What Is Wavefront Technology In Lasik?

Lasik surgery has hugely improved the vision of millions of individuals worldwide. It has turned the visually impaired into sighted individuals who are capable of seeing their children again and contributing to the family’s income by working. Two items that millions considered they would never be able to do again.

However, Lasik eye surgery has not been sitting on its laurels. Far from it, Lasik surgery techniques are being improved all the time. One such enhancement is Wavefront Technology. Wavefront Technology with relation to Lasik eye surgery is used to more precisely map the patient’s eyeball, which makes more exact surgery possible.

This is of immense importance because eyeballs are not all the same shape. They are like hands, superficially they all look the same, but once you get down to particulars, they are not. There are all shapes sizes and proportions. The same is true for eyes.

The better the map of the eye, the more chance that the surgeon has of giving you the best vision they can, in relation to the precise problems that you have in your particular case. Wavefront Technology assists the surgeon accomplish this.

Wavefront Technology is actually a technology that has been adapted from astronomy. in astronomical telescopes it is crucial that the lenses are as perfect as they can be, because at high magnification, even the very slightest impairment would lead to huge distortions, which in turn would make the telescope just about useless.

Astronomers were using this technology in the 1970′s, so it was already quite advanced when some bright spark noticed that it could become adapted for use in eye surgery too. Wavefront Technology was born and taken on board by Lasik and other eye surgeons with great expectations.

In fact, the bright spark who noticed the potential value of this article of astronomical technology was a German doctor called Josef Bille who started using it in his practice.

He gradually enhanced and adapted the sensors and announced it to the Lasik manufacturers in 1997. This in turn allowed the manufacturers of Lasik equipment to adapt Wavefront Technology to their own apparatus.

Wavefront Technology is highly complicated in design and technology but also highly easy to understand. The Wavefront machine sends a flat sheet of light (known as a wavefront) through the eye to the retina, which reflects it back to the Wavefront device.

The Wavefront machine compares the two, measures the imperfections, chooses what has to be done to correct them and guides the laser to the right spot in order to accomplish the corrections. As simple as that!

However, the geniuses who created and developed Wavefront Technology did not give up there. They have their machine send in multiple wavefronts from multiple angles so that the computer can build up a three dimensional picture for even more accuracy.

There are now well over 60 patterns that can be automatically corrected by a Lasik laser guided by Wavefront Technology. So, if you have any issues with long or short sightedness, create an appointment to see your Lasik surgeon as soon as they can.

Preventing Back Injury

Back injury is very common. Not so much in children because their backs are still flexible and they get lots of exercise running around and playing, but as we become older most of give up running about and playing. Add that with the natural stiffening of joints that comes with age and back injury becomes more prevalent.

When you comprehend those easy facts, the way to avoid injury appears clearer – keep running about and playing or if you do not fancy that, take other exercises frequently. Back injury happens most frequently in the workplace, so individuals say, but what is not a workplace. Is cooking and cleaning at home not work?

Do not think that you are at far less risk at home than in the office, on the shop floor or on a construction site. Back injury is normally the result of doing something in an incorrect fashion for a long period of time – bad posture or bad technique – but it can also be caused by lifting a box onto or down from a shelf on one occasion.

The best approach is to prevent back injury ever occurring because once you have it, you will sorely regret it and have a difficult job getting rid of it. So, how do you go about preventing back injury?

Firstly, you should reduce the stress that you put on your back by normalizing your weight and by learning how to manoeuvre heavy items in the right manner and adopting right postures.

Secondly, you should attempt to strengthen the muscles in your back so that they are more cheerfully equipped to deal with the unavoidable stresses of daily life. Rather than only talking about back muscles we should include stomach muscles too.

So, starting with posture: walk tall, adopt a military bearing and do not slouch. Similarly when sitting. Do not just fall into a chair like a sack of potatoes; hold your back straight and strive not to lean to one side or the other all the time. Sit near to your desk so that you do not have to lean over to reach which might encourage slouching and rounded shoulders and back.

Learn how to sit at your desk. Your feet should be flat on the floor (or a foot stool); your thighs should be parallel with the floor. The desk or seat should be of such a height that you can place your arms on it with the forearms parallel to the floor without reaching up or slouching over. Get up and walk about for a minute or two each hour.

Your car seat should be adjusted to be right for you too, particularly if you drive a lot. Be wary of weights and bulky or awkward items. Even the shopping. Learn how to manhandle them with the minimum amount of danger. Get help if you think you might require it.take it from me, in the case of backache, prevention is far better that cure, if you can find one.

Relaxing In The Bath

Most individuals like soaking in the bath, even those individuals who say that you can not get clean in a bath. It is very relaxing, but there are some things that can increase your enjoyment of relaxing in the bath. Most of these accessories for relaxing in the bath are good for Jacuzzis. hot tubs, spas and normal baths.

The first thing that helps make a bath more relaxing is bubble bath. You ought to not use bubble bath in a hot tub – hot spa with a filter, because it can block up the filter, but bath salts are a good alternative to bubble bath. A waterproof pillow also helps you unwind in the bath.

Aromatic bath salts or bubble bath can have a very hypnotic influence, so be sure that you do not fall asleep, particularly if you are indulging in my second favourite way of relaxing in the bath. I like to have a few glasses of red wine in the bath, but in that case you have to be very careful not to fall asleep, especially if you have had a hard day.

If you are fond of a romantic bath alone or with a friend, candles are the way to go. Get the large, thick candles so that they will not burn down or fall over. Candles can be perilous if you do not place them on candle holders or loose tiles, which is why I advocate thick candles. Again they can be aromatic.

Many of people like to listen to music in the bath, but be cautious of using anything that necessitates mains power whilst you are in the water. It is better to use a battery powered or rechargeable unit for replaying your music.

If you have a spare CD player, you could build it into an outdoor hot tub and run it off the mains for the pump, but just place it out of reach of the tub. Use a remote if you need to control it. Bathing in the garden is excellent, but we can not all do that.

You can recreate an outdoor atmosphere by putting potted plants in the bathroom. Some plants do not like a lot of light, but do like a humid atmosphere. Some orchids fall into this bracket, but there must be lots of others as well – merely enquire at your garden centre.

Mirrors are sexy in the bathroom and will help the room look bigger and more full or candles and plants. The bathroom is frequently the smallest room in the house, so a couple mirrors will help create it look bigger.

If you are in a standard bath indoors in the bathroom, you could fit a bubble mat. It is like a shower mat, but it pumps air and recycles water through holes in it, making it act a little like a hot tub spa. A bath bubble mat is no surrogate for a spa, but it is better than nothing and is fairly cheap.

Power Tools And Safety Regulations

Power tools have largely taken over from hand tools all around the world, because they allow individuals to get more work done in an alloted space of time. Power tools work far more quickly than hand tools and without the operative having to expend a lot of energy having to turn a handle or push a saw.

However, the improved productivity that power tools deliver comes at a price: 1] you have to pay for the electricity that drives the equipment and 2] there is an increased risk to the operative’s health and safety. The cost of the electricity should be more than easily covered by the increased productivity, but health and safety is often overlooked until it is too late.

People seem to not comprehend the potential dangers of an inexpert person using a power tool. For example, a slip with a hand saw, usually means an ugly joint, but a slip with a power saw can cost a finger; a miss while hammering a nail home can cost a bruised finger or an ugly dent, but a slip with a nail gun can be like having a bullet in the leg.

This is why insurance companies have made it imperative for firms employing trades people to send their workers on health and safety courses. Claims from inexpert workers was becoming ludicrous as inexpert trades people gave up their old hand tool in favour of the powered alternative.

It caused a great deal of commotion in the Eighties and Nineties in the building industry among employers and employees alike to have to send people on courses about how to use power tools. In Britain, employers were not allowed to let a carpenter use a rotary saw, for instance, unless he or she could prove that they had been taught to use one. Most individuals were of the opinion that the health and safety people had gone too far.

But there were fewer accidents; less time off work due to injury and fewer claims against the insurance firms.

There was tremendous opposition in our building firm from the workforce, when we declared that nobody could sign out a power tool unless he/she had a valid safety certificate to confirm training in the use of that particular piece of apparatus.

We also had a joinery shop, where traditionally each carpenter could go to create anything he needed. Then this policy came in and only one carpenter out of forty was permitted to use the power tools. All of a sudden there was a rush to get safety certificates. The new laws had hurt people’s pride.

They thought that they were being told that they did not know their trade, but once they were disqualified from using power tools, they were made to look like inexpert apprentices again. So there was a rush to get a certificate and power tool companies would send a safety specialist to the workplace to train all the relevant tradesmen in the use of their power tools free of charge and pass out certificates.

Then our firm decided to get their ISO 9000 certificate and power tools had to be given certificates of inspection as well. So now we had to employ someone to look after the power tools.

Just tradesmen with certificates of competence could sign out a power tool and a power tool could only be signed out if it had a certificate to prove that it had been passed ‘safe to use’ within the last two months. All power tools had to have a certificate of reliability attached to it, a set of safety rules and a pair of safety glasses. That covered the firm from accusations of negligence.

That was 15-20 years ago in the building industry in the UK. I am not saying all this as a history lesson, but more to point out that people can go to a shop and buy or hire very hazardous power tools without having to establish competence. Professionals at work have to establish that they and the tools are up to the job, but the public does not.

I am not in favour of a new layer of bureaucracy, but I do want to make people aware of the danger of not knowing how to use power tools correctly and without even the most fundamental safety equipment.

Do not use power tools without safety glasses is the first rule. Shield your eyes from splinters and flying debris at all costs. A professional would, so so should you.

How To Plan A Private Party At A Day Spa

Are you thinking of holding a party? It could be a birthday party or an anniversary for yourself or a friend or it could only be because you want to have a party. Pool parties are great in the summer, but then, not everybody has a pool and it is not always summer, is it? Did you know that many spas will allow you to hold a party on their premises?

That would be great too, would it not? Having access to the heated pool, the hot spas and Jacuzzis, the steam room or saunas or Turkish bath. I am not sure that I would be keen on working out at the gym at a party though! A stomach full of cake and lemonade would not work well whilst working on your abs.

If you are keen on holding a party at a local spa, the first thing to do is find a local spa that permits the holding of private parties. This is easy enough. Most spas will have a web site which has all the facilities listed on it. So either do a search on the Internet for ‘spas in xxxxx’, where xxxxx is the name of your town or look under spas in Yellow Pages but then use the names to look for the web sites.

There are a couple of items that you have to check next, but first make a list of what facilities you want to enjoy at your party. Do you want it to be private or open to all? Do you want to let children in? Does everyone have to dress the part or can individuals (older individuals maybe) wear street clothes? Is alcohol available and can you take drinks into the jacuzzi?

Once you have your list of requirements and suitable dates, you are in a position to look for fitting locations. Once you find the nearest fit to your needs, phone them up and ask if they will permit all your needs. It may not be a problem for them.

How many people are going to be at your spa party but who is going to pay? Well, it depends on the party actually. Say a bride-to-be wants to go to the spa with her bride’s maids before the wedding; the bride should pay.

What if five friends begin a night on the town at the spa? Everyone pays their own way.You can discuss a discount at a great deal of spas if more than five or six individuals attend as a group, yet that discount might not be big.

A spa party is a fantastic day out whatever the reason for the party, and they are very flexible. You could hire the whole spa for two or three hours for mum’s fiftieth and meet up in the bar afterwards or you could use the spa party as a precursor to going on somewhere else. One thing is for certain, you will feel at your best and up for anything when you walk out of the spa party.

Some Facts About Cholesterol And Triglycerides

Cholesterol has a bad press to be sure, but this is because the press does not normally give the full story. It is easier and more frightening to leave a couple of bits out. The fact is that we have to have cholesterol and triglycerides for that matter in order to function normally. The point where these fats get to be a problem is if we have too high a percentage of them in our blood.

This is a comparable situation to having a lot of sugar in the blood on a regular basis, which is otherwise called diabetes. Another word for this is hyperglycaemia and hyperglycaemia can become a cause of having too many triglycerides in the blood as well, which by the way is called hypertriglyceridemia. ‘Hyper’ meaning ‘too much’.

Cholesterol and triglycerides are the two main fats in our blood system. Cholesterol and triglycerides come from the foodstuffs that we consume, but our own bodies create them too. Cholesterol is crucial for several basic bodily functions like regulating hormones and making bile.

Having said that, there are two kinds of cholesterol: low and high density cholesterol. The low end can go very low and the lower it goes the worse it is for you. This is a very complicated topic which is better explained in a longer piece, but all you have to remember is that low density or LDL is bad and high density cholesterol is ‘better’.

This is a very simplistic description, but it is the one that we are told about in the popular press. HDL cholesterol is believed to help mop up LDL cholesterol, which is why it is called good.

If this natural process does not take place or goes out of balance, the LDL cholesterol waxy fat will stick to the walls of arteries making them thinner, narrower. This is called atherosclerosis (furring of the arteries) and means that the heart has to pump blood harder in order to get oxygen to each part of the body.

This is known as hypertension or high blood pressure and puts the heart at danger of stress and failure – coronary heart disease and stroke are the possible results of furred arteries.

There is a lot that you can do to adjust any concerns with your cholesterol levels. Most of our cholesterol comes from eating red meat and full-fat dairy products, so merely by replacing every other steak with a salad could hugely reduce your problem. There are other ways of doing this too, like exercise.

Exercise is a good way of burning up the surplus fats in your blood stream, but it has to be carried out on a daily basis. Not that it takes much. If you think of what you eat and reduce the foodstuffs heavy in cholesterol, you might only require 30 minutes moderate exercise a day in order to become healthy.

The fact is that if you do not do something about your state of affairs, you will be put on tablets for the rest of your life. You may think that this is a fair alternative to diet and exercise, but it is not really. It is only the simple option.

Mosquito And Other Insect Bites

We all are bitten by insects from time to time – we are simply too abundant a source of food for insects to ignore. However, some individuals react fairly badly to an insect bite, while others do not seem be all that much troubled by them. The most common insect bites are from mosquitoes, ants, fleas and gnats or midges and now bed bugs are coming back too..

If you are not excessively allergic to these bites there is no need to do anything about the bite itself although you might like to eradicate an infection of ants, fleas and bed bugs. Mosquito and other insect bites usually produce an itchy, red swelling, which should go down within one to three days, although some people do have them for a lot longer.

We say that insects bite, but it is not always true. It is slapdash speech. Some insects bite (like ants), some insects sting (like bees) and other insects suck blood (like mosquitoes, fleas and bed bugs). Most individuals are more likely to develop a reaction to blood sucking although the stings are the most painful.

Blood-sucking insects squirt some saliva into you through a pore before sucking blood. This saliva contains an anticoagulant to cause the blood run more freely and it may contain an antiseptic and an analgesic as well to ease the pain of a possible infection or reaction to the bite. It is this saliva that causes the swelling and itching in most instances.

This is like an allergic reaction, but doctors do not consider it to be an allergy. Some people really are allergic to the bites of blood-sucking or stinging insects and they may need to be hospitalized. They suffer much more than an itchy swelling for a day or two. You will soon know if you are allergic. You may even pass out or go into a coma.

Anyway, the priority for most of us after being ‘bitten’ is to relieve the itching and reduce the swelling. It appears that some treatments work better on some people than on others, so it is a case of trying different items until you find one that suits you and the type of bite that is afflicting you.

Tiger Balm works on many insect bites for most individuals, but some people merely have to rub a slice of lemon or an ice cube on the bite to make the bite more tolerable. If you are going to treat mosquito and other insect bites, you ought to do it as soon as you can after having been bitten. Attempt to get that saliva out so that it does not have time to activate your bodies natural defences.

Some creams seem to neutralize the saliva whilst others seem to pucker the skin enough to squirt it back out. If the saliva is back outside it cannot cause an infection although most infections like this are the result of scratching with dirty finger nails

Owen Jones, the writer of this article writes on lots of subjects, but is at present involved with getting rid of mosquito bites problems. If you want to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our web site at Mosquito Bite Swelling.

Cooking Fundamentals (Part 1)

Without a doubt, the greatest problem confronting the human race is the production of enough food for the population of the world. After all, food, including water, is the one thing that we can not do without. Everyone has to eat enough, although lots of individuals do eat too much each day. However, it is not just a question of putting something or enough in our mouths, the food has to supply enough energy and adequate nutrients.

Our bodies require the nutrients it takes to allow it to fight off attacks from disease, repair itself if it temporarily loses one of those battles and to only grow as we mature from childhood. We also need nutrients and energy to be able to move around, do our job and raise our children. Therefore, in order to get the most out of life, we all need to eat enough food of the correct quality.

However, having enough of the right sort of food is only part of the difficulty. You also have to know how to get the most out of that food by serving it properly and mixing it with appropriate foods. This normally involves cooking.

Therefore, the ability to cook is one of the most vital skills that a person can acquire otherwise many of the nutrients will be lost and so precious food will get wasted too. However, cooking does not just mean preparing the ingredients in the right manner so as not to squander nutrients, it also means providing the complete range of nutrients and fibres that we need over the period of, say, a week.

Cooking has conventionally been seen as a woman’s occupation in most parts of the world and this is understandable because women were often at home with children for a large part of their early lives, however, that has changed in numerous societies. Since the introduction of the birth control pill, numerous women have taken on a different, more equal function in society. Not just that, but more and more individuals are choosing to live alone and indeed individuals are also living longer.

This all points to a requirement for everybody to know how to cook. Each man an and woman ought to understand at least the rudiments of cookery so that they can take care of themselves or / and take an dynamic role in taking care of their family. This is not an easy job, if you prefer to get it correct. In many societies, children begin helping their parents and grandparents prepare food from an early age.

This is something that went out of fashion in many Western countries in the Seventies and Eighties. Luckily, this trend is reversing, however what is noticeable is that young Asian individuals living in the East are shunning learning to cook as ‘old fashioned’ as they are getting more prosperous. This is a real pity , yet we cannot expect Asian youth to learn from our mistakes.

The family cook has additional responsibilities other than merely those outlined above, the family cook also has to learn how to use the household budget wisely. In lots of families, the food budget is the largest proportion of the total household budget. That is a big responsibility. This only emphasizes the importance of cooking in the correct manner, acquiring the most nutrients possible from food and minimizing waste.

Home Fire Safety Checklist

The way to deal with situations which could reasonably be expected to cause panic is to have a plan of action firmly entrenched in your mind already, so that in impact you merely have to follow routine. This is how people are taught in the military yet in rescue organizations. They have procedures yet routines but they practice them until they get second nature.

This is not so easy in a domestic situation especially with regard to a house fire – you cannot realistically pretend that you have a house fire but you cannot merely set fire to bits of it either, so the next best thing is to have a checklist to prevent fires occurring yet to go through the checklist on a ordinary basis – say, weekly.

Many house fires begin in the kitchen, so you could begin there:

1] Is the oven clean? The rings and the oven have to be clean or the fragments can catch fire.

2] Are the curtains so long that possible become blown onto a hot ring if the window is open? This is a frequent cause of kitchen fires, especially if you hang new curtains in the winter or spring and do not realize that the wind can blow them into the rings until the summer whilst you open the windows

3] Are the flexes on your electrical devices all right? Check for fraying or wear and tear. Are any of the electrical sockets overloaded? It is not a good idea to use adapters in the kitchen – stick to the principle of one plug in one socket and a pretty good habit is to unplug anything you are not using, even the kettle or the coffee percolator

The home’s heating system is a fire risk, after all it is meant to be hot, so check it:

1] All heaters ought to be switched off while there is no one to keep an eye on them, with the exception of central heating. Turn bar fires off if you go out or go to bed and always fix a guard in front of open fires if you leave the room. ‘Fix’ a guard with clips, do not only stand one in front of the fire because a falling log or lump of coal can knock a guard over.

2] Can curtains or other textiles blow into the fire or get heated to the point of combustion? Occasionally, people pull their chair or couch up to the fire but fall asleep or go to bed leaving the chair to heat up.

3] Is the chimney clean? Soot can and does catch fire so have your chimney cleared or inspected regularly.

4] Likewise with the furnace, is it clean and soot-free?

5] If you use gas, are the bottles stored outside the house?

5) Is the furnace been wiped and inspected every year?

6) Are the propane tanks yet fuels stored outside the house?

Then there are general points:

1] Do you have a house fire safety evacuation drill? Do you have a muster purpose, so that everybody knows that everyone is out of the house and safe?

2] Are electric leads, cables and extension leads in good condition? Do you have any under carpets? If so, you ought to not really, so check them for wear.

3] Are any sockets overloaded? Are all devices that are not in use unplugged?

4] Do you have smoke detectors? Do you check that they are working? Do you have a spare battery in case one fails?

What Are Bags Under Your Eyes?

Bags under your eyes are traditionally associated with a lack of sleep, but the fact is that some people are more liable to them that others. Some of this has to do with lack of sleep, fair enough, but other factors are age, skin sort and bone structure.

Therefore, if you begin getting bags under your eyes all of a sudden, then you can assume that the problem is because of recent events, but if you merely find that the bags under your eyes are becoming more and more obvious as you get older, then the reason may be more basic.

Many people, especially women, spend time each day of their adult life looking after the skin under their eyes, because they realize that that region of their face is the most scrutinized by friends and strangers alike. People are conscious that their eyes are mirrors of their feelings (or even souls) and they want those mirrors to be set in as attractive frames as possible.

The fact is that for the majority of younger individuals, the reason for bags under the eyes is as simple as lack of sleep. However, it is the reason for the lack of sleep that ought to be the main concern.

If it is only because they have young babies, then that is par for the course or if it is because of partying all night, the remedy is simple, but if it is because they are worrying all night then that is something else. The source for the worry has to be sorted out.

Illness is another cause for acquiring bags under your eyes and then it is a question of going to your doctor. Sleeping disorders such as sleep apnea and insomnia also fall into this category, but doctors can help here too.

There are thousands or treatments for bags under your eyes which come about as a result of weakening facial skin muscles, which normally happens because of age. Some individuals use expensive skin creams and others opt to use more traditional remedies. However, both the costly creams and the traditional cures usually rely on the use of astringents.

I cannot profess to know which are the best creams, but I can list a few of the time-honored remedies for bags under your eyes. Numerous individuals try used tea bags, slices of cucumber or cold eye covers like wet cotton wool that has been held in the fridge or even the freezer.

Still other individuals want an immediate and more permanent remedy for the bags under their eyes and opt for surgery. This kind of surgery is not as radical as having a full face lift but it works in a similar manner. A person who undergoes tucks under the eyes will experience black eyes for a short time and a little discomfort at first, but the improvement will last for years.

Some people choose to have this type of surgery done ‘whilst on holiday’ somewhere, so that none of their friends notice that they have black eyes for a couple of days.

Tips For Dealing With High Blood Pressure

Putting on weight and doing less exercise is a characteristic pattern of life for middle-aged people of both sexes. Whilst we are young, our metabolisms can handle most problems we throw at it but we start our jobs on the bottom rung and perhaps even have a young family to take care of. This all burns up our calories fairly naturally.

However, as we get older our metabolism slows down; we might get a manager’s job and our kids leave home. This all has the result of calories being stockpiled on our waists and thighs. However, there are a couple of things that can be done about it, but it in essence boils down to taking more exercise and watching what we eat.

This usually has the effect of giving us hypertension, which is what most individuals call high blood pressure. The point of this piece is to offer some tips for dealing with high blood pressure. The fact is that if you do nothing about the condition, you will be taking medication for the remainder of your life.

That is OK, if you do not mind taking medication, but most people would rather avoid taking medicine every day.

So the first thing to do is moderate your weight to what it should be. If you do not know what this is, you will have to enquire of a dietitian or your GP. The handy thing about the majority of of the things you ought to do is that they are all connected with decent health.

For instance, if you are flabby, you require more exercise and more exercise will also help lower your blood pressure. Two birds with one stone!

It does not take a great deal to make a big difference, if you do nothing at all now. Walking for thirty minutes twice a day will make a huge difference to your body if you do not walk anywhere now. Walking will have a knock-on effect. It will make you lose weight, it will lower your blood pressure and it will massage your internal organs naturally. Swimming works in a comparable way.

Reducing your consumption of salt is a good way of losing weight, yet you do have to seek professional advice on this subject because salt is a vital part of the human diet. However, if you eat too much salt (normally by eating too much processed food), you can change the situation by using herbs and spices instead of salt to augment the flavour of your food.

Other facets of life that escalate blood pressure which do you no use at all anyway are smoking, drinking to excess regularly and allowing yourself to get stressed out. Curing these three habits will have the effect of decreasing your blood pressure.

Taking any of these pointers for dealing with high blood pressure on board will enhance your life and reduce your blood pressure, but you might need to do all of them to get it down if you have a significant problem.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece writes on several of topics, but is currently involved with work on high blood pressure charts. If you want to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at High Blood Pressure Recipes.

The Constituents Of Food

Unfortunately, not all foodstuffs are made equal which makes the job of the dedicated cook more difficult, because it means that the cook has to understand the dietary requirements of humans at all stages of life, which foods can fulfill those requirements and, for typical families, within a finite budget.

Therefore, it is useful to know the constituents of food – that is, how much water, which vitamins, how much protein, fat and carbohydrate everything holds. If you know these proportions in each foodstuff, you can match them to your family’s needs, and also choose the right method of serving the food, because some means of preparation destroy some of these properties and so ought to be shunned.

It is possible to cook very successfully for a family without knowing all these facts, yet knowing them either by having picked it up from an older relative or by study makes success more assured. Let us take a look at the five most common needs of all human beings, if not indeed all mammals.

Water is the largest component of human bodies and has to make up the largest proportion of our intake as well. We are continuously using up our water content in evaporation, repair, replenishment and cleaning. Fortunately, there is also a lot of water in a lot of items that we eat, eg fruit, meat and fish, yet we still have to drink water to keep our fluid levels up. Dehydration kills.

Next in importance is mineral matter – that is vitamins and nutrients. It is not a problem to get this mineral matter, because plants suck it up from the ground and so, if you eat enough plant life, you ought to eat enough minerals. By plant life, I mean fruit, vegetables and fungi. Carnivores can consume a concentrated mix of plant life by eating meat, however lots of people have given up meat for one reason or another.

Different plant life has a different allotment and concentration of mineral. In general, cooking does not destroy mineral content, but over cooking can result in the mineral leaching out into the water they are boiled in.

Humans require protein to grow and repair themselves so a lack of protein is the main problem for vegetarians. It is not an insuperable difficulty, yet it is a worry. Carnivores get their protein from meat, fish and dairy. The process of cooking protein makes it more easily digestible for humans; dogs and cats do not have this requirement.

A lot is talked about fat, yet fat is a necessary component of the human diet. A fat-free diet is not healthy for us, but the problem is that fat is easy to derive, especially from junk food. Carnivores get most of their fat from meat, yet fat is not difficult for vegetarians, because there is fat in almost every type of food, including nuts and grains.

Carbohydrates have also caused a lot of controversy (especially with the Atkins Diet), but carbohydrates are also a basic part of our diet. Again, it is not a problem to get all the carbohydrates that we need. Carbohydrates are most predominant in starches and sugars yet there is no doubt that we should monitor our consumption of carbohydrates in the same manner that we should with fats.

Trying To Avoid Cancer Of The Lungs

Cancer is the main or second biggest killer in most countries in the world in spite of the fact that there has been a blitz on smoking. There are not that many countries left in the Western world where there are not some restrictions on smoking. This is hardly surprising actually, we all know what smoke and pollution is doing to the world’s atmosphere and to the world’s foliage – it’s lungs – so why would it not be doing the same to us? In spades, even?

Cancer is a state where cells start growing out of control, as most of us already know. The majority of people affected are over forty rears old and it affects women smokers equally as much as men smokers. By tradition, more men smoked than women, but that ratio is changing.

These days, it is more common to see women smoking than men. This is normally because women strive to use smoking as a hunger suppressant – in other words an aid to dieting.

Smoking is the foremost reason for cancer and so it is thought that during the following decades, that there will be a higher percentage of women dying of lung cancer than men for the first time in history.

An off-shoot of smoking is passive smoking, which is the condition in which someone breathes the secondhand smoke of a smoker. This used to happen most often in bars and offices, but smoking there has now been banned, so it is expected that most passive smoking now takes place in the home, which puts children most at risk. There are comparable experiences to passive smoking from pollutants from vehicles.

The difficulty with lung cancer is that there is no cure. Your body can repair itself if you give it a fair chance, but it does need a fair opportunity. Many people have been able to do well with a little lung cancer, but you cannot do well with merely a couple of percent of your lungs.

This is why some of the symptoms of lung cancer are coughing, wheezing, blood in the phlegm that smokers cough up, being out of breath and having chest pains. Heavy smokers who are developing lung cancer are frequently under weight as well.

Unfortunately, chemotherapy and radiotherapy do not have a immense deal of effect on this kind of cancer. The most a sufferer can look forward to is a wheezy life in an oxygen tent. And not a long life at that. Drugs can alleviate the pain and improve breathing, but not much more.

Surgery can help, but you just have so much lung capacity and if that is cut away it will not grow back. You can do fairly well with only one lung, but a full and active normal life is a problem. You would require an inhaler to walk any distance.

The other thing is that blood flows through the lungs to pick up oxygen which it distributes to each part of your body. While it is oxygenating this blood it will also pick up cancerous cells and distribute these over your whole body too. It could well be that it is one of these secondary cancers that will do for you.

Selecting The Optimum Foods

Every stage of cooking is vital: meal planning, meal preparation and presentation, yet before any of this can take place it is essential to pick the things that you are going to cook. The ability to pick high quality products is also very important. Food deteriorates after a particular length of time so knowing which signs to look for is the art to this specific aspect of cooking.

There are a number of considerations to product selection. For instance, the cook has to judge whether the produce is fresh, ripe or over ripe. Is the amount of waste associated with this produce acceptable? Will this product provide the necessary amount of nutrients? Do the intended consumers like it or will they like it? Does the price validate selecting this alternative?

Balancing all these considerations is really some feat that maybe a billion people carry out every day and perhaps a number of times a day. It is just remarkable. However, the best cooks or household managers need experience to do it correctly most of the time yet you can only get experience by ‘doing’ and doing involves making mistakes from time to time. There is nothing wrong with that – making mistakes is a standard part of the learning process.

There are in essence three elements to the successful selection of food. These are: 1] the substance of which it is composed; 2] its worth or potential to provide energy and or nutrients and vitamins and 3] how easily these qualities can be extracted in a digestible form.

It is only after you have answers to these three questions that you can know whether a product is worth the money. In other words, while you might always know the cost of an article of food, you may not always know its value.

It is clear from the above that the cook who takes his or her job seriously has a mammoth task on hand to know what human bodies need at the different stages of growth, illness and even just recovery from regular wear and tear; to know what articles of food can supply those needs; how to select foods that are at the peak of condition and how to prepare those foods so that you gain the most of that products potential.

Then there are the other considerations of whether you or your family will eat those products at all or whether they will only eat them if cooked according to particular recipes and finally, whether you can afford those foods.

As far as preparing children to eat or at least try different foodstuffs is concerned, it is important to get started as soon as possible. Children do not know what is healthy for them so allowing them to eat hamburgers and chips every day, because it is ‘all they will eat’ is nonsense. Children have to be trained to eat what is put in front of them until they are competent to make their own choices.

The Rules For Being A Vegetarian

When you choose to be a vegetarian, it is a personal commitment yet only a personal commitment. No one will ever give you a rule book, a set of principles to sign up to or a set of guidelines to follow. It is completely up to you what you mean by being a ‘vegetarian’. There are no rules for being a vegetarian.

There are, however, different levels of vegetarianism yet some vegetarians may well debate yet even argue that their personal point of view is correct. The strictest kind of vegetarianism that you are probable to come across is the macrobiotic diet; then there are the vegans, who do not consume any animal products including fish, eggs and dairy products.

Then there is the majority of vegetarians who will consume fish, dairy and eggs but there are those who do not take fish, some who will drink milk and eat cheese but will not consume eggs and some who do. I even knew a vegetarian who allowed himself one bacon sandwich a month and turkey on Christmas Day (my father) and he considered himself a vegetarian.

You could assume a mild form or vegetarianism at first but then gradually give up fish and dairy products later as your craving for animal protein diminishes. Or you could jump in at the deep end by going vegan and add fish back in if you find it too hard. You can do whatever your conscience permits you to do.

Let us suppose that you take the gentle approach to vegetarianism for a year or two and then choose to stop eating dairy products and eggs. You have now become a lacto-vegetarian. It shows a sympathy for the animals in the dairy and egg industries. Numerous hens live in dreadful battery conditions. In general, cows fare somewhat better, but they still live an abnormal life.

Ovo-vegetarianism is the name give to the diet by which you can keep eating eggs after you have given up meat, fish but dairy products. Ovo-vegetarianism is handy if you find it difficult to become enough protein into your diet, because you can have an egg for breakfast but become vegetarian for the rest of the day.

Veganism is just about as strict as most people would like to go. Strict vegans do not eat any animal products including honey. Most people find that this is going too far and that it puts unnecessary stress on the vegetarian doing it. After all, a vegan has to know what is in everything he or she eats: each dish, loaf of bread, cake, biscuit and even slushie, in case someone has used honey as a sweetener or animal fat instead or margarine.

Most vegetarians would recommend the slow and steady approach to becoming a vegetarian, because it can get problematic at first and you do not want to put yourself off before you have even given it an opportunity to benefit you. Bear in mind that lifestyle alterations are always hard, so go easy on yourself and take your conversion into a vegetarian leisurely.

Safe Gas Boiler Repairs

There is not actually much to go wrong with contemporary gas furnaces, but each mechanical item can fail and the central heating system is one of them. The problem is though, that hundreds of millions of households around the world have come to rely on their central heating system.

In general, people are not advised to meddle with items that they know nothing of, especially if it refers to something that could become a fire hazard, but this article is about safe gas furnace repairs, that you can undertake yourself.

Some of these tips might stand you in good stead if the gas furnace in your home central heating system gives up the ghost. These pointers could save you cold nights and high call-out fees.

The more that you become intimate with your central heating system, the more easily you will identify problems that arise, because in general, home heating units have intermittent issues and recurring problems.

Does your heating system keep switching itself on and off at inappropriate times? This almost certainly has something to do with the thermostat. The old way of dealing with thermostats was to tinker with them, but no one does that anymore, they only replace them. You might as well do the same.

Purchase a replacement thermostat and fit it, but if you want to learn more, play about with the metal disk in the old one and refit it after a modification. If you keep going like this, you might find out what works one day. Some thermostats are quite easy devices and you can suss them out.

If your central heating system keeps closing down, this is also probably a difficulty with the thermostat, so long as there is fuel in the tank. The strategy is the same. Look at the disk inside the thermostat and read any writing on it. Normally, if you bias it one way or the other, it will correct the problem.

A very easy one is the pilot light. If your set-up is not working, simply check that the pilot light is burning. The pilot light serves as the ignition for a heat cycle, so if there is not one present, there will be no heat cycle or heating.

The pilot light can be blown out or only go out because of a temporary shortage of fuel, after which it will have to be re-ignited.

If your whole heating system seems to be working normally, but there is no heat coming through the vents, it is probably the blower. Check the fan belt and either tighten the tension or replace it. This is an easy job, which, having done once, you can do in your sleep.

The main thing about any home appliance is not to automatically reach for the phone book if items go wrong. That is exactly what the want you to do. They would like you to think that things are too intricate unless you have studied them, whereas in fact, the majority of engineers just replace parts – very little gets fixed or taken apart any more.

Mosquitoes, Malaria And Dengue Fever

Mosquitoes live in most parts of the world. They are born into water, and it does not have to be much, where they spend around two weeks developing through the stages of egg, larva and pupa. As an adult, they live for up to another eight weeks.

The mouth parts of mosquitoes have evolved to be specialized in piercing ‘skin’ and sucking out juices. Males use this talent for removing juices from plants, but females need a blood meal to be able to produce eggs and of the 3,500 species of mosquito worldwide, some species feed on humans.

This trait means that the female mosquito of certain species can be the carrier of several infectious diseases. These diseases have an effect on and kill millions of people each year. Two of these diseases are malaria and dengue fever

Malaria is brought about by a mosquito infected with eukaryotic protists of the genus Plasmodium biting humans (and one sortnd of monkey). The disease is widespread throughout Africa, the Americas and Asia but it was eradicated from Australia in 1981. Europe used to be infected as well but is now largely clean of malaria, although not of mosquitoes.

The disease is brought about by the multiplication of the malarial parasites in the red blood cells which creates symptoms comparable to headaches and fever – something like a bad case of the flu. In severe cases, this can lead to coma and death.

Prevention is much better than cure, so the first thing to do is attempt to prevent mosquitoes breeding by eradicating unnecessary amounts of water no matter how small and how brackish. Secondly, try to prevent them biting you by using mosquito repellent and mosquito nets treated with pesticide.

There is no long-lasting vaccine that will prevent you getting malaria, although there are drugs available to prevent travellers getting malaria in the short time. Most kinds of malaria can be cured successfully, although there is evidence of resistance to several of the anti-malarial drugs.

Dengue Fever is also carried by certain mosquitoes. The indications of dengue vary but they almost always include a headache and a skin rash and sometimes joint pain. The disease is not often fatal, but it can be so if it develops into dengue haemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome (where blood pressure drops very low causing organs to malfunction).

There are four sorts of dengue fever. Having had the one, the patient has permanent immunity to that strain, yet only temporary immunity from the other three. As with malaria there is no vaccine against dengue. The only attack is to reduce the number of mosquitoes and the number of bites.

Whereas the incidence of infection with malaria is falling, the rate of infection with dengue is rising. Dengue is now endemic in more than 110 countries. It usually takes 4-7 days for the disease to show itself after infection, so any flu-like indications showing within a week of returning from an region known to have dengue must be treated seriously, especially as lots of GP’s in the west may overlook the real cause of the problem.

Controlling Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are probably the most ghastly of household pests in many peoples’ eyes. Cockroaches are bad enough, but they do not suck on you. Mosquitoes suck blood and are annoying, but we accept them more than bed bugs. But bed bugs suck your blood when you are asleep and then mess in your bed as a thank you note.

Luckily, these insects do not carry any human diseases that we are conscious of, so they are quite ‘safe’ in that regard, whereas there are quite a couple of deadly diseases that you can acquire from mosquitoes such as malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever amongst others. Still, the majority of of us prefer mosquitoes to bed bugs.

If your home is infested with these bugs, you will surely want to get rid of them, so you will have to know something concerning the lifestyle of these creatures. Bed bugs like to conceal themselves during the day time in cracks, crevices, torn wallpaper and linoleum, broken plaster, a ripped mattress and stacked clothing, books, magazines etc..

The popular belief common until a few decades ago was that bed bugs only liked dirty households, but this is not true. Cockroaches like to scavenge for dropped food as do ants, but bed bugs only consume blood and do not even have mouth-parts to consume fallen food if they were famished.

Therefore, bed bugs do not need to live in a slovenly house, merely in one that is run-down, poorly taken care of or cluttered. If you want to clear up an infestation of bed bugs, the first thing to do is wash all your clothing in hot water or dry-cleaning fluid and then store them in sealed plastic bags.

The next step is to repair anywhere they could be hiding. Stick back or replace any tattered wallpaper and seal off any loose woodwork such as skirting boards and architraves with a line of mastic or filler. Seal the woodwork top and bottom, so that any bed bugs hiding in there will not be able to get out again. This saves attempting to kill them.

Put away all books, piles of newspapers, toys and general clutter and inspect your furniture for wobbly joints. For instance, if a chair or table is a bit ricketty, tighten the screws or mastic the joints together. Plug nail and screw holes with filler or mastic.

Roll up your carpets and check the floor boards. Cork the joints, fill screw holes and check the bead of mastic at the bottom of the skirting boards.

Check the framework of your bed and repair as mentioned above. Are there red or brown smears on your mattress? if so, they could be hiding in your mattress. Sew up any tears and put the mattress in a mattress cover which can be zipped closed in order to trap any bugs inside. Otherwise, perhaps it is time to replace it.

Regular pesticides do not have much effect on bed bugs, so be careful what you purchase. You need something that has an abrasive element in it. Some use finely ground up glass, which may pose a health hazard to you or your pets.

Diatomaceous Earth is safer. Sprinkle or spray it under your carpets and about the base of the skirtings, where bed bugs like to run. Relay your carpets and steam clean them.

Tips For Bathing Your Cat

Cats do not generally need bathing because their mothers teach them how to clean themselves when they are kittens. Furthermore, cats have a valid reputation for not being fond of water too much. However, there may be times when you feel the need for bathing your cat.

For instance, your cat might get old or sick, have been in a bad scrap or be infested with fleas. When these times crop up, you will be grateful for some tips for bathing your cat, because they can become quite nasty about it, inflicting serious scratches that could get infected.

This first thing to do is get everything you need beforehand, because you will probably need to hold your cat down. So, you will want the shampoo, a flannel and a towel close by.

If you know that your cat is going to become a problem, bathe it in a bowl either in the garden shed or in the bathroom, where flying water will not cause much of a difficulty.

Otherwise, you could wash your cat in a bowl on the lawn, but an enclosed space might help your cat feel less threatened and it will be easier to capture it in an confined space if it escapes your grasp.

If your cat really, really loathes bathing and you have trouble holding it, place it in a pillow case with just its head poking out. You can use a cat collar to hold the pillow case in position.

If you use a pillow case, wash your cat through the pillow case as you would a delicate, costly woollen sweater. Use an old collar, because otherwise you might wash out the insecticide that is impregnated in it.

If your cat’s hair is knottted or clotted with blood, you can better remove the clots and cut away the hair with the cat on your lap before you start bathing it.

Whilst preparing the bowl, put a non-slip mat or towel in the bottom and merely half fill it with luke warm water. The shampoo ought to be mild. In fact, you ought to bathe your cat as you would a child who does not like getting soap in its eyes.

Lower your cat gently but fairly quickly into the water and talk to it reassuringly all the time. It will probably hate what you are doing to it, although some breeds are fairly happy to be in water. Yours probably will hot be though and it will become more than a little frightened, so carry on talking to it.

Work quickly and do what you can. It is better to get most of the work done the first time round and have to come for another go later than to really stress your cat out with a long session and who knows, it might become used to it after recurring sessions, if they do not last too long.

When you are finished, wrap the cat in a towel and be nice to it. If it is in a pillow case, wrap the towel about the pillow case and take it off under the towel. When your cat is pretty dry, you can let it go if it wants, because it will dry itself off anyway.

Recipes To Lower Your High Blood Pressure

A large number of individuals in the West suffer from high blood pressure brought on by being obese or/ |and the high degrees of stress that modern life provokes. Most people are told to lose weight, take up yoga or walking or take tablets for life. This means that most individuals end up taking tablets for life, because lifestyle changes are so difficult to achieve.

However, there is one enjoyable way of decreasing your blood pressure and that is eating tasty food that does not require additional salt, because it is flavoured by other spices. Here are three such recipes.

Recipe One: France

Leeks Vinaigrette (Poireaux En Salade)

Serves 4

12 leeks 1/4 cup olive oil 4 tspn vinegar of your preference black pepper, fresh ground 1 tbls fresh parsley, chopped mustard to taste

PREPARATION: Clean the leeks; cut off most of the green parts and wash meticulously, split if necessary, under cold running water. If they are large, split them lengthways; each piece ought to be around the size of a big stalk of asparagus.

Tie them into bundles in two places, place them in boiling salted water just enough to cover, and cook gently for 25 minutes, or until they are softish yet not lifeless. Drain them well (but be certain to save the broth to add to a soup).

The leeks may be served in a serving dish or put on individual plates. Create your vinaigrette in a bowl, adding mustard to taste, and whisk the dressing well until it is almost opaque, or emulsified; pour it on top of the leeks.

Recipe Two: Germany

Birnensuppe (Pear Soup)

Serves 2

2 tbspn raisins 1 tbspn dry sherry 2 small pears, cored, peeled and sliced 1 1/2 cup water 1 inch cinnamon stick 1 pinch crushed aniseed 2 tspns granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice

In small bowl combine raisins and sherry; set aside.

In 1-quart saucepan combine pears, water, cinnamon stick, and aniseed; bring to a boil and cook until pears are very soft, around 15 minutes. Remove cinnamon stick and let cool. Transfer to liquidizer and process until smooth; pour into bowl or container and stir in raisin mixture, sugar, and lemon juice. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled.

Recipe Three: Greece

Fried Swordfish With Mediterranean Spices

Serves 4

1/2 cups white wine vinegar 1/2 tspn paprika 1/2 tspn red pepper flakes, dried 1/2 tspn oregano 1/2 tspn cumin, ground 1/2 tspn thyme 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 bay leaf 1 1/2 lb swordfish, cut in 1″ pieces olive oil for frying 1/2 cup white flour

PREPARATION: Mix first 8 ingredients in a medium non-reactive bowl. Add swordfish bits; toss to coat. Cover and let stand at room temperature at least 1 hour. (Can be marinated for up to 3 hours.)

TO COOK: Heat oven to 200F. Heat oil in a frying pan or an electric deep fryer to 365F. Transfer swordfish from marinade to a sieve. Drain swordfish; discard marinade. Pat swordfish pieces dry with paper towels, then toss in flour.

Working in batches to avoid overcrowding, fry swordfish until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Drain swordfish pieces on paper towel; transfer to a heatproof platter but keep them warm in the oven until about to serve. (Can be kept warm in the oven up to 1/2 hour.)

Try All Natural Skin Care Products Instead

You have almost certainly been using skin care products for a while already, but there are so many products on the market, aren’t there? It is so hard to make your mind up which is the best. I hope that I can give you a few pointers in the rest of this article.

Daily environmental pollution and the sun’s UV rays increase the body’s production of free radicals. Your body already makes free radicals on a daily basis as a side-product of normal metabolism. However, free radicals can cause mutations in cells including skin cells. This can result in signs of premature senility such as cataracts or ‘old skin’ like wrinkles or even cancer. Therefore, any holistic health regimen must include antioxidants, which eradicate free radicals. Sun block is a front line defense too.

Many health and skin care regimes advocate using sunblock if you go outside, but there is a chance that you will run short of vitamin D by doing that. A lack of vitamin D can lead to osteoporosis, to which older women are particularly susceptible. If you are anxious about this, then you should take vitamin supplements.

Your skin is your largest organ and so you should not be surprised to read that your skin often reflects issues that your internal organs may have. Therefore, if you want good looking skin, you have to take care of your whole body. This basically means, hygiene, diet and exercise. Concentrating on eradicating free radicals is a good tactic too.

Honey is an important component of many skin care products. This is because honey is a natural product and it is the only foodstuff that will not go off. No matter how long you leave it. Look for products involving honey, or just use raw, natural honey yourself!

Honey does not include water, so it is not a moisturizer, but it is very efficient at killing bacteria, including the bacteria that can result in dermatitis.

Olive oil is an excellent moisturizer for the skin and the hair. Try it on hard dry skin on your heels, elbows and knees as well. It is also very effective as a bath oil. Try putting a few drops in your bath next time

Romans used olive oil as a cleanser and you can use it as an exfoliant too. Mix it with sand or brown sugar and rub it on your skin before bathing. There are many ways that you can improve the condition of your skin without going to to the pharmacy, the problem is that most people have forgotten what their grandparents knew. So, instead of reaching for you wallet or purse, do a little research first and possibly you will find that the answer to your skin problems lies in your kitchen cabinets.

Mosquitoes And Mosquito Bites: Can You Live With Them?

Without doubt only the most dedicated of entomologists and the most fervent followers of Buddha can honestly say that they like mosquitoes. The others of us in the world loathe them. The word ‘mosquito’ comes from either the Spanish or the Portuguese and means ‘little fly’. They live in most countries throughout the world and are or have been to blame for spreading various diseases throughout history.

Malaria is the sickness most commonly associated with mosquitoes and at one time malaria was widespread in Europe. Even London was a malarial city until they drained the marshes to create room for more housing a few hundred years ago. Until a hundred years ago, malaria was not thought to be associated with mosquitoes, it was considered to be brought on by ‘bad air’ (‘mal aria’).

Mosquitoes are blood-sucking insects, or at least the females are, that are still responsible for spreading many diseases throughout the animal kingdom. That is right! They do not merely have an impact on humans. Dogs in particular get a pretty difficult time from mosquitoes.

For a large part of their lives, mosquitoes happily drink nectar from flowers like bees do, yet while the female is pregnant, she has to have animal protein to produce eggs. This is what she gets from us and other animals. The male never has to drink blood.

It is whilst the female is drawing a little blood, that an infected mosquito involuntarily puts a couple of parasites into the host’s blood stream, which could cause infection with malaria, dengue, encephalitis or numerous other diseases that are spread by parasites.

Not all bites from infected mosquitoes bring about sickness. In the case of malaria for example, it has been contended that a healthy person can fight off the parasites injected by up to fifty mosquitoes in a twenty-four hour period. After that though, the parasites grow in number too quickly for our defences and get to the organs that they like to colonize.

When a non-infected mosquito draws blood from an infected human, that mosquito can pass the parasites on to other non-infected humans. It is considered that most mosquito bites happen indoors whilst the person is asleep. Therefore, the WHO and other agencies have been distributing mosquito nets treated with pesticide in Africa, where most victims of mosquito borne infections live.

However, there is a fear that treating the difficulty in this fashion may make some sorts of mosquito immune to the insecticide or may even raise the chances of being bitten outdoors. There have been comparable problems in Cambodia. Until recently, it took three days of care to cure a patient of malaria, but in one area of Cambodia it now takes five days.

Doctors treating patients in that region say that this is a very worrying development. It is thought that if this local development spreads, then it could result in the deaths of millions of Africans again.

Most mosquitoes do not fly far. Most mosquitoes never go farther than two kilometres from where they hatched out; some move only a few metres away, although others can fly some 5 or 10 kilometres, and a very few varieties will even fly up to 50 kilometres, helped by the wind, from their larval locations.

Fire Prevention With A Home Fire Safety Code

Most people have learned a fire safety drill at some time during their lives. Kids learn it in school and adults learn it at work, yet how many individuals put it into practice it at home? If it is worth practicing a fire safety code at work, it must be worth practicing one at home too.

You could adapt and implement the fire safety code from work for your home use, and just like in work, you will have to make certain that everybody in your household knows and knows your fire safety code. Adopting a home fire safety code will hugely increase your family’s chances of surviving a home fire.

The specialists at the fire station are known as Fire Prevention Officers. Fire prevention officers frequently give talks on fire prevention techniques at schools, offices and seminars. It is also often possible to have a one-on-one interview with a fire prevention officer but they will also visit you in your home for more specific advice in some regions.

The chief fire prevention officer has to train new recruits and schedule public buildings for check ups depending on their location, age and usage. You could use the same criteria to assess the risks in your own home.

For example, older houses tend to have more timber in them and smaller windows which means that it may catch fire more easily, it might burn faster and it might be more problematic to escape from because of the smaller windows, which may even be jammed.

Only to give you an concept of what a building’s fire code can be like, I will give some examples below. You can apply some of these concepts to the ‘fire code’ for your home, according to what sort of building you occupy.

Firstly, buildings in numerous countries have maximum occupancy numbers for every residential building, particularly for commercially rented buildings. You may not just keep partitioning accommodation in order to cram in more tenants (and get more rent). This maximum is a strict law and must be adhered to.

If you live in or rent out a commercial property, then all exits ought to be clearly labeled with lit signs which can be seen through smoke. They also have to have a battery back-up in case the wires get burned through. These buildings also have to have a certain number of fire extinguishers and there might even have to be a number of different sorts, eg: water hoses, sand buckets, fire blankets and regular extinguishers.

There also have to be smoke detectors and a building-wide fire alarm system. Make sure that flammable materials are stored in a safe place and that fire drills are carried out regularly. Everybody should know their muster point and which doors should be closed and which ones left open.

The Top 10 Causes Of High Blood Pressure

The percentage of the population in the countries of the West that is suffering from hypertension (aka high blood pressure) is rising all the time. High blood pressure is also called the ‘silent killer’, because there is no real notification that you have it, yet it can kill you stone dead all the same.

Whenever people say that they can feel their blood pressure rising, it is normally merely an idiom meaning that they are getting angry or excited. You cannot know that your blood pressure is high without measuring it.

So, how can you decrease your blood pressure or prevent it from going up without resorting to the daily intake of medication? Here are the top 10 causes of high blood pressure.

1] The first thing to do is lose weight if you are too heavy. Only losing ten pounds can have quite a significant impact on your BP.

2] Smoking is a cause of high blood pressure, so you could cut that out.

3] Drinking alcohol to excess often also raises BP

4] A deskbound lifestyle or plain lack of exercise will not help either. If you cannot bring yourself to go to the gym, merely walk more. A walk of thirty minutes in the morning and in the evening will instigate a deal of difference.

5] Diet. It is critical to eat a healthy diet, which will also help you lose weight. Cut out most junk foods; cut down on meats and fatty foods and eat more fruits and vegetables. Salt plays a big part in weight gain (through water retention) and is a major factor in hypertension. Reduce your salt intake. (Junk foods have a high sodium content).

6] Try to be happy. Easier said than done in most cases, but try to develop a positive attitude. Stress plays a big part in creating hypertension. Exercise is said to relieve stress as is meditation and yoga. Attempt a couple of items and see what helps you.

7] Some illness and sleep disorders raise blood pressure as do some medications. Sleep disorders like sleep apnoea disrupt your sleep, preventing you from getting proper sleep, which increases BP as well. Sleep apnoea can be the result of being overweight, so you know how to deal with that, and if you think that medication is causing high BP, speak to your GP.

8] Age can be a cause and while there is nothing you can do about your age, you can attempt to be a ‘young’ whatever you are. People more than the age of 55 by and large begin getting hypertension rather than younger people. You could strive to keep fit and optimistic. See exercise above.

9] Race is another aspect over which you have no control, yet Africans and their descendants are more liable to hypertension. If you fit this profile, become aware that you are in danger so check your BP on a regular basis.

10] Fear, anxiety and depression can all have harmful influences on BP, so if any of these incapacitating conditions applies to you, seek help.

Fundamental Nutritional Information For Horse Owners

Novice horse-owners and occasional riders might not know the precise nutritional requirements of horses. However, this is not unusual because there are a number of variables in calculating what a horse requires in the way of food. The things to take into account while working out the needs of horses are: age, weight and level of activity.

You cannot put garbage in and expect your horse to perform marvellously. You cannot only turn your horse out into a field and expect it to find all that it needs. There are common cases of wild horses dying of starvation, especially if the weather is bad.

Having said that, foraging, which mainly involves eating grass, is a major source of food and it gives the horse an interest, a varied diet and lots of roughage as well. Roughage will also help your horse’s digestive system continue working in the right manner. Just like eating only junk food is not good for the human digestive system.

A mature, working horse requires about 2-2.5% of its body weight in decent quality grass or hay a day. Therefore, a horse of 1,000 pounds will need 20-25 pounds of good, fresh grass or hay a day. If the horse is not worked, it can probably get by on about 1% of its body weight in food.

In the summer, this is almost certainly not much of a problem, but if it is in the winter or if the land cannot sustain the number of horses you keep on it. If this is the case or if you want to breed or work the horse, you will probably have to supplement the forage food with grain or oats. In this case forage food ought to make up around half of a horse’s food for top quality nutrition.

However, it is not only as easy as that either because not all grass and not all hay is of the same quality. The quantity that you feed depends on the quality needed not the quantity, so the feed that you give has to be tested too.

Your pasture is the best and the cheapest way of feeding your horse(s). Here is a rough and ready guide to feeding an average horse of 1,000-1,200 pounds in a decent quality summer pasture. A mare and foal needs 1.75-2 acres; a yearling needs 1.5-2 acres and a weanling needs 0.5-1 acre.

You can crop feed for the winter by cutting grass from another field or by buying it. The hay ought to be pure and not dusty. It should also be free of damp and mould. It might not show any signs of rot or mildew.

There are other feeds that you can supplement with, but you have to do more research. Alfalfa hay can be used but it is not the same as grass hay and you have to carry out other calculations. Oats and grain can also be given, but again more calculations are required. There are services that you can employ to get your horse’s feed checked.

No Nonsense Vegetarian Cooking

A lot of people think that they simply would not have the time to be vegetarians. This is because if you cut the meat out of a regular diet, you will become malnourished. You need to replace the nutrients and vitamins available in meat with the same or equivalent nutrients and vitamins in other foodstuffs like lentils, beans, pulses, nuts and legumes.

This means that vegetarians need to plan their meals more precisely that meat-eaters, but it does not have to be an obsession. There are fairly simple ways of acquiring all your mind and body requires.

It is probably true to say that it is harder to plan meals properly whilst you first become a vegetarian, but you will soon get the hang of preparing meals that are nutritious and healthy. However, that gets harder and harder, the more foodstuffs that you exclude from your diet.

Some vegetarians will eat fish but some will not; some vegetarians will eat eggs and dairy products, and others will not. The more dedicated the vegetarian the more a problem it is to replenish the vitamins that you are lacking by not consuming meat.

One manner of looking at how much of a problem it is to become a vegetarian is by remembering that meat needs to be cooked but fruit and vegetables do not (or not all of them anyway).

Sandwiches are also a very fast vegetarian snack and you should take full advantage of all the different kinds of bread on the market to vary the flavours and the benefits from the ingredients.

Every cook should understand how to create a casserole and this is also true of vegetarian cooks. Maybe the best manner of cooking a casserole is in a crock pot, so if you have not got one yet, buy one as soon as you can. After using your crock pot for a week, you will be asking yourself how you ever found the time to live without one before.

You can prepare invaluable vegetarian casseroles for your family when you are at work or doing something else and there are thousands of vegetarian crock pot recipes without having to resort to using a meat recipe but just leaving out the meat.

The attraction of a crock pot is that you can prepare all sorts of food in it, not only casseroles. You can create puddings, breads and cakes, but that can become the topic of future articles. The other godsend to the busy cook is the microwave. You can microwave potatoes and other vegetables in minutes instead of roasting them for hours with the meat.

So next time you or someone else says that you do not have time to become a vegetarian, bear in mind that technology has moved on from the Seventies and it is a lot easier nowadays. There is a lot more known about vegetarianism now and that knowledge is much more broadly available – particularly over the Web and there are also better cooking devices like programmable crock pots and microwaves.

Crockpot Cooking In The Summer

Cooking inside in the summer is such as a nuisance, is it not? You would like to be outdoors in the fresh air instead of sweating at a hot cooker but anyway, you are not even sure that the family or even yourself will want to eat hot food once it has been prepared. This is difficult that lots of household cooks face in the summer, especially if there is a young family involved.

Young Johnny will not touch ‘rabbit food’ – he wants meat and little Jenny does not want sandwiches again, because she had them for lunch. So, what can you do?

The crockpot can come to the rescue quite perfectly. Because it cooks over a long time without much heat, so the kitchen will not warm up much. You can put a casserole or a stew in there in the morning before going to work and let it cook all day and then, when you are back, you can simply knock up a salad for those who do not want a heavy meal.

It covers all the bases without costing any extra time on your behalf. Not just that, but if no one fancies what is in the crockpot, nothing is lost because it can be warmed up again the following day.

Using a crockpot to cook in this fashion will also save a great deal on electricity. Why? Not only for the cooking of the food in the crockpot, but also because if you cooked a traditional meal in the summer heat, you would need to switch on the air conditioning and the extractor fan.

This means that utilizing the crockpot to help supply an alternative or even the main meal during the summer is a win-win situation whichever way you look at it and it is cheaper as well.

That takes care of the main meal, but if there is more agreement in your family and you know from the start that everyone will eat a salad, you could use the crockpot to prepare a sweet. Or you could purchase a second crockpot.

Regrettably, crockpot cooking has acquired the reputation of just being good for preparing stews, but the fact is that this is very far from the truth. You can use it for roasting a joint or baking a cheesecake with loads of choices in between.

Two more benefits of cooking with a crockpot are:

Firstly, if you cook in a hurry, there is a predisposition to use rice or pasta as a filler instead of vegetables, whereas if you can prepare the vegetables a while before hand it is simpler to include them

Secondly, there is just one pan to clean after eating instead of two or three or more. This saves more time and energy as well.

You almost certainly have never been shown how to use your crockpot for cooking anything more difficult than a stew, so perhaps the first thing to do is buy yourself a decent crockpot recipe book which teaches a wide variety of meals including sweets and breads.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with researching the 2 quart crock pot. If you have an interest in cooking or crock pots, please go over to our website now at Large Crock Pots

Pool Safety Fences: A Buyer’s Guide

If you have had a swimming pool for some time or if you are thinking of getting one – either an above-ground or an in-ground swimming pool – you must check to see whether your district requires you to take any safety precautions. For instance, some states in America require the erection of a swimming pool safety fence by law, others are about to introduce such a law and others are thinking about calling for a pool alarm too.

However, it is not all one-sided. There are also benefits to the owner of the pool of installing a pool safety fence. The foremost benefit of such a fence is safety. If you have young children or grand-children, you do not always have the time to supervise them playing in the pool, so a fence is a way of allowing the kids to play in the garden while excluding them from the dangerous pool.

Kids can be scallywags, all adults know that even if some parents think that their own children are not, you can bet your bottom dollar that someone else thinks they are. Our children know that they have to behave in front of us, but what happens while they know that we are not looking? You know, you were a kid yourself once. I climbed the fence into the municipal outdoor pool more than once when I was a teenager and usually after a few beers.

The fact is that if you have an unprotected pool, there is a good chance that the local kids will use it when you are away and these days that means negligence on behalf of the pool owner. Whether that is right or wrong, it is like that and if someone should drown in your pool, you would be in big trouble, unless you could prove that your took reasonable measures to prevent unauthorized access to your pool.

A security pool fence is just about the cheapest way of doing this, although fences can be easily scaled as I full-well know. However, having a fence shows that you have considered the problem and that you have tried to deter intruders.

There are quite a number of acceptable styles of pool fencing but it may vary from district to district, so it is first worth checking whether there are any local minimum standards in force in your region. Other than that, there are choices of wire, timber and steel. Wire can include mesh fences as well.

Wood almost certainly looks the best and gives the most options. If you want total privacy, you can have a full fence or if you would like to be able to see out, you could go for hit-and-miss vertical boarding. I do not like mesh, personally. I have painted tens of miles of fencing in my time and there always seems to be litter caught in the mesh. Iron railings are nice too, but pretty costly.

Whichever sort of fence you go for, grow a continuous wall of the prickliest, thorniest bushes you can find about the base of it. Pyracanthas are good and the berries attract birds – wild birds, that is. Let them grow to three or four feet high and they will deter drunks and afford the ladies some privacy while lying around the pool.

What Are Supplements For Building Muscle?

While most people who diet in the world do so to lose weight, there are also people who diet to gain weight. There are far not so many who would like to gain weight, it is a fact, but the number is still significant.

Who would like to put on weight? The overwhelming majority of those who would like to gain weight have been ill and perhaps for a long time.

However another group of individuals who want to gain weight are those concerned with power sports. They would like to ‘bulk up’ their muscles in order to become able to lift heavier weights. There are a great deal of products on the market to assist athletes bulk up, but most of them contain protein and/or creatine and a host of vitamins and nutrients.

The fact is that you can make extra muscle without supplements but you will still have to eat more and train more. Dietary supplements of extra protein, nutrients and vitamins only serve to speed up the process.

Protein is the preferred supplement to gain weight among body-builders, field athletes and weight lifters. Protein can be derived from many sources, but body builders prefer their foremost sources to be whey, soy and eggs.

This is because these sources contain very little or no fat and especially cholesterol. Most people in training seem to prefer about two grammes of protein per pound of body weight. Protein can be bought as a food additive, tablets, milkshake powder or in the form of a nutrition bar.

Creatine is also a very well-liked source of bulking up muscles but it is more complicated to use. You must be willing to read and obey the instructions on the box if you would like to try using creatine.

The basic course of action of using creatine is to ‘load’ your body with the supplement with a precise event in mind and then to use it for that event. Some individuals take this to mean two activities a week!

Vitamins and so-called micro-vitamins are also vital supplements if you would like to put on weight in a good, healthy way. Each cubic centimetre of your body requires its quota of vitamins, so if you would like to gain weight it only makes sense that you will require more vitamins and nutrients as well.

If you bulk up by eating healthy food the extra vitamins are not a difficulty, but if you endeavour to take a short-cut by using bulking agents as described above, you will need to check that you really are acquiring everything that you require to build those muscles.

Muscle-building supplements do help, but they have to be used sensibly. It is not always vital to go to a medical doctor first, but you ought to talk to someone who has some information on the issue. Not another body-builder, but someone like the coach or trainer at your local gym.

If you are way out of shape or have other worries, the trainer might suggest that you go see a GP first, in which case you would be unwise not to follow his or her advice before attempting to use supplements to build muscle.

Equine Colic And Your Horse

If you have or have had a horse, you will probably have heard of equine colic. However, when you strive to find out what equine colic is, you run up against a brick wall. This is because the term is an old one, dating from the days when surgery and the knowledge of how bodies work was in its childhood. The term ‘equine’ naturally refers to ‘horses’ – from the Latin, but ‘colic’?

Well, ‘colic’ refers to any (spasmodic) pain originating in the stomach, intestines or bowels, but what colic does not refer to is a specific illness. Therefore, if you say: ‘My horse is suffering from colic’, you are saying that your horse has abdominal pains, but you do not know what is causing them or you are not saying, if you do know.

In other words colic refers to indications not an actual illness. You will usually have to call in a vet if you would like to unearth the cause of the pain. Occasionally, these abdominal pains pass on their own like flatulence, but other times it can be indicative of a problem, especially if the colic lasts more than an hour or so.

If the pain persists for more than a few hours, you need to take the decision whether to call in the vet or not. This is never cheap as all animal-lovers know and if surgery is necessary then costs will go through the roof.

The decision is a problematic one and depends mainly on the value of the animal to you. Numerous horses die of undefined ‘colic’ because the owner will not or cannot pay hundreds of dollars for a vets help.

Experience will help the horse owner to judge whether the cause of the colic will pass or whether surgery is necessary and a good vet will give you an honest opinion for the price of a call-out charge, which will normally be about $100..

It is hard for the young or greenhorn owner of a horse to know if their animal has a problem, but when an animal, including a human, is off its food, you can be fairly sure that something is not right.

It may just have consumed something mildly poisonous or it may have flatulence, but it may have eaten something like a nail by accident as well. If a horse keeps looking at its flanks or even nipping at them, there might be a problem too.

Your horse may have a blockage or constipation if you see him having difficulty doing his business. This might pass or it might take a laxative to ease him or it could be something more serious.

We have all seen horses rolling in rapture in a field, but if your horse is rolling in another fashion – you think it is not the same, that may also be an sign that he has a problem. So would undue sweating after little or no exercise.

An experienced horse person will have seen all this before and have an notion what to do, but it is very worrying for the novice.

Eyesight Improvement

We are under great pressure not to look old, not to look our age. One of the best compliments people of more than 21 years think that they can receive is: ‘Really? You do not look it!’ To a certain extent this obsession with a youthful appearance has always been with us, but the pressure has ratcheted up due to films and television.

Film stars and pharmaceutical companies unscrupulously team up to persuade us that we need this surgery too in order to become popular. What they do not tell you is that the pharmaceutical businesses have paid the film stars to have free treatment and then paid (or sponsored) the chat shows that so blatantly promote them.

And ageism is rife as well, both among the young, whose worst insults usually have the word ‘old’ included and among employers who can not wait to be rid of employees at 65 after a lifetime of service. Governments or at least some governments are exactly as bad, penalizing pensioners with a meager salary after fifty years of paying taxes.

Individuals used to grow old gracefully, now it is a sin. There is a long list of ‘improvements’ that you can plough your way through: face lift, liposuction, hair transplants, dentures and several others, but the one that really makes sense to me is eyesight improvement by whatever technique works.

We live in a beautiful world and it is a shame that whilst we are at the correct stage in our life to enjoy it – that is while we have more time, more money and have become more philosophical, we begin to go blind. At the same time as your grandchildren begin arriving, your eyesight begins to go.

There are numerous factors why you could begin losing your eyesight besides only old age, but old age does play a part in some of them as well.

Macular degeneration is normally called age-related macular degeneration, but there is a rare kind that has an impact on the young. There are two types wet and dry. The dry kind is less severe, but the wet kind is more easily treated.

Cataracts are thought to be age-related as well, but I had premature senile cataracts 20 years early. Fortunately these are easily treated as well with only a couple of minutes of surgery. Glaucoma is a vicious one, which can leave you totally blind, if you do not catch it soon enough and have it treated.

The key to success with all of these eyesight impairments is tackling them early. If you suspect that anything is not right with your eyes, go to a GP or optician immediately. Do not be fooled by quack cures that you might see advertised on late night TV or in the small ads. They ought to get banned.

Eye exercises and eye drops are fine for healthy eyes, but they will not help you if you have a problem, only a fully qualified expert can do that. These advertisers prey on individuals who either do not have the money for surgery or who are frightened of it and there are lots of them around too.

Cancer Prevention And Green Tea

Most people are scared rigid of developing cancer. That is perfectly understandable – who wants to spend a couple of years undergoing chemotherapy only to die a couple of years later? Or even if you recover it is a couple of years out of your life that have been worrying and gruelling. And not just for the patient but for friends and family too.

So, some people do everything possible to reduce the risks of developing cancer. Most of us do not think we know how to do this, others are not certain, but they have heard or read something that sounds ‘around about correct’ and others are convinced that they know how to avoid contracting cancer.

My wife is certain that I may develop cancer from eating burnt toast and others are convinced that they can stave off cancer by saturating their flesh with green tea. It has frequently been pointed out and for decades as well, that countries where green tea is the norm, say the Far East, have a much lower incidence of cancer than we do in the West.

And this is probably true at the moment. But why is it the case? I live in Asia and diabetes is the number one cause of death near me. Do Asians not get cancer as much as we do because they drink green tea or for other reasons?

In fact, where I live in Northern Thailand, I have never seen anyone drink tea or coffee or accept a cup off me, except my wife. People here drink water or alcohol, depending on the time of day. Kids like Cola or Sprite or whatever because they watch as well much TV, but drink a lot of water.

It is said that green tea is an anti-oxidant and it is alleged that anti-oxidants help get rid of free radicals which could cause cancer. If this is true, then the claims for green tea are maybe more substantial.

However, the claims are so all-embracing that it makes me sceptical. I am reading a report just now that claims that green tea will prevent the formation of cancerous cells in the: “… aesophagus, bladder, on the skin, in the ovaries, the pancreas and the prostate”.

That is a very tall order indeed.

The problem for me with all these claims is that they are not substantiated – there are no references that you can follow that do not lead to businesses selling green tea. This is a difficulty.

Some will say that the government or the pharmaceutical businesses are suppressing the information because they want to sell more expensive drugs – and this might be the case – grist to the mill for conspiracy theorists and retailers of Chinese tea.

Now that we seem to be entering into a ‘new era’, a more sceptical and more enlightened era (thanks a lot to the Internet), couldn’t someone do some research on green tea and Acai berries and all the rest of the stuff you read of in your junk emails and put an end once and for all to the false dreams, if that is what they are, that we are being sold every day by unscrupulous marketeers looking for a quick dollar?

Is Hair Transplant Surgery Good For Women?

Most people associate balding with men and that is not surprising as most western men do go bald sooner or later. Most men really hate going bald. Some take to brushing their hair in a different way, having it cut short or even shaved off completely or they wear a hat. Increasingly, men are seeing balding as a natural process over which they have no control and just get on with their lives. This is a step in the right direction.

However, women go bald as well, or at least they can do. Traditionally western women care more about their looks than their men folk do and so women can take it very badly when or if they begin losing their hair. Some women take to wearing a wig and others try a hair transplant.

The difficulty is that men and women lose their hair for different reasons and hair transplants favour the causes of men’s baldness rather than women’s.

Distinctive male baldness is called ‘male pattern baldness’ and everybody knows men whom it has affected. It means that men lose hair first at the front, a receding hairline, and then on the top; leaving a band of hair running around three sides of the head. The three lower sides in fact have healthy, growing, self-replicating follicles.

It is this hair that is utilized if a man goes for a hair transplant – healthy hair and it has to do with testosterone, the male hormone, as oestrogen is the female hormone.

Female baldness tends to affect the whole of the head at the same time, which means that there is not a crop of healthy hair follicles from which to transplant hair to other regions of the head. This makes most women inappropriate clients for a hair transplant.

Luckily for women up to about retirement age, baldness merely affects a small percentage of them unless it is through illness or the treatment of an illness. On the other hand, just about 5% of women are decent candidates for a hair transplant. Women who have lost their hair due to using rollers for a long period of time, usually have a couple of patches of good hair left that can be utilized for transplanting.

Other women who have a good chance of a successful hair transplant are those who have a form of male pattern baldness and those who have lost hair due to trauma surrounding areas of surgery. Those who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, will frequently make a full or near full recovery when the chemo sessions are over.

The easiest alternative for older women is to wear a wig. It is not ideal, obviously, but it does restore some confidence to those who could not otherwise go out without hair. Other choices are hats, scarves and turbans, jus like many women wore in the Twenties and Thirties.

Facts About The Collie Dog.

The Collie dog makes an excellent sporting dog and can be trained to do the work of the Pointer and the Setter, as well as that of the Water Spaniel and the Retriever. He can be trained to carry out the work of other breeds as well. It is smart at hunting, having an excellent nose, is a first-rate vermin-killer, and a most faithful guard dog and buddy.

Not much is known with confidence of the source of the Collie, but his craftiness and his external looks would seem to indicate a relationship with the wild dog. Buffon was of opinion that he was the true dog of nature, the standard and model for the whole canine species.

He thought the Sheepdog superior in instinct and intellect to all other breeds, and that, with a character which other breeds do not share. It is the only creature that is born completely trained for the assistance of man.

At the shows this kind of dog is almost always at the top of the class. He is thought to be the most tractable, and is certainly one of the most agile. The second most popular breed of this type is the smooth-coated variety, which is a hard-working, useful dog, well adapted for hill work and usually really fleet of foot.

He is not so sweet in temper as the black and white, and is slower to make friends. There is not a more elegant and physically good-looking dog to be seen than the show Collie of the present period. Bred from the old working animal, he is now practically a distinct breed.

The skull should be flat, fairly wide between the ears, and gradually tapering towards the eyes. There should only be a small depression at the bottom. The width of skull inevitably depends upon the combined length of skull and muzzle; and the whole must be considered in connection with the size of the animal. The cheeks should not be full or outstanding.

The muzzle ought to be of a decent length, tapering to the nose, and must not show weakness. Whatever the colour of the dog, the nose must be black. The teeth should be of a decent size, sound and level; very slight unevenness is allowed.

The mouth should be clean-cut and powerful. The eyes are a very important feature, giving expression to the dog; they should be of medium size, set a little at an angle, of almond shape and brown colour apart from in the case of merles, when the eyes are often (one or both) blue and white or china; expressing high intelligence, with a quick, alert expression when they are listening.

The ears should be small and moderately wide at the base, located not too close together but on the top of the skull and not on the elevation of the head. When in repose they should be carried thrown back, but when on the alert brought forward and carried semi-erect, with tips slightly sagging in the posture of listening.

The neck should be muscular, powerful, of reasonable length, and a little arched. The body should be burly, with well sprung ribs, deep chest, fairly broad behind the shoulders, which should be sloping, loins very powerful..

The fore legs must be straight and strong, leaning neither in nor out at the elbows, with a fair amount of bone; the forearm rather fleshy, the pasterns showing suppleness without weakness. The hind-legs should be muscular at the thighs, clean and sinewy below the hocks, with well-bent stifles. The feet should be oval in shape, soles well padded, and the toes arched and close together.

Its general character is to be a lissom, lively dog, his deep chest showing lung power, his neck strength, his sloping shoulders and well bent hocks representing speed, and his expression of high intelligence. It should be a fair length in the leg, giving him more of a racy than a plodding appearance.

In short, a Collie should demonstrate endurance, activity, and intelligence, with free and true actions. In height dogs should be 22 ins. to 24 ins. at the shoulders, bitches 20 ins. to 22 ins. The weight for dogs is 45 to 65 lbs., bitches 40 to 55 lbs. The smooth collie only differs from the rough in its coat, which ought to be hard, dense and quite smooth.

Electric Blankets

Have you ever used an electric blanket? Some individuals are frightened of lying on something that is plugged into the national grid and I have to admit that when I think of electric blankets in that manner, they do sound quite frightening.

However, there are two kinds of electric blankets: there are those that are intended to stay on all night and there are those that are meant to be switched off and unplugged before you get into bed.

The second sort is of course the one to be suggested for those of a nervous disposition. I have never owned an electric blanket, because my father thought that they were for ‘sissys’, but I have slept in beds that made use of electric blankets.

Whilst I stayed over at my maternal grand-parents’ house or my Aunty Lil’s there was always an electric blanket in the bed. My aunty used a pre-warmer and my grand-parents used the ‘always-on’ variety. As a young boy, I have to say that the ‘always-on’ variety of electric blanket was too warm for me.

However, in those days, in the Sixties, houses were not as draft-proof as they are now and I did not know anyone whose house was centrally heated or double glazed. In fact, everyone that I knew used to put an overcoat on the bed in winter if it got especially cold. It did not cross my mind that that was odd, everyone did it.

The fact is that some people feel the cold more than others and there are many reasons for this ranging from frailty to age and sickness. Another reason for using electric blankets is if it is too expensive to heat the whole house or bedroom. It is always going to be cheaper to heat a bed that it is to heat a bedroom. The cost of pre-heating a double bed is still pennies compared with utilizing an electric fire.

Some people, my wife included, likes to keep the background temperature in the bedroom cold. OK, cold in Thailand is around 20c, but while we were in the UK, she insisted that we slept with the windows open in winter and it was really cold. She is not alone in liking to sleep in a warm bed when her face is cold. She says that she gets a better night’s sleep in this fashion.

If you or a sick or old relative would like to try an electric blanket, be cautious where you get it from. In saying this I mean be wary of buying a cheap electric blanket from abroad off eBay in case it is not manufactured to run off the electric supply that you have in your country.

You also have to make certain that the blanket conforms to the health and safety regulations in your country. Electric blankets are safe if you follow basic health and safety rules, but be cautious of ‘always-on’ blankets if you eat in bed.

RV Safety Tools

A family journey in an RV or ‘recreational vehicle’ can be great fun, and one of the ways that you can try to make sure that it goes well, is to plan for as many eventualities as possible. This involves taking a few safety items or safety tools that are helpful for an RV trip.

If you are journeying far from the beaten track, then adequate supplies of food and water are the prime concerns naturally. You will also have to have adequate suitable clothing for the season of the year and the place you are travelling in.

However, keep in mind, that some locations are chilly at night no matter what time of the year it is, so a few jumpers or light jackets will come in useful if you are driving in the mountains, in the north (in the northern hemisphere) or along the coast.

Once you have the prerequisites to survive, there are a few luxury safety items, that you might find useful. The first of these is the cell phone. There might or may not be adequate coverage where you are going, but the likelihood are that it will work somewhere near, if you have to use it. Be certain that you have a charger that works in the RV and a hands free kit if possible.

The luxury of all luxuries is a GPS unit – Global Positioning System – so that you do not get too lost, if you are out in the wilderness or even in some huge, unknown metropolis looking for the hotel you booked into over the Internet for a couple days break from the road.

If you are renting your RV, there is probably a GPS system on board, but if you are taking your own vehicle, you may consider purchasing a mobile phone that also has GPS built into it. These hand held devices are plenty accurate to get you back on track.

However, they are electrical devices and as such can break down at any moment, especially when you especially require them, so make sure that you have a current road map as well.

While you are on holiday, the weather is quite important – in fact it can make or break a holiday, so why not take a portable weather radio with you? A weather radio is exactly what it implies. It is a radio that specializes in picking up weather broadcasts – especially local ones.

This is very convenient indeed, particularly if where you are heading is not experiencing the sort of weather you are searching for. It allows you to modify your destination without having to get there first. These functional devices often come with other tools built in like a torch and a timer (alarm clock).

Make sure that your RV has an adequate set of vehicle repair tools including gloves and safety goggles. Gloves are practical for keeping your hands clean if you have a repair to make and safety goggles come in very handy if you have to swap a wheel in a dust, rain or snow storm.

The last thing on our list, but not the least important, is a good First Aid Kit. When choosing a First Aid kit, comprehensive is definitely better than small.

Gun Safety For Shooters And Hunters

Most boys and an increasing number of girls want to shoot. Not everybody wants to kill something but that is neither here nor there. The test for shooters is to be able to hit the target whenever required. Gun safety is important, obviously, because guns can be used as lethal weapons, but at the end of the day, a gun is just a tool but tools can be used and mis-used.

Guns though are specific tools, as are all tools really, but they have such an evocative reputation. Some people are violently against them yet others uphold their legal right to hold them in a world where a higher percentage of criminals hold guns than innocent civilians.

Criminals will not toe the line by definition, but for the rest of us gun holders, it is quite vital to demonstrate that we are responsible – that we know how to be safe towards others with our firearm. It is a of dispelling fear in non-shooters and displaying that we are not all red-neck, gung ho idiots.

So, the first law is: always to regard a gun as if it were loaded. You never, ever point a gun at anyone in jest. Several famous individuals have been killed in shooting accidents. OK, frequently when they were stoned, but ‘being out of it’ is no excuse whatsoever for behaving irresponsibly. Do not point a gun at anyone you do not want to threaten – and that means threaten really big time!

There is never, ever any valid excuse for having to point a gun at anyone in jest or accidentally. Whilst loading a gun, it should be held so that the barrel is pointing away from anyone, even yourself.

If you want to pass a gun to someone, either you have to know them well or you do not do it. Whether the gun is loaded or not. The number of times I have been handed a loaded gun is incredible and I cannot put it down to my charisma.

If you must show off your gun, unload it in front of your friend and check that it is unloaded in front of your friend. If he or she does not know about guns, at least you are demonstrating how to check the safety of the gun and that you are responsible.

One means of demonstrating or reminding yourself that a gun is safe is to fasten a ribbon to a blank case and put that in the cylinder of a revolver and take the magazine out of a semi-automatic. Always hand a revolver over for viewing with the cylinder flipped out so that the person can establish that the chambers are empty bar the one with the ribbon.

Never, ever play about with guns if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs – it is too easy to make mistakes that can land you in gaol and regretting the incident for the remainder of your life, because the one injured or killed in these circumstances is normally a friend – someone you were having a great time with.

Do You Know The Symptoms Of Dengue?

Dengue fever is the result of a virus that is transferred from person to person by the bite of a tiger striped mosquito. Dengue normally starts with high fever, chills, headache, pain behind the eyes, and joint and muscle pain making the individual look flushed with a rash appearing about three to four days after the onset of fever. The rash spreads to the rest of the body and shows up often as an swelling of the lymph nodes.

Dengue, in its most common form has an incubation phase of about |five to eight days from the start of fever. It is worth noting that a person has fever for about four to seven days and it is common for most people to recover without any major complications. However, long term effects and complications cannot be fully ruled out in all cases, with some taking many months to recover and some having fatal recurrences.

This arises particularly in regions where dengue is endemic and there is the chance of repeated infections and relapses. The most serious of effects or complications are dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS).

Dengue hemorrhagic fever known as Hemorrhagic dengue, Dengue shock syndrome, Philippine hemorrhagic fever, Thai hemorrhagic fever or Singapore hemorrhagic fever can lead to dengue shock syndrome and is fatal in around 1/20 cases that have a re-infection.

The severity of the impact of dengue in the form of dengue hemorrhagic fever rests in essence on one contracting a different virus after building immunity to one particular sort of virus. The risk factors increase with having antibodies to dengue virus from a prior infection, being younger than 12, female, or Caucasian.

Look out for the effects of dengue hemorrhagic fever in the person being not only restless and irritable, but also becoming sweaty and developing shock-like symptoms. Minute spots of blood and bleeding could take place on the skin with substantial patches below the skin and minor injuries resulting in severe bleeding. Some of the early symptoms that might become noticed are decreased appetite, fever, headache, joint pain, malaise, muscle pain, and vomiting.

Then you could notice more acute indications like restlessness followed by skin discoloration caused by the flow of blood into the tissues from ruptured blood vessels in mucous membranes especially in the mouth. There could also be a sweeping rash followed by flat round spots caused by internal bleeding in the skin from the capillaries.

This dengue situation could worsen and show up as a shock-like state, cold clammy extremities, and sweatiness. A GP could examine the patient and find other indications like enlarged liver, reduced blood pressure, red eyes, swollen glands, and weak and rapid pulse.

The treatment might include a cure of the indications and a transfusion of fresh blood or platelets to correct bleeding concerns, IV fluids and electrolytes to right electrolyte imbalances and oxygen therapy for treating the unusually low blood oxygen level and hydration with intravenous (IV) fluids to treat dehydration. In addition, supervision in an intensive care unit is usually essential.

It is vital to get to your medical professional in time during recurrent attacks and to make sure of personal hygiene and cleanliness at home and its environs. Using fully-covering clothing, mosquito netting, mosquito repellent containing DEET and avoiding travelling while mosquitoes are prevalent would help to contain dengue.

Tackling Atherosclerosis With Good Nutrition (part 2)

You will have to make your own mind up on whether cholesterol or omega 6 is to blame for atherosclerosis. The argument is similar to the dieting problem: do you have faith in in the old-style fat-reduction, high carbohydrate diet or the newer, Atkins’ high fat low carbohydrate diet?

It is very confusing for the layman, but that is how specialists sell books. You pay your money and take your choice or you merely go along with your medical doctor.

However, both camps of dietitians agree that fish oil is healthy for you and in particular is helpful for decreasing LDL cholesterol and omega 6 excess. Omega 3 is best taken in oily, cold water fish like salmon, herring and mackerel.

They contain relatively high levels of omega 3 essential fatty acids. Another source of omega 3, but different ones from the fish, is from meat that has been fed on grass.

Garlic is famous for being an antiseptic but it is also useful for reducing cholesterol. It appears to have a lethal impact on LDL (bad) cholesterol, but leaves HDL (good) cholesterol alone. One clove a day is said to be enough to have a beneficial effect.

Fibre and roughage are crucial for good general health. These components are to be discovered in fruit and vegetables (especially the leafy green ones); grains, lentils, legumes and nuts. Roughage and fibre will help eradicate LDL cholesterol and prevent constipation. They also help prevent bowel cancer which is on the rise in the West.

Some nutritionists say that LDL is not perilous, but is just a threat and it becomes perilous when it has been damaged. One kind of damage is oxidization. Therefore, anti-oxidants will reduce your risk from cholesterol and arteriosclerosis. The next question ought to be: what are major anti-oxidants?

There is a colossal array of anti-oxidants ranging from the fun to the boring. I do not know what you find boring, but flavonoids are a useful anti-oxidant and they are present in high volumes in red wine. As well red wine, other anti-oxidants include: Vitamins Ce and E and beta carotene.

These are available in peppers, citrus fruit, strawberries, cantaloupe melons, broccoli, white carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, mangoes and green leaf vegetables. Other good sources are wheat, oats, nuts and seeds.

Mono unsaturated fat is one of the best sources of oil you can find. Mono unsaturated fat comes best from olive oil, which is one of the factors why the so-called Mediterranean Diet is so healthy for people.

Mono unsaturated fat has another valuable effect: eating it lowers hunger for a longer time than you would expect for the calories involved. This makes it a good substance for dieters. The same is true of roughage, fibre and eggs.

Mono unsaturated fat is one of your best friends in the fight against arteriosclerosis. However, it is not merely present in olive oil, it is also in avocados and nuts, particularly pecan nuts, hazelnuts, walnuts and almonds.

Last but not least is ginger. Ginger has a high amount of phytochemicals known as gingerol and shogaol which are also antioxidants. Ginger not just lowers LDL cholesterol, but it also assists prevent the oxidization of LDL

If you can just implement a few these alterations to your diet you may be able to ward off arteriosclerosis and avoid having to take drugs like statins for ever.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea or sleep apnoea is the condition which causes sufferers to stop breathing frequently during sleep. These interruptions can last anything from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. There are three forms of sleep apnea Central, Obstructive and Mixed or Complex Apnea. Obstructive apnea is by the most common form and it usually comes about in overweight, middle-aged men.

The most commonly recommended method of overcoming obstructive apnea is weight loss, but as this is not simple for most overweight people, the most common treatment is CPAP, which means the wearing of an oxygen mask.

The problem with sleep apnea is that the shortage of breath means that the blood and the brain are starved of oxygen. When the level of oxygen in the brain drops to a certain level, it wakes the body up to do something about it. However, the heart normally beats more slowly at night, giving it a rest, but as the oxygen level in the blood drops, the heart will pump harder to send more blood and oxygen to the areas it is most needed.

Another effect is that people suffer from fatigue during the day, which leads to falling asleep at the wheel and accidents at work. In fact, sufferers of apnea are three times more probable to have an accident than normal.

Sufferers of apnea hardly ever wake up when their brain gets them breathing again, but it can be very distressing for their partners. My wife thought that I had passed away when she first became aware of my difficulty with obstructive sleep apnea and the spluttering back to a state of breathing resembles a drowning man coming up for the second time.

Other worries that can arise after a night of poor sleep are those associated with tiredness: irritability, mood swings, bad concentration, headaches, excessive anxiety, depression, acid reflux, nocturnal sweating, lack of sex drive and increased heart rate at night.

Most instances of obstructive apnea can be vastly improved by a loss in weight. In fact, a ten percent loss of weight can produce a twenty-five percent improvement in apnea. Moreover, anything that relaxes the muscles should be avoided – particularly alcohol. Ceasing smoking can help as well.

Mechanical means of improving the condition are raising the head, so that the weight on your neck hangs down towards the chest rather than pressing down on the windpipe. Sleeping on your side can help as well for the same reason.

Black African males and Indian (from India) males are almost twice as much at risk of suffering from apnea as Caucasians. Approximately 4% of Caucasian males and 2% of Caucasian females suffer from sleep apnea. A surprising statistic is that the same percentage of Chinese men and women suffer from apnea as Caucasians. This is startling because the Chinese are not normally as overweight as Caucasians.

The terms ‘apnea’ and ‘apnoea’ mean the same; the former being the American spelling and the latter being the English spelling.
