Keeping Cats Out Of The Garden

It is very difficult to keep cats out of your garden, but do not give up, it can be managed. Cat owners may not understand why gardeners want to prevent cats gaining access to their gardens, but there are justifiable reasons, it is not always that gardeners hate cats. Cats are ferocious hunters and can also be very destructive.

For example, my next door neighbour had a cat, but felt lonely when her daughter moved away, so she permitted the cat to to have young. Now she has six cats. But cats are not like dogs. My dog stays in my garden not upsetting anyone apart from by barking if a stranger walks past the gate However, that is his job and he is not only telling me but the neighbours as well. These six cats do not stay in their own garden though, so we have all acquired six cats whether we want them or not.

The first problem I became aware of was that birds stopped coming to pick my dog’s bowl clean in the afternoon. Then I saw a cat eating a lizard, a beautiful nine inch specimen and then I remembered not seeing a lot of lizards lately. There is one lizard, the Tokay, that they have completely wiped out – I used to listen to them calling at night, but no more.

Cats also dig up flowers when they defecate and use furniture as clawing boards, so I do not want these destructive animals in my garden. But how do you keep cats out of your garden?

Walls are rarely protection against cats, but cats will often prowl along the bottom of walls and if they come across a hole, they will probably go in out of inquisitiveness, so repair all low-level gaps in your fences. There is not much you can do about the top of your wall other than putting broken glass or electrified wiring up there, but that is not a good idea.

Some dogs are good at keeping cats away, but not all. My dog got a nasty and totally unexpected swipe of claws across his nose one day. He used to chase them when they were kittens, but now they have grown up, he only growls to tell me a cat is on the property. I cannot blame him.

In Australia, many gardeners reckon that transparent bottles full of water bewilder cats, so they stay away, but in my experience, only Australian cats react in that way.

A row of prickly bushes or flowers along the base of a wall where cats regularly come in works. At the bottom of high walls too, where the cat cannot see them until he is on top of the wall. I often see cats mewing (in frustration, I hope) on the top of one of my walls. The only way down is to go back.

If you still cannot keep cats out, then you will need to train them not to come in. This is easiest accomplished by using a few methods. If cats are using your flower pots are conveniences, try smearing the pots with pepper, lavender, lemon, mustard, or tobacco. Or you could leave a mothball in each pot. Some of these will have the desired result for you, others will not.

Then there are industrial repellents, but I do not want to resort to them. However, if you have a big garden and a big problem, it might be the only way. There are also high frequency sound emitters. Humans cannot hear them, but almost all animals can, so I think that that is deplorable as well.

At night, motion-activated exterior lighting is a great shock to cats. Cats have very sensitive night vision so a quick flash from a floodlamp really puts them off a garden.

The best deterrent is water. You can buy motion-activated sprinklers, which are excellent at keeping cats out of your garden, but I like to sit in my office or in the garden with a powerful water pistol and squirt them by hand. The lizards have not come back yet, but nor do the cats quite so often either.

How You Could Landscape Your Garden In The Texas Style

Most people just let their garden mature naturally in that they do not select a particular style. This is all right, but it can become a hodge-podge, if not looked after. Some people, however, consciously choose to landscape their garden according to a certain style or a theme. Some of these themes are very sophisticated and others are quite simple.

One of the many themes to pick from is the Texas Style. We all know that everything in Texas is done on a large scale, so you would be forgiven for thinking that landscaping in the Texas Style would necessitate a huge garden.

It is possibly easier to carry out your landscaping in the Texas Style in a larger garden, but it just depends how you go about it.

The first things to remember are that Texas is very hot and so the terrain closely resembles wilderness. Plants and shrubs are thin on the ground, so to speak. Landscaping in the Texas Style is what you might call minimalist gardening.

You will have to make use of every square inch of your property, if you only have a small plot and the average temperature will have to be fairly warm in the daytime although it is good if it gets chilly at night. This will allow you to grow many of the plants that flourish or at least grow in Texas. One good thing about Texan plants is that when they do bloom, they really do show a lot of colour.

One of the kinds of plant that you are sure to have success with is the cactus. There are many varieties of cactus, so you should not have too much difficulty finding several types that will grow in your garden in order to produce a Texan dry climate look, as long as it does not rain every other day where you live.

Cacti yield magnificent flowers when they blossom, but they have big thorns, so if you have young children, the Texas Style garden may not be for you for a few years yet.

Once you have your flora sorted out, you can begin looking for accessories. You can pick up ideas from the old cowboy films and from magazines, but a few suggestions are: a chow wagon style barbecue area with a canvas hood; some broken wagon wheels; a well, working or not (it could even be a fish pond that looks like a well); boulders and wooden fence posts.

Boulders are usually overlooked by gardeners but there are some intriguing stones, boulders and rocks in all kinds of shapes and colours. Boulders with fossils in them are great conversation starters. Smaller rocks can be used to create a rock garden and this will expand the choice of plants that you can grow in your Texas Style garden. You will be able to plant succulents, small cacti and other small plants that frequently grow in this austere environment.

Lighting should be low and subtle so that you can see the stars at night. You could even have a camp fire with log seating or you can achieve this look by using low powered solar lighting. Solar powered lighting will also save you from having to have an electrician wire up your garden.

When you have finished landscaping in the Texas Style, do not forget to get pleasure from it by eating outside as often as you can. Barbecues, steaks and Texmex food are the order of the day.

The Beauty Of Moroccan Decor

Moroccan furniture is usually solid wood and stylish. Morocco is an ex-French colony, but it is very near Spain as well. In fact, two small parts of Morocco, Melilla and Ceuta are still under Spanish jurisdiction.

This means that Moroccan furnishings and decor has Berba, Arabic, French and Spanish influences. These Mediterranean influences are obvious in traditional and contemporary Moroccan furniture.

When combined with Moroccan decor and colours, Moroccan furniture can change your home. Walls are normally emulsioned plain white or cream and lightly decorated with old carpets or tapestries with one or two photos or paintings hanging between them.

Reds and browns are the principal colours. Poignant writings from the Koran or other Arabic philosophers are often written out in bold script and framed.

Moroccan decorations such as lamps, lanterns, mirrors, benches, vases, mosaic end tables, ottomans, rugs and ceramics can add that remarkable local flavour to the decor, setting off the solid timber or padded cloth furniture.

Pillows feature large in Moroccan interior and garden decor, but they also use settees and seats in the European fashion. Morocco is famous for its leather craft and leather is frequently used to cover chairs, sofas and footstools or poufes.

Scatter rugs are important for sitting on and they are taken out and beaten each day to keep them clean as Morocco is a hot, sandy and dusty country if you travel a couple of miles inland from the coast. Camels are still used for transport in rural areas and camel hair is turned into rugs, blankets and wall coverings.

Moroccans like tiles and mosaics and Arabic style tiles are quite distinctive if you want to use them in your bathroom and kitchen. If you want to dine in Moroccan style, they usually dine at a very low round table with the main dish in the centre from which everybody helps themselves, although in a family, some members will feed others too.

Following tradition and hygiene, you may only touch food with your right hand, although everyone will have washed both hands before coming to the table. Bread, rice and couscous feature highly in Moroccan food as does potatoes, carrots, lamb and chicken.Water is served during the meal and tea and coffee afterwards frequently with very sweet cakes sprinkled with icing sugar and syrup.

Individuals relax at home wearing long, loose-fitting garments and lounge on benches or on rugs on the floor surrounded by cushions. In the evening, lighting will be low provided by low wattage bulbs concealed behind red and brown stained glass or cloth. Candles, scented or not also feature a great deal in living rooms and bedrooms unless someone wants a stronger light to read by.

Candles in wall sconces are common methods to highlight special areas and light up corridors and some doorways. Frequently these sconces do not hold candles, but hold scented oil with a floating wick which is less expensive to leave burning between the hours or twilight and bed time.

How To Start Keeping Koi

Are you thinking about putting a koi carp pond in your garden? A koi fish pond is a great improvement to any garden. A garden pond is completely relaxing: watching the fish going about their every day lives is relaxing and listening to the sound of the water moving is relaxing as well. Koi carp are a good choice over some other fish because they grow quite large and breed freely even in captivity.

They are not that difficult to keep either. As with all fish ponds, you need to maintain the quality of the water, but that is not so much of a problem when you know what you are doing. Once you have got the water right, the rest will follow more or less automatically, although you will have to check it often.

Having said that, you ought to not merely hurry out in to the garden, dig a hole and fill it with fish. You need to buff up on the topic first, but there is so much information on koi on the market, that you will have no problem in that respect. There is also lots of information on the Internet.

The first thing to do is dig a hole for your pond, but it better not to have it consistently deep. It should be three or four feet deep at one end and a foot or so deep at the other. The koi will overwinter and sleep in the deeper water, but only the fry will feel comfortable in the shallow end. They will take refuge there to avoid being eaten by the larger fish. Like most fish, koi are cannibals.

Once your pond has been dug out, fill it with water and leave it for a week. Use this week to test your water features such as the water pumps, the filter and the fountain. If you are losing water strive to plug the leak. If you have to keep topping up the water level from the hosepipe, you will probably run into hardship with chlorine.

After a week, the chlorine in that tap water will have dissipated and any surplus oil in your pond apparatus will have been flushed out, so you can put aquatic plants in. Plant them in pots so that you can move them easily if necessary. You ought to also construct some underwater caves for the fish to conceal themselves in.

When you are happy that everything is working well and that the environment is stable (this is easier to do in larger ponds), you can think about buying some koi.

You have to decide why you would like to have koi. Do you want to show them and possibly earn some money? In that case you will have to start with expensive fish, but if you just want to sit and watch them, the cheapest ones are all right. You can probably ask a friend to give you a dozen anyway.

If you procure your fish in the breeding season, you will probably get a couple of gravid (pregnant) females anyway.

A word of warning: fish regulate their environment better than we do. A given amount of water will only hold a precise number of inches of fish. So, as an example, say that every ten gallons of water will be sufficient for ten inches of fish and you have 200 gallons that is 200 inches of fish, which is 20 x 10 inch fish or 40 x 5 inch fish. As the fish grow, they will die to maintain this ratio, so do not buy too many until you understand this ratio.

The Dreadful Effects Of Malaria

Malaria, a mosquito-borne sickness caused by mosquito bites that carry a parasite of the genus Plasmodium, is widely common in tropical and subtropical countries in Asia, South and Central America and the Middle East. Malaria is more widespread in areas with lots of rainfall and constant high temperatures that supply the ideal conditions for insects to thrive and multiply.

Malarial bouts begin with multiplication of the plasmodium virus in the red blood cells and could have long-lasting and even deadly consequences.

Malaria begins with headaches, fever and chills and could, in subsequent stages, also lead to coma. Malaria has three stages, the first stage starting with fever, shivering, joint pain, vomiting, anemia, hemoglobinuria, retinal damage and fits.

This could occur for four to six hours every alternate day, every three days or it might happen every four days. As the disease progresses into the second stage, one could experience sensations of heat and dryness, while the third stage could cause extreme fatigue and weakness.

It is however worth noting that the first indications happen around 10 to 15 days after the mosquito bite when it multiplies and bursts the red blood cells.

The effects of malaria especially in children must not be overlooked because a bite from this insect can lead to high intracranial pressure that becomes evident as unusual posture caused by acute brain damage.

Malaria caused by mosquito bites could lead to other significant consequences like cognitive impairment, widespread anaemia and neurological impairment with cerebral malaria. Cerebral malaria could result in retinal whitening that is the foremost distinguishing clinical sign of malaria.

Malaria caused by mosquitoes could in severe cases show up as an enlarged spleen, chronic headache, clots of blood in the brain, enlarged liver, low blood sugar and hemoglobinuria which could lead to renal failure.

Other significant side effects caused by this mosquito bite disease might be dehydration, liver or kidney failure and breathing issues caused by fluid in the lungs.

Rupture of the spleen might lead to internal bleeding with the spread of infection leading to inflammation of the meninges, or membranes, that enclose the brain and spinal cord.

The control of malaria begins with the usage of mosquito nets, the use of insect repellents and the spraying of insecticides in locations where mosquitoes could breed easily.

Home pest control starts with not having water standing around in buckets, tubs and the spraying of insecticides in drains which are ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Mosquito repellents could be chemical based or could also be in the form of herbal and biological pest control with the growing of mosquito repellent plants in the surroundings.

It is best to remember that one way of pest control lies in protecting oneself from mosquito bites by avoiding going out at dawn or dusk. It pays to have mosquito mesh on all the doors and windows at home. Avoiding wearing dark colors and opting for long sleeved shirts and long trousers would also help.

Pest control includes using repellents like creams, lotions and electronic devices. It is best to kill mosquitoes by spraying insecticides, but this ought to be done some time before entering the room. Last but not least, preventing mosquito bites is the most effective pest control each time.

Eating Insects For Survival And Pleasure

In the West, not many individuals consume insects for pleasure, but that is fairly unusual if you consider the number of people and the number of nations in the world that do. In Asia, numerous people consume insects on a weekly or even daily basis. However, you may one day be happy that you read about eating insects, if you are stranded somewhere a long way from any other supply of food.

For instance, lots of army personnel are taught how to eat worms and insects as part of their routine training course as part of their survival training. Insects are abundant and are simple to catch or trap, they are also a richer source of protein than steak and easier to cook and far less risky to eat raw than meat from mammals, fish or birds.

Insects can provide more than three times the amount of protein weight for weight than any meat or fish. They are also free, you just have to know where to look or how to bait them. However, you ought to not consume just any insect that you can get your hands on. There a few easy basic guidelines.

Do not consume anything that can bite or sting you back. Not because this is perilous to you, but because creatures like bees, wasps and some ants simply do not taste pleasant because of the poisons they make for their stings. A notable exception to this rule is the scorpion. Many people find roast scorpion a delicacy.

You could hone this rule to merely include brightly coloured, stinging insects – especially ones with yellow colouring. Furry insects are not tasty either, particularly caterpillars. Flying insects in general, like flies, mosquitoes, blue bottles and the like, should be avoided as well.

Big beetles (with the exception of cockroaches), grass hoppers, locusts, crickets and scorpions are the best. So are worms, maggots and most other larvae of that type like bee, wasp and hornet larvae. Termites and non-stinging ants are also edible.

Most individuals fry the insects in oil after taking off the wings (like with flying termites or ants). However, if you are stuck in the wild, you might not have any oil with you. Luckily, that is not too much of a problem if you cook the insects fairly slowly, because most of them have enough of their own body fat to be fried in.

If you find that eating your first meal of insects is just too much to stomach, try mashing them in with some boiled root vegetables or wrap them in leaves. Boiled nettle leaves are very healthy and young dandelion leaves can be eaten raw.

If you are not sure how far to cook your insects, worms and larvae, here are a few pointers from Asia. Fry big beetles, termites and scorpions until they are hard on the outside but with a small, slightly soft centre. Fry worms, crickets, grass hoppers and the like until they are hard and crisp and boil grubs and bee, wasp and hornet larvae for merely a couple of seconds.

The majority of Westerners that visit Thailand turn their noses up at eating insects, but after six years of living here, I have never heard any of those who tasted them say that they were awful. In fact, most said that they were surprisingly tasty, but then why else would so many individuals like them?

Tips For Buying Garden Furniture On Line

Purchasing garden furniture on line is not the perfect solution as it both solves and presents some difficulties if it is used indiscriminately. For example, if you find it difficult to get around the shops and garden centres, the Internet will permit you to visit hundreds of places to compare styles and prices, but you will not have had sight of your furniture and it might be costly to return it.

Therefore there are a few things to watch out for if you want to buy garden furniture on line. Some of these suggestions will apply to other items as well especially heavy items.

Be wary of shipping charges because some companies will strive to hide the fact that they can be horrendous. If delivery charges are an extra, do not forget to add these fees on to the cost of the garden furniture before you evaluate prices. Some businesses will talk some claptrap about an order processing fee in an effort to mask their delivery fees. These companies are being dishonest and you should avoid them like the plague.

Try to switch off to the words ‘discount’ and ‘sale price’ until you have added up all the costs and you have compared this total with the total cost of a comparable item. Similarly, be very suspicious of comparisons between list price and sale price. Manufacturers often ‘recommend’ a high list price purposely so that the retailer can offer a discount. It is very common practice, but designed to deceive.

Beware of ‘price snobbery’. If you see two retailers selling exactly the same items of garden furniture but at widely different prices, do not be automatically convinced that the cheaper one must be inferior. Instead, look around the cheap web site for extra costs. Do not forget that most retailers buy from the same manufacturers.

Do not trust any firm that says that they will not be beaten on price because they are the cheapest on the Internet or that they will undercut anyone you can prove is cheaper. They have no proof that they are the cheapest and if you prove that they are not they will decrease their price only to you because you caught them in their lie. These people are liars.

Companies that make a big issue out of fast service are not really giving you anything. Every company likes a fast turn-around because they can bank the check earlier and the warranty finishes sooner as well. You will find out how good their service is if you have difficulties. Empty promises and blowing one;s own trumpet mean nothing. Self praise is no praise.

You can check up on the firm’s customer service record by typing the company’s name, city of business and the word ‘complaints’ or ‘problems’ into Google. You will soon be able to determine for yourself whether you are dealing with a reputable firm or not. Purchasing garden furniture on line is the same as buying anything else expensive on line: it is up to the buyer to beware before parting with his money because it might be hard to get it back if there is a difficulty.

The Four Stages In The Life Of The Mosquito

Mosquitoes, those tiny insects that make us uncomfortable, could also lay us open to malaria, dengue and chikungunya. They live in damp areas and reproduce in water.

The life cycle of this bug begins in holes filled with water, tide water pools in salt marshes, sewage effluent ponds, irrigated pastures and rain water ponds.

The four most important species of mosquitoes, namely Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, and Culiseta, each have their own unique environmental requirements and this helps us to identify a particular species too.

It is a good idea to remember that all mosquitoes have four distinctive phases, namely the egg, larva, pupa and adult stages, in their life cycle. The eggs are laid in water or on damp surfaces and float on them. In addition, species like Culex and Culiseta lay eggs of 100 or more that are found stuck to each other in the fashion of a raft.

However, Anopheles mosquitoes lay their eggs on water and Aedes are known to lay their eggs usually on damp soil. The eggs take two days to hatch out and metamorphose into the larval stage.

The mosquito larvae, known popularly as wrigglers or wigglers, live in water for a period of a week or two depending on the temperature of the water. The larvae swim frequently to the surface of the water to take in oxygen with the aid of siphon tunes.

However, species like the Anopheles have no such mechanism and generally breathe by lying flat on the water. It is interesting to note that mosquito larvae shed their skin four times and after the fourth stage they metamorphose into pupae.

Mosquito pupae, commonly known as “tumblers”, live in water for from one to four days depending mostly on the species and temperature. In this phase, called the resting and non-eating stage in the life cycle, the insect can be observed lying on the surface of water.

In this phase it breathes through its two breathing tubes called trumpets. This is the important and last stage before the mosquito changes into an adult and begins spreading infection. Once the stage is over, the pupa opens and the adult emerges.

Once the adult mosquito is formed, it sits on the surface of the water waiting for its body to dry out and harden. After a time, the mosquito is able to spread its wings and fly. It is interesting to remember that adult female mosquitoes are more aggressive than the males that feed only on the nectar of flowers.

Aedes female mosquitoes are known for their sore and persistent bites especially during the daytime and they attack mostly humans. The Culex specie resembles Aedes, However they are known to strike after dusk and have a preference for domestic and wild birds. They transmit encephalitis or sleeping sickness.

The Culiseta species of mosquito is a moderately aggressive biter that attacks during the evening hours and in the shade. Anopheles mosquitoes are known for spreading malaria in humans.

Lastly, it is useful to understand that most female mosquitoes have to feed on an animal before they can produce eggs, with some dying before laying viable eggs.

In addition, some species live near their breeding place while others fly as far as 100 miles from their breeding spot. Male mosquitoes live a shorter life than female mosquitoes.

Owen Jones publishes pieces on various subjects, but is now concerned with Hand Held Insect Killer devices and static units at Electronic Insect Killers.

How To Choose Furniture

If you have recently moved home or have just finished redecorating, you may be thinking that it is time to buy some new furniture too. However, new furniture can make a big difference to the feel of your home and it is not cheap, so it is best to do a bit of homework on how to choose furniture before you dive in and commit yourself to spending a small fortune.

Some people prefer to live in the recently decorated apartment or house for a while to get a feel for what will suit the ambiance first. However, sooner or later, you will just have to bite the bullet and start traipsing around the malls and the Internet. Catalogues and brochures are a decent starting place and a fund of free ideas. Next come the monthly ‘Home’ magazines. Show rooms in the big stores and on the Internet can generate ideas as well.

Are you attracted to timber? Many people are and it has become an increasingly rare and therefore valuable resource, especially the hardwoods and even more particularly the foreign hardwoods like teak and mahogany.

Some home-grown hardwoods are just as dear, think of walnut and then you just have the ordinarily expensive ones like cherry, oak, cedar, maple and willow. Less expensive, although still not cheap are pine and birch.

If you like the gorgeous dark colour of mahogany but cannot afford it, you could always stain a cheaper timber the colour of mahogany. It is not difficult and you can achieve very satisfactory results. One tip that all interior designers give though, is not to have different colour timbers in the same room.

You can mix different types of timber, but they should all be near enough the same colour. If you have different colours either move some pieces of furniture to a different room or stain the lighter ones to match the darker ones. The other way around does not work, you cannot stain something lighter.

If you do not want to commit yourself to going into debt to get all you new furniture at once (and who can blame you), it is a good idea to buy the one article of furniture you see somewhere that you really, really like. Say a beautiful table or cabinet or suite of chairs. There is no necessity to be too practical here as you probably already have something to sit on, eat off, put things in and stand the TV on.

The point is that you are no longer happy with the items of furniture that you have and want to change them. Buy your lovely thing and throw something out. Keep your eyes open for the next lovely thing that matches your first lovely thing and as soon as you have the money, buy it and throw something else out. You will have a patchwork quilt of a house for a while but if you tackle the house room by room, you will get there soon enough.

Pool Safety Fences: A Buyer’s Guide

If you have had a swimming pool for some time or if you are thinking of getting one – either an above-ground or an in-ground swimming pool – you must check to see whether your district requires you to take any safety precautions. For instance, some states in America require the erection of a swimming pool safety fence by law, others are about to introduce such a law and others are thinking about calling for a pool alarm too.

However, it is not all one-sided. There are also benefits to the owner of the pool of installing a pool safety fence. The foremost benefit of such a fence is safety. If you have young children or grand-children, you do not always have the time to supervise them playing in the pool, so a fence is a way of allowing the kids to play in the garden while excluding them from the dangerous pool.

Kids can be scallywags, all adults know that even if some parents think that their own children are not, you can bet your bottom dollar that someone else thinks they are. Our children know that they have to behave in front of us, but what happens while they know that we are not looking? You know, you were a kid yourself once. I climbed the fence into the municipal outdoor pool more than once when I was a teenager and usually after a few beers.

The fact is that if you have an unprotected pool, there is a good chance that the local kids will use it when you are away and these days that means negligence on behalf of the pool owner. Whether that is right or wrong, it is like that and if someone should drown in your pool, you would be in big trouble, unless you could prove that your took reasonable measures to prevent unauthorized access to your pool.

A security pool fence is just about the cheapest way of doing this, although fences can be easily scaled as I full-well know. However, having a fence shows that you have considered the problem and that you have tried to deter intruders.

There are quite a number of acceptable styles of pool fencing but it may vary from district to district, so it is first worth checking whether there are any local minimum standards in force in your region. Other than that, there are choices of wire, timber and steel. Wire can include mesh fences as well.

Wood almost certainly looks the best and gives the most options. If you want total privacy, you can have a full fence or if you would like to be able to see out, you could go for hit-and-miss vertical boarding. I do not like mesh, personally. I have painted tens of miles of fencing in my time and there always seems to be litter caught in the mesh. Iron railings are nice too, but pretty costly.

Whichever sort of fence you go for, grow a continuous wall of the prickliest, thorniest bushes you can find about the base of it. Pyracanthas are good and the berries attract birds – wild birds, that is. Let them grow to three or four feet high and they will deter drunks and afford the ladies some privacy while lying around the pool.

Choosing Your Patio Garden Furniture

Once you have finished making your patio, your deck or your lawn, you will unquestionably start thinking about how you can enjoy more time out of doors. Therefore, you will need some garden furniture. Many shops stock garden furniture. You can try home improvement centres, large department stores and garden centres. There are also businesses on line that will deliver. The hard job is picking your garden furniture.

There is a very broad choice of designs of garden furniture – a style to suit every person and complement every garden. So, before rushing down to the garden centre, it is worth considering for a while what you would like to accomplish with your open-air seating area. Do you want a theme? Do you want to entertain or dine there? Or do you just want to sit peacefully, take pleasure in your garden and read a magazine?

Indeed, the answer may well be a combination of all those variables. If you simply want to sit there with a drink and a book, you may be satisfied to just buy a couple of chairs and a small table, but if you want to have guests or take family meals outside, you may prefer a more substantial table. A large oak table would be quite costly, but it would look magnificent and last for a decade or more.

If you choose a table, you will have to have chairs to match, but do you want loungers as well? They could be of plastic and kept in the shed until wanted.

You will probably need some form of shade. This can be given by folding, even removable umbrellas or by overhanging trees or shrubs. Wisteria or clematis can do the job too and cost you almost nothing.

Do you intend cooking in this space? If you do, what and how? Do you fancy a barbecue pit or a proper hob and oven? A lot of people in regions where the climate permits are doing a great deal of cooking outside in a carbon copy of an indoor kitchen, but without all the walls.. If you plan the outdoor kitchen carefully, you will be able to use it in the rain too. I find it lovely not to have kitchen smells in the house and cooking out of doors is a good experience as well.

If it gets nippy in the evenings then you can think about buying some patio heaters. They are not expensive to buy or to run and one standard patio heater can keep quite a group of people warm. (By the word ‘standard’ here, I mean upright, like a lamp post).

Lighting is the last large consideration in the list when choosing garden furniture. There are actually two kinds of garden lighting to mull over: lighting to see by and lighting to lure insects away. Again, you could use standard lamps to light up your patio. They shine their light far enough so that you can still look at your garden after dark or you could have individual wall light on dimmers.

The one light I would definitely have is a mosquito lantern. Hang this away from where you sit, because they do attract insects to them which they then electrocute with a pleasing zap.

Styles Of Garden Furniture

If you want to get some new garden furniture, the first thing to do is think about the styles of garden furniture that would suit your garden and your requirements. If you already have an idea of what you would like, you are already half way there, otherwise you will have to do some research on the different styles of garden furniture

This research can be done on line quite easily by typing ‘garden furniture’ into Google, but if you would prefer more information on the furniture, you could get a few magazines on gardening and landscaping. If you rather a more hands-on approach, you can go around the home improvement stores and the garden centres.

In fact, you will have to go to the shops sooner or later anyway unless you intend buying on line too. I personally like to do some exploration on the Internet first and then use the knowledge that I gleaned from there to make informed decisions in the shop. I do not quite trust the photographs. I want to see and touch the garden furniture and check the joints and finish.

Once you get to the garden centre, you will come across different styles of garden furniture including: farmhouse or rustic, contemporary or modern, resort or poolside and these can be made from hardwood, softwood, plastic or metal.

Hardwood is by far the most popular material for garden furniture and most people prefer the farmhouse style, although there are some fantastic modern styles too.

No matter which style you prefer or what it is manufactured of the number one best piece of advice is to get the best quality that you can afford. This is true of most items you can buy, but I think that it is especially true of garden furniture because it will have a very hard life. Just imagine it: snow, rain, heat; temperatures varying from -5c to + 35c and varying humidity.

Cheap plastic cannot erect with those circumstances. I used to buy cheap plastic and needed to replace it every eighteen months. Then I bought expensive plastic and I still have some of that but in essence it only lasted three years. I have seen metal garden furniture and it always rusts, even if it is plastic coated, enamelled or painted. Softwood lasts well, but it will rot after approximately five years even if it is quite well taken care of.

The only garden furniture that I have ever had or seen at friends’ houses that lasts and looks good all that time is hardwood. There is a broad selection of hardwoods. There are native hardwoods like oak, cherry, walnut, maple and beech and foreign hardwoods like mahogany and teak. These hardwoods can also be stained to practically any colour although most people prefer the natural look.

Hardwood garden furniture is easy to maintain as well: just rub it over with linseed oil once or twice a year. If you carry out this simple maintenance procedure the timber will not dry out and it will endure the elements for twenty years or more ensuring that you get maximum value for money from this, the finest of all the styles of garden furniture.

Why You Should Install A Pool Alarm

Do you own a swimming pool or are you thinking of having one fitted? If so, then it is recommended that you have a pool alarm fitted too. You could be wondering if you really need such an alarm, but all will be revealed in the rest of this piece. A pool alarm can be incorporated into your present burglar alarm system, if it is flexible enough.

One of the reasons for installing a pool alarm is that it may be required by law, national or local. Numerous kids have been drowned skinny dipping in a neighbour’s pool when they are away on vacation.

Some local authorities insist on putting up fences, but they are basically ineffectual, so the move is towards pool alarms. This does not really have to be costly because most people who can afford a pool will have a home alarm system already.

If your local authority does not have requirements for alarms already, it might be worth checking out what legislation is in the pipeline. Most of the contemporary pool alarms are activated whilst there is a disturbance at water level, so they are good for deterring night-time aquatic intruders.

However, of course does not merely warn about interlopers, sometimes people fall into the pool because they are drunk. The alarm will allow you to rescue them. It will also warn about children falling into the pond, which is a continuous source of anxiety for parents with pools.

Because a lot of pool owners are no longer young and their children are grown up, they frequently wonder why they need to secure their pool. Well, one good reason, besides saving lives, is that it can reduce your insurance premium. To be blunt, it shows that you are doing your best and so reduces your legal responsibility.

Pool safety devices are easy to install, particularly if you already have a warning device, scanners and siren installed on your property. For most people who can afford a pool, the price of an alarm is off-set against the peace of mind that it will deliver is fairly negligible.

While you go searching for a pool alarm, there are lots of places for you to look, but the best place to try first of all is the supplier of your existing home security system. This is because they will be the best people to be able to integrate the two systems so that you do not have two sets of sirens, two sets of detectors and two sets of everything else.

Once you have had a pool alarm installed, you have one further moral obligation and that is to make sure that it works. This is easy. Set your alarm and jump into the water. Reset the alarm and walk up to your pool. In both circumstances, the pool alarm should have been triggered.

You should check your alarm every month or two in conjunction with checking your existing home security system. This is a necessary precautionary step, because you cannot expect items to keep working for years without requiring some maintenance.

Schools For Woodworking

Wood is by far the most popular material in the world for home items such as chairs, benches, doors, windows, cabinets, tables, wardrobes and jewellery boxes. Wood is still extensively used to make houses in many countries and not even only poor countries either. So it follows that woodworking is one of the most sought after skills in the world as well.

Even though there is always a high demand for items made from wood, there is always a shortage of good wood workers, carpenters and cabinet makers. This makes woodworking in any of its various forms a good trade to enter. In the past, there were shuttering carpenters, joiners, carpenters, ships’ carpenters, furniture makers, cabinet makers and wood workshop workers. These various varieties have merged to a certain extent.

So, what do you do if you want to go into the profession? Well, the traditional route was to become an apprentice to a tradesman, but that practice largely died out in the 1970′s and 1980′s. The route now is more likely to be through school and technical college, coupled with short term placements in industry until the ‘apprentice’ has passed his or, more and more often nowadays, her, final exams.

There is a lot of competition for jobs in the construction industry in the West at the moment, so credentials are pretty indispensable, although any foreman carpenter knows within fifteen minutes of watching someone working how skilled that person is. They can usually tell just by glancing in their tool bag in fact.

At woodworking school, besides being taught how to handle, cut and shape wood, the student will also be taught other subjects such as relevant mathematics, how to identify different timbers, woodworking tools and equipment, how to read woodworking plans and architectural drawings, how to finish wood, such as polishing and varnishing and health and safety.

At woodworking school the student is introduced to the many facets and niche trades of woodworking and it is hoped that the student will show a preference or even an aptitude for one niche over another. This permits the teacher to steer the student down the specific route relevant to that niche and find the student placements within industry relevant to the student’s particular interests.

From this point on, the woodworking class may start to be segmented so that each segment can specialize in its own particular niche. This may not happen until the second or third year of a three or four year course. At this juncture it is worth mentioning that the student should go as far as possible down the path to his or her niche as he/she can.

This is because, on a building site, it is generally recognized that the carpenter is in the most highly educated tradesman on site. It is for this reason that most general foremen are carpenters. Under the general foreman, there may be a foreman bricklayer, a foreman painter et cetera, but the foreman of these foremen is often a carpenter.

Therefore, other abilities will have to be honed too. Once the student has left school and found employment, it is worth still going to night classes or asking the boss if there is a day release scheme to continue education. If being foreman is an objective, then you will need a good command of language in order to liaise with customers, fellow workers and management.

You will require people skills too and an ability to read plans and drawings and understand the financial aspects of a job. You will also have to be able to handle rude clients and grumpy bosses and learn what you can and what you cannot do to correct late or lazy workers.

They may teach some of the theory of these subjects in woodworking school, but not as much as you will learn on site. Once you have learned the essentials of how a real site works, then you can go back to night school to learn the finer points. In woodworking, as in all professions, you never know enough so you must always keep learning.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with a favourite subject, wine rack plans. If you are interested in Desk Woodworking Plans, please click through to our site, where we have 14,000 wood working plans.

Swimming Pool Accessories

Millions of people love to swim in their gardens about the world. Swimming and playing in the water is immense fun, even if you have to go to a pond, pool, a river or the sea to do it. in order to make full use of a garden pool, you really have to live in a place where the weather is warm. The owner also needs to have some money as pool maintenance charges are high.

Therefore, when people have gone to the trouble of having a garden pool installed, they also like to have the pool used as frequently or as much as possible. You can encourage your friends and family to use the pool more often by making it more fun and more comfortable to do so. Pool accessories or swimming accessories are a means of achieving this.

People like to be in the water, so you could make it easy for them by using poolside furniture that will float while supporting an adult. There are various objects like floating chairs, floating tables and plastic inflatable lidos that will keep you and your guests in contact with the water. Good floating furniture will also support people out of the water, cheap stuff will not.

If you like the concept of floating in your pool whilst sitting on a seat reading a book, this sort of furniture is for you. Many of these chairs have an in-built glass holder and float so that your waist is at the water line, although this just depends on the chair and the person sitting in it.

Then there are floating sun loungers which do roughly the same thing as a floating chair, except they tend to keep your whole body out of the water so that you can get an even sun tan. Inflatable lidos or rafts are similar items, although the inflatable lido or camp bed is a very cheap item compared with the more solid floating seats and loungers.

Other items that you could use to raise the enjoyment of your garden pool are aquatic games. You could string up a water polo net or a water volley ball net in order to get people moving. Beach balls are another good idea for encouraging play in the pool. If you are on your own, you could just float around in an inflated truck tyre. They are very comfortable and very cheap.

If you are dead set on relaxation at your pool, you could build a poolside bar. The bar stools could be in the water, if your pool is large enough, otherwise you could incorporate the pool bar into a breakfast bar where you can prepare and eat light meals. Weighty meals are not good for swimmers anyway.

Pool accessories or swimming accessories will intensify your enjoyment of your pool and make your friends and family wait for you next invitation to come over for a swim impatiently. Most of these devices do not have to be costly either.

Building A Backyard Fish Pond

A backyard fish pond will enhance the beauty of your garden, there is no question about that. A backyard fish pond will add a focal point to a messy garden and will make a beautiful backyard or garden even more interesting. There is something pleasant about the gurgling and splashing of fresh water.

However, in spite of the massive upside of having a backyard fish pond, there is also the question of maintenance. This is not an arduous task, but it is on-going and does need to be carried out on a methodical basis.

Everybody enjoys a backyard fish pond. If you already have one, you can bear witness to the fact that guests, friends and family like to spend time sitting around the edge of your pond watching the fish go about their lazy lifestyles and listening to the sound or running and splashing water. It seems to fascinate humans and it is therapeutic.

If you do not already own a pond, but want one, the first step is to choose where to locate it. A few suggestions here:

1] do not site it at a low point in the garden otherwise it might flood when it rains and your fish might swim away. 2] try not to put it under a tree or you will spend the rest of your life dredging foliage out of the water 3] do try to put your backyard fish pond where it will be at least in partial shade at midday

Once you have the prime site, you need to think about size and shape. The most popular formats are: round, square, oval and kidney shaped. The depth of the water is also significant if you live in an area that is subject to freezing. Thirty to forty-five inches is enough in most instances, but it would be worth asking neighbours or the local pet shop for advice.

Once your pond is in place, you can install your equipment. You will need a pump to suck the debris out of the water and send it to the pond filter. However, this pump will allow plant debris to pass through it, so if you want a fountain, you will almost certainly need another pump, otherwise the fountain’s jets will become blocked by dead vegetation.

If this all seems a bit much, you can buy a pond kit which contains all the bits and pieces you will require to set up a backyard fish pond. One tip here: if you get solar-powered equipment, it will save on electrician’s fees and you will never have an electricity bill for your backyard fish pond.

After installing the pumps, filter and fountain, you can fill the pond up with water and turn the equipment on. The water is inappropriate for fish at the moment, so just let the equipment run in and the water mature. This will require a week for the water. Meanwhile, choose your fish and plants and construct any hidey-holes you want to put in for your fish.

When the week is over, you can add your plants and populate your backyard fish pond with fish.

Popular Water Events For The Backyard

When it grows hot, most individuals head out the door. A lot go to a public pool, a river, lake or the beach, but others would prefer to stay in their own backyard. Some people are lucky enough to have a pool in their back garden, but not everybody has the space or the money. However, the majority of people like being wet in order to cool down.

In this article, we will look at a few of the things that you do can in the backyard involving water to help you remain cool. The first one is the one we have already alluded to and the one home improvement that almost everyone would have if they could. A pool. People love the thought of having a backyard pool.

If your budget cannot stretch to a substantial in ground pool, you could buy a smaller above-ground pool. These above-ground pools are a lot cheaper, and while not large enough to swim in, they can certainly get thought of as large plunge pools. Half a dozen people can have a lot of fun in one of these pools.

If this is not feasible, what about a Jacuzzi or a hot tub? There is a great deal of flexibility in hot tubs these days. You can have them built into all types of nooks and crannies in the garden.

You can also get a hot tub of any size you want: two, foru, six, eight people and each person with a moulded chair with its own hydrotherapeutic directional water jets, so that you can play the jets on any areas of your body that you want.

If this is out of the question as well, what of a few garden water sprinklers? You could have plastic waterproof garden furniture and sit under the sprinklers simulating rain. This is an easy and very cheap way of cooling off when it is very warm.

You could hand everybody in your garden a water pistol to squirt everybody with. This might sound a little juvenile but kids and a lot of adults really enjoy it. Similar to this, you could fill a few dozen balloons up with water and use them for throwing at each other like having your own paint ball competition without getting dirty.

Water games are immense fun and a decent manner of staying cool whilst the sun is beating down in the summer. Just one word of warning – sunburn. Water will cool you down and you may not notice that you are burning. Make certain that everybody applies waterproof suntan lotion of a factor that is applicable to the level of sunshine in your area.

Why You Should Use Contemporary Fine Art In Your Hotel Decor

Businesses of all kinds have come to realize that contemporary fine art makes great, yet affordable decor and the lighting necessary to illuminate them is useful for lighting corridors too. Hospitals, hotels, airports, restaurants and bars are jumping on the band wagon as well.

There are all kinds of paintings and objets d’art, so many in fact that you will always be able to find something to fit in with whichever style of decor that you have. You can use contemporary fine art to give bare walls an interest and to keep people interested while they are waiting for something to happen.

For example, contemporary fine art displayed in a restaurant will prevent diners from becoming bored while they are waiting for their order. Contemporary fine art in a bar will give solitary travellers something to do while they are passing an hour or two in your establishment. Likewise for hospital patients, looking at contemporary fine art might help relieve anxiety and stress.

Hotels and Guest Houses.

When people come to check in, you want to offer a warm, yet stylish appearance to them. Many hotel guests travel alone and spend time sitting in the lobby to pass their evenings or weekends. An interesting display of contemporary fine art will keep them interested for hours.

Put your paintings or and objets d’art at regular intervals around the walls, but do not crowd a wall. You should pick a warm, yet neutral colour for the wall’s emulsion. Lighting is also very important. Up lighting, down lighting or back lighting are common methods of illuminating pieces of art work, but you can also use spotlights to highlight something out of the ordinary.

The lobby can also contain a few plants and a coffee table or two with an interesting wrought iron lamp on each. A matching lamp shade helps to generate a warm, co-ordinated effect.

You should also put some contemporary fine art in the guest rooms, because, once again, many travellers are alone and have to spend hours sitting in their rooms alone. If you are stuck for a theme, think about your location. Is it near the sea or is the town famous for something? Does it have a well-known historical association? Once you have your theme, you will surely find pieces of contemporary fine art to decorate it with.

Try to put yourself in the shoes of the average person who comes to stay or eat at your establishment. Is he there for business or pleasure? If it’s pleasure do families come or is it largely singles? Whatever the type of hotel, guest house, restaurant or pub, you will find a theme and the rest will follow because there is so much choice of contemporary fine art.

Consistency is a good thing when you are decorating a hotel or guest house. Try to keep everything ‘on topic’. The colours, the furnishings, the plants, the contemporary fine art – the lighting should be subtle and the whole decor must be in the same theme, if it is to be wildly successful.

How To Buy Cheap Garden Furniture

If you like being in your garden and want a set of garden furniture in order to take advantage of the beautiful summer weather, it can be rather depressing when you go out to look at the cost of garden furniture, particularly if you are on a budget. And who is not on a budget these days? However, there is a way to obtain cheap garden furniture and still end up with something that you can be proud of.

I would like you to be very careful about lies. I have just finished reading an advert offering an ‘authentic teak (garden furniture) set’ that normally sells for about $4,500 for $29.97! Anybody who believes this kind of rubbish is a sad case indeed. Later on in the article, they admit that the wood is not teak, but is ‘constructed of hardwoods similar to teak’.

In fact, I do not believe that either. The writer has already told one lie and so is obviously deceitful. If ever you find a hole in someone’s advertising you ought to look elsewhere, especially on the Internet and particularly if the shop is not in your town so that you cannot go and visit it.

Regrettably, there are lots of liars on the Internet and they are giving the honest merchants a bad reputation. Many of them live in poor countries that have little or no Internet or business regulation. Places like Eastern Europe, China, Africa, South America and South-Eastern Asia.

If the standard of English in the advertisement is poor, go elsewhere. It is a shame for the honest person who does not speak English well, but far safer for you. Another check would be to send the owner an email.

If they do not reply, give them a wide birth. If they do reply, check their Internet Provider’s (IP) address. The IP address is a group of four numbers and the first group gives the country of origin of the email.

Be very careful of offers that seem to be too good to be true. Rich people purchase teak patio furniture at $4,500. Why do they pay that much? Because the best teak furniture costs that much. How can rich people afford that much? Because they have good jobs. How do they get decent jobs? Because they are not stupid. If you could buy genuine teak furniture for $29.97, they would have it as well.

So, if you can only afford to get cheap garden furniture, buy the best quality plastic furniture that you can find and do not get sucked in by these thieves that are trying to trick you that you can have a top of the market hardwood garden furniture set for $30. You cannot; and never will be able to; and probably never have been able to either.

Kitchen Design And Lighting Ideas

If you have just moved into a new, old house, one of the first things that you will probably want to do is refurbish or remodel the kitchen, especially if you like cooking or spending a lot of time in the kitchen. If you use a kitchen a great deal, you will probably already have a good idea of what you would like the kitchen to look like in the end.

One of the first decisions to make is whether you are going to do it yourself or oversee it yourself. There is a lot of work in a kitchen refurb and I have seen amateurs spend years, literally years, doing what a builder could have completed in weeks. This always leads to family tensions. Once that I know of, it even led to divorce. It seems that everybody wants to brag that they are having refurbishments done, but no one actually wants to go through the aggravation of having it actually done.

If you are not completely sure what you want your kitchen to look like, it is a good suggestion to visit show kitchens in home improvement stores and even pick up brochures there to study at home. You could also buy a few magazines and surf the Internet for suggestions.

Once you see a few examples that you like, be sure to cut out the pages and print off the image files after downloading them. This way you can build up a dossier of the things that you would like to integrate into your new kitchen..

Once you are pleased that you have all the components you like, you have to collate them. This does not have to be to scale or exact, but just as good as you can do with what you have. Take a large sheet of paper, say A3, and draw in your kitchen’s windows and doors.

Then cut out the pictures of the items you want from the magazines and brochures and stick them in place. If you think that this is not feasible, draw them in and label them unmistakably so that you can refer back to your picture file.

You need not stop at one drawing, you can play about with it. If you cut the pictures out, but do not stick them down, you can move them around until you are contented. You may also want to get the opinions of other members of the family and have a brain storming session

When you have finished, decide how you are going to illuminate the kitchen. Do you want a pendant light over the table? Do you want spots pointing at the cooker and the sink? Do you want concealed down-lighting to shine on the work surface? How are you going to see what you are doing? It is a very important question. Wall lights are good for ambient lighting.

In conclusion, you have to choose a colour scheme and you are almost ready to start, unless you are using a contractor and then you will have to select one first, but that will make up the contents of another article.

Landscaping Your Garden

Landscaping techniques permit the gardener to transform a simple backyard into a lovely garden. There are many routes to having a stunning garden, because there are many types to choose from and there are different tastes too. Chaque un a son gout. Some styles of garden require a great deal of looking after and others less so, but even a slabbed or concrete backyard needs some maintenance.

The best method of going about making something beautiful out of your backyard is planning and perhaps the easiest way of planning is to create a plan or a drawing of your garden.

If you choose this course, the first thing you will have to do is get some graph paper and plot the exact dimensions and form of your garden onto it, with as large a scale as will fit on the sheet of graph paper.

After you have completed that, mark in unmovable items like a brick shed, a drain or septic tank, a fish pond and doorways et cetera. Then you should photocopy it, maybe five or ten times. This is so that you can make mistakes, change your mind or even permit everybody in the household to make their own design from their own investigations and imagination.

If you think that this is outside your skills, you are almost certainly wrong. It really is not hard, children draw on graph paper all the time in maths lessons. Nevertheless, if you do not want to do it this way, then you will need to rely on plans cut out of magazines.

So, collect all your ideas from magazines and put them in a file. Likewise, if you are making a plan on paper, collect your ideas in a folder, but also mark them on your graph paper.

Set yourself or your team a deadline of say, a two weeks or a month, but you do need to do the majority of your work in the spring or the summer, when the weather is warm. On the appointed day, get together and amalgamate all your plans into one.

Put all the superfluous material aside and forget about it. Do not over complicate the situation by having all the designs in the active file. Now you are ready to go to work and implement the plans.

The choice is now whether you do the work yourself or whether you get a builder in. A builder will have experience, and so will be able to get the work done quickly. They will also be able to provide sensible suggestions, if what you want to accomplish is difficult. The other side of the coin is that it is a great deal more expensive.

If you choose to do it yourself, you might find it a good idea to divide your plan into sections. It could be done in quarters of the garden at a time, if that is feasible, or you could do all the groundwork first, followed by the brick and blockwork, then the pond etc. Depending on your diagram. The only thing that really has to be done last is the planting of the plants

Ideas For Inside And Outdoor Kitchens

Is your kitchen a dreary and uninteresting area to work in? It does not need to be like that, you can transform it fairly easily either yourself or by hiring contractors to do it for you. The trick is to know what you desire before you take a sledge hammer to your existing kitchen.

So, before you go about destroying what you already have, go about gathering ideas for replacement. You can get great ideas from the home restoration TV programmes, from home design journals, by looking at friends’ kitchens and by reading my suggestions below.

Maybe the best place to start is to think about how to reveal your own personal style. This could be a broad trend like farmhouse, Tuscan, Mexican, modern, or it could be a little bit of many styles to make up your own. However, do not forget that there is a lot of scope to express your own individuality even if you choose a broad style.

One trap to avoid is attempting to get all the latest gadgets from a broad style. For example, if you follow the modern broad trend to its logical end, your kitchen will look like a cold, clinical hotel or hospital kitchen full of stainless steel. If you like all that kind of equipment , then okay, but it is uncomfortable for a family to feel at home in.

If money is tight, you could just repaint the cabinets a different colour and replace the handles. That will make a colossal difference. Changing the background lighting is another pretty cheap way of varying the style of your kitchen. Put subtle lighting under the wall units and if you already have those, try fixing some spot lights to the ceiling and if you already have those, try adding some wall sconces for candles.

If you have beautiful pots and pans or want to get a set, why not show them off by fixing a rack to the wall from which to hang your pots and pans? it adds a very interesting effect to any kitchen.

You can also make a huge difference to the kitchen (or any room for that matter) by changing the flooring. Solid timber is stunning, but if you cannot afford that, you could try veneered flooring or stone, if the floor will take the weight. It is a good idea to endeavor to use the kitchen flooring to reinforce the broad image of your kitchen’s new style.

If you do not already have one, think about creating an outdoor kitchen for use whilst the weather permits. An outdoor kitchen really frees up a lot of room and ‘usage’. People flow to the outdoor kitchen when the weather is fine and your indoor living space suddenly seems less chaotic.

Last, but not least, the kitchen table. Just changing the style or shape of your kitchen table will have a big influence on the general look of your kitchen. Go from timber to glass or from square to round.

The Benefits Of Remodeling Your Kitchen

If your kitchen is searching a bit tired and jaded, you might be thinking about remodeling it. This is not a task to be taken lightly, so the more consideration you can give it the better. Refurbishing a kitchen can take a long time, which means lots of inconvenience and a it can cost a lot of money.

That is if you decide to do it yourself. If you choose to get a professional in, the work will not take as long, but it will cost even more money, often a lot more money. However, if you want to do it yourself to save on the contractor’s wages, you can minimize the inconvenience caused by planning the work down to the smallest detail so that you will always have water and at least minimal cooking facilities.

The first key benefit to remodeling your kitchen is the increase in the value of your house. It is the venture that adds the second most value to a home after an extension. However, the amount of additional value depends on the quality of the handiwork and the quality of the materials used. So it is best not to stint and ‘make do’, you will only lament it later.

Therefore, part of your planning must include how far you want to go down your refurbishing route. You could repaint the kitchen cabinets and replace the handles. In all sincerity, that might spruce up your kitchen, but it will not add a great deal of value and might even detract from it if your painting skills are not up to much. You could replace the units’ doors completely, which is a step in the right direction.

Other valuable improvements include increasing the amount of artificial and natural light available; replacing the worktop and sink and changing the floor. If you renew the floor, you should make it easier to clean.

If you tend to do a lot of fatty or smoky cooking an extractor fan is a necessity in order to keep a kitchen clean. Cleanliness is a very important issue with modern people. However, people do not certainly have much time (or inclination either sometimes) to spend on cleaning, so convenience is another buzz word. All surfaces should be of the ‘wipe-down’ kind. That is, a quick spray and a wipe over and it is spotless. Scrubbing went out a long time ago.

The sink ought to be of plastic or resin because they do not scratch as easily as aluminium and scratched aluminium sinks not only look dreadful but the scratches harbour germs. The lighting should be adjustable, but if you have small windows, enlarge them. You can adjust this light with nets and or curtains.

In conclusion, the best advantage of remodeling your kitchen is that it will be a joy to cook in and that is why you should remodel it if you are not considering selling up quite yet.

Buying And Maintaining Farmhouse Garden Furniture

Farmhouse garden furniture is otherwise known as rustic garden furniture and goes back to the old days of farms and country living. It is a style all of its own and is quite distinctive. Generally, farmhouse garden furniture is coarse, bulky and heavy. Occasionally it is roughly cut, but that is not always the case although it is seldom carved in great detail. Farmhouse garden furniture is made to last.

Farmhouse garden furniture includes the complete assortment of garden furniture such as tables, chairs, benches, gazebos and arbours. Farmhouse garden furniture is customarily made of local wood, but can also be made of iron.

To compliment the garden furniture, there is also indoor furniture in the farmhouse style although this might be a little finer, a little less heavy so that it can be moved around for cleaning purposes.

Farmhouse garden furniture is usually manufactured from local hardwood such as oak, cherry, maple, mahogany, teak or beech, but in fact anything that is to hand. Softwood, such as pine, is cheaper, but it does not usually last as long as hardwood even if it is maintained habitually and as it should be.

Hardwood furniture can be stained, oiled or varnished, although it is normally best to just rub linseed oil into the natural timber. A little staining may help bring out the beautiful natural graining in the wood.

Softwood garden furniture is normally full of knots which many people find ugly. If this is how you think, then you can give the furniture three coats of paint in order to safeguard it.

If however, the knots do not worry you, you can stain and varnish it instead. In either state of affairs, all farmhouse garden furniture should be maintained every year in the autumn; that is whilst the sun is no longer at its hottest and before the rain and cold weather set in. The problem with anything manufactured of any wood is rot.

Hardwood contains more natural oils than softwood so it is better able to protect itself, but all wood ceases producing these oils when you kill it by cutting it down. The oil on the surface is dried out by the sun and these dry patches then suck some oil up from deeper inside itself, but the further inside it needs to draw the oil from the less it can suck, which means that eventually the outside becomes dry and then it will suck in water.

When that happens, rot has set in. Hardwood can last a couple of years before it gets to this sorry state, but softwood will probably last less than a year. This is why you have to seal the oil in and the water out with paint or varnish in the instance of softwood or restock the oil by rubbing in linseed oil in the instance of hardwood.

You could paint hardwood too if you want to, but most people buy hardwood farmhouse garden furniture because it has a lovely grain and paint would only cover up that grain. Decent farmhouse garden furniture is not cheap, but it is attractive, difficult to steal and will last a lifetime if well looked after by a few hours maintenance once a year.

How To Buy Or Make Cushions For Garden Furniture

People who have garden furniture prefer to spend as much of the summer sitting in their garden as they can. For these people, the summer months are too short and so they spend every spare moment of sunny weather enjoying the flowers in their garden and the good weather.

Some people dine in the garden too and it is also widespread practice to read the newspaper in the morning over a cup of coffee and a book or magazine in the evening with a drink on the patio too. Depending on the sort of furniture that you have, this can be pretty tiring for the backside, so it is a good idea to get a few cushions to make your life more comfortable.

If you do not have any garden furniture yet, you have the choice of plastic, metal or wood. Plastic garden furniture is inexpensive to buy, but it does not last a long time. Plastic will often only last for two or three years after which time it goes brittle and breaks due to extremes of hot and cold.

Metal furniture looks better than plastic and can be more comfortable to sit on because it frequently has a fabric chair, but it can be a bit rickety and it looks so austere. I think that metal garden furniture should be avoided. Once it starts rusting, it looks awful as well.

There are two kinds of timber garden furniture: softwood and hardwood. Some softwood chairs, such as the deck chair or beach chair have a fairly comfortable cloth seat, but most softwood and hardwood garden chairs are hard on the backside after a short while. It is for these seats in particular that you will require cushions.

If you are buying a new garden table and chair set, you might find that it comes with matching cushions otherwise you will have to buy or make your own. This is not difficult, but there are a couple of items to bear in mind.

The cushions are likely to get caught in the rain sometimes, so it is best to have them manufactured from materials that will not rot and will not hold water. The stuffing can be that non-absorbent fibre that you frequently find in cheap cushions. It is ideal for use in the garden. The covers should be removable and washable. Cotton or man-made fibre is all right here, because you can put them through the washing machine.

Waterproof material is not recommended because if water does get inside, you want it to be able to get out, not remain stuck inside where it will turn stale. If you want to dry them in a tumble dryer, be wary about using some man-made materials that may melt. You also do not want to use a fabric that might shrink as you will be washing them frequently. The colours must be fast for this reason as well.

While we are talking about colours, the colour or patterns of the cushion covers should be fitting for the colours around them. Please, give this a little consideration: it makes all the difference between great, average and awful cushion covers, but it is where you can express your personal taste.

Outdoor Throw Cushions

For most of us who live in the temperate zones of the northern and southern hemispheres, summer cannot come fast enough. When summer does come, if it is not raining, we like to spend as much time as we can out of doors and as much time as we can in the garden, which is why so many people have garden furniture.

There are several types of patio furniture and some are more comfortable than others, but the most hard-wearing and the most popular is patio furniture made from hardwood. Unfortunately, hardwood is precisely what it says it is – hard wood. It can be fairly uncomfortable to sit on hardwood furniture for over an hour.

The simplest way to get round this is to use outdoor throw cushions. These outdoor throw cushions can be merely indoor throw cushions, if you remember to take them in each day, otherwise they will soon start to rot after the first time you leave them out in the rain. It is easier said than done to take the cushions in every night.

Therefore, it is worth giving some consideration to making special cushion covers for your outdoor cushions. These cushion covers have to be waterproof and the zip fastener must be protected as well so that water cannot enter through there either.

This can be accomplished by covering the zip with a flap, as used on standard bed pillows, and sealing it with Velcro. You could use poppers, but Velcro is simpler and better.

If you are buying new garden furniture, you may get throw cushions supplied with the package. If not, and you would like to purchase outdoor cushions at the same time, check them for waterproofness as talked about above. The other thing to look out for is that the cushion covers match the style of the furniture and the type of garden that you have.

The covers of the garden outdoor throw cushions can be patterned or plain, but do take into account the colours already in your garden. Is there a lot of colour from flowers or is green the predominant colour? And do not forget the colour of your garden furniture either.

You will also want to make sure that these cushion covers are washable, because they will get incredibly dirty fairly often, if you leave them outside. They will be rained on, splashed on, cats and dogs will sit on them and they might even blow around the garden unless you tie them down, which is not a bad idea. You could sew short ties onto them to hold them on the furniture while you are not using them.

If the covers are washable, then make sure that the colours on the cushions are permanent and will not fade or run. Lastly, a lot of materials will tolerate a couple months of sun, but some will not tolerate the freezing temperatures of winter, so remember to take them in for the winter months.

Taking Care Of Oaken Hardwood Garden Furniture

If you are going to acquire garden furniture, it is a good idea to buy the best quality that you can afford and if you have the money then hardwood garden furniture is the best. There are many kinds of hardwood, naturally, but one of the most popular kinds of hardwood, especially in the UK and northern Europe, is oak. It will withstand any kind of weather and if it is taken care of, it will last for several decades.

Oaken hardwood garden furniture is not cheap to buy, that is true, but if you consider the joy that oak furniture will give and the fact that it will last for thirty years if you oil it or varnish it once or twice a year, it is pretty cheap certainly.

In contrast, cheap plastic garden furniture might last two or three years, but then it will have to be replaced. So you can sit on plastic chairs and have to replace them every couple of years or you can buy expensive oak and enjoy it for the remainder of your life.

Hardwood is heavily sought after, which leads unscrupulous traders to log it illegally. So, if you want to placate your conscience, try to make certain that you buy your hardwood garden furniture from a renewable source.

What is more, if you buy from a reputable dealer, you will be given directions on how to maintain it, which will enable you to double or even treble its lifespan.

If your oaken hardwood garden furniture is delivered stained or oiled, you should asked the dealer how you should treat the timber. I think that it is best to buy oak furniture oiled or just stained so that you can make up your own mind how to treat it. Varnished wood has to be varnished again or rubbed down.

If you live in an area where the weather can be extreme in the winter or the summer, you could consider getting covers for your furniture, especially if you know that you are not going to use it for a couple days.

Sunlight is practically as damaging to dead wood as the cold, which is why we stain, varnish, oil and preserve it. Fortunately, this is not an onerous chore and a treatment once or twice a year will keep your oaken hardwood garden furniture in tip-top condition for numerous years.

There are numerous different types of wood treatment, so at the end of the day, you should follow the directions on the tin, but I always like to apply a coat of stain without varnish first and maybe even a second one to bring out the patterns in the wood’s grain, then I apply oil, say, linseed oil until the timber is completely protected.

However, take note, this approach can go wrong. The wood can only soak up so much oil so do not put on more than it can soak up otherwise you will not be able to sit on your oaken hardwood garden furniture for a long while.

How To Keep Your Dining Room Table Mess-Free

Is your kitchen or dining room table a repository for everything that people can not be bothered to put away? In between meals does it get piled up with the post, books, school bags, hats and shopping just because people are too idle to put things away?

A gorgeous looking table is a lovely sight, whether you prefer a highly polished surface or whether you like to see a tablecloth or a runner. Books, a hat, gloves and keys are certainly not the same.

This kind of clutter is a bad practice because at some time or another, someone has to tidy it away and that someone is usually Mum and that sometime is usually just before she wants to lay the dining table for a meal, just when she does not have the time to do it. Even when the mess is removed from the dining table, it usually only ends up somewhere else where it should not be.

If you can not stop this bad habit by instilling some discipline into the members of your family, maybe you should try another line of attack. Screw two or three hooks per person into a board on the wall of your hall so that people can hang things up as soon as they come in and attach containers to the wall with the names of the family members on them so that they can put small things in them that they need every day like keys.

People can get into the routine of putting their stuff in their own container and hanging up larger items. Furthermore, if you find something lying around where it should not be, you can dump it in the right person’s container. This should clear up mess on the dining table just about over night.

The dining table doubtless also doubles as a desk for homework and work brought home from the office. This is not a problem so long as people clear their things away after them, which they all too often do not do. You can make it easier for people to clear their work things from the dining table by having a cupboard close by especially for these things.

Attempt to establish good habits early on in a child’s life by encouraging it to eat off plates at all times because it catches crumbs and by always placing drinks on mats because it does not leave rings on varnished table tops which only have to be rubbed out later.

Another means to discourage family members from leaving items lying around on the table is to place a gorgeous runner or tablecloth on it. Then put a centre piece on the table too. This could be a bowl of fruit or a few photos. If you use the table for dining, you could do what they do in hotels and set the table with the cutlery for the next meal as soon as one meal is over. It saves you a job later on as well.

How To Select Your Garden Furniture

If you are going to take your garden seriously, there are a couple items that you have to do. This first thing to do is work out a plan of how you want your garden to look like. This is easily done using graph paper or the more artistic may choose to draw it. Then you need to landscape your garden according to your plan, although you can modify your plan as you go. After all, you are the boss. Put in any electric cables and water pipes that you may need. Put up your shed and greenhouse, if required then you can start planting and start to choose your garden furniture.

The point of this article is to help you select your garden furniture. There is so much diversity of garden furniture that it can be quite difficult to make up your mind. Do you go for hardwood, softwood, metal or plastic?

Which colour and which style? Some of your choice will be limited, if you are on a budget, but in truth, over the long term of twenty or thirty years, hardwood is the cheapest alternative and plastic the most expensive. Over the short term, two to five years, the opposite is true.

Whether you want armchairs or recliners is certainly up to you and so outside the remit of this article, so is the style that you prefer, although I will say that the most successful choice of garden furniture should blend in with the garden rather than stick out like a sore thumb. Plastic tends to look alright on a patio or deck, but rarely goes well with a garden full of pretty flowers and bushes, whereas hardwood garden furniture tends to fit in well everywhere. You need to be a little careful with softwood and metal.

In a way, it is a decent idea to tackle choosing your garden furniture in the your same way that you would select the furniture for inside your home. It has to blend in with your general style.

Therefore, you might want to put off purchasing your garden furniture until you get your first crop of flowers up, unless you can imagine it in your mind. The only trouble with waiting for Spring is that that is when garden furniture is at its most expensive.

Ask yourself what you anticipate doing in the area where you are planning having your furniture. Are you and the family just going to collapse there after work and on weekends or are you going to hold more formal garden parties there? If you are going to have guests, it should be big enough for the number you expect and the furniture should be strong enough so that it will not collapse under some of the heavier guests. If it is just for the family at least you are dealing with known information: how big they are and how many of them there are.

Another aspect to bear in mind is maintenance. Plastic does not possess to be maintained, but it will perish – become brittle – after a couple of hot summers and cold winters. You can lengthen the life of your plastic garden furniture by keeping it in a shed when not in use. Metal garden furniture may require anti-rust treatment from time to time and if the seat is made of cloth, you should also check for signs of rot, which could lead to someone falling through the seat.

Softwood needs to be treated with preservative, paint, varnish or oil fairly frequently and you should check for signs of rot or splitting, which can still occur no matter how much you take care of it. Hardwood garden furniture needs to be treated once a year as well, but it is by far the most robust material used for constructing garden furniture.

Plastic and metal furniture come in many colours; softwood can be painted or stained any colour you like and hardwood comes in all shades of brown from light oak to rich dark mahogany, but it should never be painted only oiled and stained, if you want to.

If you select hardwood, it can be a bit hard on the backside after a couple hours, so buy a few cushions that match the colour and style of your garden furniture as well. These can be stored inside when not in use or they will become unbelievably dirty and if they get wet it can take days for them to dry, during which time they might start to rot and smell. Removable cushion covers are a good idea.

Home Renovations DIY

It seems that there has been a drop in consumer trust in the building and construction industry of late. This may be because of the scams shown on television or the bribery and corruption endemic in the corporate sector, but it is almost certainly the same motivation why so many are now doing home improvements by themselves.

And why shouldn’t they? A little knowledge of the technical aspects together with with an eye for creativity is often enough to complete the home improvement on your own.

Why are people turning to do-it-yourself home improvements?

There are many people trying to pass themselves off as construction workers, although they do not have a lot of experience in construction or home maintenance and they are literally are out there right now practising, learning their trades on homes like yours and mine across the country.

As a result, homeowners are finding that the jobs are not being finished to their liking. At times they are even pre-paying for services that do not get done or were not part of the arrangement.

You do not have to trust and pay someone to enhance your home. Why not have a go yourself?

You can augment your home?s existing concrete surfaces using acid stains, acrylic paints, epoxy paints, and scoring techniques.

If you are tired of looking at drab gray concrete, there are some easy projects if you are sincere about having a go at home improvement DIY, you can easily give your patio, driveway or garage a revitalizing new look.

Attractive concrete work costs about double that of standard concrete, which is why many people cannot afford it.

However, there are inexpensive methods to beautify concrete after it has cured, without having to pay skilled tradesmen.

Acid-based concrete stains are becoming more and more popular for coloring concrete surfaces. They chemically react with the cement to generate permanent color with a variegated or mottled appearance like that of marble. This results in a natural, stylish looking surface.

Water-based concrete stains are an alternative to acid stains but are much more user friendly because they are so much less dangerous. These stains do not chemically react with the concrete; they are absorbed into the porous surface and act like a dye. The big benefit of water based stains is the wide array of colors available.

If you want to venture beyond the basic staining of your concrete, think about using some scoring techniques to create patterns on the surface.

You could make your concrete look like a tiled floor for instance. It is just up to your imagination. A mini angle grinder with a 4 inch grinding wheel is the ideal tool for this.

The key thing to remember when scoring is to trace out the pattern on the concrete first and ensure you are happy with the way it looks because scoring is irreversible.

Epoxy paints make an excellent coating for garage floors and cellar floors. Many industrial floors have epoxy coatings because of their hardiness and resilience to chemical spills as well as their appearance.

In recent years, however, it has become very popular for residential use with the availability of an growing number of different colors. This is not a complicated job, but the key to successful application is surface preparation.

Epoxy paints have also become available in a water based form making it safe for the DIY’er and perfect for indoor jobs. They cost a little more than stains. For a 400 square foot area, you’ll spend about $200 for the materials required for this project.

So, you see? You do not have to spend big money to improve your home. You have the ability to do it yourself. With a few instructions and a little bit of work, anyone can turn dull concrete into a work of art of their own.

With this, you don’t have to sell out your family members and close friends to make it work. You also don’t have to spend a small fortune on website development and advertising to get started.

You can learn to propagate and sell plants from your own home. Don’t let the complicated sounding term “propagation” scare you off. This simply means you know how to root plants from seeds or cuttings to resell.

Anyone can do this! If you don’t know how right now, the right resource could teach you in just one afternoon.

Many people go into the business of plant propagation as a family venture. They are able to teach their children some valuable lessons about work and money when they get them involved. Children enjoy participating because they like to make things grow.

Some people take this on as a solo venture to help make ends meet or for some extra spending money. The great thing about a plant propagation home based business is that you can earn as much or as little as you want. Your income is dictated by the number of plants you propagate and the amount of time you spend selling them.

You may choose to take your home based business to the Internet and sell to a very large market. However, you will have to either set up auctions or a website to sell your plants. You may have to spend some time and money on advertising and be ready to ship any plants that are sold.

Even though your expenses will be considerably higher when you operate a plant propagation business online, the profits can be considerably higher, especially in your plants are in demand.

The trick to ensuring your plants will be purchased by others is to stick with basic flowers, trees, and bushes that you know are widely used by homeowners and landscapers. Look around your residential area and see what others are growing in their yards. Look through local nurseries and make sure you beat their prices.

Organic Dog Food

The desire for healthy food seems to apply equally to people and their pets, because many animal owners prefer to buy organic products to feed man’s best friend. One could be forgiven for being surprised at the large variety of organic dog food on offer on the market. Just as for humans, there are a lot of pet health issues that one could cure or even prevent in the first place by the use of organic pet food.

For instance, organic dog food could reduce the risk of the pet developing skin diseases and allergies. The reason for the positive health impact is the absence of additives, chemicals, colourants and pesticides. Instead there are simply grain extracts and high quality proteins for ingredients of organic dog food. Organic dog food also contains more nutrients, which is reflected in the higher levels of energy and the normal weight of the pet.

Normal dog food often causes diabetes and excess weight with all the concomitant problems that accompany these illnesses: back ailment, organ failure and decreased mobility. How can organic dog food help here? Well, organic food items for pets do not contain bulk fillers, they are nutrient-packed products that create energy not fat deposits. Moreover, it is best and a lot easier to prevent health issues than to try to treat them afterwards.

A more efficient digestion and a stronger immunity system are the other main benefits that come with the feeding of organic dog food. Due to the lack of chemicals usually mixed in regular pet food, your dog will not vomit or experience gas or diarrhea. A healthier metabolism is what will result from a healthy diet. Moreover, the quality of the nutritional substances in organic dog food, boosts the immunity functions, thereby reducing the risks of infection and all sorts of specific diseases that affect dogs on an everyday basis.

In general, veterinarian experts claim that organic dog food significantly extends the life of any animal, to say nothing of the fact that it will pass through old age a lot better. It is quite common that pet owners who choose organic dog food, are also interested in eating organic foods themselves, sticking to clean natural products that enhance bodily functions and avoid toxins and disease.

Ask your local dog food provider about organic dog food and if there is none available at your local shop, try to order it online. There are many web sites that offer such products at fairly decent prices.

One last tip, be very wary of dried dog food, no matter what it says on the packet. I used to have a dog that stayed at home alone during the day, while I went to work. I didn’t like to leave ‘wet’ food, because of flies, bacteria and vermin, so I bought dry food, which would not deteriorate during the day. However, within six years she had diabetes, which meant that I had to inject her with insulin every morning. The veterinary said that it was very common for dogs fed only on biscuits to get diabetes, so check with your vet first or feed organic wet food.

How To Keep Your Dog Motivated

Keeping the attention of your dog while training is not always easy. Dogs can be easily distracted, and it is important to not allow the dog training sessions to be sabotaged by boredom. Making dog training fun for the dog and the human alike is essential to creating a happy, well adjusted and well trained dog.

Providing random positive stimuli during the day is a great way to keep the interest of the dog. Doing things the dog enjoys, like walking in the park, riding in the car, and playing with other dogs, are good ways to keep the dog’s attention, but you must reward him for small successes.

For instance, in order to reward the dog for coming to you when you call him, ask the dog to come to you, without giving any clues about a walk, a car ride, or other treats.

After the dog has come to you and obediently sat down, attach the lead and begin the reward. This can be either the afore-mentioned walk in the park, ride in the car, or anything else the dog likes to do.

Providing some kind of reward, whether a treat, a special outing, or just a scratch behind the ears, every time the dog does something you want, is a good method to maintain your dog’s motivation while you are dog training.

If your dog knows something good is going to occur every time he follows your commands, he will be more motivated to do want you tell him every time.

Distraction training.

When training a dog, it is vital to not allow distractions ruin the training. The dog must be trained to ignore distractions, such as other people, other dogs, other animals and loud noises, and concentrate on what is being taught These kinds of distractions can also be used as rewards when training your dog to come when told.

For example, if your dog like romping with other dogs, whether it be in a park or with the neighbour’s dogs, let him play with those other dogs. Then go into the park or yard and call your dog.

When he comes to you, provide lots of praise, treats and other rewards, then immediately let the dog to go back to playing with his friends. Repeat this several times and praise the dog each time he comes over to you.

The dog will quickly learn that coming to you means good things (treats and praise) and not bad ones (being taken away from the park).

This so-called distraction training is one of the most difficult things for your dog to learn, because dogs are social animals by nature, and leaving the pack is one of the hardest things you can ask your dog to do. Most dogs will be understandably reluctant to leave their doggy companions, but it is vital to persist in dog training.

Training the dog to come to you when you call may require some creativity on your behalf at first. For example, waving one of his favourite toys, or a lure, is a good way to get your dog’s attention and put the focus back on you. If your dog has been clicker trained, a quick click can be a good motivator as well in dog training.

Once the dog begins to become used to coming when called, you can begin to reduce and then stop the visual cues and focus on getting the dog to respond to your voice alone. It is vital that the dog responds to voice commands alone, since you will not always have a toy or other lure to hand.

Hand-held Mosquito Zapper

The hand held bug killer is the best way of clearing the space around you of insects, especially the flying ones such as mosquitoes. The indoor bug killer evaporates any insect from a mosquito to a gnat instantaneously on contact with a pleasingly loud, electrical ‘zap’!

However, this does not mean to say that the indoor insect zapper cannot be used outside, as long as it is not too wet. It should be treated like any other high voltage electrical equipment. Keep the indoor insect killer dry and please do not use it while you are standing in water!

Models do vary greatly, but there are basically only two kinds of hand held insect zapper: the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric insect killer. Both models are equally effective at killing insects and employ the same methods.

The electric insect zapper resembles a ‘junior’ tennis racquet, but with three layers of ‘strings’, which are in fact wires. The central grid of wires becomes electrified at the touch of a button, while the other two networks, one on either side, are only earths.

When a bug is caught between the wires of the indoor bug killer, it creates a short, which evaporates it instantaneously with a loud crack. The hand held bug zapper will kill other insects too, but they tend to fry rather than explode.

I have had the rechargeable sort for about five years and am extremely satisfied with the indoor bug zapper. In fact, the electric bug zapper has come a long way in the last few years. A fully charged electric bug killer is powerful enough to last for several hundred swipes and will hold it’s charge, if unused, for weeks without any significant discharge.

The battery recharge unit will take intensive use for the best part of a year, although its ability to hold a charge for several weeks gradually reduces after six or seven months.

The latest indoor insect zapper I’ve used has a main on/off switch, an LED that comes on when it is activated (the brightness of this light also gives an indication of the battery’s strength) and an LED that comes on when it is plugged in for recharge.

The instructions suggest that it should be (re)charged for sixteen hours. I usually put it on charge over night once or twice every week or two, although the hand held insect killer shows a marked increase in performance with only a couple of hours charging.

The latest model I’ve used also comes with a powerful beam called a ‘headlamp’. I have found this very handy when walking in the garden, but I’m unsure whether it’s supposed to lure the mosquitoes in the dark so that you can zap them if you’re feeling bored or just vindictive, rather like an Anglerfish.

I’ve used the headlamp on my hand held insect zapper for that reason too, but the light uses a lot of battery power. All in all, the electric insect killer is a huge asset at any outdoor event. The indoor bug killer is useful for ‘clearing’ your bedroom before retiring; it’s unbeatable for killing evening mosquitoes and it will eradicate wasps at a lunch table too.

Have you ever used an indoor bug zapper? If you haven’t, or if you want to get an electronic insect killer, please click one of the links to our web site or blog. Also published at Hand-held Mosquito Zapper.

Boy Dog Names

Dog owners will say that there is no given method for choosing a good name for a new dog. Whether they have to think of girl or boy dog names, usually they will choose something that sounds cool or a name they like rather than putting some thought into what the name actually means. Popular boy dog names have a variety of meanings, but more often than not the meaning will not suit the dog it is given to. Below is a quick guide to the top five boy dog names and what they really mean.

Generally, first thing you have to do when you obtain a new dog or puppy is choose a name for him or her. For most dog owners, this doesn’t require much thought. They just choose a dog name at random and that is the name by which the poor hound will be known forever. However, there is something you should think about when going through dog names in order to make sure that you choose a suitable one.

Firstly, dogs can sense attitude and tone of voice better than we can. If you choose a dog name for comedy value or after someone you dislike, your dog will see straight through you. As a result, their attitudes may change or they may refuse to respond to your commands. Dogs’ names should mean something but should not be detrimental to their development so you should really take the decision of the dog name seriously.

Although dogs are very intelligent animals, they can’t process the same amount of information that we can. Therefore, dog names ought not be more than two syllables long. If they are more than that, most dogs will not respond. Max, Sam, Becky, Lady, Molly and the like are excellent dog names because they are short and the names are easily heard. They understand these dog names and that will help your probability of training them successfully.

However, dogs’ names should help them form an identity of their own. Common names don’t really allow them to do that, so finding something simple but unusual can help their characters a great deal without damaging their ability to respond to a command.

Max: This is probably the greatest boy dog name and the meaning is surely the reason why most people pick it for their hound. It literally means “the best”. After all, every dog owner thinks that their dog is the best.

Jake: Jake is short for Jacob, which means “victor”. This is an apt boy dog name, if your puppy has taken over the house within moments of setting feet inside of it!

Buddy: Buddy is a familiarization of Budd, which means “messenger”. This boy dog name could be apt for a farm dog or one you might possibly train to retrieve the newspaper from the porch in the morning. It is a very popular boy dog name throughout America.

Bailey: The boy dog name Bailey is French and means “steward”. This is fairly suitable if your dog is responsible and sensible, so it is probably suitable for a Labrador or collie puppy, for example!

Sam: Sam seems to mean “an answer to prayers”. This is a good boy dog name for sedate dogs that are easy to train and are largely quiet!

Very few people consult the meaning of names when choosing boy dog names, so instead of going with your first thought, it may be worth taking the time to choose a dog’s name that really suits your dog. It costs nothing to spend a little time in thought about your dog’s name.

The Birthday Barbecue Party

A lot of people over the age of twenty have a sort of love-hate relationship with birthdays. They love to have a party and be the centre of attention and a lot of fun, but they hate getting older. But I believe that people should celebrate their birthdays. After all, you enjoy going to someone else’s birthday party and so you are morally obliged to put one on for others too.

And birthday parties ought to be a load of fun. It does not have to be a children’s style party, of course, but you could still dress up and play games.

You could put on a barbecue for all your friends and family and do it cowboy style. Have a barn dance that would make ‘JR’ proud. The food for this is simple enough. Begin by providing plenty of Texas sized spare ribs, half-pounder hamburgers, T-bone steaks, and jumbo size hot dogs with plenty of bread and salad.

For music, it has to be country and everybody has to wear cowboy clothing, although it would probably be better to leave the shootin’ irons at home. Annie Oakley style costume for the ladies and Buffalo Bill style for the gents. If it is going to be a big party, ask everyone to bring their own favourite dish, in true Southern style. That would be a great way to celebrate an adult’s birthday for the family.

If you do not go much on the macho cowboy scheme, you could try a Caribbean style barbecue. Wear flash short sleeved shirts and bright colours or swimming costumes. The music could be reggae and calypso and the food would be grilled fish and chicken with salad and plenty of fresh fruit. Provide hot and not so hot chilli dips and barbecue sauces. You could have a go at limbo dancing too, that is always good for a laugh.

Or perhaps you would prefer a humorous barbecue party and all dress up like the hillbilly family ‘The Clamperts’! That would be fun. The men could wear old velvet hats and old clothes tied up with string like Jed and Jethro and the women could come as Ellie May or Granny. I think that the original food like possum and bullfrog might be difficult to get hold of in some places, but you could just supply what you want for this one. Steaks, hamburgers and fried fish; bread and salad with cake to finish.

Another favourite type of barbecue for a birthday do is the Luau. An Hawaiian barbecue is really something else. You will need bright colours and plenty of tropical Hawaiian decorations. You could supply half coconut shells for drinking out of and lots of coconut and pineapple based drinks. You should ask your guests to wear loud Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts, provide plenty of leis and hula music and a ‘loudest Hawaiian shirt’ contest is compulsory.

If none of those takes your fancy, how about a ‘Vicars and Tarts’ barbecue? You can use your own imagination on that one though. Any more tea and crumpet, vicar?

If your barbecue party is to continue into the evening and it might get nippy, you could hire or borrow some patio heaters, just so as to give you a few extra hours in the garden.

Propane Gas Lanterns

There are several types of gas lantern. They are chiefly used to produce light when you do not have a battery light or access to an electrical socket. In fact, they are most frequently used for emergency situations, when the power goes out at home, when you are camping or sitting in the garden later in the evening. They offer much more light than most flashlights and they are handy because you can stand them on a table, carry them, or hang them up.

There are quite a few models of gas lantern. However, they differ not only in design, but also in the type of fuel they burn. Some people like the old fashioned style kerosene or paraffin lamps. They like the design, the historical facet and possibly even the smell.

Their advantages are that the fuel is cheap and easy to come across. However, their disadvantages are that they smell and are very dangerous if knocked over. The storage of surplus paraffin or kerosene is also a grave hazard, should a fire break out.

If you want one of these old design kerosene lanterns, they are widely available at camping, army surplus and hardware stores. If you are going to use them for emergency lighting, it is best to have four or five on hand, clean and ready to fill.

The wicks should be trimmed and the glass clean. Keep them in plastic bags to stop dust building up on them. Keep one already filled with kerosene so that you can fill the others by its light. It is safer and less wasteful this way.

However, the modern equivalent of the kerosene lantern is the propane gas lantern. Propane gas lanterns burn with a very clean flame, which is also quite hot, so it does warm up its immediate surroundings, maybe to a distance of a foot or two. Therefore, it can keep faces warm on a cool evening in the garden.

Propane gas lanterns are fueled by gas canisters. They come in various sizes from quite small to large, but the gas does burn for a long time. The small canisters are best for emergency use and the larger ones for use on camping trips or in the garden. They are relatively cheap, are clean to burn, provide some heat, are light weight and are very safe.

On the safety side of things, it is clearly very important that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using any form of gas lantern, because they are all a potential fire hazard, especially when camping in a wood.

Make yourself acquainted with the operation of the lantern you make your mind up to use before you need to use it. The gas lantern may get hot so be careful with it and get used to lighting it in the daylight so that you know what you are doing, when you need the gas lantern for real. One last tip, if you are taking a propane gas lantern on a camping holiday, take enough canisters with you. The merchant should be able to tell you how many hours they will last for the use you are going to put them to.

Why Dogs Snore

We all know that it is not unusual for pet owners to permit their pets to sleep with them at night. In deed, one third of pet owners have at some point, allowed their pets to sleep on their beds. Dogs provide a companionship that can’t be given by any other kind of animal. However, this doesn’t mean to say that some people do not let their cats or another pets sleep with them too.

It is made easier too by dogs having a sleep pattern that is very similar to our own. Dogs often trust their masters completely, which makes them a bit more relaxed during the night. This explains why most dogs fall asleep easily and later on, go into a deep sleep where REM sleep activities can occur. In fact, once a dog enters this stage, the owner may need to call them several times before they can truly be woken up.

I’m sure, lots of us have already seen a dog ‘running’ during sleep or, at times, barking with his eyes closed too. These dogs are said to be dreaming. Breathing patterns can also be observed among dogs while they are asleep. For example, there are breeds which breathe heavily and there are breeds which breathe more lightly. The heavy breathers are much more likely to snore than those which do not breathe so heavily.

Dogs which snore can be rather a nuisance during the night, depending on the degree and frequency of the occurrence of this phenomenon. Like with humans, there are various considerations why dogs snore. Most though have to do with the obstruction of the passage of air in the throat caused by the collapse of certain areas along the throat. The same as in humans.

A dog that snores very badly ought to be checked for various issues to determine which treatment can be best provided. Some dogs are especially prone to specific allergic reactions that cause constriction in the windpipe. It may also be that there is some excess tissue in the areas that are preventing correct breathing. It is best if a veterinarian checks on various factors through careful evaluation of the dog’s anatomical features and general physical symptoms.

Maybe, your dog is overweight. Like with humans, obese dogs are more likely to snore during the night. This is because they have more flesh surrounding their throats. Therefore, they have excess tissue that hangs around the throat which can potentially cause the obstructions. Once this problem is corrected, the risk of snoring will be decreased. This would not only be healthy for your dogs, you may actually enjoy nights of restful sleep too.

The facial features of the dog in general affect the amount of snoring too. For example, some dogs have squashed faces which restricts their nasal passages to a greater or lesser degree. The construction of their nasal passages also largely contributes to their difficulty of breathing. They are very much like humans with a cold, who have to breathe using only twenty-five percent of their nostril capacity. Dog breeds with shorter faces need to expend lots of effort to breathe properly. It takes them more effort to breathe and they are also more likely to snore loudly.

Minor surgery can afford your dog great relief. Be sure though that, before any decision is made, you are well educated about the potential risks and consequences of surgery to stop a dog snoring. Most procedures are irreversible, so careful thought must be given to any operation you allow. In fact, it is best to accept the guidelines provided by your veterinary doctor.
