What Is Wavefront Technology In Lasik?

Lasik surgery has hugely improved the vision of millions of individuals worldwide. It has turned the visually impaired into sighted individuals who are capable of seeing their children again and contributing to the family’s income by working. Two items that millions considered they would never be able to do again.

However, Lasik eye surgery has not been sitting on its laurels. Far from it, Lasik surgery techniques are being improved all the time. One such enhancement is Wavefront Technology. Wavefront Technology with relation to Lasik eye surgery is used to more precisely map the patient’s eyeball, which makes more exact surgery possible.

This is of immense importance because eyeballs are not all the same shape. They are like hands, superficially they all look the same, but once you get down to particulars, they are not. There are all shapes sizes and proportions. The same is true for eyes.

The better the map of the eye, the more chance that the surgeon has of giving you the best vision they can, in relation to the precise problems that you have in your particular case. Wavefront Technology assists the surgeon accomplish this.

Wavefront Technology is actually a technology that has been adapted from astronomy. in astronomical telescopes it is crucial that the lenses are as perfect as they can be, because at high magnification, even the very slightest impairment would lead to huge distortions, which in turn would make the telescope just about useless.

Astronomers were using this technology in the 1970′s, so it was already quite advanced when some bright spark noticed that it could become adapted for use in eye surgery too. Wavefront Technology was born and taken on board by Lasik and other eye surgeons with great expectations.

In fact, the bright spark who noticed the potential value of this article of astronomical technology was a German doctor called Josef Bille who started using it in his practice.

He gradually enhanced and adapted the sensors and announced it to the Lasik manufacturers in 1997. This in turn allowed the manufacturers of Lasik equipment to adapt Wavefront Technology to their own apparatus.

Wavefront Technology is highly complicated in design and technology but also highly easy to understand. The Wavefront machine sends a flat sheet of light (known as a wavefront) through the eye to the retina, which reflects it back to the Wavefront device.

The Wavefront machine compares the two, measures the imperfections, chooses what has to be done to correct them and guides the laser to the right spot in order to accomplish the corrections. As simple as that!

However, the geniuses who created and developed Wavefront Technology did not give up there. They have their machine send in multiple wavefronts from multiple angles so that the computer can build up a three dimensional picture for even more accuracy.

There are now well over 60 patterns that can be automatically corrected by a Lasik laser guided by Wavefront Technology. So, if you have any issues with long or short sightedness, create an appointment to see your Lasik surgeon as soon as they can.

What To Put In Your Social Network Profile

Everyone has heard of social networking web sites. Social networks such as MySpace and FaceBook. Most people who are on line all around the world have at least one account with one of these many, many social networks. They permit members to find long-lost friends, stay in touch with family and make new contacts in places or even countries that they have never visited

When you sign up to one of these social networking sites, you will get asked to fill in account details. These details have nothing to do with a bank account. Rather they are what most members call their ‘profile’.

This profile can request fairly detailed questions on the pretext that the more information you give, the easier it will be for your friends to find you, should they become looking.

Typical questions are name, age, sex, address, schools attended, location of work, musical interests, hobbies, likes, dislikes, Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail address book passwords and user names. They also want a photo.

They want your address book so that they can email your friends and tell them that you are now a member and offer them membership too. So, as you can see, it becomes vital to judge just how much detail it is prudent or you are willing to give away.

The first thing to bear in mind is: merely because a social networking website asks you for an answer to a question, do not feel that you have to answer it. For example, it is the case that if you add plenty of details and a photo, more members might recognize you and want to become friends, yet how many strangers do you want in your home town to know where you live, where you go to school or work and what you look like?

If you are worried that you may be simple for a predator to trace, lie about your location. For example, if you live in a small town, say you live in the nearest big city but make certain you put a matching zip or post code from that city too.

If you post a photo, it is probably not a wise thing to put details of where you go and where you live. On the other hand you could supply those details so that friends can find you, yet use an avatar or cartoon to represent your image and use a nickname instead of your real name.

If you opt for a nickname, choose a sensible one. ‘Hotand Lusty1990′ or ‘BigBoy1990′ are not apt for most surfers no matter how funny you may think they are at the moment of registration. Do not include your age or a tell-tale to your age either, as in the above examples. People will take for granted that the number is your year of birth.

The guiding principle should be: how much would I tell a stranger if one walked up to me in the street? Not much, probably. Well, there could be thousands doing just that in the virtual streets of social networking.

How You Could Landscape Your Garden In The Texas Style

Most people just let their garden mature naturally in that they do not select a particular style. This is all right, but it can become a hodge-podge, if not looked after. Some people, however, consciously choose to landscape their garden according to a certain style or a theme. Some of these themes are very sophisticated and others are quite simple.

One of the many themes to pick from is the Texas Style. We all know that everything in Texas is done on a large scale, so you would be forgiven for thinking that landscaping in the Texas Style would necessitate a huge garden.

It is possibly easier to carry out your landscaping in the Texas Style in a larger garden, but it just depends how you go about it.

The first things to remember are that Texas is very hot and so the terrain closely resembles wilderness. Plants and shrubs are thin on the ground, so to speak. Landscaping in the Texas Style is what you might call minimalist gardening.

You will have to make use of every square inch of your property, if you only have a small plot and the average temperature will have to be fairly warm in the daytime although it is good if it gets chilly at night. This will allow you to grow many of the plants that flourish or at least grow in Texas. One good thing about Texan plants is that when they do bloom, they really do show a lot of colour.

One of the kinds of plant that you are sure to have success with is the cactus. There are many varieties of cactus, so you should not have too much difficulty finding several types that will grow in your garden in order to produce a Texan dry climate look, as long as it does not rain every other day where you live.

Cacti yield magnificent flowers when they blossom, but they have big thorns, so if you have young children, the Texas Style garden may not be for you for a few years yet.

Once you have your flora sorted out, you can begin looking for accessories. You can pick up ideas from the old cowboy films and from magazines, but a few suggestions are: a chow wagon style barbecue area with a canvas hood; some broken wagon wheels; a well, working or not (it could even be a fish pond that looks like a well); boulders and wooden fence posts.

Boulders are usually overlooked by gardeners but there are some intriguing stones, boulders and rocks in all kinds of shapes and colours. Boulders with fossils in them are great conversation starters. Smaller rocks can be used to create a rock garden and this will expand the choice of plants that you can grow in your Texas Style garden. You will be able to plant succulents, small cacti and other small plants that frequently grow in this austere environment.

Lighting should be low and subtle so that you can see the stars at night. You could even have a camp fire with log seating or you can achieve this look by using low powered solar lighting. Solar powered lighting will also save you from having to have an electrician wire up your garden.

When you have finished landscaping in the Texas Style, do not forget to get pleasure from it by eating outside as often as you can. Barbecues, steaks and Texmex food are the order of the day.

Power Tools And Safety Regulations

Power tools have largely taken over from hand tools all around the world, because they allow individuals to get more work done in an alloted space of time. Power tools work far more quickly than hand tools and without the operative having to expend a lot of energy having to turn a handle or push a saw.

However, the improved productivity that power tools deliver comes at a price: 1] you have to pay for the electricity that drives the equipment and 2] there is an increased risk to the operative’s health and safety. The cost of the electricity should be more than easily covered by the increased productivity, but health and safety is often overlooked until it is too late.

People seem to not comprehend the potential dangers of an inexpert person using a power tool. For example, a slip with a hand saw, usually means an ugly joint, but a slip with a power saw can cost a finger; a miss while hammering a nail home can cost a bruised finger or an ugly dent, but a slip with a nail gun can be like having a bullet in the leg.

This is why insurance companies have made it imperative for firms employing trades people to send their workers on health and safety courses. Claims from inexpert workers was becoming ludicrous as inexpert trades people gave up their old hand tool in favour of the powered alternative.

It caused a great deal of commotion in the Eighties and Nineties in the building industry among employers and employees alike to have to send people on courses about how to use power tools. In Britain, employers were not allowed to let a carpenter use a rotary saw, for instance, unless he or she could prove that they had been taught to use one. Most individuals were of the opinion that the health and safety people had gone too far.

But there were fewer accidents; less time off work due to injury and fewer claims against the insurance firms.

There was tremendous opposition in our building firm from the workforce, when we declared that nobody could sign out a power tool unless he/she had a valid safety certificate to confirm training in the use of that particular piece of apparatus.

We also had a joinery shop, where traditionally each carpenter could go to create anything he needed. Then this policy came in and only one carpenter out of forty was permitted to use the power tools. All of a sudden there was a rush to get safety certificates. The new laws had hurt people’s pride.

They thought that they were being told that they did not know their trade, but once they were disqualified from using power tools, they were made to look like inexpert apprentices again. So there was a rush to get a certificate and power tool companies would send a safety specialist to the workplace to train all the relevant tradesmen in the use of their power tools free of charge and pass out certificates.

Then our firm decided to get their ISO 9000 certificate and power tools had to be given certificates of inspection as well. So now we had to employ someone to look after the power tools.

Just tradesmen with certificates of competence could sign out a power tool and a power tool could only be signed out if it had a certificate to prove that it had been passed ‘safe to use’ within the last two months. All power tools had to have a certificate of reliability attached to it, a set of safety rules and a pair of safety glasses. That covered the firm from accusations of negligence.

That was 15-20 years ago in the building industry in the UK. I am not saying all this as a history lesson, but more to point out that people can go to a shop and buy or hire very hazardous power tools without having to establish competence. Professionals at work have to establish that they and the tools are up to the job, but the public does not.

I am not in favour of a new layer of bureaucracy, but I do want to make people aware of the danger of not knowing how to use power tools correctly and without even the most fundamental safety equipment.

Do not use power tools without safety glasses is the first rule. Shield your eyes from splinters and flying debris at all costs. A professional would, so so should you.

The Beauty Of Moroccan Decor

Moroccan furniture is usually solid wood and stylish. Morocco is an ex-French colony, but it is very near Spain as well. In fact, two small parts of Morocco, Melilla and Ceuta are still under Spanish jurisdiction.

This means that Moroccan furnishings and decor has Berba, Arabic, French and Spanish influences. These Mediterranean influences are obvious in traditional and contemporary Moroccan furniture.

When combined with Moroccan decor and colours, Moroccan furniture can change your home. Walls are normally emulsioned plain white or cream and lightly decorated with old carpets or tapestries with one or two photos or paintings hanging between them.

Reds and browns are the principal colours. Poignant writings from the Koran or other Arabic philosophers are often written out in bold script and framed.

Moroccan decorations such as lamps, lanterns, mirrors, benches, vases, mosaic end tables, ottomans, rugs and ceramics can add that remarkable local flavour to the decor, setting off the solid timber or padded cloth furniture.

Pillows feature large in Moroccan interior and garden decor, but they also use settees and seats in the European fashion. Morocco is famous for its leather craft and leather is frequently used to cover chairs, sofas and footstools or poufes.

Scatter rugs are important for sitting on and they are taken out and beaten each day to keep them clean as Morocco is a hot, sandy and dusty country if you travel a couple of miles inland from the coast. Camels are still used for transport in rural areas and camel hair is turned into rugs, blankets and wall coverings.

Moroccans like tiles and mosaics and Arabic style tiles are quite distinctive if you want to use them in your bathroom and kitchen. If you want to dine in Moroccan style, they usually dine at a very low round table with the main dish in the centre from which everybody helps themselves, although in a family, some members will feed others too.

Following tradition and hygiene, you may only touch food with your right hand, although everyone will have washed both hands before coming to the table. Bread, rice and couscous feature highly in Moroccan food as does potatoes, carrots, lamb and chicken.Water is served during the meal and tea and coffee afterwards frequently with very sweet cakes sprinkled with icing sugar and syrup.

Individuals relax at home wearing long, loose-fitting garments and lounge on benches or on rugs on the floor surrounded by cushions. In the evening, lighting will be low provided by low wattage bulbs concealed behind red and brown stained glass or cloth. Candles, scented or not also feature a great deal in living rooms and bedrooms unless someone wants a stronger light to read by.

Candles in wall sconces are common methods to highlight special areas and light up corridors and some doorways. Frequently these sconces do not hold candles, but hold scented oil with a floating wick which is less expensive to leave burning between the hours or twilight and bed time.

What Are Bags Under Your Eyes?

Bags under your eyes are traditionally associated with a lack of sleep, but the fact is that some people are more liable to them that others. Some of this has to do with lack of sleep, fair enough, but other factors are age, skin sort and bone structure.

Therefore, if you begin getting bags under your eyes all of a sudden, then you can assume that the problem is because of recent events, but if you merely find that the bags under your eyes are becoming more and more obvious as you get older, then the reason may be more basic.

Many people, especially women, spend time each day of their adult life looking after the skin under their eyes, because they realize that that region of their face is the most scrutinized by friends and strangers alike. People are conscious that their eyes are mirrors of their feelings (or even souls) and they want those mirrors to be set in as attractive frames as possible.

The fact is that for the majority of younger individuals, the reason for bags under the eyes is as simple as lack of sleep. However, it is the reason for the lack of sleep that ought to be the main concern.

If it is only because they have young babies, then that is par for the course or if it is because of partying all night, the remedy is simple, but if it is because they are worrying all night then that is something else. The source for the worry has to be sorted out.

Illness is another cause for acquiring bags under your eyes and then it is a question of going to your doctor. Sleeping disorders such as sleep apnea and insomnia also fall into this category, but doctors can help here too.

There are thousands or treatments for bags under your eyes which come about as a result of weakening facial skin muscles, which normally happens because of age. Some individuals use expensive skin creams and others opt to use more traditional remedies. However, both the costly creams and the traditional cures usually rely on the use of astringents.

I cannot profess to know which are the best creams, but I can list a few of the time-honored remedies for bags under your eyes. Numerous individuals try used tea bags, slices of cucumber or cold eye covers like wet cotton wool that has been held in the fridge or even the freezer.

Still other individuals want an immediate and more permanent remedy for the bags under their eyes and opt for surgery. This kind of surgery is not as radical as having a full face lift but it works in a similar manner. A person who undergoes tucks under the eyes will experience black eyes for a short time and a little discomfort at first, but the improvement will last for years.

Some people choose to have this type of surgery done ‘whilst on holiday’ somewhere, so that none of their friends notice that they have black eyes for a couple of days.

Safe Gas Boiler Repairs

There is not actually much to go wrong with contemporary gas furnaces, but each mechanical item can fail and the central heating system is one of them. The problem is though, that hundreds of millions of households around the world have come to rely on their central heating system.

In general, people are not advised to meddle with items that they know nothing of, especially if it refers to something that could become a fire hazard, but this article is about safe gas furnace repairs, that you can undertake yourself.

Some of these tips might stand you in good stead if the gas furnace in your home central heating system gives up the ghost. These pointers could save you cold nights and high call-out fees.

The more that you become intimate with your central heating system, the more easily you will identify problems that arise, because in general, home heating units have intermittent issues and recurring problems.

Does your heating system keep switching itself on and off at inappropriate times? This almost certainly has something to do with the thermostat. The old way of dealing with thermostats was to tinker with them, but no one does that anymore, they only replace them. You might as well do the same.

Purchase a replacement thermostat and fit it, but if you want to learn more, play about with the metal disk in the old one and refit it after a modification. If you keep going like this, you might find out what works one day. Some thermostats are quite easy devices and you can suss them out.

If your central heating system keeps closing down, this is also probably a difficulty with the thermostat, so long as there is fuel in the tank. The strategy is the same. Look at the disk inside the thermostat and read any writing on it. Normally, if you bias it one way or the other, it will correct the problem.

A very easy one is the pilot light. If your set-up is not working, simply check that the pilot light is burning. The pilot light serves as the ignition for a heat cycle, so if there is not one present, there will be no heat cycle or heating.

The pilot light can be blown out or only go out because of a temporary shortage of fuel, after which it will have to be re-ignited.

If your whole heating system seems to be working normally, but there is no heat coming through the vents, it is probably the blower. Check the fan belt and either tighten the tension or replace it. This is an easy job, which, having done once, you can do in your sleep.

The main thing about any home appliance is not to automatically reach for the phone book if items go wrong. That is exactly what the want you to do. They would like you to think that things are too intricate unless you have studied them, whereas in fact, the majority of engineers just replace parts – very little gets fixed or taken apart any more.

Travelling By Train

During the last ten years there has been a return to train travel, especially in the United States. This might have something to do with nostalgia and romance, but most experts put it down to a consequence of the in-flight bombing of Twin Towers on 9/11/2001.

The government’s and the airlines’ reaction to those acts of terrorism have resulted in enormous hikes in the degree of security at airports and rightly so, but travellers are also put off by the long queues and invasive searches at airports. This difficulty is even worse at busy airports and during holiday periods such as whilst schools are closed.

Car travel is also an alternative, but then you have to carry out your own driving and that brings its own issues, especially if you are with children and particularly if you are a single parent. Besides that, travelling by train is a vacation in its own right. Your trip begins the moment you put your bags in the rack and find your seat.

Once you have sat down, given the kids a colouring book and a can of soda, you can sit back, relax and just snooze or look out of the window at the scenery flying past. Most of your problems are over until you get to where you are going. Your kids cannot get lost or wander off and they are very safe from predators.

Furthermore, trains seats are usually much more roomy than the equivalent airline seats. Economy seats in a train are much more comfortable than economy seats in an airplane. You can also get up and walk about which makes long journeys much more comfortable.

The vista is also better from a train than a plane. After all, clouds are clouds are clouds, but you can see all sorts of things out of the window of a train. There are also sleeping and dining carriages to break up the trip, but there is usually also attendant service in your seat, if that is what you want. Simply push the button and someone will come to take your order.

Have you heard of the Orient Express, the Flying Scotsman or the Trans-Siberian Express? What romantic visions they summon up. Contemporary trains may not have the nostalgia or the steam locomotives of the Thirties, but they are still fantastic to travel on.

You can book your seats on a train trip much the same as you would on a plane, which means that if you get up to go to the bathroom or dining carriage, your seat will still be empty when you return. This is a colossal plus factor, because it is annoying if someone takes your seat.

The next time that you make a decision to go away, think again about going by train. You can leave your car at the station or you can even take it with you on the train, if you want. You will not regret having given the rail network a opportunity, because the likelihood are that you have forgotten how handy and inexpensive they are.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a lot of topics, but is presently involved with American Flyer train sets. If you would like to know more about train sets for kids, please go over to our website for some great offers.

Tips For Buying Garden Furniture On Line

Purchasing garden furniture on line is not the perfect solution as it both solves and presents some difficulties if it is used indiscriminately. For example, if you find it difficult to get around the shops and garden centres, the Internet will permit you to visit hundreds of places to compare styles and prices, but you will not have had sight of your furniture and it might be costly to return it.

Therefore there are a few things to watch out for if you want to buy garden furniture on line. Some of these suggestions will apply to other items as well especially heavy items.

Be wary of shipping charges because some companies will strive to hide the fact that they can be horrendous. If delivery charges are an extra, do not forget to add these fees on to the cost of the garden furniture before you evaluate prices. Some businesses will talk some claptrap about an order processing fee in an effort to mask their delivery fees. These companies are being dishonest and you should avoid them like the plague.

Try to switch off to the words ‘discount’ and ‘sale price’ until you have added up all the costs and you have compared this total with the total cost of a comparable item. Similarly, be very suspicious of comparisons between list price and sale price. Manufacturers often ‘recommend’ a high list price purposely so that the retailer can offer a discount. It is very common practice, but designed to deceive.

Beware of ‘price snobbery’. If you see two retailers selling exactly the same items of garden furniture but at widely different prices, do not be automatically convinced that the cheaper one must be inferior. Instead, look around the cheap web site for extra costs. Do not forget that most retailers buy from the same manufacturers.

Do not trust any firm that says that they will not be beaten on price because they are the cheapest on the Internet or that they will undercut anyone you can prove is cheaper. They have no proof that they are the cheapest and if you prove that they are not they will decrease their price only to you because you caught them in their lie. These people are liars.

Companies that make a big issue out of fast service are not really giving you anything. Every company likes a fast turn-around because they can bank the check earlier and the warranty finishes sooner as well. You will find out how good their service is if you have difficulties. Empty promises and blowing one;s own trumpet mean nothing. Self praise is no praise.

You can check up on the firm’s customer service record by typing the company’s name, city of business and the word ‘complaints’ or ‘problems’ into Google. You will soon be able to determine for yourself whether you are dealing with a reputable firm or not. Purchasing garden furniture on line is the same as buying anything else expensive on line: it is up to the buyer to beware before parting with his money because it might be hard to get it back if there is a difficulty.

How To Choose Furniture

If you have recently moved home or have just finished redecorating, you may be thinking that it is time to buy some new furniture too. However, new furniture can make a big difference to the feel of your home and it is not cheap, so it is best to do a bit of homework on how to choose furniture before you dive in and commit yourself to spending a small fortune.

Some people prefer to live in the recently decorated apartment or house for a while to get a feel for what will suit the ambiance first. However, sooner or later, you will just have to bite the bullet and start traipsing around the malls and the Internet. Catalogues and brochures are a decent starting place and a fund of free ideas. Next come the monthly ‘Home’ magazines. Show rooms in the big stores and on the Internet can generate ideas as well.

Are you attracted to timber? Many people are and it has become an increasingly rare and therefore valuable resource, especially the hardwoods and even more particularly the foreign hardwoods like teak and mahogany.

Some home-grown hardwoods are just as dear, think of walnut and then you just have the ordinarily expensive ones like cherry, oak, cedar, maple and willow. Less expensive, although still not cheap are pine and birch.

If you like the gorgeous dark colour of mahogany but cannot afford it, you could always stain a cheaper timber the colour of mahogany. It is not difficult and you can achieve very satisfactory results. One tip that all interior designers give though, is not to have different colour timbers in the same room.

You can mix different types of timber, but they should all be near enough the same colour. If you have different colours either move some pieces of furniture to a different room or stain the lighter ones to match the darker ones. The other way around does not work, you cannot stain something lighter.

If you do not want to commit yourself to going into debt to get all you new furniture at once (and who can blame you), it is a good idea to buy the one article of furniture you see somewhere that you really, really like. Say a beautiful table or cabinet or suite of chairs. There is no necessity to be too practical here as you probably already have something to sit on, eat off, put things in and stand the TV on.

The point is that you are no longer happy with the items of furniture that you have and want to change them. Buy your lovely thing and throw something out. Keep your eyes open for the next lovely thing that matches your first lovely thing and as soon as you have the money, buy it and throw something else out. You will have a patchwork quilt of a house for a while but if you tackle the house room by room, you will get there soon enough.

Places Where People Live Long

Most people do not look forward to death. They would like to live a long life and endeavour to stay eternally young. The peoples of each country spend billions every year on health care and beauty products.

Some people believe that the length of time you live is written in fate and there is nothing that you can do about it, others think that we just have a certain number of heart beats, but most people believe that genetics, diet and lifestyle are the main influences.

However, there might be another factor worth looking at: your town of residence. There are a few places around the world where people seem to live longer, on average, than is standard for their country or globally.

Take the city of Okinawa in southern Japan. Okinawa has over a million inhabitants, 900 of whom are more than 100 years of age. Japan has an aging populace in general, but nowhere there matches Okinawa for longevity and the percentage of centenarians is between four and five times higher than in the UK or the USA.

Not just do Okinawans live longer, but they also tend to remain healthy until their dying days, which is everyone’s dream. Diet is considered to be the main reason why Okinawans live such long, healthy lives. They consume a great deal of fish, tofu, soya and seaweed and swill it down with plenty of tea.

This makes their diet low in saturated fats and pretty low in salt. However, it is also a broadly-held belief in Okinawa that one ought to just eat until one is 80% full not 100% This may put less strain on the digestive system, but no one is really certain yet if this has a bearing on living a longer, healthy life.

Then there is Loma Linda in California, the USA. The citizens of Loma Linda live an average of five to ten years longer than the residents of near-by towns. The town is mainly Seventh Day Adventist, which preaches vegetarianism, no smoking and no alcohol. Some will look to these reasons as the reasons for living longer.

However, this does not account for why almost everyone, even the smoking, alcohol-drinking, meat-eating inhabitants, lives longer. Others put the longevity down to religious belief, but researchers are puzzled. Maybe going to church and relying on God relieves believers of some of the stress of daily life and stress is famous to be a reason for major illnesses.

Another strange location is Owoda on the Mediterranean isle of Sardinia. It is only a village of less than 2,000 residents but it has far more than the average number of 100 year olds than elsewhere. What is even stranger is that there are as many old men as old women which is not the standard anywhere else in the world.

The famous Mediterranean diet and the pleasant climate are thought to be factors at play here, but it may also have something to do with their genes. The inhabitants were practically isolated for hundreds of years and marriage among relatives was not uncommon. Usually this is not recommended because it can cause abnormalities. It looks like the abnormality that inter-marriage caused for the Owodans is longevity.

Choosing Your Patio Garden Furniture

Once you have finished making your patio, your deck or your lawn, you will unquestionably start thinking about how you can enjoy more time out of doors. Therefore, you will need some garden furniture. Many shops stock garden furniture. You can try home improvement centres, large department stores and garden centres. There are also businesses on line that will deliver. The hard job is picking your garden furniture.

There is a very broad choice of designs of garden furniture – a style to suit every person and complement every garden. So, before rushing down to the garden centre, it is worth considering for a while what you would like to accomplish with your open-air seating area. Do you want a theme? Do you want to entertain or dine there? Or do you just want to sit peacefully, take pleasure in your garden and read a magazine?

Indeed, the answer may well be a combination of all those variables. If you simply want to sit there with a drink and a book, you may be satisfied to just buy a couple of chairs and a small table, but if you want to have guests or take family meals outside, you may prefer a more substantial table. A large oak table would be quite costly, but it would look magnificent and last for a decade or more.

If you choose a table, you will have to have chairs to match, but do you want loungers as well? They could be of plastic and kept in the shed until wanted.

You will probably need some form of shade. This can be given by folding, even removable umbrellas or by overhanging trees or shrubs. Wisteria or clematis can do the job too and cost you almost nothing.

Do you intend cooking in this space? If you do, what and how? Do you fancy a barbecue pit or a proper hob and oven? A lot of people in regions where the climate permits are doing a great deal of cooking outside in a carbon copy of an indoor kitchen, but without all the walls.. If you plan the outdoor kitchen carefully, you will be able to use it in the rain too. I find it lovely not to have kitchen smells in the house and cooking out of doors is a good experience as well.

If it gets nippy in the evenings then you can think about buying some patio heaters. They are not expensive to buy or to run and one standard patio heater can keep quite a group of people warm. (By the word ‘standard’ here, I mean upright, like a lamp post).

Lighting is the last large consideration in the list when choosing garden furniture. There are actually two kinds of garden lighting to mull over: lighting to see by and lighting to lure insects away. Again, you could use standard lamps to light up your patio. They shine their light far enough so that you can still look at your garden after dark or you could have individual wall light on dimmers.

The one light I would definitely have is a mosquito lantern. Hang this away from where you sit, because they do attract insects to them which they then electrocute with a pleasing zap.

Earning Profits By Selling Antiques On Ebay

The selling of antiques on eBay has a confusing reputation. Most traders say that it is very problematic to sell for the price that the article deserves, but those that do earn money at it say that you only have to know what you are doing. So what are the tricks and tips to making money by selling antiques on eBay?

This first thing to realize concerning selling antiques on eBay is that the sale of antiques can take a fairly long time. Individuals generally go to eBay for a quick fix to a problem – a lack of something.

Antiques do not actually fit into this category. Another group of people do go there for collectibles, but they are usually cheap(ish) contemporary collectibles like Barbie dolls.

eBay does not have the name for selling antiques so those that are interested in antiques do not go there for that, although they do go there. There is also a great danger of forgeries and copies.

This means that selling antiques on eBay is a bit hit and miss, so you have to give an item time to sell. There is a time delay on selling antiques on eBay and you have to take this into account.

If you would like to sell antiques through eBay’s auctions, it might be best for you to sell cheap collectibles as well as antiques. This will supply you with a cash flow until your antiques begin selling and providing a regular income for you.

Be prepared to put a reserve price on your things and them have to relist them if they do not sell the first time around. Another good tactic is to position the things in the longest action possible, but permit someone to buy them from you at your reserve price before the auction closes.

When you list your items, be sure that you write like an expert. Do not be tempted to dumb down your language, because you need to show that you are a serious collector or / and dealer.

Traders are more likely to buy antiques off you if you sound the part, otherwise you might come over as a chancer. Therefore, if you are selling antique telephones, learn the terminology of antique telephones and use it in your advertisements.

Sell antiques that have mass appeal. The chances of you selling an expensive niche market antique on eBay are quite small, which means that you would be paying over and over again for relisting the item. This will obviously nibble away at your profits.

Therefore, in summary, strive to sell antiques with ‘mass market’ appeal. Articles that sell well are antique dolls, games and clothes; old coins and stamps and antique domestic things like old telephones. However, you have to be prepared to wait for your sale and relist your item once or twice.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a number of subjects, but is now concerned with searching for old fashioned telephones. If you want to know more, please visit our web site at Family Plans For Cell Phones.

Eyesight Improvement

We are under great pressure not to look old, not to look our age. One of the best compliments people of more than 21 years think that they can receive is: ‘Really? You do not look it!’ To a certain extent this obsession with a youthful appearance has always been with us, but the pressure has ratcheted up due to films and television.

Film stars and pharmaceutical companies unscrupulously team up to persuade us that we need this surgery too in order to become popular. What they do not tell you is that the pharmaceutical businesses have paid the film stars to have free treatment and then paid (or sponsored) the chat shows that so blatantly promote them.

And ageism is rife as well, both among the young, whose worst insults usually have the word ‘old’ included and among employers who can not wait to be rid of employees at 65 after a lifetime of service. Governments or at least some governments are exactly as bad, penalizing pensioners with a meager salary after fifty years of paying taxes.

Individuals used to grow old gracefully, now it is a sin. There is a long list of ‘improvements’ that you can plough your way through: face lift, liposuction, hair transplants, dentures and several others, but the one that really makes sense to me is eyesight improvement by whatever technique works.

We live in a beautiful world and it is a shame that whilst we are at the correct stage in our life to enjoy it – that is while we have more time, more money and have become more philosophical, we begin to go blind. At the same time as your grandchildren begin arriving, your eyesight begins to go.

There are numerous factors why you could begin losing your eyesight besides only old age, but old age does play a part in some of them as well.

Macular degeneration is normally called age-related macular degeneration, but there is a rare kind that has an impact on the young. There are two types wet and dry. The dry kind is less severe, but the wet kind is more easily treated.

Cataracts are thought to be age-related as well, but I had premature senile cataracts 20 years early. Fortunately these are easily treated as well with only a couple of minutes of surgery. Glaucoma is a vicious one, which can leave you totally blind, if you do not catch it soon enough and have it treated.

The key to success with all of these eyesight impairments is tackling them early. If you suspect that anything is not right with your eyes, go to a GP or optician immediately. Do not be fooled by quack cures that you might see advertised on late night TV or in the small ads. They ought to get banned.

Eye exercises and eye drops are fine for healthy eyes, but they will not help you if you have a problem, only a fully qualified expert can do that. These advertisers prey on individuals who either do not have the money for surgery or who are frightened of it and there are lots of them around too.

How To Remove Bed Bugs From Your Clothes

Bed bugs used to be a part of eveyone’s daily life before the Second World War – or should that be ‘a part of everyone’s nocturnal life’? For hundreds of years, people merely grinned and bore it; they had to because there were no effectual methods of getting rid of them.

They lived in the stored clothing, the furniture, the bedding and the houses of the rich and poor alike and because houses were located so close together, families were larger and people were in and out of each others houses, you could not eradicate a bed bug infestation for long.

Then came the bombing of European cities in the Second World War 1939-1945 and many inner cities were unsafe, so the authorities decided to take the opportunity to flatten the inner city slums and start again. An equivalent programme was began in America, but not because of devastation.

The authorities pulled down hundreds of millions of houses and made billions of rats, mice, bed bugs, fleas and other nasties homeless. In fact, rat poison and a new wonder insecticide, DDT, were used widely in the clean up. By the end of the Forties or during the Fifties, bed bugs were just about eradicated from the Western World.

The Baby Boomer generation was the first one never to have been troubled by bed bugs. This joyful situation lasted until the mid-Nineties, when increased long haul travel and increased immigration permitted bed bugs to hitch lifts back to the West. These unwelcome hitch hikers usually came back on clothing that had been packed away in suitcases.

And so here we are today, in a state of affairs where the West’s major inner cities have a bed bug issue of epidemic proportions. Bed bugs are being passed around from person to person on all forms of public transport but especially buses, trains and taxis and anywhere where individuals congregate, but especially hotels, cinemas and waiting rooms.

So, here are a few tips on how to avoid infesting your home with bed bugs. If you stay in hotels a few nights or one night at a time, merely unpack what you need to at any one time. In other words, live out of your suitcase.

If you are on a longer vacation, by all means, unpack everything, but keep your suitcase closed and have all your clothes boil washed, dry cleaned or tumble-dried on ‘HOT’ before you repack them to go home.

If this cannot be done because of the sort of cloth, examine all the seams, hems, pockets, cuffs and collars and blow them with the hair-dryer on ‘HOT’. The hair-dryer is not anywhere near as effective, but all stages of a bed bug’s life cycle are killed by seven minutes exposure to temperatures above 45C or 115F.

If you cannot heat-treat your clothing before you leave the hotel, seal them up in plastic bags and treat them when you get home – preferably in a laundrette or dry cleaners.

What do you do about your overcoat, if you mix with people every day on the bus or at work? This is a tough one. Bed bugs are resilient to all forms of insect killer, which is why we are having this epidemic, so you will literally have to examine your overcoat every time you come home or get one that you can put in the tumble-dryer every night.

One bed bug can lay 300 eggs and last for a year without feeding, so you cannot know that you have not got bed bugs, you can only say that you have not seen any – yet.

Ideas For St Valentines Day Party Games For Kids

Are you thinking of holding a kids’ party on St Valentine’s Day? Then you would be wise to start thinking of St Valentine’s Day party games for kids too. Kids are more trouble when they are bored than when they are boisterous. Thinking up games is not much of a difficulty but there are usually two things to take into consideration: the age of the children and your finances.

The bouncy house always goes down well with children. You could hire a bouncy house for the day and hang hearts and flowers around the outside. Check on the Net first that the firm hiring out the bouncy house is a member of your country’s governing body for bouncy house rental firms.

You could divide the children into teams and hold various races. One race could be the ‘Race of Hearts’, in which the kids have to run to the finishing line and back with a stuffed heart (or pillow) between their knees. It always results in lots of laughter.

Another race could be to ‘Wrap Mummy’ in which every team gets a couple of rolls of paper kitchen towel and they have to wrap up someone like a mummy as a gift. You could add bows and a name and address tag as well.

The teams could play ‘Mr and Mrs’ in which the compare gives a famous name and the teams have to click a clicker, bang a gong or ring a bell if they know the answer. The compare may say: ‘Samson’ the reply is ‘Delilah’; ‘Hilary Clinton’ – ‘Bill Clinton’; ‘Queen Elizabeth’ – ‘Prince Phillip’. You get the idea.

Split along gender lines, you could play the ‘King and the Queen of Hearts’. Do you remember those round sweets with a heart on them and a romantic saying in the heart? Well, they do not cost a great deal for a colossal bag of them. Give each child 50 or so and get them to stack them one on top of the other.

Whoever builds the tallest tower in a minute goes through to the next round. Two boys against each other and two girls until there is only one girl and one boy left. They can eat the sweets, naturally.

You could put a target on the ground, say one of your heart-shaped cushions, give each child an uninflated sausage-shaped balloon and put his or her name on it. Then the children stand in a circle around the heart, say twelve feet away, inflate their balloon and let them fly (without a knot in). The first one to land on the heart denotes the winner. Or the nearest to it. You could have one go each per round or they could fire at will until someone wins.

You could play Valentine’s Day bingo. This can become as elaborate as you have time for. You could create your own cards with hearts etc on them; if the children are young, you could call out pictures instead of numbers, but the funniest of all is if the caller makes up some Valentine’s Day slang to go with each number.

For example, when calling bingo numbers in Britain, it is common to say: ‘Legs 11′ and a great deal of players will whistle; ‘two little ducks, 22′ and somebody always says ‘quack, quack’. Each number has its own saying and they are used with minor variations everywhere. You could make up your own like: ‘two hairy legs, number 11′ or ‘two beautiful legs, number 11′.

If you cannot think of something suitable for each number, just do as many as you can – they always get a laugh and that is what it is all about when you are organizing a St Valentine’s Day party for kids.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea or sleep apnoea is the condition which causes sufferers to stop breathing frequently during sleep. These interruptions can last anything from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. There are three forms of sleep apnea Central, Obstructive and Mixed or Complex Apnea. Obstructive apnea is by the most common form and it usually comes about in overweight, middle-aged men.

The most commonly recommended method of overcoming obstructive apnea is weight loss, but as this is not simple for most overweight people, the most common treatment is CPAP, which means the wearing of an oxygen mask.

The problem with sleep apnea is that the shortage of breath means that the blood and the brain are starved of oxygen. When the level of oxygen in the brain drops to a certain level, it wakes the body up to do something about it. However, the heart normally beats more slowly at night, giving it a rest, but as the oxygen level in the blood drops, the heart will pump harder to send more blood and oxygen to the areas it is most needed.

Another effect is that people suffer from fatigue during the day, which leads to falling asleep at the wheel and accidents at work. In fact, sufferers of apnea are three times more probable to have an accident than normal.

Sufferers of apnea hardly ever wake up when their brain gets them breathing again, but it can be very distressing for their partners. My wife thought that I had passed away when she first became aware of my difficulty with obstructive sleep apnea and the spluttering back to a state of breathing resembles a drowning man coming up for the second time.

Other worries that can arise after a night of poor sleep are those associated with tiredness: irritability, mood swings, bad concentration, headaches, excessive anxiety, depression, acid reflux, nocturnal sweating, lack of sex drive and increased heart rate at night.

Most instances of obstructive apnea can be vastly improved by a loss in weight. In fact, a ten percent loss of weight can produce a twenty-five percent improvement in apnea. Moreover, anything that relaxes the muscles should be avoided – particularly alcohol. Ceasing smoking can help as well.

Mechanical means of improving the condition are raising the head, so that the weight on your neck hangs down towards the chest rather than pressing down on the windpipe. Sleeping on your side can help as well for the same reason.

Black African males and Indian (from India) males are almost twice as much at risk of suffering from apnea as Caucasians. Approximately 4% of Caucasian males and 2% of Caucasian females suffer from sleep apnea. A surprising statistic is that the same percentage of Chinese men and women suffer from apnea as Caucasians. This is startling because the Chinese are not normally as overweight as Caucasians.

The terms ‘apnea’ and ‘apnoea’ mean the same; the former being the American spelling and the latter being the English spelling.

Styles Of Garden Furniture

If you want to get some new garden furniture, the first thing to do is think about the styles of garden furniture that would suit your garden and your requirements. If you already have an idea of what you would like, you are already half way there, otherwise you will have to do some research on the different styles of garden furniture

This research can be done on line quite easily by typing ‘garden furniture’ into Google, but if you would prefer more information on the furniture, you could get a few magazines on gardening and landscaping. If you rather a more hands-on approach, you can go around the home improvement stores and the garden centres.

In fact, you will have to go to the shops sooner or later anyway unless you intend buying on line too. I personally like to do some exploration on the Internet first and then use the knowledge that I gleaned from there to make informed decisions in the shop. I do not quite trust the photographs. I want to see and touch the garden furniture and check the joints and finish.

Once you get to the garden centre, you will come across different styles of garden furniture including: farmhouse or rustic, contemporary or modern, resort or poolside and these can be made from hardwood, softwood, plastic or metal.

Hardwood is by far the most popular material for garden furniture and most people prefer the farmhouse style, although there are some fantastic modern styles too.

No matter which style you prefer or what it is manufactured of the number one best piece of advice is to get the best quality that you can afford. This is true of most items you can buy, but I think that it is especially true of garden furniture because it will have a very hard life. Just imagine it: snow, rain, heat; temperatures varying from -5c to + 35c and varying humidity.

Cheap plastic cannot erect with those circumstances. I used to buy cheap plastic and needed to replace it every eighteen months. Then I bought expensive plastic and I still have some of that but in essence it only lasted three years. I have seen metal garden furniture and it always rusts, even if it is plastic coated, enamelled or painted. Softwood lasts well, but it will rot after approximately five years even if it is quite well taken care of.

The only garden furniture that I have ever had or seen at friends’ houses that lasts and looks good all that time is hardwood. There is a broad selection of hardwoods. There are native hardwoods like oak, cherry, walnut, maple and beech and foreign hardwoods like mahogany and teak. These hardwoods can also be stained to practically any colour although most people prefer the natural look.

Hardwood garden furniture is easy to maintain as well: just rub it over with linseed oil once or twice a year. If you carry out this simple maintenance procedure the timber will not dry out and it will endure the elements for twenty years or more ensuring that you get maximum value for money from this, the finest of all the styles of garden furniture.

Water And Exercise

We, as human beings, as very reliant on water. We are roughly 70% water and we cannot live without it. In fact, we can go weeks without food, but only about three days without water.

One of the sad things about the Western diet is that a great deal of people no longer drink water. They have completely replaced water with sugary soft drinks, which of course contain enough water but also contain too much sugar or sugar substitute.

The first step that these people have to take in order to get back on track is to give up this silly, childish habit and begin drinking plain water again. It has been estimated that around two-thirds of people do not drink enough water, which means that they are in a permanent state of partial dehydration.

Water has a number of important functions in our bodies, but one of the most important ones is to flush out toxins. It is worth realizing that if you feel thirsty, your body has arrived at a state where it is crying out for water. In other words, it has already passed the state where it requires water, so endeavour not to wait until you are thirsty before you take a drink.

Another fact is that tea, coffee and alcohol (some of our most popular adult drinks) are diuretics, which means that they force urination, often more than they replace. So you can put 250mm in but you may lose 270mm. This is naturally not the purpose of drinking if you are thirsty

Exercise is another reason why we lose water. In fact, merely by being alive, we lose water due to body heat and evaporation, but while we are actually doing something, we lose water quite rapidly. You might get worried about drinking water before going to bed, but if you can do it, it is a very good thing.

If you wake up a bit groggy every day and need breakfast, tea or coffee before you can actually wake up, it might be because of dehydration, not because you have issues waking up. Being dehydrated results in drowsiness and lack of concentration.

In fact, dehydration is a major killer in the Third World. This is not because there is no water, but because the water is contaminated. This contaminated water causes diarrhoea which causes dehydration. It is vital to keep drinking when you are sick even if you do not feel like eating.

It is recommended that we drink at least eight tumblers of water (say, of 250mm each) a day. More if you are exercising or sick. It sounds like a great deal of water, but most individuals are awake for about 16 hours a day, so eight glasses works out to merely one each two hours.

It is more of a difficulty to get into the habit of drinking water on a regular basis than it is to really do the drinking, but once you have established the habit, you will feel better on a day-to-day basis. It will not prevent you from getting sick, but your general degree of health will improve, because you are getting rid of toxins.

Young Girls And Their Dolls’ Prams

Do you have a young girl in your life? Say a young daughter or a young niece? If she is between about five and ten years of age? If you are wondering what you can buy a little girl of this age as a gift, then perhaps I can help you out with a couple of tips

Does she love playing with dolls? Then I am willing to bet that she would like a doll’s pram. Young girls like to copy their mums and the mothers that they see on the street. They like to walk with their friends, pushing their dolls in their prams around the garden.

Some people say that this is a bad thing to encourage, but despite attempting to discourage parents from purchasing conventional toys for boys and, especially, girls for thirty or forty years, young girls still like to play with dolls and doll’s prams, Wendy Houses and toy tea sets..

Those young girls from the Seventies and Eighties are now in their thirties and forties, lots of them are feminists too, so the experience of playing with dolls and dolls’ prams and other customary girls’ toys does not appear to have done them any harm.

In fact, I think that it is far healthier for girls to play with dolls than it is for boys to play at being soldiers or cowboys brandishing toy guns, although even that almost certainly does not do any harm. Boys have probably been playing with toy guns, toy bows and arrows or even toy spears for thousands of years.

And I venture to say that young girls have been playing with dolls and giving them tea parties for just as long as well. When I was in infants’ school fifty years ago, our class had a Wendy House and girls and boys played in there together, although it was more for the girls – I do remember thinking that.

Traditional girls’ gifts like dolls, dolls’ prams, Wendy Houses and toy tea sets type of went out of fashion in the West in the last twenty-five years of the Twentieth Century, but they are back again now. These traditional girls’ toys can get seen in all the toys catalogues and toy shops such as Toys R Us.

They seem to be a great deal cheaper now than they used to be too, unless you want a dolls’ pram from one of the traditional pram manufacturers like Silver Cross. Silver Cross dolls’ prams are beautifully made displaying all the attention to detail and quality that they put into their full-size prams, which were ‘By Appointment to His and Her Royal Highnesses’ the kings and queens of the United Kingdom from about the mid 1930′s to the mid-1980′s. Who knows, perhaps they will become appointed again whilst the next royal baby arrives..

At the moment Silver Cross, which has outlets all more than the world and on the Net, is also giving away a classic rag doll with each buy of one of their prams.

Why Is Your Credit Rating Important?

Many younger individuals do not realize simply how essential a good credit rating is. To be fair-minded, a great deal of older people only found this out the difficult way as well.

Some individuals only learn by cruel experience. I know that there are people who have made money out of fraud, but honestly speaking the average person should bear in mind that extremely wealthy institutions (like banks), owned by very wealthy people create the rules regarding finance and they create the rules to suit themselves.

This is fair enough if someone is attempting to steal from them – I have a burglar alarm as well – although we might not all agree with how much of their own way the bankers ought to have it. In general, if you are silly enough to try to steal from banks, they will make you pay for your stupidity. And they will punish you arduously and so will all the friends of the bankers like governments and merchants.

The course of punishment could be custodial hell or they might allow you your freedom but without the ability to get any credit, which makes life very difficult, as anyone who has undergone this state of limbo can attest to. If you are not credit worthy, you are an outcast and made to pay for it.

You will not be able to get credit at all, which means electricity meters, water meters, gas meters and pay-as-you-go telephones, all of which are the most costly method of paying for these amenities.

Furthermore, no more credit cards; Internet cafes will be a way of life, no hire-purchase and everything has to be paid for in cash, which makes you a target for muggers. I hope that I have persuaded you, that your credit rating is highly important.

On top of that, it is a valuable asset as there are jobs that you cannot have, if you are not credit worthy. Credit worthiness can be compared to your personal reputation with your friends and family.

So, if you have fallen foul of the financial institutions, what can you do about it? Make no mistake about it, bankers are like the church in this regard, they are waiting to welcome you back into the fold. The process is known as credit repair.

If you are not good with money, you should start by visiting a Citizens’ Advice Bureau. If they do not exist in your country, you will have to phone all your creditors and explain to them that you want to sort the problem out.

One of your creditors will suggest that you consolidate all your debts into one. This is the best tactic, because it means that you only have to concentrate on paying one bill a month. Your difficulty here is not accepting the first offer that comes along. And do not believe that the banks are going to be the best to take the debt consolidation loan from either. They might be, but do not take it for given.

This is where you really do need help from a specialist, but take it from me, you have made the first step towards cleaning up your financial life if you have gotten this far, but you still have to be careful of rip-offs.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on numerous subjects, but is now concerned with Debt Consolidation and Credit Rating. If you want to know more, please visit our website at Debt Consolidation and Reduction

U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program

The U. S. Marine Corps Reserve has a sixty odd year old program to collect toys for tots from needy families both in the United States and in other countries. The goal is to collect new unwrapped toys during October, November and December every year and then give those toys out as Christmas presents to disadvantaged children in the community in which the campaign is being conducted.

Their objective is to bring a message of hope to disadvantaged children in order to encourage them to become ‘responsible, productive, patriotic citizens’ in the words of their web site.

One of the foremost aims of Toys for Tots is to unite the communities where U.S Marine Reserve units are stationed for the three months of October, November and December every year in the gathering and distribution of new toys to children from less well-off families in order to help them experience the joys of Christmas.

One of the hopes is that the recollection of receiving these presents every year will encourage the kids to appreciate the communities where they live and take an dynamic part in those communities when they get older.

Communities where there is no unit of U.S. marine Corps Reserves can also take part in the program but they should first register for authorization. These non-Marine organizations will usually, but not always, be ex-Marines.

These groups organize fund-raising events throughout the year in order to finance the acquisition of new toys since donations of new toys do not always meet the organizations’ needs. These fund-raising events can include sports days, golfing tournaments, bicycle races, swimming tournaments et cetera.

Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys for needy children in the local area.

The original concept sprang from Major Hendrick’s wife, Diane, who had made a doll for a deprived child. She gave it to her husband to give to a suitable charity. When he could not find one, she suggested that he start one himself, so he did just that.

The following year Marine Corps Reserve units across the country adopted the plan and it has been actively providing toys to disadvantaged tots ever since. Walt Disney got involved from the very beginning by designing the logo that the Marine Reserve charity still makes use of today.

Other celebrities to become involved in the early days were Nat ‘King’ Cole, Peggy Lee and Vic Damone, who recorded the Toys for Tots theme, which was written especially for the charity by Sammy Fain and Paul Webster.

Numerous celebrities have been played a part during the years. People like Bob Hope, John Wayne, Doris Day, Lorrie Morgan, Tim Allen, Kenny Rogers and Billy Ray Cyrus. First Lady Nancy Reagan acted as the national Spokesperson in 1983 and First Lady Barbara Bush served as the national Spokesperson in 1992. She wrote in her autobiography tenderly of her involvement with Toys for Tots and called it one of her favourite charities.

Finding A Cure For Snoring For A Good Night’s Sleep

Snoring is thought of as a ‘benign difficulty’ by most persons who snore. A bit of a joke actually. But it is no joke to people who have to listen to it. No joke at all. Snoring can also be a sign that there is a deeper difficulty. It is similar to obstructive sleep apnoea, but is not automatically the same.

It is similar to obstructive sleep apnoea too in that the sufferer is hardly ever aware of the problem – that is left to a sleeping partner or everyone else in the house.

Deprivation of sleep might sound like bad luck or something that can be caught up on the next day, but in actual fact it goes far deeper than that. Those who have not had a decent night’s sleep find it hard to concentrate and might even nod off. This is naturally not a sensible idea if you are a driver.

Sleep apnoea causes a loss of quality sleep on a frequent basis and so it is no surprise that sufferers of obstructive sleep apnoea run three times more risk of a driving accident or a major accident at work than others. That is horrific enough, but the sleeping partner of a sufferer of obstructive sleep apnoea runs the same increased risk.

Apnoea also exerts more strain on the heart and is a major issue in high blood pressure. It also starves the brain of oxygen with whatever effects that may have.

There are a number of methods of treating snoring (apnoea is usually treated with an oxygen mask known as CPAP).

There are nose strips which stop the walls of the nose collapsing and reverberating, if that is your problem. There are extraordinary pillows that raise the head reducing the weight of a heavy neck on the windpipe. There are dental appliances to stop the tongue and other parts slipping back into the airway causing an obstruction. There is acupuncture and there is hypnotism.

However, it is worth saying, that most of the loudest snorers are overweight. For these people, the first approach has to be to lose weight, because that will also benefit them in many other ways too.

Individuals find that changing their sleeping position assists with their snoring. The worst position for snoring is lying on your back. Lying on your side is a good way of decreasing snoring as can lying on your front.

The thing to keep in mind is the weight of your skin and flesh weighing down on your windpipe, especially on your throat. There is also the problem of your tongue and palate falling into the back of your throat and either vibrating or blocking the passage – lying on your side or front stops this happening.

The Benefits Of Buying Decent Clothing

One of the strangest social or cultural phenomena since the Second World War is the change in criteria which individuals use to purchase garments. For thousands of years before then, people wanted the best possible clothing that they could get and one of the criteria that they used to judge each other was their dress sense or the quality of their clothes.

This all started to change in the Seventies when it became more significant to not be seen wearing the same article too often, so it became more desirable to have five cheap shirts that would not last long than to have one high quality shirt that would last for years. How did this shift in principles come about?

The most obvious people to blame are the fashion designers (or their imitators) and the advertisers. Individuals without much money to spend on clothes do not like to be seen in the same blue shirt on each occasion, they would rather have several colours, but perhaps these individuals do not realize the difference in the quality.

The quality of one’s clothing is vital as most women and about half as many men know. First impressions count and bright and cheerful (but cheap) is not as impressive to those who know the difference as quality.

To those people who say that the person should count over the clothing, I would say ‘Yes, in a perfect world. One day, but it is not the way it works now’. Why do people dress up for a date, and especially the first date? Why do people dress up for an interview? And why do individuals dress up to go to court?

It is because clothing matters and first impressions count and deep down, we all know it even though most of us wish that it did not matter so much.

First of all, it is important to find a style that suits you. Then you should purchase pieces of clothing that are good examples of that style. They will not be cheap, but is a Hell’s Angel’s leather jacket cheap? Absolutely not. Whatever niche you think you fit into or would like to fit into, buy the appropriate clothing to stand out for quality.

I am not saying that people have to dress appropriate to their age group, I am saying that people should dress appropriate to the upper echelons of their niche group. If you would like to become a Hell’s Angel, get one of the best leather jackets and if you want to work in an office, buy yourself a good suit. Just because you cannot tell the difference between a cheap one and a decent one does not mean that your peers cannot as well.

You just have so much scope to modify your physical appearance, but you can still make a big impression by wearing quality clothing like a decent overcoat, a decent suit, a good cardigan or a decent shirt. The people who know the difference will notice and it will not damage your prospects.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on a number of subjects, but is now concerned with the jean jacket. If you would like to know more, please visit our web site at Mens Overcoats For Sale.

What Are Children’s Toy Telescopes?

If you would like to give a child an educational toy and you want to encourage an interest in science, then a telescope is a good choice. Naturally, telescopes come in numerous different strengths and sizes and for equally as many purposes.

Telescopes can be used for observing relatively short distances or for observing the stars. In fact, the term ‘children’s toy telescopes’ is a misnomer, because each single telescope is an aid to examination, whatever it is used for.

One of the most obvious uses for children’s toy telescopes is the observation of celestial bodies. Children like to observe the stars, other planets in our solar system and our moon and that interest can either be short-lived or it can lead to a life-long interest or even a career. This is the power of educational toys and this is the power that giving educational toys gives bearers of gifts.

Relatives have the power to empower a child by giving it an educational gift rather than a toy gun. A child’s personality will out, but if it has ‘blank spots’, it cannot invent them. Just think of how many boys follow in their father’s profession or how many girls do what their mothers did.

Educational toys like children’s toy telescopes can spur a child on into a realm of interest that even its parents do not know about. Most individuals have never looked at the Moon ‘close up’, that is through a telescope, leave alone looking at Saturn or Mars through a telescope. Empowering our children to do so is to widen their scope.

A telescope is a telescope is a telescope. There is no such item as children’s toy telescopes because all there are are powerful and less powerful telescopes and every telescope, no matter what its strength, affords better visual detail than the naked eye.

A telescope can get used for observing the stars, distant shipping or animals. Especially shy animals like deer or birds or dangerous animals like big cats or bears.

There are numerous places that you can go searching for children’s toy telescopes. Most small towns do not have stores specializing in telescopes, but you can often buy a bargain telescope from a second-hand shop or a pawn shop, because the fact is that not each child will be fascinated by a telescope. Some, even many, perhaps, will be bored by a telescope within a couple of months.

This is to be expected. However, at least those kids had the opportunity and no-one can say that you did not encourage them. The fact that not each child is interested in children’s toy telescopes is not a good reason for not giving one.

The fact is that there are numerous sorts of educational toys ranging from Lego to Meccano to chemistry sets, but a telescope is up there with the best of them. If you give a gift of a telescope, you can at least know that you have done your part to encourage the child to seek more knowledge.

Buddhism And The Main Buddhist Sects

Following Buddha’s death in 483 BC, his closest followers (his disciple monks) took time off their preaching to compile his sermons (sutras) and his regulations (vinayas). In the old convention of Buddha, monks initially walked the countryside preaching and teaching for nine months of the year and went to sit out the monsoon period in a retreat for three months.

These retreats became monasteries and temples. This withdrawal into monasteries was important in the development of various interpretations of Buddha’s doctrines and in due course led to the formation of different sects which gained popularity in different parts of Asia.

There are three foremost Buddhist sects: Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana or Tantric Buddism.

Theravada Buddhism is the principal sect in Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand and is the sect that stays most faithful to Buddha’s original teachings. Theravada Buddhism teaches that the path to the attainment of personal Nirvana is the aim of life. It is a very individualistic religion in that everybody is alone on their own path to enlightenment.

Mahayana Buddism grew into the largest sect and spread along the Silk Road from India through China to east Asia beginning in about 200 BC. Mahayana Buddhists worship Buddha and the Buddhist saints (bodhisattvas – meaning ‘wisdom beings’).

Bodhisattvas are beings that restrain themselves from attaining Nirvana (and therefore leaving the wheel of life or cycle of birth, death and reincarnation) so that they may help others achieve Nirvana, which is a major difference between it and Theravada Buddhism.

Mahayana Buddhism is more readily absorbed by different cultures than the other forms which accounts for it having spread so far. The Buddhist emperor Ashoka (272-232 BC) gave Mahayana a huge boost in popularity by despatching missionaries to Sri Lanka, south-east Asia and China from where it was taken to Korea and Japan in the Sixth Century anno domini.

Zen Buddhism grew in popularity in Japan and China in the Seventh Century. Zen Buddhism is a variant of Mahayana Buddhism and teaches that Nirvana can be achieved through mental conditioning and meditation.

Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism arose in the Seventh Century as well and is most common in Tibet and Mongolia. Vajrayana Buddhism tries to identify the initiate with a visualized deity. Tantric cannon includes esoteric writings, teaching that meditation can engage the mind by the use of mantras (chants), mudras (hand gestures) and mandalas (visible icons). The Dalai Lama is the spiritual and temporal head of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhists.

Buddhism reached its height of popularity in China during the T’ang dynasty in the Ninth Century, when it was partially suppressed by royal command. Likewise Zen attained its height of popularity in the Nineteen Century when the Japanese royal family switched to Shintoism taking many of the royal hangers-on with it. Buddhism declined in India as well in the Eighth Century because lots of its concepts were absorbed into Hinduism. Buddism was to all intents and purposes extinct in India by the Thirteenth Century.

Hot Tub Improvements Over The Years

Hut tubs have been commercially available for about 50 years, so you can guess that the technology has come a long way. In the early days, hot tubs were normally merely a small round wooden tub that was bursting at the seams with over two people in it. They were invariably round in shape and there was very little choice.

The first hot tubs to appear in the States were seen in the 1940′s, but they were usually little more that than wooden barrels filled with hot water intended to give a long deep soak. In the 1950′s, the idea grew and families began to make or buy hot tubs in order to relax and to alleviate the indications of arthritis. By the mid 1960′s, individuals were adding home-made heaters and pumps and very basic versions of the contemporary wooden hot tub were being born.

One early innovator was Roy Jacuzzi who invented and marketed the first hot tub that incorporated swirling water and jets. This whirlpool bath literally began the whole industry in 1968. In the early 1970′s, manufacturers began to incorporate stronger jets into their hot tubs and some manufacturers started constructing more comfortable designs out of fibreglass and acrylic. The business was taking off big time.

Jacuzzi started to produce bigger models so that friends or a family could all enjoy the experience together. Most of the modernizations since the late 1970′s have been technical, but these technical improvements have been quite serious.

The filters are more easily accessible these days which means that they are more likely to be cleaned as often as they ought to be in order to avoid the build up of bacteria from rotting vegetation and hair. This will pollute the water and could pose a health hazard. Not only that, but clogged filters means that the pump has to work harder to circulate the water which means more wear and tear and eventually, more cost.

There is a better choice of materials and colours nowadays. Before, the option was: what sort of wood do you want? Now you can still have that choice, plus the choice of any colour acrylic you want as well. Or you can have an acrylic tub inside a wooden (or synthetic timber) exterior or skirt.

The benefits of the synthetic materials are that they last longer, are easier to clean and can be impregnated with a product that kills or wards off bacteria and mould.

The seating arrangement can be personalized in contemporary spas to suit individual bathers. Every seat might have one or more directable jets and the seat itself might be made to a specific height for a certain person or for a certain injury or condition.

The water heating arrangements are a great deal more adaptable as well. Nowadays, the water can be warmed by gas, electricity, your homes central heating system or by solar power, which is a huge improvement if you live in a country that enjoys a great deal of sun.

To top it all off, you can add aromatherapy oils and spa salt crystals to the water by placing them in a draw like in a washing machine and have them circulated in the water evenly.

Contact Lenses Versus Specs

Has your eyesight deteriorated to the point where you have to wear specs? Are you happy about that? Well, there are several alternatives to be had these days, so you do have other choices. If you do not want to undergo surgery, you can still opt for contact lenses. In fact, contact lenses have been a viable alternative to glasses for decades.

Surgery can be a more permanent solution to problems with eyesight, but for various reasons, some people do not want to take up this option. This leaves contact lenses as the best alternative. The first thing to notice about contact lenses is that most people will not know that you are wearing them. This is very important to some people and not significant to others at all.

Contact lenses provide better all-round or peripheral vision than spectacles. When you look to the side wearing glasses, there is no glass there, but contact lenses cover your entire pupil so that your vision is closer to normal. This is safer if you are driving a car or riding a bike or even trying to cross a road.

Another difficulty that numerous people find with spectacles is that they leave indentations on the nose. Some people find these ugly. Glasses also need frequent cleaning, which many people find maddening, whereas contact lenses are cleaned by the eyes’ normal cleaning system – in other words, automatically.

Stylists also think that their prescription spectacles have to go with what they are wearing. This can mean that you have to have a dozen pairs of glasses. If your eyesight deteriorates further, which is fairly probable, all those specs will have to be up-graded as well. This is not true with contact lenses of course.

Both spectacles and contact lenses can adjust for astigmatism or bad eyesight, which comes to most people after the age of forty. Occasionally earlier and sometimes later, but it will happen. Your choice, if you do not want to undergo surgery, is whether you would rather wear spectacles or contact lenses.

In the past, contact lenses were very expensive, which is why many people still discount using them, but in fact it is no longer true. Contact lenses are more costly, but not much more now. In fact, you can buy disposable contact lenses and many people do do that.

The fact is that there are better alternatives to wearing either contacts or specs, but most people do not know it. It is possible these days to have one eye operation and never have to wear glasses again. Or you could have laser surgery and almost certainly not need specs again for ten or twenty years, but some people are adverse to having surgery and so they opt for glasses or contacts.

In the long run, surgery is almost definitely less expensive than wearing contact lenses and wearing contact lenses is almost definitely cheaper than wearing glasses, but it is the same with most items, people just look at the up-front costs and cheaper is rarely better.

Lego An Ageless Toy For Children Of All Ages

Lego sets have come a long way since my brothers and I had Lego sets in the UK. Lego UK is an off-shoot of the original Danish firm called Lego, however, Lego UK may just as well be considered a separate company in its own right. These days Lego sets are a lot more than merely boxes of interlocking building blocks, Lego sets are themed now to make them more relevant to a child’s particular interests. Lego is seeing a resurgence.

The name ‘Lego’ is not a real word, not even in Danish. Rather it is an acronym of two Danish words “leg godt”, which mean “play well”. It is Lego Group’s name and part of the logo of the Lego Group.

The Lego Group was the brain child of Ole Kirk Kristiansen in 1932 and the Lego company has remained in the Kristiansen family’s control until today. The current owner of the Lego Group is Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the company’s founder.

Lego’s mission statement is the same the whole Lego Group worldwide and that is to:

?Inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow?

Lego UK explains this by stating that their essential objective is ‘to inspire and develop children to think creatively, reason systematically and release their potential to shape their own future – experiencing the endless human possibility’.

The Lego Group now has more than 130 subsidiaries and branches all over the world, one of which is Lego UK. From its humble beginnings in a small Danish carpentry workshop in Bilund, the Lego Group has evolved into the fifth largest toy manufacturer in the world, although it is still headquartered in Bilund.

The fundamental building block of the Lego Group is the famous eight-stud Lego block, which has remained unchanged since 1958. In fact, it is unlikely to ever change since it has been calculated that there are over 900 million different methods of mixing just six of these blocks together.

Over 900 million different methods of mixing merely six Lego building blocks of one size and one colour! Think about the possibilities if you give a child a box of Lego building blocks of different sizes and colours.

Lego takes education very seriously and since the Seventies, the Lego Group has extended its product assortment to include younger and older individuals, The Duplo block is for pre-school children and are substantial enough for small hands to manipulate and too substantial to swallow.

For older children, teenagers and adults, there are electric motors that can be built into models which can be controlled by computer. One famous British TV presenter contacted Lego for help in making a house from Lego to live in.

In fact, this full-size, twenty foot tall, house was built by 1,000 volunteers using 3,300,000 bricks and everything is made from Lego building blocks. Yes, everything, including a flushing toilet, a sink with taps, the cat and the bread bin.

Tell Me About Sleep Apnea

I wouldn?t bother so much having my bed partner lie on the sofa in the living room snoring, as I would if he suffered from sleep apnea, a more serious and harmful disorder. This breathing disorder during sleep that is followed by intermittent and shallow breathing can be treated easily if it is found out in time and not mistaken for normal snoring.

Hence it is best to understand what sleep apnea and its indications are, so we can help a loved one that is suffering from the disorder of sleep apnea.

You have to know that untreated sleep apnea could hinder you having good sleep at night and make you feel tired, fatigued, mentally exhausted and least productive on the following day. The breathing pauses could last anywhere between 10 to 20 seconds, occur up to 100 times on the same night. This would reduce the quantity of the deep natural sleep that is essential for the body to function properly physically and mentally during the daytime.

Most of us know the implications of not having a sound night?s sleep and this is no exception for a person with sleep apnea. He/she would suffer from chronic daytime sleepiness, loss of concentration and slow reflexes that could make one have higher risks for accidents.

In addition the long-term results of sleep apnea are grave health disorders like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and weight gain.

Look out for symptoms of sleep apnea like loud and constant snoring, choking, gasping, snorting in sleep and long interruptions in breathing. In addition observe if he/she feels tired and sleepy during the day even after protracted hours of sleep at night.

In addition, look out for dry mouth or sore throat on waking up, morning headaches, restiveness, insomnia, grumpiness, bad temper or even depression. Waking up feeling restless, forgetful, with a lack of concentration power and recurrent trips to the toilet at night could be other indications.

On observing these symptoms consult a specialist. He/she will prescribe an overnight stay in a hospital to observe and diagnose sleep apnea. It is best to know that just snoring or some of these indications does not lead to a diagnosis of sleep apnea.

Snoring could be just normal and it does not interfere with the quality and amount of sleep and make one feel chronically tired, sleepy or lack of concentration, all of which could result in accidents. However the onus of diagnosing lies with the specialist.

It is best to take into account that sleep apnea could be of various types. In an episode of obstructive sleep apnea, the soft tissues on the back of the throat relax and obstruct oxygen from entering the lungs during sleep and it causes a brief disturbance of sleep.

However, central sleep apnea is less well-known but more serious and occurs when the brain fails to signal the breath regulating muscles to breathe and this could make one aware than one has woken up. The most serious of sleep apneas is the combination of both these apnea known as complex sleep apnea.

Believe me, sleep apnea could be easily found out in the initial stages with your bed partner?s help. A sleep diary would help him/her record your snoring, gasping, choking, or other uncommon sounds. In addition a video recording of the patient would help you note symptoms of sleep apnea.

How To Profit From Anime Toys

Are you an anime toy collector or do you only comprehend how popular they are? Well, the fact is that because they are so well-liked with both children and collectors alike, some individuals are making a lovely living out of trading anime toys both on and off line. Making money from your hobby is both fun and fairly easy, if you know what you are doing. It is definitely possible for you to profit from them as well.

There are prerequisites to making money from any hobby so trading in anime toys is no exception. You have to really immerse yourself in the toys and know which ones are hard to acquire and which ones are the most well-liked with enthusiasts. You can acquire this information by reading, yet to be truthful, if you do not already know it, you are almost certainly not interested enough.

If you are not au fait with anime toys, try applying these principles to what you are interested in. Anyway, getting back to anime. There are comics, books and films that you should become familiar with before you can have enough information to begin trading. You have to know the characters and even their personalities.

The easiest manner to start is if you sell what you already have. If you have looked after them, they could be worth quite a lot of money otherwise they will attract a reduced price. This is not necessarily a problem. Sell all your old tat but use that money to buy the most well-liked figures of anime toys that you can afford, but buy it ‘as new’ and boxed in its original carton.

The top collectors will only purchase ‘new unused’ in its original packaging, so this is the level that you have to aim for. Anything that is second best, unless it is very rare is a waste of time and is just good enough for children to play with. Real collectors only invest in the best – think of coins and stamps.

By selling off your old anime toys, you can achieve a couple of objectives: you will be ‘clearing the decks’ but also furnishing yourself with start-up capital. Frequently, it is a lack of start up capital that stops people from ‘having a go’. If it does not cost you anything other than your old toys, which I am sure you will have already grown out of, if you are thinking about dealing in them, you will not be speculating with your own money really.

The way to start is to sell your old stuff in order to acquire start up capital and then use your specialist knowledge to purchase anime toys that are only in the very best state. Then you work your way up the ladder until you are buying ang selling off line locally or further afield at toy fayres but also on line, say on eBay, in only the very best examples of anime toys. Stick with it and you can make money, if you are passionate about your subject.

Train Tours from San Francisco

One of the best things about staying in San Francisco is the close proximity to some incredible attractions. You can lodge in one city yet visit several. You get not only the conveniences of the city, but the splendor of nature is not far away from almost any spot within the city. In fact, a short train ride will take you quickly to some nearby attractions that are definitely worth checking out.

One of the first train tours I want to mention is not only a train trip but a bus and train tour. This trip goes from San Francisco to Yosemite Park. This trip requires transfers back and forth from bus to train but offers some beautiful scenery and the ability to get pleasure from it without the worry of driving, rest stops and the need to stretch your legs.

Sometimes a little inconvenience is worth a lot more convenience later in your excursion. The train segment of the trip lasts about three hours and you get to spend three hours in Yosemite. For some it is not worth the hassle and for others it is just what the doctor ordered – time to rest and relax while on the way. This is by far the most complicated of the train tours heading out of San Francisco.

The second tour is to wine country. The beauty of these tours is in the fact that you can enjoy your wine tasting event without the anxiety of who is going to drive. Everyone in your group can enjoy the outing equally. Even more than that however, is that many tour groups have made the train ride itself more the event than the wine tasting.

With offerings such as four course meals and Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre for your enjoyment it is no wonder that this has turned out to be an event of choice for many visitors to San Francisco. While this may be a more than moderately pricey option, it is well worth the expense. You can always cut costs elsewhere in San Francisco to make up for the expenditure.

Roaring Camp Railroads provides two train rides that are both equally tempting in hugely different ways. The first is a trip back in time. This is almost certainly my favorite. On this excursion you travel to the top of Bear Mountain while listening to yarns about Roaring Camp’s part. This train tour lasts for an hour and is great fun, particularly for the little ones.

The second event by Roaring Camp Railroads is the Beach Train, which will take you to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The round excursion from Roaring Camp to Santa Cruz and back is about three hours and well worth every penny if you have a budding engineer among your children.

Perhaps the most magical of train excursions is the Christmas Train tour from Oakdale. This trip includes Santa, his elves and a little Christmas magic. What more could you ask for? Well, I suppose that that depends on whether you made the naughty list or the nice list. This train ride is magic for everyone that joins it, young and old alike will get pleasure from the magic that only Christmas can bring.

Whether you are a big kid, a little kid, or somewhere in between, I am ready to bet that the magic of a train ride has not been completely lost over the years. In fact, I am willing to bet that if you allow yourself to sit back and just enjoy yourself, you will enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Children Who Sleepwalk

Sleepwalking or somnambulance is a bizarre sleep disorder that affects up to fourteen percent of children at some time before they are teenagers. Around a quarter of them will experience more than one episode of sleepwalking. For some reason, more boys than girls sleepwalk but most somnambulists grow out of the problem before they become teenagers.

Sleepwalking is in fact a brain disorder as well as a sleep disorder, but it is a brain disorder of the nervous system which usually corrects itself as the sufferer matures. By way of explanation, usually, when people wake up, the whole body and whole brain wake up together, whereas with sleepwalkers, the mobility part of the brain and the body wakes up, but the cognitive/awareness part of the brain stays asleep, at least for a while.

At least that is one explanation, because as with so many things to do with the brain, no one actually knows, all that can be agreed by everyone, is that the child is still in a deep sleep when it is wandering about.

Whilst the child is wandering around, the eyes are open, but the face seems extraordinarily impassive. The child can see but still trips or stumbles and still bumps into items. Normally, the child will not pay attention to a conversation or react to hearing its name.

The most common time for an bout of sleepwalking to take place is within the first two hours of sleep. The periods of somnambulance normally last from fifteen minutes to two hours and the sleepwalker may get dressed and go outside.

Although it is wise to bring this condition to your doctor’s attention, no remedy is normally necessary other than putting better security on all external doors and locking windows at low level to thwart the child from leaving the house.

They normally grow out of sleepwalking sooner or later. If you child sleepwalks, all you should do is guide it back to bed without waking it up unnecessarily. It is not risky to wake up a sleepwalker, but not necessary either.

Roughly one percent of adults sleepwalk too, and this one percent are not inevitably the ones who sleepwalked as children. Adult sleepwalking usually has other more mundane causes such as stress, anxiety and sleeplessness or even some medical conditions such as epilepsy. When the cause goes away so does the sleepwalking.

Treatments differ considerably relying on the severity of the ‘sleepwalk’. Does the sufferer merely go down and sit in the living room or does the sufferer open the door and go outside where there is heavy traffic? Hypnotism is one treatment.

There are other safety measures that people living with sleepwalkers can or perhaps should take. Because sleepwalkers are prone to bumping into items, make certain there is nothing projecting anywhere that could poke them in the eye. Hang bells or wind chimes in places where they tend to go and on doors that they use in order to alert you that they are on the move.

Lock certain doors with deadbolts and take the key out and finally make certain that all low-level glass is toughed and covered by curtains at night so that they do not attempt to walk through them without first opening them.

Ways Of Fundraising For Schools

Many schools have to engage in fund raising because of a shortfall in government funding. This shortage of sufficient government funding will just get worse given the cutbacks that the governments of the world have seen fit to impose in order to help put an end to the financial crisis caused by the collapse of so numerous financial institutions.

It is commonly called the banking crisis and it is being used as an excuse for slashing the funding of government departments like schooling and health care. You will be able to judge how difficult your local schools have been hit by the amount of school fund raising in your region.

A conventional method of school fund raising is the selling of goods from a catalogue from door to door. Typically, school children are given the catalogues to take home and to take around their neighbours. Those who sell the most often win prizes.

The season of school fund raising usually begins when the kids go back to school in the autumn after the summer break. If the schools in your area have been badly hit by the cutbacks, you might have dozens of kids knocking on your door trying to sell you over-priced knick-knacks.

However, some schools endeavor to be more imaginative in their fund raising, because fewer and fewer people are prepared to pay way over the top for emergency plugs, wrapping paper and scissors.

Some of these innovative ideas include selling sandwiches, pizzas, hot dogs, barbecued chicken and cookie dough. Other ways are to hold a bring and buy sale or a fayre with sideshows, stalls, bingo and a bouncy house. Raffles are also popular methods of raising money for schools as long as the prizes are worth winning.

Although school fund raising is a nuisance for parents, it is a necessary evil, if the school is to meet its responsibility to provide children with a decent education. One good method of raising money is to publish a monthly school magazine. Kids and teachers can write pieces and stories for the magazine and a committee of students and teachers could edit and compile it.

It is a decent idea if the head teacher gives a report in each issue. Local businesses can be approached to buy marketing space and the magazine can be sold for a small amount. This will provide a regular and fairly stable monthly income and every parent will want one as will other individuals who live in the environs of the school.

The difficulty of underfunding is a big one and it will not be going away any time soon, however, families are suffering from the financial squeeze as well so schools should shift their focus while trying to raise money. People definitely do not like to feel obliged to purchase over-priced rubbish because it is children who are flogging it – it is a form of moral blackmail.

The best way to raise money for schools is to provide value for money. So, if you have to organize school fund raising, give out catalogues by all means, but make them decent ones or make your own in conjunction with a large, local department store; put on a Christmas pantomime, nativity play or/and carol service; in the warmer months organize public events like bazaars, fayres and bring and buy sales and publish a monthly school magazine all the way through the year.

How Should I Go Shopping Online For An Air Purifier?

Have you come to the conclusion that you want an air purifier for your home? You may think it is a good idea if the air in your home is ‘unclean’ in any way or even if it is damp and mildewy. There are many reasons why a home and its residents can benefit from an air purifier especially if you live on a main road or near a factory. Too many hairy pets can also be a cause of allergies which can be cleaned up by the use of an air purifier.

If you do make a decision to buy one, there are several different sorts to choose from and various price levels. You can also shop on or off line. In fact, the cost of these devices is frequently lower on line because the vendor does not have the overheads of a bricks and mortar shop front, although you will have to remember to add postage and package and any local taxes that might be appropriate. It is still usually cheaper to buy on line rather than in the shopping mall.

However, both methods of shopping have their advantages and disadvantages, so we will take a closer look at these next. Really what you need to do is compare both methods of shopping and see which is best for you. The way that I do that is by going on line and typing something like ‘air purifiers for sale’ into a search engine.

The results that come up will be numerous, probably well over 100,000, so pick a dozen or so and do some research. Amazon is normally a good place to read users’ reviews. Make notes on brand names, prices, functions and capabilities. Then take these notes to the Mall and go looking for air purifiers.

With your newly found information of these devices, you can question sales personnel and compare prices. Write more notes and do some comparisons.

Do not forget to add postage and packing and local taxes to the on line prices. Another item that you should consider is the warranty. What occurs if the purifier breaks down? Will you have to send it hundreds of miles away to be repaired? Who will pay for that?

It is always easier to claim on a warranty if it can be done locally. However, what are the chances of it breaking down anyway? It depends on the length of the guarantee actually.

Some of the functions that you should come across whilst researching your prospective air purifier are whether it uses an air filter or not, whether it can cool air or not and whether it can dehumidify or not. These three features are convenient for different conditions, but there is no point paying for something that you will never use – the dehumidifier for instance.

Some individuals prefer a device that does not require an air filter or which has a washable filter, but this is normally because of laziness and false economy. There are numerous different kinds of filters for different pollutants so they are more flexible and ultimately far better.

How Sleep Apnea Can Slow Down Your Life

Sleep Apnea, if you have this health difficulty, then you already know the symptoms and how it affects your everyday life. If, on the other hand, you have merely heard of sleep apnea, but do not know what it is, let me share with you what the indications are and how you can treat this sleeping problem at home.

When an individual is not able to sleep without interruption at night, this can be irritating and frightening. Breathing is what everyone does, day in and day out. If someone is sleeping, and they stop their regular routine of breathing, this is called sleep apnea. Newborns, at times, forget to breathe and they as well have bouts of sleep apnea.

That is why it is vital for a nurse or parent to watch their newborn whilst sleeping. Not being able to breathe whilst sleeping, whether a newborn or adult, will cut off oxygen to the brain and might cause irreversible injury. Even if breathing only stops for ten or more seconds.

There are a variety of methods to recognize sleep apnea in a person. One way is how an individual sleeps at night or if they feel the need to sleep in the daytime. As it turns out, snoring is a kind of apnea and if all you want to do is sleep during the daytime, this is a cause for apprehension because one way or another oxygen is being cut off from the brain.

Along with these two obvious indications, an individual wakes up with headaches which never happened before, not being able to remember the simplest of items, along with concentrating at work or play.

If you think apnea is something you are struggling with, it is vital to see a physician straight away. This is not the easiest health issue to pinpoint.

Being healthy is everybody?s aim and since breathing is something carried out daily, without thinking of it, the moment breathing is disrupted is the time to get in touch with your GP.

When you see your doctor, they should be asking you about the symptoms above, along with asking if you are going through depression and mood swings. Now, your GP may prescribe such tactics as sleeping on your side, instead of your back and taking various decongestants.

These are ways to stop sleep apnea for those with a mild case. On the other hand, if the apnea is more severe, a sleeping mask will be something to think about using in order to keep oxygen going to the brain.

One thing a person suffering from sleep apnea must not do is take sleeping pills. Sleeping tablets will cause even more breathing issues. Although, taking homeopathic supplements or burning an aromatherapy scent in your home will permit you to relax and make it easier for a person to sleep at night. These are known as non prescriptive ways to cure sleep apnea or at least relax.

Just bear in mind that the indications above are serious and if they are something you are feeling, please get in touch with your physician. These indications are not to be taken lightly.

Finally, if you are smoking, this as well you ought to stop. There is a connection between sleep apnea and smoking as inhaling smoke is not the best thing for the respiratory system.

How To Find Bargain Antiques

Most people like antiques because of the style and nostalgia they they evoke. Antiques also have a high perceived worth. However, this high perceived worth discourages many individuals from searching for them and collecting them. This is a pity because not all antiques are expensive. Valuation is difficult though unless one is in the antiques trade either by profession or by hobby / interest.

Comparison is not usually an option either if you see an antique that you like. For example, if you saw a candlestick telephone from 1920 on sale in a car boot sale, it is not likely that you will find others to compare it with. Is it worth $20, $50, $100 or more? It is very hard to tell, so the only thing is to ask yourself: what is it worth to me? How much money am I prepared to part with to own it?

Once you have the item, you can take it to an antique dealer and get a valuation so that next time you see one, you will have a better understanding. This might seem like an expensive way of learning, but you do end up with a collection of things that you like.

If you are starting to take an interest in antiques, it is a good idea to check out the reputations of some local dealers and then foster the friendship of a couple of the better ones. Spend time in their stores, purchase things that you like, sell items that you have found, but do not want for your collection and invite friends to go to the shop with you.

Smaller antique stores and second-hand stores that are run by a family are the best type to concentrate on because you can found relationships with individuals who count in that shop.

Employees tend to know less and have less remit to negotiate prices. The owner will also almost certainly have bought the item him- or herself, so they will know some of the history (or provenance) of it.

One way of getting a discount is to pay with cash. There are certain costs attached to paying with credit cards and cheques, but antique stores and second-hand shops like cash transactions because they are less visible.

In the world of antiques almost everything is second-hand and as such it will have been used. ‘Used’ equals worn, so look out for wear and tear. The more perfect the item is, the nearer to its top market value it will get.

Therefore, it is up to you to ascertain the real condition of something before you purchase it. You can hardly ever complain the following day that you did not notice a scratch or crack and expect your money back.

If you are going to concentrate on a specialist field, say, antique telephones, you can get handbooks on antique telephones. Read it, study it and carry it around with you. Immerse yourself in it and do not move on to studying another issue until you are self-confident in your chosen area. Then take in an associated field like telephone accessories.

Contact Lens And Glasses: Eye Tests

Before you can buy contact lenses, or spectacles either for that matter, you will need to submit yourself to an eye test. However, the eye test for contact lenses is a little more detailed than a test for regular specs, so you ought to tell the optometrist which type of lens you want before the test starts in order to save time.

An eye test will usually start with a physical examination of your eyes for signs of eye disease such as cataracts and glaucoma or general worries such as high blood pressure or diabetes. This is why it is so vital to have an eye test at least every two years, because a physician does not give scheduled checks for cataracts, diabetes or glaucoma, the three of which can turn you blind.

Your optometrist might pose other questions too such as why you would prefer to have contact lenses rather than specs and whether you have had any problems with your eyes. The decision to wear contact lenses or spectacles is entirely yours, although in some countries spectacles may be free whereas there might be a charge for contact lenses because they are more expensive.

The results of the optometrist’s test will yield a set of numbers which will tell an optician the strength of the lens required for each eye as the lens required for each eye is usually different. This is commonly referred to as your prescription. Then you take this prescription to an optician to pick your spectacle frames, if you are having spectacles, and to have your lenses made or and installed.

In the case of specs, lenses will either have to be cut or and adjusted for the frames that you want and in the case of contact lenses, you might have to have the lenses manufactured. In either case, you might be lucky enough to walk out of the shop wearing your glasses or contacts or you may have to return in a few hours or even a couple days. No optician worth his salt will sell you expensive lenses without a prescription.

There is an clear vital difference between glasses and contact lenses – contacts have to make contact with your eyeballs and not all eyeballs are exactly the same shape. Therefore, if you would like contacts, the optometrist will have to measure the exact curvature or the exact contours of your eyes and this will be part of your prescription. Some eyes are naturally drier than others and this can have an effect on the sort of contact lenses that you should purchase.

Your optician will then frequently give you a pair of trial contact lenses and require you to return a few days later for further tests. You may have to wear a number of types of contacts before you find a type or marque that suits your particular eyes and sight.

Once you have contacts that appear to suit, you will have to follow the instructions and advice that comes with them and return for your check-ups when you are told to. These follow-ups are important to make sure that the contact lenses are not aggravating your eyes or causing more serious issues.

Stopping Smoking Cigarettes

Smoking cigarettes used to be a great deal more popular than it is today. Now most smokers are looking for methods of stopping smoking. This is because smokers and the general public at large are more conscious of the dangers of smoking cigarettes these days.

Just look at films manufactured in the Sixties and before, everyone is smoking. It shows how common smoking was compared with today. This would not be possible now as you may not smoke in public places, on public transport, in restaurants or in bars any more in most Western countries and elsewhere too.

The problem with smoking is that not only the smoker suffers, so does everyone around about the smoker. This is known as passive smoking and it has an effect on those working or living with smokers – a barmaid or a spouse for example. So, all these individuals are endangering their health so that tobacco firms can become richer.

No matter how long someone has been smoking, it is possible to quit the habit. Anyone who has stopped smoking will tell you that stopping smoking cigarettes is all to do with the mind. You really have to desire to stop smoking or you will not do it successfully.

People have different ways of stopping smoking cigarettes. Some say that nicotine patches or nicotine gum help, because you can wean yourself off nicotine gradually without having to inhale the poisonous smoke of cigarettes. Nicotine is extremely addictive and most of the chemical withdrawal symptoms have to do with the shortage of nicotine in the body.

Most individuals find that the single effective way of stopping smoking cigarettes is to stop smoking dead – in one go. It is very hard to cut down or to switch to a weaker brand. You are still inhaling poisonous smoke. It is still no good to you or anyone about you.

Cutting down or switching brands is not effective, because you will still smoke other smokers’ and you will still be in a smokers’ environment. You will also find yourself smoking tomorrow’s five cigarettes today, swearing not to smoke any the next day. That never works. You have to stop smoking dead.

There are a number of situations that can provide the motivation to quit smoking cigarettes. Illness is usually high on the list. A few years ago two friends of mine who smoked heavily stopped smoking cigarettes within weeks of each other.

One was in his sixties and had smoked for almost sixty years: he was told that his lungs were starting to go, but that if he stopped smoking, the shock may kill him. He quit smoking one morning and survived, but what a dilemma!

The other was in his fifties and drove a great deal as a travelling salesman. The doctor told him that he would probably have to have a leg removed next year, if he did not give up smoking and that the other may go a year or so after that. He stopped smoking instantly and still has both legs.

So it seems that the trick to stopping smoking cigarettes successfully is to find your motivation (do you want to live long enough to see the grandchildren married?) and bear that image in front of you at all times. Take nicotine substitutes if you have to and stay away from environments where individuals smoke more, like pubs.Join a sports club instead, something like tennis, table tennis, swimming or even chess.

Illnesses That Can Instigate A Sleep Disorder

We all know that having a cold can give you restless nights, but there are other more serious illnesses that can cause sleeplessness as well. However, it is not only the illnesses themselves but the medications as well can cause restless nights. Some of the most prevalent diseases that can result in an interruption of sleep are: arthritis, kidney disease, mental illness, acid reflux, diabetes, thyroid problems and neurological disorders.

Some types of heart disease can also affect sleep patterns. For instance congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease. These concerns will naturally put the patient under fairly strict medical supervision.

Sufferers of the two heart diseases mentioned above run a high risk of developing obstructive sleep apnoea. Obstructive sleep apnoea is a less serious disease than any heart disease, but it can have significant consequences too, including elevated blood pressure, which makes it difficult if it is not treated.

The difficulty with obstructive sleep apnoea is that sufferers are usually the last to know about it, because it does not really cause the sufferer any distress although it can still have dire consequences.

The only real remedy for obstructive sleep apnoea is either the loss of weight which is not simple for heart patients or the wearing of an oxygen mask at night, which is called CPAP.

Diabetes can result in Restless Leg Syndrome, which involves the involuntary thrashing about of the legs during sleep. This leads to a very restless night for both the sufferer and the partner as the kicks can be fairly violent – certainly enough to kick a football. Thyroid issues can lead to nocturnal sweating which can make the sufferer feel hot, damp and unpleasant

Neurological disorders like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s epilepsy and strokes can make the sufferer have problems with REM sleep and insomnia. Those who have had a stroke may also suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea.

Sufferers of asthma and other respiratory diseases will have concerns sleeping. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will cause insomnia and sleep fragmentation.

Mental health problems such as depression, SAD’s and anxiety also lead to sleep disorders – normally also those of sleep fragmentation and insomnia.

GERD and acid reflux cause a burning sensation in the abdomen whilst the sufferer lies down, making it very difficult to sleep during an attack. There are tablets for this that are occasionally effective and raising the head a couple of inches can help as well.

Kidney disease can also cause restless leg syndrome and people with arthritis have difficulty getting to sleep because of the pain.

The point about all these causes of a restless night is that it is the underlying cause that is more serious than the consequence – that is, the sleeplessness. These are serious conditions, some of which can be cured. Once the main illness is solved the secondary one will disappear as well.
