – if you store your wine in a damp place where the labels are likely to rot or fall off, spray them with hair lacquer first.

Whether you are genuinely seeking opportunities to explore new cultures or you are Jewish looking for appetizing recipes and cooking tips, you have come to the right place to get some of the essentials. For as long as there have been family traditions, eating good food at special events and during festive times has been a part of the jollity.

Unfortunately, that appetizing food cannot be enjoyed unless someone goes to the trouble of actually preparing it. If you are looking for some tasty treats to do with the Hanukkah celebrations or just want to get a taste of what other cultures do during their religious or cultural celebrations there are lots of great foodstuffs you could be cooking for this particular holiday.

Oil is imperative in the celebration of Hanukkah and, as a result, many of the foodstuffs that are part of Hanukkah celebrations are prepared in oil. One popular favorite is Latkes, which are a kind of potato pancake that is deep-fried. Another popular favorite is fried lamb chops. The lamb is breaded and then fried much like many Americans fry chicken. Once again oil is used in the cooking of the meal.

If you are thinking about something more like finger food or a snack, you could consider deep-fried ricotta balls, fried zucchini, fried onion rings and fried mozzarella are appetizing savory fried delights for the season of light. Of course, fried food is not the only thing that is eaten during this 8-day celebration, but it does play a vital part in the menu and in the festivities.

Even the sweet treats for this celebration include a few fried goodies. There are apple fritters and raspberry dough nuts and lots of other luscious fried foods for you to snack on. If you like something a little sinful to eat during this delightful celebration you might like to try blintzes in your favorite flavor. There are many to pick from and their recipes can be found easily online.

If you would like to provide something a little healthier in your cuisine, then you might wish to include an Israeli salad, stewed white beans, and baked aubergines and peppers. These meals provide the opportunity to consume something that is not either fried or sweet to help weight watchers, who always have a problem during holiday seasons no matter which religion they observe.

Other Hanukkah favorites include appetizing dishes such as cheese gelt coins, loukoumades, vegetable kugel, and brisket. Once again the recipes for these dishes are very widely available online and in books on Jewish cooking and traditions.

To make things go a little more efficiently prepare as much food as possible well ahead and store items away quickly in order to stop them going off. Enlist the assistance of children and other family members when needed to move things along by taking turns preparing food.

You should also make an effort to keep the preparations as simple as possible to avoid delays and stress. This is a time of the year that is meant to be dedicated to celebration not to struggling to cook tons of food. The good news is that with all that deep fried food, it is unlikely that you will find these dishes too difficult to cook. Good luck and have fun exploring the world of cooking for Hanukkah.

In these times of superior awareness of the shortages in the world and the recent economic problems in the whole world, but particularly in the wealthy Western countries, which are the powerhouses of most Third World countries’ progress, people are more aware of waste. It is a sin again to throw away food, like it was 50 years ago.

This can only be a good thing although it is a shame that it took an international financial disaster to make us recall the lesson. Nowadays, waste of any kind is greeted with public censure and so it is at home too. Most people spend a very high proportion of their outgoings on food and so anyone who wants to cut back, has to first look to this quarter to make a saving.

However, saving does not inevitably mean ‘not buying’, it can and should mean ‘not throwing away’. In other words, prepare your food and do not let your food go off. Preparation and storage are the key words. With that thought in mind, here are a few of my tips for preparing and storing food correctly.

Bread – tons of bread is thrown away every day, because it has gone stale or mouldy and yet it is totally unnecessary. Keep your bread in the deep freezer and not in the bread bin. A whole loaf will slice frozen with the proper knife and sliced bread will come away slice by slice. There is no requirement to defrost as it only takes a minute or two at room temperature.

Bananas – most people understand that banana skins go black if stored in the fridge, but most people do not know that bananas can be frozen solid. Yes, the skins will still turn black, but the fruit will be unharmed.

Cake – to prevent cake from going fusty, store it in a tin with an apple. The moisture in the apple will stop the cake from going hard.

Watercress – to keep watercress from wilting, store it upside down in water, that is stalks up.

Salt – salt often gets damp, particularly if stored in a steamy kitchen without sufficient ventilation, but you do not have to fret about that if you put two or three grains of rice in the salt cellar. They will absorb the moisture before the salt.

Cereal – prevent cereal from going soft by resealing the bag with a few clothes pegs. Your cereal will last weeks more.

Jam – boiling jam makes a scum which has to be skimmed off and thrown away. This wastes jam, goodness and flavour. However, if you whisk a knob of butter into the mixture at the last moment the scum will not materialize, saving time and goodness.

Funnel – you always seem to need a funnel when you do not have one. Then you vow to get a funnel for the next time. Do not bother. Just cut the top nine inches off a plastic bottle of cola. It makes an excellent throw-away funnel. Some of the larger bottles even have a handle on them which is even better.

There can not be a lot of individuals who do not enjoy their food, but the human race, being what it is, I suppose that there are a few of them. However, for the rest of us, food is a font of daily enjoyment and, like a beverage, it is frequently employed to denote a happy event. not only that, but various foods are used for the different meals or distinct events. Celebratory meals were indubitably planned around the seasonal foodstuffs available, but some foodstuffs were transported huge distances for the benefit of those who could afford them. For example, my Dad considered it a grand treat to be given an orange in his stocking on Christmas Day 60 years past. How the times have changed! Very few children would judge an orange a present, special or not, any day of the year nowadays.

Nonetheless, the preservation of food is still a daily affair and therefore, I have written a few good guidelines on preserving foodstuff below, so that you will obtain the best from that which you have bought or grown in your garden even a long while later.
