Are you thinking about putting a koi carp pond in your garden? A koi fish pond is a great improvement to any garden. A garden pond is completely relaxing: watching the fish going about their every day lives is relaxing and listening to the sound of the water moving is relaxing as well. Koi carp are a good choice over some other fish because they grow quite large and breed freely even in captivity.

They are not that difficult to keep either. As with all fish ponds, you need to maintain the quality of the water, but that is not so much of a problem when you know what you are doing. Once you have got the water right, the rest will follow more or less automatically, although you will have to check it often.

Having said that, you ought to not merely hurry out in to the garden, dig a hole and fill it with fish. You need to buff up on the topic first, but there is so much information on koi on the market, that you will have no problem in that respect. There is also lots of information on the Internet.

The first thing to do is dig a hole for your pond, but it better not to have it consistently deep. It should be three or four feet deep at one end and a foot or so deep at the other. The koi will overwinter and sleep in the deeper water, but only the fry will feel comfortable in the shallow end. They will take refuge there to avoid being eaten by the larger fish. Like most fish, koi are cannibals.

Once your pond has been dug out, fill it with water and leave it for a week. Use this week to test your water features such as the water pumps, the filter and the fountain. If you are losing water strive to plug the leak. If you have to keep topping up the water level from the hosepipe, you will probably run into hardship with chlorine.

After a week, the chlorine in that tap water will have dissipated and any surplus oil in your pond apparatus will have been flushed out, so you can put aquatic plants in. Plant them in pots so that you can move them easily if necessary. You ought to also construct some underwater caves for the fish to conceal themselves in.

When you are happy that everything is working well and that the environment is stable (this is easier to do in larger ponds), you can think about buying some koi.

You have to decide why you would like to have koi. Do you want to show them and possibly earn some money? In that case you will have to start with expensive fish, but if you just want to sit and watch them, the cheapest ones are all right. You can probably ask a friend to give you a dozen anyway.

If you procure your fish in the breeding season, you will probably get a couple of gravid (pregnant) females anyway.

A word of warning: fish regulate their environment better than we do. A given amount of water will only hold a precise number of inches of fish. So, as an example, say that every ten gallons of water will be sufficient for ten inches of fish and you have 200 gallons that is 200 inches of fish, which is 20 x 10 inch fish or 40 x 5 inch fish. As the fish grow, they will die to maintain this ratio, so do not buy too many until you understand this ratio.

Cats do not generally need bathing because their mothers teach them how to clean themselves when they are kittens. Furthermore, cats have a valid reputation for not being fond of water too much. However, there may be times when you feel the need for bathing your cat.

For instance, your cat might get old or sick, have been in a bad scrap or be infested with fleas. When these times crop up, you will be grateful for some tips for bathing your cat, because they can become quite nasty about it, inflicting serious scratches that could get infected.

This first thing to do is get everything you need beforehand, because you will probably need to hold your cat down. So, you will want the shampoo, a flannel and a towel close by.

If you know that your cat is going to become a problem, bathe it in a bowl either in the garden shed or in the bathroom, where flying water will not cause much of a difficulty.

Otherwise, you could wash your cat in a bowl on the lawn, but an enclosed space might help your cat feel less threatened and it will be easier to capture it in an confined space if it escapes your grasp.

If your cat really, really loathes bathing and you have trouble holding it, place it in a pillow case with just its head poking out. You can use a cat collar to hold the pillow case in position.

If you use a pillow case, wash your cat through the pillow case as you would a delicate, costly woollen sweater. Use an old collar, because otherwise you might wash out the insecticide that is impregnated in it.

If your cat’s hair is knottted or clotted with blood, you can better remove the clots and cut away the hair with the cat on your lap before you start bathing it.

Whilst preparing the bowl, put a non-slip mat or towel in the bottom and merely half fill it with luke warm water. The shampoo ought to be mild. In fact, you ought to bathe your cat as you would a child who does not like getting soap in its eyes.

Lower your cat gently but fairly quickly into the water and talk to it reassuringly all the time. It will probably hate what you are doing to it, although some breeds are fairly happy to be in water. Yours probably will hot be though and it will become more than a little frightened, so carry on talking to it.

Work quickly and do what you can. It is better to get most of the work done the first time round and have to come for another go later than to really stress your cat out with a long session and who knows, it might become used to it after recurring sessions, if they do not last too long.

When you are finished, wrap the cat in a towel and be nice to it. If it is in a pillow case, wrap the towel about the pillow case and take it off under the towel. When your cat is pretty dry, you can let it go if it wants, because it will dry itself off anyway.

Novice horse-owners and occasional riders might not know the precise nutritional requirements of horses. However, this is not unusual because there are a number of variables in calculating what a horse requires in the way of food. The things to take into account while working out the needs of horses are: age, weight and level of activity.

You cannot put garbage in and expect your horse to perform marvellously. You cannot only turn your horse out into a field and expect it to find all that it needs. There are common cases of wild horses dying of starvation, especially if the weather is bad.

Having said that, foraging, which mainly involves eating grass, is a major source of food and it gives the horse an interest, a varied diet and lots of roughage as well. Roughage will also help your horse’s digestive system continue working in the right manner. Just like eating only junk food is not good for the human digestive system.

A mature, working horse requires about 2-2.5% of its body weight in decent quality grass or hay a day. Therefore, a horse of 1,000 pounds will need 20-25 pounds of good, fresh grass or hay a day. If the horse is not worked, it can probably get by on about 1% of its body weight in food.

In the summer, this is almost certainly not much of a problem, but if it is in the winter or if the land cannot sustain the number of horses you keep on it. If this is the case or if you want to breed or work the horse, you will probably have to supplement the forage food with grain or oats. In this case forage food ought to make up around half of a horse’s food for top quality nutrition.

However, it is not only as easy as that either because not all grass and not all hay is of the same quality. The quantity that you feed depends on the quality needed not the quantity, so the feed that you give has to be tested too.

Your pasture is the best and the cheapest way of feeding your horse(s). Here is a rough and ready guide to feeding an average horse of 1,000-1,200 pounds in a decent quality summer pasture. A mare and foal needs 1.75-2 acres; a yearling needs 1.5-2 acres and a weanling needs 0.5-1 acre.

You can crop feed for the winter by cutting grass from another field or by buying it. The hay ought to be pure and not dusty. It should also be free of damp and mould. It might not show any signs of rot or mildew.

There are other feeds that you can supplement with, but you have to do more research. Alfalfa hay can be used but it is not the same as grass hay and you have to carry out other calculations. Oats and grain can also be given, but again more calculations are required. There are services that you can employ to get your horse’s feed checked.

If you have or have had a horse, you will probably have heard of equine colic. However, when you strive to find out what equine colic is, you run up against a brick wall. This is because the term is an old one, dating from the days when surgery and the knowledge of how bodies work was in its childhood. The term ‘equine’ naturally refers to ‘horses’ – from the Latin, but ‘colic’?

Well, ‘colic’ refers to any (spasmodic) pain originating in the stomach, intestines or bowels, but what colic does not refer to is a specific illness. Therefore, if you say: ‘My horse is suffering from colic’, you are saying that your horse has abdominal pains, but you do not know what is causing them or you are not saying, if you do know.

In other words colic refers to indications not an actual illness. You will usually have to call in a vet if you would like to unearth the cause of the pain. Occasionally, these abdominal pains pass on their own like flatulence, but other times it can be indicative of a problem, especially if the colic lasts more than an hour or so.

If the pain persists for more than a few hours, you need to take the decision whether to call in the vet or not. This is never cheap as all animal-lovers know and if surgery is necessary then costs will go through the roof.

The decision is a problematic one and depends mainly on the value of the animal to you. Numerous horses die of undefined ‘colic’ because the owner will not or cannot pay hundreds of dollars for a vets help.

Experience will help the horse owner to judge whether the cause of the colic will pass or whether surgery is necessary and a good vet will give you an honest opinion for the price of a call-out charge, which will normally be about $100..

It is hard for the young or greenhorn owner of a horse to know if their animal has a problem, but when an animal, including a human, is off its food, you can be fairly sure that something is not right.

It may just have consumed something mildly poisonous or it may have flatulence, but it may have eaten something like a nail by accident as well. If a horse keeps looking at its flanks or even nipping at them, there might be a problem too.

Your horse may have a blockage or constipation if you see him having difficulty doing his business. This might pass or it might take a laxative to ease him or it could be something more serious.

We have all seen horses rolling in rapture in a field, but if your horse is rolling in another fashion – you think it is not the same, that may also be an sign that he has a problem. So would undue sweating after little or no exercise.

An experienced horse person will have seen all this before and have an notion what to do, but it is very worrying for the novice.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on a number of subjects, but is now involved with the distemper in horses.

The Collie dog makes an excellent sporting dog and can be trained to do the work of the Pointer and the Setter, as well as that of the Water Spaniel and the Retriever. He can be trained to carry out the work of other breeds as well. It is smart at hunting, having an excellent nose, is a first-rate vermin-killer, and a most faithful guard dog and buddy.

Not much is known with confidence of the source of the Collie, but his craftiness and his external looks would seem to indicate a relationship with the wild dog. Buffon was of opinion that he was the true dog of nature, the standard and model for the whole canine species.

He thought the Sheepdog superior in instinct and intellect to all other breeds, and that, with a character which other breeds do not share. It is the only creature that is born completely trained for the assistance of man.

At the shows this kind of dog is almost always at the top of the class. He is thought to be the most tractable, and is certainly one of the most agile. The second most popular breed of this type is the smooth-coated variety, which is a hard-working, useful dog, well adapted for hill work and usually really fleet of foot.

He is not so sweet in temper as the black and white, and is slower to make friends. There is not a more elegant and physically good-looking dog to be seen than the show Collie of the present period. Bred from the old working animal, he is now practically a distinct breed.

The skull should be flat, fairly wide between the ears, and gradually tapering towards the eyes. There should only be a small depression at the bottom. The width of skull inevitably depends upon the combined length of skull and muzzle; and the whole must be considered in connection with the size of the animal. The cheeks should not be full or outstanding.

The muzzle ought to be of a decent length, tapering to the nose, and must not show weakness. Whatever the colour of the dog, the nose must be black. The teeth should be of a decent size, sound and level; very slight unevenness is allowed.

The mouth should be clean-cut and powerful. The eyes are a very important feature, giving expression to the dog; they should be of medium size, set a little at an angle, of almond shape and brown colour apart from in the case of merles, when the eyes are often (one or both) blue and white or china; expressing high intelligence, with a quick, alert expression when they are listening.

The ears should be small and moderately wide at the base, located not too close together but on the top of the skull and not on the elevation of the head. When in repose they should be carried thrown back, but when on the alert brought forward and carried semi-erect, with tips slightly sagging in the posture of listening.

The neck should be muscular, powerful, of reasonable length, and a little arched. The body should be burly, with well sprung ribs, deep chest, fairly broad behind the shoulders, which should be sloping, loins very powerful..

The fore legs must be straight and strong, leaning neither in nor out at the elbows, with a fair amount of bone; the forearm rather fleshy, the pasterns showing suppleness without weakness. The hind-legs should be muscular at the thighs, clean and sinewy below the hocks, with well-bent stifles. The feet should be oval in shape, soles well padded, and the toes arched and close together.

Its general character is to be a lissom, lively dog, his deep chest showing lung power, his neck strength, his sloping shoulders and well bent hocks representing speed, and his expression of high intelligence. It should be a fair length in the leg, giving him more of a racy than a plodding appearance.

In short, a Collie should demonstrate endurance, activity, and intelligence, with free and true actions. In height dogs should be 22 ins. to 24 ins. at the shoulders, bitches 20 ins. to 22 ins. The weight for dogs is 45 to 65 lbs., bitches 40 to 55 lbs. The smooth collie only differs from the rough in its coat, which ought to be hard, dense and quite smooth.

Every dog likes to be given a tasty tidbit as a treat and every dog-owner likes to give them. But do you know whether the dog treats that you are giving are healthy or dangerous for your pet, because there are both sorts on the market. In fact, there are hundreds of types of dog treats of all sizes, shapes and colours.

No matter what you feed your dog, it is worth checking whether he has eaten it all and if not why not. There could be a number of factors, but each dog owner ought to know how much their dog normally eats and what he especially likes. Not eating usually is often a sign that your dog is ill or going to get ill. Some foodstuffs can cause this sign though as well.

Treats that are made to scrub your dog’s teeth often come in the shape of a bone, not that that is significant to the dog, He knows it is not a bone sure enough. But most dogs do like them. A difficult can occur if your dog has powerful jaws and tries to consume big pieces in one go.

These substantial, slightly soggy chunks can get wedged in the throat or intestines causing blockages. Frequently these blockages will dissolve away over a couple of hours, but if they are resulting in breathing concerns or discomfort, you may have to take your dog to a vet.

Rawhide chews also come into this category although they come with concerns of their own as well. Rawhide chews are useful for scraping plaque and tartar off your dog’s teeth that would otherwise lead to bacteria, bad teeth and foul breath, but they can also get lodged in the animal’s throat or intestines, so try to buy pieces that your dog cannot swallow but has to chew on.

Rawhide is an animal by-product, so it has to be preserved to prevent it going rancid. Strive to find out what that preservative is and find out whether it is perilous or not. It has been reported that some countries have been using arsenic to preserve their chews, this is of course not a good idea and is one of the most dangerous dog treats.

Chocolate is lethal to dogs. Not many adults and very few kids are aware of this, because you frequently see people giving their dog a square of chocolate. The reason these dogs do not die a horrible death is that most of the chocolate that we can buy these days does not contain much chocolate. It is chocolate-flavoured paste. Look on the list of ingredients on the wrapper of your next bar of chocolate to verify what I mean.

However, different countries have different regulations concerning what can be called chocolate. The European Union is pretty decent, America not so decent and Thailand is appalling. Normally, bakers’ chocolate is the most powerful, which makes a chocolate covered chocolate cake the most dangerous for dogs – exactly the type of thing they can steal from the picnic blanket.

Sickness, uneven heartbeat, ‘craziness’, hyperactivity, a visit to the vets for a stomach pump or death are usually the result.

Dogs love bones and they are good for them too (which makes you ask yourself why so many dog chews are purchased). However, not all bones are good for dogs. Cats grind everything up small, which is why they can be safely given fish, chicken and turkey bones. But dogs tend to wolf items down, so never give these bones to your dog.

Fish bones are thin and sharp and can stick in the throat or gut as with humans requiring surgery, but chicken and turkey bones splinter into these fine slithers as well when crunched. Do not give them to a dog as a treat.

By about the 1700′s, the Isle of Skye and other highland areas in Scotland were already breeding lots of small terriers. Scottish breeds were separated into two types: the Skye terriers and the Dandie Dinmont terriers.

The Dandie Dinmonts were categorized as a solitary breed, whereas the Skyes were deemed to include the Scotties, the Cairns and the West Highland White Terriers also called Westies.

West Highland White Terriers were hybrids of crossed Cairns, Scotties and Dandies terriers. These hybrids were reckoned to be good hunters and loyal. In fact, many members of the Scottish royal family owned terriers that were very much the same as the Westies of today.

One folktale concerns a Westie that stopped a mother from constantly yelling at her daughter. Each time the mother shouted at her teenage daughter, the Westie would attack the mother. The dog’s aggression got to such a level during the years that the mother gave up shouting at her daughter.

It turned out that the girl was stroking and rewarding the dog for his protection after every bawling out from her mother. Many would say that the daughter was able to help her mother to modify her violent ways although she was also helping herself by rewarding the dog for its behavior.

West Highland White Terriers can live in or outdoors, so are very flexible. They have a wiry coat of about two inches in thickness covering a dense fur coat which is capable of keeping them warm. Westies are in essence small dogs of between 10 and 12 inches in height and 13 and 22 pounds in weight.

West Highland White Terriers like to dig and bark, but they also like company. They like well-behaved children and they like to run after cats. They defend their property and territory enthusiastically.

As a breed, they can suffer some ailments such as: chronic skin problems, Perthe’s disease (hip issues), jawbone calcification, cranio-mandibular osteopathy (lion jaw), patella luxation, a disorder in the kneecap, liver ailments, deafness and congenital heart disease

However, there are steps that you can take to look after your Westie. For example, they ought to be brushed regularly using a brush with stiff bristles. You ought to bathe them only when necessary, but their whole coat ought to be shaved at least twice a year and trimmed each four months. The fur around the eyes and ears ought to be trimmed as well.

History shows that in 1620, King James 1 requested some small white dogs from Argyleshire, Scotland. Colonel Malcolm, who was considered the creator of Poltalloch terriers, that are very similar to the Westies of today, accidentally shot his dark terrier. From then on he swore to have just white terriers.

In the 19th Century, terriers that were very similar to the Westies were known as Roseneath terriers in honour of the Duke of Argyle’s interest and patronage of this breed. Roseneath was the name of his estate at Dumbartonshire.

In the first ever dog show, organized in the late 1800′s, the Westies were known as White Scottish Terriers. In 1904, they were reclassified as West Highland White Terriers.

During the mid-1900′s, breeders of the Cairns in Argyle chose white puppies from the litters and interbred them to obtain white Cairns. However, in 1917, the American Kennel Club ruled that Cairns could be listed if they have the Westies’ roots.

If you want to purchase a ferret for the first time, it is almost certainly best to purchase it from a breeder. This is because, if you create a friend of the breeder you can ring up for guidance at any time, whereas if you purchase from a pet shop, the vendor or the shop assistant may not know much about them.

Ferrets take a bit of taking care of. They need more attention than a cat or even a dog and although most individuals can muddle through taking care of a cat or a dog, you need to learn how to take care of a ferret.

Look on line or in Yellow Pages for a ferret breeder in your region and go along on the spur of the moment, unexpected. In that way, you will see what the ferret farm is actually like, not something spruced up for your visit. If it is dirty or smelly, look for another one.

You can purchase a ferret at any age, as you can with dogs, but most individuals like to buy a baby and train it themselves. Young ferrets have limited distance vision, so you have to keep their environment clean and safe to avoid injury to their eyes or other parts.

In order to help keep their cage clean, you ought to toilet-train your ferret and in order to keep your house clean you ought to make it ferret-proof to stop ferrets entering your home and literally destroying it.

A ferret costs around $100, but you will also require a cage, litter box, toys and vaccinations. You might require a license to own a ferret where you live, but the breeder will be able to advise you on that. A vaccination against distemper might or might not be needed by law, but it is a very good idea if you value your pet.

If you know nothing of ferrets, the first thing to look for is the eyes. The eyes ought to be quick and the animal should be alert. Look out for distemper which can manifest itself in dull eyes, lethargy, runny nose and dull coat. you need a hyperactive ferret because that is what ferrets are like – very hyperactive.

Ferrets sleep a great deal. Perhaps 18 hours a day, but when they wake up, they are full of energy and need plenty of exercise. They have to run about, forage and hunt. Ferrets feed on live birds by preference, but they will take other food as well. Make sure that this food is sugar-free and is high in protein

There are toys that you can supply your ferret with to amuse itself, but these are no substitute for real exercise. However, herein lies the problem, because ferrets are fast and climb trees, so if you have not trained it to come when called, you might never see it again after you open the cage.

Teach your ferret to respond to a name or whistle by rewarding it when it does come as you would a puppy and bathe the animal every now and again as you would a dog.

If you have not had a cat or other pet before, it might come as a surprise to you to find out that they sometimes become ill. Some diseases are hereditary and some are acquired, but most are preventable and all are insurable. You can have your cat inoculated against the most prevalent diseases and you can take out insurance against vet’s bills.

However, besides illnesses, there are other things that can go wrong like injury from fights and worms, fleas and ticks. Worms are easy to cope with. The most widespread cat worms are tapeworms, round worms and hookworms. Cats will have worms because they consume carrion and wild meat. The easiest method to inhibit worms is to give your cat a tablet each six months. Worms are serious and must be treated or they may kill your cat.

Cats do a lot of grooming and this means that they end up consuming a great deal of fur. This fur forms fur balls in their stomachs. Usually a cat will make itself vomit by eating grass to cough them up, but they may pass into the guts where they may create blockages. This can become serious if they do not go through the cat.

If your cat goes off its food, is constipated or has a painful stomach (does not like to be tickled), it could be a blockage and you ought to take your cat to the vet. You can help your cat out by grooming it frequently to remove loose hair. Most cats like to be groomed with a soft brush or a velvet glove.

Cats suffer from urinary tract infections (UTI’s) just like humans do. However, in humans it mostly has an effect on women, it cats it usually affects Toms. You can suspect a UTI if your cat’s urine smells very bad or if it has trouble urinating. If you observe either of these problems you have to take it to the vet for tablets.

What individuals call feline distemper is not actually distemper – it is panleukopenia which is not even related to canine distemper. It is equally as lethal though and not a lot of cats survive it, although it can take years to actually kill your cat. The safest manner of safeguarding your cat against panleukopenia is to have it vaccinated against panleukopenia when it is a kitten.

Panleukopenia is extremely contagious, so if your cat has it, you should keep it isolated until it dies or have it put down. Panleukopenia is not perilous to humans, but you might carry the virus around with you and even pass it on to your friends’ cats – something that they will not thank you for.

In general, the more time your cat spends out of doors, the more frequently you ought to take it to the vets for a check up. Once or two times a year should be enough. At the check up, you can have your cat checked for parasites, fleas ticks, lesions, infections and panleukopenia and you can buy your anti-worm tablet at the same time.

If you are looking for a canine companion, you ought to put the Jack Russell terrier on your shortlist. Some of the best traits about the Jack Russell terrier is that they are small, inexpensive to feed, active, short-haired and intelligent. The Jack Russell terrier is a ideal dog for an older person, or someone living in an apartment.

The first Jack Russells were bred by a young theology student named John Russell studying at Oxford University in the early 19th. Century. It is believed that John Russell liked the look of his milkman’s dog and used it for breeding. The dog, a bitch named Trump was white and had patches of brown coloured hair on its eyes and ears.

Terriers are small, dynamic dogs. The name ‘terrier’ comes from the Latin word ‘terra’ meaning ‘earth’, because terriers like to dig and go to ground whilst hunting. Terriers have been used to hunt all types of small animals such as rats, moles, badgers, foxes and rabbits. The Jack Russell descends from fox terriers.

Jack Russell terriers like to run and dig, so they will push their owners to go for frequent walks and they have a very persuasive personality. The word ‘dogged’ could have been derived from them – they just do not give up!

Because of all their digging and rooting around, they can get pretty muddy which means bathing and grooming, although being short-haired animals, this is not a problematic task.

Nowadays, hunting with animals is banned in many countries, but this dog’s nature is still to hunt. They are particularly good ratters and can clear up an infestation of rats in short time. They are therefore also good dogs to keep on a farm or substantial garden where rodents could be a difficulty.

Terriers also make very good guard dogs. They will protect your property in the garden or in your home. They are very territorial and, although they will not usually molest or bite strangers, they will certainly let you know that there is a stranger about.

Having said that, it is a wise thing to train your dog. If you are not sure how to do this or what to teach it, go to dog training groups or buy a book. Jack Russell terriers are very intelligent and love dealings with their masters, so they learn quickly and readily if you start them young enough, because they are also fairly strong-willed dogs.

I have heard stories of Jack Russell terriers allowing strangers into a building but not allowing them to leave without being told to. This seems like a great way of catching burglars.

These dogs make great family pets, but they do not always get on with other dogs that they are not living with. This can lead to fighting and injuries.

Apart from injuries in fights, Jack Russells enjoy pretty good health. They are not prone to any major diseases like some other breeds are. They also live a long time frequently reaching 13 and fifteen with some Jack Russell terriers reaching 18, 19 and even 20 years of age.

Radio frequency identification or RFID is an old concept that has quietly become a large part of everyone’s life. RFID has been around for at least 90 years and was initially put into practice about 70 years, but not many people realized it. These days, you yourself are most likely scanned every day by an RFID reader and the things you purchase are certainly scanned at least once a week.

So what is RFID? Well, you can think of it as the update of the bar code although in fact, it is older than the bar code by 50 or 60 years. Bar codes were developed in order to integrate stock control with point of sales processing.

Everyone has witnessed this and is used to it: the sales clerk at the cash register takes the goods from your trolley one at a time, looks for the bar code, flashes a light or a bar code reader over it and the cost of the item is added to your receipt.

What you do not see is that the computerized stock records for that item are lowered by one and the sales price is noted along side it. That procedure worked well for 40 years, but now there is a need for more information to be recorded than a bar code can accommodate and there is requirement for more stock control and even more speed at the check out. Nobody has any time any longer.

Enter RFID, an old technology revamped. RFID is the expertise that they used to put in Second World War aircraft in order to distinguish friendly aircraft to the RADAR-controlled anti-aircraft guns. The same equipment, fundamentally, that they still use in aircraft today to identify it to air traffic control. The difference is that until pretty recently, these radio signal emitters or transponders were as big as a suitcase and cost a great deal of money.

These days they are the size of the tiniest coin in your change and cost about five cents. They win over the bar code because they can hold masses of data, such as where and when and by whom an item was made; how much it cost and how much it should be sold for; its colour, weight and description; which shelf and in which shop it should be kept on …. ad infinitum. The shop owner can write anything on that chip using an RFID printer.

And when it comes to the cash register… No more scanning each separate item by hand, because each RFID chip or tag, as they are called in the industry, sends out its own data on its own exclusive radio frequency, so so long as the RFID scanner is within three or four feet of the trolley, it knows what is in there instantaneously. No more unloading, scanning and reloading the basket.

In fact, no more check out clerk. Most shoppers pay with a credit or debit card these days anyway, so as you walk past the scanner with your trolley, you are scanned; you swipe your credit card through another scanner; if you are satisfied with it, you authorize the payment and the barrier lifts for you to carry on to your car. You only need a check out clerk for the people who want to pay with cash. Cheques are being abolished soon anyway.

Have you come to the conclusion that you want an air purifier for your home? You may think it is a good idea if the air in your home is ‘unclean’ in any way or even if it is damp and mildewy. There are many reasons why a home and its residents can benefit from an air purifier especially if you live on a main road or near a factory. Too many hairy pets can also be a cause of allergies which can be cleaned up by the use of an air purifier.

If you do make a decision to buy one, there are several different sorts to choose from and various price levels. You can also shop on or off line. In fact, the cost of these devices is frequently lower on line because the vendor does not have the overheads of a bricks and mortar shop front, although you will have to remember to add postage and package and any local taxes that might be appropriate. It is still usually cheaper to buy on line rather than in the shopping mall.

However, both methods of shopping have their advantages and disadvantages, so we will take a closer look at these next. Really what you need to do is compare both methods of shopping and see which is best for you. The way that I do that is by going on line and typing something like ‘air purifiers for sale’ into a search engine.

The results that come up will be numerous, probably well over 100,000, so pick a dozen or so and do some research. Amazon is normally a good place to read users’ reviews. Make notes on brand names, prices, functions and capabilities. Then take these notes to the Mall and go looking for air purifiers.

With your newly found information of these devices, you can question sales personnel and compare prices. Write more notes and do some comparisons.

Do not forget to add postage and packing and local taxes to the on line prices. Another item that you should consider is the warranty. What occurs if the purifier breaks down? Will you have to send it hundreds of miles away to be repaired? Who will pay for that?

It is always easier to claim on a warranty if it can be done locally. However, what are the chances of it breaking down anyway? It depends on the length of the guarantee actually.

Some of the functions that you should come across whilst researching your prospective air purifier are whether it uses an air filter or not, whether it can cool air or not and whether it can dehumidify or not. These three features are convenient for different conditions, but there is no point paying for something that you will never use – the dehumidifier for instance.

Some individuals prefer a device that does not require an air filter or which has a washable filter, but this is normally because of laziness and false economy. There are numerous different kinds of filters for different pollutants so they are more flexible and ultimately far better.

Vegetarians like animals too – they just do not eat them. Or perhaps that is why they do not eat them. Whatever! There is a question that troubles some vegetarians that own pets, and it is: do I have to feed them meat or can I provide vegetarian diets for my cat and dog. It is well worth thinking about this dilemma before getting a usually carnivorous pet.

Domestic carnivores such as cats and dogs are omnivores, which means that they will eat pretty much anything If a domestic animal goes ferule (wild) it will revert to its primitive form, which means that it will hunt and scavenge.

Cats and dogs will eat grains and grasses but they prefer them semi-digested, which is why, after they make a kill, they normally rip the stomach open first and eat that and the internal organs. The meat comes last on the menu.

You can see by looking at the pets’ teeth that they have fangs for killing and gripping (for tearing) and molars for grinding and crushing. The grinding and crushing refers to grains and bones.

This means that you may be able to sustain your pets on a vegetarian diet, |but it probably will not be easy. There has been a lot of research into the dietary needs of human beings and so someone on a diet, measures what he eats against what his body requires and takes supplements to match the shortfall.

However do you know precisely what your pets’ requirements are and how you can supply them? If you do not, where will you find out? I am certain you can with quite a lot of study, yet do you have that level of commitment? And do you think that your pet would thank you for making it a vegetarian? It may even turn your pet into a rapacious killer to make up the deficit or fulfill its craving for meat.

Cats and dogs require a high percentage of protein, but do you think that you will be able to sneak enough nuts and tofu into its diet to provide enough? You may find your pets chasing each bird in your garden attempting to get some meat, instead of watching them languidly from under your chair.

All in all, a vegetarian diet is not a good idea for domestic animals such as cats and dogs, and if you have trouble opening the cans or giving it raw meat, maybe you could ask someone else in the family who is a little less delicate to feed the animals or you could feed them meat less frequently, say just if you take them to your friend’s or mother’s house, then you can let them do it for you.

The other approach is to have rabbits or gerbils and tropical fish. Cats are not functional animals as dogs are in the sense that a dog will discourage burglars and if you are only thinking of pets as stress-reducers or a way of introducing your kids to the animal world, a rabbit will do that just well.

RFID (radio frequency identification) chips or tags as they are better known are the size of the smallest coin in your pocket, but they can store huge amounts of data that can be manipulated in ways that can do fantastic things.

For example, RFID tags are in most office identity tags and in a few passports, allowing the holder to pass through security quickly while keeping the building or the country safe.

They are a modern version of the bar code. Remember before bar codes and bar code readers? When a shop keeper had to type prices into the cash register, correct mistakes and look up prices that they could not remember? People do not have any time for that anymore.

It is all right at the newsagents, but picture a teenager typing in your two trolleys of weekly shopping at the supermarket every Saturday. You would still be there on Sunday! Supermarkets have thousands of items and dozens of special offers – no-one could remember that amount.

No-one can, but bar codes make it straightforward and so do RFID tags. Bar codes work well, but they have to be seen to be read. RFID tags send out their information on a unique frequency which can be read out of line of sight. In other words, an RFID scanner does not need to see the tag to read it.

The scanner can read what is in your trolley without you having to unload it and as you pass by that scanner and pay for your things, they are subtracted from stock immediately so that the store manger can see what people are buying and what nobody wants to buy. So, if one brand of cat food sells better than another, the manager will see that on the computer print-out and buy more of that make, thereby keeping more people happy.

This use of RFID in stock control or asset management to give it its more official title, can translate itself into other uses too. An RFID tag can be put under your cat’s fur or in its collar so that you can locate him if he gets lost. The police and the wardens scan stray animals for a tag as part of their routine these days. Consevationists have been doing this with wild elephants, big cats and other endangered animals for years. Now you can have it done with your pets as well.

Company vehicles, as assets of the business, often carry RFID tags and you can have one placed in your car to aid recovery if it is stolen. Baggage handlers at airports or bus terminals can (and do) use them to avoid lost luggage.

The US government insists that RFID tags be used on all vehicles carrying explosives or hazardous substances and have done for almost ten years. The US military is in fact the principal user of these tags in the world. RFID tags are used to track military assets such as weapons, battle tanks, fuel, containers, guns, you name it.

Some people worry about RFID technology. Where is the line between their convenience and their personal information? For example, they do not like getting junk emails from people that have been able to trace the purchases they made with their credit cards.

A backyard fish pond will enhance the beauty of your garden, there is no question about that. A backyard fish pond will add a focal point to a messy garden and will make a beautiful backyard or garden even more interesting. There is something pleasant about the gurgling and splashing of fresh water.

However, in spite of the massive upside of having a backyard fish pond, there is also the question of maintenance. This is not an arduous task, but it is on-going and does need to be carried out on a methodical basis.

Everybody enjoys a backyard fish pond. If you already have one, you can bear witness to the fact that guests, friends and family like to spend time sitting around the edge of your pond watching the fish go about their lazy lifestyles and listening to the sound or running and splashing water. It seems to fascinate humans and it is therapeutic.

If you do not already own a pond, but want one, the first step is to choose where to locate it. A few suggestions here:

1] do not site it at a low point in the garden otherwise it might flood when it rains and your fish might swim away. 2] try not to put it under a tree or you will spend the rest of your life dredging foliage out of the water 3] do try to put your backyard fish pond where it will be at least in partial shade at midday

Once you have the prime site, you need to think about size and shape. The most popular formats are: round, square, oval and kidney shaped. The depth of the water is also significant if you live in an area that is subject to freezing. Thirty to forty-five inches is enough in most instances, but it would be worth asking neighbours or the local pet shop for advice.

Once your pond is in place, you can install your equipment. You will need a pump to suck the debris out of the water and send it to the pond filter. However, this pump will allow plant debris to pass through it, so if you want a fountain, you will almost certainly need another pump, otherwise the fountain’s jets will become blocked by dead vegetation.

If this all seems a bit much, you can buy a pond kit which contains all the bits and pieces you will require to set up a backyard fish pond. One tip here: if you get solar-powered equipment, it will save on electrician’s fees and you will never have an electricity bill for your backyard fish pond.

After installing the pumps, filter and fountain, you can fill the pond up with water and turn the equipment on. The water is inappropriate for fish at the moment, so just let the equipment run in and the water mature. This will require a week for the water. Meanwhile, choose your fish and plants and construct any hidey-holes you want to put in for your fish.

When the week is over, you can add your plants and populate your backyard fish pond with fish.

In order to demonstrate how RFID tags can greatly influence the fortunes of a business for the better, we can take a look at a theoretical example below. Let us take the example of a furniture maker that specializes in supplying furniture to a hotel group.

In order to illustrate how RFID tags can greatly sway the fortunes of a company for the better, we can take a look at a theoretical case below. Let us take the example of a furniture maker specializing in the supply furniture to a hotel chain.

This may sound like an example with no relevance to typical small businesses, but in fact, hotel chains are awfully choosy and have no loyalty, so if you can satisfy these people, you can please anyone.

The main requirements of the hotel chain are that orders are met and on time, the quality of the supplier’s products has already been considered to be sufficient by means of enforced ISO 9000 quality control and factory visits.

The hotel furniture manufacturer decides to use passive RFID tags to track its items from the point of manufacture to the point of delivery, that is the hotel or its depot.

Under previous conditions the manufacturer had employed a couple of personnel to walk around with bar code readers and clip boards carrying out quality control and tracking the completion of orders.

The problem was that the system was still subject to human error and items still went missing, which lead to management compensating by over manufacturing and over stocking ‘just in case’.

That is a common enough phenomenon., but the difficulties are multiplied when you think of all the separate items of furniture that are implicated in a hotel room, bathroom or lobby and if they are stored in a 200,000 square foot warehouse. Items get lost, forklift drivers make errors, people forget to fill in inventory forms, get sick and take holidays.

In short, administrating a storehouse like this is a nightmare with too much pressure on important employees. It sometimes leads to incomplete deliveries or worse, imperfect delivery tickets. Sometimes the order might be complete but the hotel would think it was not because the delivery ticket was incorrect.

If this firm were to initiate RFID asset control they could affix an RFID tag to completed sticks of furniture. The tag would say where it is, what it is, whom it is for, when it has to be delivered and what else forms part of the order. The tag is being read constantly by the warehouse’s RFID readers warning when orders are running late or are still incomplete.

Not only that but the tag can say what else has to be made and whether the object itself has passed quality control. It can also say which defects someone has found with it. In short, instead of a couple of people traipsing around the stockroom hoping that they have covered everything, you could have radio sensors reading every tag in a warehouse the size of a soccer pitch, reporting back to a central computer where the storehouse manager can have access to real time intelligence, not just the state of affairs at close of business the day before.

This should enhance the manager’s opportunity to manage, cut down on waste, guarantee complete orders handed over on time and so superior levels of customer satisfaction, which should lead to more repeat orders.

All RFID tags are used to store and ultimately send data. They can best be thought of as the replacement for the bar code. However, they have significant advantages over bar codes. For instance: RFID tags can hold much more data than bar codes; they can be scanned from further away and they can in point of fact send data, not only store data.

There are three varieties of RFID tags: passive, active and hybrid. Passive RFID tags are the least expensive, because they are less complex. They need to be induced to disclose their data by taking power from an RFID reader. When the reader’s radio waves hit them, they reflect back their data. This is the kind of tag used in goods in a retail outlet or on crates in a warehouse.

On the other hand, active RFID tags have a battery, a transmitter and an aerial so that they are always transmitting. These units are clearly a lot more expensive and so are used only on more expensive items like a container, a battle tank, an aircraft, on criminals ankle bands or on an animal of an endangered species.

The hybrid RFID tag is capable of transmitting, but it has to be told to transmit; it has to be turned on by a signal. This signal could be a satellite flying over head. These hybrid RFID tags are also costly, but the battery lasts longer because they are not ‘always on’. These tags have the same uses as the active tags, but are suitable for use where it is not vital to know where something is every minute of the day: for instance cows in a field or goats on a mountain.

Passive tags can be attached permanently by sewing them into linings or putting them under skin because they do not have their own power source and do not wear out. This is a cause of anxiety to some people who worry about an invasion of their privacy or the erosion of their human rights.

Active and hybrid tags are most frequently plainly visible so that the batteries can be changed as and when required. If this is going to be unlikely to take place, as in the case of wild animals, the tag can have a biodegradable clasp which will break sometime after the probable expiry of the battery.

Some uses for RFID tags are on season tickets so that the holder can pass through the style more quickly than a customer paying by cash. It has uses in security; most of the ID badges you see pinned to jackets have RFID built into them so that security guards do not have to stop and question everybody.

They can be put into wagons that repeatedly cross frontiers so that they do not have to stop for identification. They can be put on windscreens so that, as you pass through a motorway toll post, either your credit card is billed or the charge is added to your company’s monthly statement.

Hospitals utilize them on patients so that they do not lose anyone or misidentify them. RFID tags are helpful in our daily lives but people are concerned about criminals being able to read all this information too readily as well.

RFID is the acknowledged acronym for Radio Frequency IDentification. The core of RFID technology is that every RFID chip or tag is capable of emitting a radio signal on a frequency totally unique to itself.

RFID is the acknowledged acronym for Radio Frequency IDentification. The core of RFID technology is that every RFID chip or tag is capable of emitting a radio signal on a frequency totally unique to itself.

Therefore, every RFID tag must have its own identifying frequency and the RFID tag readers have be sensitive enough to be able to differentiate between frequencies that are only a very tiny bit different from its neighbouring tags. The disparity can be microscopic.

Therefore, the technology has to be sensitive and selective, but not fragile, because the apparatus has to be used on the shop floor and by people who are often in a hurry and in weather that may be inclement.

In order for RFID to work, you need a tag, which is an upmarket kind of bar code and a radio receiver, often called a (tag) reader. However, whereas a bar code can only hold a small amount of information and the bar code reader has to be pointed at it, an RFID tag can store much more information and can be read from a hundred yards or more – even out of line of sight.

Passive tags will only reveal their details when asked to by a reader, whereas an active tag is constantly relaying its contents. Clearly, active RFID tags are more costly than passive tags, because they require a long life battery.

These tags can be utilized to track items from the moment they leave the manufacturer of the goods they describe to the in-bay of the vendor. The tags can then be up-dated or replaced and stored in the warehouse. Once there, RFID readers can keep management informed about what goods are where and if the sell-by-date is impending.

This has ramifications for the amount of stock that a company needs to hold, the quantity of items sold cheap because the sell-by-date is very near and for theft, all of which should increase company profits more than paying for the cost of the tags, the readers, the printers and the software.

At the click of a mouse, bosses will be able to read how much inventory they have in real time and if this is all connected to the checkout cash registers, which are the most and least profitable items. This makes reordering easy . Easy to the point of computerization. For example, when supplies of the top ten percent of the best selling items falls below 1,000 order 10,000 more. Automatically, no questions asked.

RFID has many other uses as well. The ideas outlined above can be applied to farm animals, a call centre’s computers, a fleet of commercial vehicles, an inventory of domestic items, your pets, your car and even your garden furniture. Some individuals who work over a boundary are even having them placed under their skin so that they do not have to wait at customs.

And bear in mind that criminals on early discharge are also tagged. It is the same technology.

How does one go about taking care of one’s property – one’s worldly possessions? Well, the majority of people put their money in the bank, put the jewellery in a safe and insure the rest. But insurance is not really taking care of your possessions, is it? It is taking care of yourself so that you do not have renew them with your own money.

In the old days, and even now, I presume in some places, you would employ a boy to watch over your sheep or cattle or bring them in at night for fear of big cats, wolves or rustlers. These were an early kind of security guard and indeed rich people had and frequently still do have personal body guards.

What if you had a substantial office with a hundred laptop computers – laptops because people had to do field work too? How would you keep track on all those? A car is another good case in point and construction site machinery is being stolen all the time even from under the watchful gaze of (or with the compliance of) private security companies.

So what can you do? Get dogs? That works usually, but they can be poisoned. Install video cameras and passive infra-red movement sensors connected to a control centre? That works and a lot of firms and private houses have it, but it is very expensive.

As a cheap alternative, the police were handing out free pens in the UK, which wrote in invisible ink. The idea was to put your postcode and house number. This ink became visible under a certain kind of light. That is all very well if you have a suspect or found goods.

Bar codes are not realistic, the pen is better. It all comes back to insurance or surveillance.

However, there is another way that is becoming affordable. The concept has been around for approximately 85 years, but it was too pricey to use on anything less significant than an airplane or a battle tank.

I am talking about radio frequency identification or RFID for short. The concept is the same one that aircraft have been using since during the Second World War – a transponder sends out precoded information in answer to a demand from an RF reader.

Details regarding ownership and details of what the item is can be written to an RFID chip also known as a tag and the tag can then be taped inside the item that it is to safeguard.

There are two varieties of tag: the passive and the active. Passive tags will only respond if information is requested by a reader, whereas an active tag is always broadcasting.

Many business people use RFID tagging to keep track of their assets. In the instance of farm animals, most cattle are tagged these days. Most large offices have their IT goods tagged as well and we all know that fashion stores have been tagging clothes for years, although maybe you did not know what that button was that they were taking off at the till.

Individuals are already tagging their dogs, cats and cars and it will not be long before these asset management techniques will be used extensively at home as well. Insurance companies may demand on it.

The desire for healthy food seems to apply equally to people and their pets, because many animal owners prefer to buy organic products to feed man’s best friend. One could be forgiven for being surprised at the large variety of organic dog food on offer on the market. Just as for humans, there are a lot of pet health issues that one could cure or even prevent in the first place by the use of organic pet food.

For instance, organic dog food could reduce the risk of the pet developing skin diseases and allergies. The reason for the positive health impact is the absence of additives, chemicals, colourants and pesticides. Instead there are simply grain extracts and high quality proteins for ingredients of organic dog food. Organic dog food also contains more nutrients, which is reflected in the higher levels of energy and the normal weight of the pet.

Normal dog food often causes diabetes and excess weight with all the concomitant problems that accompany these illnesses: back ailment, organ failure and decreased mobility. How can organic dog food help here? Well, organic food items for pets do not contain bulk fillers, they are nutrient-packed products that create energy not fat deposits. Moreover, it is best and a lot easier to prevent health issues than to try to treat them afterwards.

A more efficient digestion and a stronger immunity system are the other main benefits that come with the feeding of organic dog food. Due to the lack of chemicals usually mixed in regular pet food, your dog will not vomit or experience gas or diarrhea. A healthier metabolism is what will result from a healthy diet. Moreover, the quality of the nutritional substances in organic dog food, boosts the immunity functions, thereby reducing the risks of infection and all sorts of specific diseases that affect dogs on an everyday basis.

In general, veterinarian experts claim that organic dog food significantly extends the life of any animal, to say nothing of the fact that it will pass through old age a lot better. It is quite common that pet owners who choose organic dog food, are also interested in eating organic foods themselves, sticking to clean natural products that enhance bodily functions and avoid toxins and disease.

Ask your local dog food provider about organic dog food and if there is none available at your local shop, try to order it online. There are many web sites that offer such products at fairly decent prices.

One last tip, be very wary of dried dog food, no matter what it says on the packet. I used to have a dog that stayed at home alone during the day, while I went to work. I didn’t like to leave ‘wet’ food, because of flies, bacteria and vermin, so I bought dry food, which would not deteriorate during the day. However, within six years she had diabetes, which meant that I had to inject her with insulin every morning. The veterinary said that it was very common for dogs fed only on biscuits to get diabetes, so check with your vet first or feed organic wet food.

Keeping the attention of your dog while training is not always easy. Dogs can be easily distracted, and it is important to not allow the dog training sessions to be sabotaged by boredom. Making dog training fun for the dog and the human alike is essential to creating a happy, well adjusted and well trained dog.

Providing random positive stimuli during the day is a great way to keep the interest of the dog. Doing things the dog enjoys, like walking in the park, riding in the car, and playing with other dogs, are good ways to keep the dog’s attention, but you must reward him for small successes.

For instance, in order to reward the dog for coming to you when you call him, ask the dog to come to you, without giving any clues about a walk, a car ride, or other treats.

After the dog has come to you and obediently sat down, attach the lead and begin the reward. This can be either the afore-mentioned walk in the park, ride in the car, or anything else the dog likes to do.

Providing some kind of reward, whether a treat, a special outing, or just a scratch behind the ears, every time the dog does something you want, is a good method to maintain your dog’s motivation while you are dog training.

If your dog knows something good is going to occur every time he follows your commands, he will be more motivated to do want you tell him every time.

Distraction training.

When training a dog, it is vital to not allow distractions ruin the training. The dog must be trained to ignore distractions, such as other people, other dogs, other animals and loud noises, and concentrate on what is being taught These kinds of distractions can also be used as rewards when training your dog to come when told.

For example, if your dog like romping with other dogs, whether it be in a park or with the neighbour’s dogs, let him play with those other dogs. Then go into the park or yard and call your dog.

When he comes to you, provide lots of praise, treats and other rewards, then immediately let the dog to go back to playing with his friends. Repeat this several times and praise the dog each time he comes over to you.

The dog will quickly learn that coming to you means good things (treats and praise) and not bad ones (being taken away from the park).

This so-called distraction training is one of the most difficult things for your dog to learn, because dogs are social animals by nature, and leaving the pack is one of the hardest things you can ask your dog to do. Most dogs will be understandably reluctant to leave their doggy companions, but it is vital to persist in dog training.

Training the dog to come to you when you call may require some creativity on your behalf at first. For example, waving one of his favourite toys, or a lure, is a good way to get your dog’s attention and put the focus back on you. If your dog has been clicker trained, a quick click can be a good motivator as well in dog training.

Once the dog begins to become used to coming when called, you can begin to reduce and then stop the visual cues and focus on getting the dog to respond to your voice alone. It is vital that the dog responds to voice commands alone, since you will not always have a toy or other lure to hand.

Dog owners will say that there is no given method for choosing a good name for a new dog. Whether they have to think of girl or boy dog names, usually they will choose something that sounds cool or a name they like rather than putting some thought into what the name actually means. Popular boy dog names have a variety of meanings, but more often than not the meaning will not suit the dog it is given to. Below is a quick guide to the top five boy dog names and what they really mean.

Generally, first thing you have to do when you obtain a new dog or puppy is choose a name for him or her. For most dog owners, this doesn’t require much thought. They just choose a dog name at random and that is the name by which the poor hound will be known forever. However, there is something you should think about when going through dog names in order to make sure that you choose a suitable one.

Firstly, dogs can sense attitude and tone of voice better than we can. If you choose a dog name for comedy value or after someone you dislike, your dog will see straight through you. As a result, their attitudes may change or they may refuse to respond to your commands. Dogs’ names should mean something but should not be detrimental to their development so you should really take the decision of the dog name seriously.

Although dogs are very intelligent animals, they can’t process the same amount of information that we can. Therefore, dog names ought not be more than two syllables long. If they are more than that, most dogs will not respond. Max, Sam, Becky, Lady, Molly and the like are excellent dog names because they are short and the names are easily heard. They understand these dog names and that will help your probability of training them successfully.

However, dogs’ names should help them form an identity of their own. Common names don’t really allow them to do that, so finding something simple but unusual can help their characters a great deal without damaging their ability to respond to a command.

Max: This is probably the greatest boy dog name and the meaning is surely the reason why most people pick it for their hound. It literally means “the best”. After all, every dog owner thinks that their dog is the best.

Jake: Jake is short for Jacob, which means “victor”. This is an apt boy dog name, if your puppy has taken over the house within moments of setting feet inside of it!

Buddy: Buddy is a familiarization of Budd, which means “messenger”. This boy dog name could be apt for a farm dog or one you might possibly train to retrieve the newspaper from the porch in the morning. It is a very popular boy dog name throughout America.

Bailey: The boy dog name Bailey is French and means “steward”. This is fairly suitable if your dog is responsible and sensible, so it is probably suitable for a Labrador or collie puppy, for example!

Sam: Sam seems to mean “an answer to prayers”. This is a good boy dog name for sedate dogs that are easy to train and are largely quiet!

Very few people consult the meaning of names when choosing boy dog names, so instead of going with your first thought, it may be worth taking the time to choose a dog’s name that really suits your dog. It costs nothing to spend a little time in thought about your dog’s name.

The spitting cobra is one of the most peculiar species of snake as it not only has a deadly bite but it also sprays venom into the eyes of prey and aggressors alike. Contact with the eyes can be very painful and even blinding, therefore, if you accidentally get cobra snake venom in your eyes, wash them out immediately so as to prevent permanent damage to the tissue.

The King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is also unusual in this large family of snakes (elapidae) because it feeds almost exclusively on other snakes with mice and small birds also making up part of its diet.

The King Cobra sets another record in terms of size: it can get to nearly twenty feet long, which makes it the largest venomous snake in the world. The most recent discovery of a new cobra species was made in 2003, when a specimen was identified at a London Zoo as part of an illegal shipment of exotic pets.

DNA studies revealed that this new species of snake is similar to the red spitting cobra but has different genes. It seems to originate from an area between Sudan and Egypt and it has been called the ‘Nubian Spitting Cobra’.

Though highly dangerous when it is threatened cobras will not attack if you leave them alone, although the spit is very accurate for about two meters. Compared to the strike of a rattlesnake, the cobra is fairly slow in its attack and furthermore, many bites prove to be blank, that is without venom.

A study conducted on Malaysian cobra snake victims indicates that only 55% of the wounds involved venom release and the same statistics indicate a mortality rate of 10% for people bitten, since the toxins injected into the blood of the prey devastate the nerves (neurotoxin) inducing respiratory failure half an hour after being bitten, giving you 30 minutes to seek an antidote.

The colouration is variable from light green-grey to black, while juveniles are yellow and black banded. This snake can find a habitat all over south-eastern Asia.

You have to destroy heart worm, fleas and other parasites in dogs whenever they raise their ugly heads by using the appropriate medication on them. Many products are available to protect dogs from heart worms, fleas and other parasites such as hook worms, whip worms, round worms, lice, ticks etc.

Of the heart worms, fleas and other parasites, fleas can produce a super-sensitive reaction in the affected dog. Animals infested with fleas scratch their skin very vigorously. Frequently the scratching becomes so severe that the skin becomes super-sensitive and dermatitis is the result in the scratched areas of skin.

The result is often that the animal can not lie down for long or sleep comfortably due to the constant bites by the fleas. Therefore, the animal looks as if has some severe skin disease. If the your dog is not properly attended to for these flea bites, there will often be secondary bacterial invasions in these sites and there may even be a rotten smell emanating from your dog’s affected skin.

You have to inspect your pet closely in order prevent a serious infestation of fleas. However, it is essential to prevent such a serious outbreak as they are extremely distressing to your dog. Similarly, the skin of the animal needs to be inspected often for the presence of ticks and lice. In order to do this effectively, you must inspect the dog’s skin by separating the dog’s hairs. The easiest way to achieve this is by slowly back-combing or ruffling the animal’s hair.

Usually, if your animal is anaemic, and he is not infested with fleas, you need to check for hookworm. Symptoms of hookworm are anaemia, loose stools and a pot belly. The dog’s owner may notice these symptoms themselves, however, to be honest, the dog needs to have a routine health check at the vet’s involving faecal and hematological tests.

There are many commercial products available on the market, some of which are effective for dealing with all these conditions in a single dose. Drugs like ivermectin are highly efficacious and are obtainable in injection, oral and solution forms. The latter should be applied directly on the dog’s skin. These drugs can lead to the prevention of the above conditions too.

So, the best strategy to follow is to keep a keen eye on your dog. This could easily be carried out at bath time or / and when you are grooming him. You can use an anti-flea and anti-tick shampoo, which will keep these pests under control, if used regularly. Couple this with a regular grooming with a lice comb and a flea collar should keep your pet lice, tick and flea free.

We all know that it is not unusual for pet owners to permit their pets to sleep with them at night. In deed, one third of pet owners have at some point, allowed their pets to sleep on their beds. Dogs provide a companionship that can’t be given by any other kind of animal. However, this doesn’t mean to say that some people do not let their cats or another pets sleep with them too.

It is made easier too by dogs having a sleep pattern that is very similar to our own. Dogs often trust their masters completely, which makes them a bit more relaxed during the night. This explains why most dogs fall asleep easily and later on, go into a deep sleep where REM sleep activities can occur. In fact, once a dog enters this stage, the owner may need to call them several times before they can truly be woken up.

I’m sure, lots of us have already seen a dog ‘running’ during sleep or, at times, barking with his eyes closed too. These dogs are said to be dreaming. Breathing patterns can also be observed among dogs while they are asleep. For example, there are breeds which breathe heavily and there are breeds which breathe more lightly. The heavy breathers are much more likely to snore than those which do not breathe so heavily.

Dogs which snore can be rather a nuisance during the night, depending on the degree and frequency of the occurrence of this phenomenon. Like with humans, there are various considerations why dogs snore. Most though have to do with the obstruction of the passage of air in the throat caused by the collapse of certain areas along the throat. The same as in humans.

A dog that snores very badly ought to be checked for various issues to determine which treatment can be best provided. Some dogs are especially prone to specific allergic reactions that cause constriction in the windpipe. It may also be that there is some excess tissue in the areas that are preventing correct breathing. It is best if a veterinarian checks on various factors through careful evaluation of the dog’s anatomical features and general physical symptoms.

Maybe, your dog is overweight. Like with humans, obese dogs are more likely to snore during the night. This is because they have more flesh surrounding their throats. Therefore, they have excess tissue that hangs around the throat which can potentially cause the obstructions. Once this problem is corrected, the risk of snoring will be decreased. This would not only be healthy for your dogs, you may actually enjoy nights of restful sleep too.

The facial features of the dog in general affect the amount of snoring too. For example, some dogs have squashed faces which restricts their nasal passages to a greater or lesser degree. The construction of their nasal passages also largely contributes to their difficulty of breathing. They are very much like humans with a cold, who have to breathe using only twenty-five percent of their nostril capacity. Dog breeds with shorter faces need to expend lots of effort to breathe properly. It takes them more effort to breathe and they are also more likely to snore loudly.

Minor surgery can afford your dog great relief. Be sure though that, before any decision is made, you are well educated about the potential risks and consequences of surgery to stop a dog snoring. Most procedures are irreversible, so careful thought must be given to any operation you allow. In fact, it is best to accept the guidelines provided by your veterinary doctor.

So, you may be wondering, what is in a dog’s name? Just what does it matter what your female dog’s name is? The answer is perhaps a lot, because your dog’s name defines him or her in the eyes of your neighbours, especially if you have a rather small, puny dog. For what a small dog lacks in size it can make up for in attitude. For a smaller dog, being cute will get her everywhere. But what is a cute dog without a cute dog’s name?

Cute dog names are really meant for female dogs or bitches. Abby, for example is a very cute dog name. When you put that together with a mental image, you probably see a little Westie or a Labrador pup romping around on a lawn in your mind’s eye. Other cute female dog names are Queenie, Beauty, Becky and Blackie. All of these cute dog names seem to embody a bundle of fur that has a sweet nature and just loves cuddles. They all allude to a pretty appearance and a very happy dog owning experience.

However, there seems to be very few cute dog names out there for male dogs. This could be because it reduces the masculine image that male dogs are supposed to have. Still, there are some male cute dog names about. Bobby, Casper, Patch and Spot are all cute male dog names that have the same effect as the female ones do. However, you do have to make sure that you have the right kind of male dog to give a cute dog name to, because if you get it wrong, he will sound ridiculous.

Cute dog names can be very appropriate for male and female members alike of certain breeds and can help to develop a lovable personality, because of the affection it will be shown. But be warned, you do not want to leave your dog open to ridicule so choose when to use cute dog names very carefully.

While dogs are quite intelligent animals, they cannot really process the same amount of information that humans can. As a result, dog names should not be more than two syllables. If they are more than that, it is seldom that a dog will actually respond. Max, Sam, Lady, Molly and the like are excellent dog names because they are short and the syllables are hard. They easily respond to dog names like those and it can increase your prospects of training them.

Moreover, dogs names can assist them shape an identity of their own. Common names do not allow them to do that, so finding a short, simple but unusual name can help their characters a great deal without hurting their ability to obey a command.

I am willing to bet money that most pet owners do not consider the factors outlined above when thinking of dog names for a new pet. Instead, dog names are chosen at on a whim, but it is worth putting a bit more thought into it, for your dogs sake if for no other reason.

The Florida snakes, together with the turtles, lizards, alligators and other reptiles are all part of a complicated wildlife structure that plays an incredible role in the maintenance of Florida’s ecosystem. There are many species of Florida snakes. There are forty-four species living in an incredibly varied habitat, ranging from salt marshes and fresh water marshes to dry uplands and coastal mangrove swamps to residential areas.

Only six Florida snakes are venomous, and they happily coexist with their non-poisonous cousins, even venturing into towns and cities too. The best way to stay out of trouble with snakes is to care enough to learn about their morphology and therefore become able to distinguish between these Florida snakes. Avoidance is the best approach a human being can adopt in relation to snakes.

The Coral snake and pit vipers are the most dangerous Florida snakes. They can be identified by a wide range of characteristics. Pit vipers include the Rattlesnake, the Cottonmouth and the Copperhead. They all have vertical eye pupils, a v-shaped head and facial pits: one between the eyes and nostrils and the others on each side of the head.

The poison of these Florida snakes is haemotoxic, which means that their venom attacks the red blood cells, destroying the wall of the blood vessel and causing uncontrolled hemorrhage. Coral snakes on the other hand use neurotoxic venom, with the toxins in the venom acting on the body nerves and inducing paralysis.

Most of the snake bites reported every year in the United States are attacks by Florida snakes or by rattlesnakes to be precise. Because their venom spreads rapidly through the body, the victim will almost certainly die within thirty minutes without the immediate injection of anti-venom.

A big exception in this group of Florida snakes is the copperheads, the venom of which rarely requires an antidote. Their toxins are the least potent and so they are considered t be the least dangerous of the poisonous Florida snakes.

Because of the threat they pose. poisonous snakes are the first kind to attract attention, however the most widespread of Florida snakes is the black racer, a non-toxic species that relies on very sharp fangs to capture its prey.

Despite the fact that home owners usually try to eradicate snakes from their gardens, specialists point out that, without them, rodents would soon be so numerous as to be an even greater cause for alarm.

Therefore, unless there are any special reasons for worry, like snakes nesting in large numbers in your garden or outhouses, there is no reason to interfere with the lives of these usually shy, useful animals.

I couldn’t believe it- I, the committed cat person, who had thought of every possible reason never to own a dog, who hated the smell and the jumping and the licking and the mucky mess of them- I was rescuing a dog. There I was, speeding along the highway, following my friend Jody who had *my* new dog on his scooter. I’d slept on it for two days and finally decided that I would take the little mutt in. I examined the specimen on Jody’s scooter. She was shivering, a fur covered bag of bones, her nose jutted into the wind and for some reason she was constantly licking the air. Lick Lick lick. With each flick of her little pink tongue I thought to myself, “What the heck am I doing?”

She had been abandoned outside a convenience store. I had passed her a million times since the first time I saw her, two weeks before. I’d taken her food and water, and finally decided that I just couldn’t let her die. But how would I do it? I hate responsibility and being tied down. I loved having a cat- all I had to do was put a bunch of food and water down for her, and a litter box, and she was good to go. What was I going to do with this dog?

Over the next several weeks, Dresden (my mutts named after a German city that’s been fire bombed) seemed to prove every fear that I had about adopting a dog. She peed on the floor. She chewed things up. She slept all day while I was gone, then when I got home exhausted, she had enough energy to power Manhattan. She kept me up all night whining and wanting to play. She cried terribly when I tried to leave, and would always try to bolt out the door when I left for work. I liked her, or at least I felt guilty for not liking her, which is almost like liking her, right?

Cut to two months later- I’m walking Dresden on the beach, and can’t let her off the leash because she’s in heat. What do I see ahead? ANOTHER DRESDEN! Except this Dresden is male.

Now let me tell you- my dog is weird looking. To see what must have been her twin is a strange coincidence, unless someone went up and down the coast abandoning puppies. Which is probably what happened. Let’s just say that male Dresden took a fancy to female Dresden, who was in heat and attracting every dog within a 30 mile radius. I ran home, and this little male dog, though limping and terribly skinny (more of a skeleton than a dog) followed us the whole way. I put Dresden inside, and took out a bowl of food for the male dog- a dog-lover trying to help a stray? No, my plan was to lure him back to the beach and while he was distracted by the food- RUN!

I did it. Three times. It didn’t work.

Finally it was time for me to go to work. Male Dresden was outside, howling at female Dresden, who was inside whining. I left. When I came home, male Dresden was inside the gate, laying on a makeshift bed, a bowl of food next to him. My landlord had taken him in thinking he was my dog! Aggggh! And fed him! Now he would never leave!

Every time I left the house, I had to fight off the amorous male Dresden who was trying to you know what the female Dresden (who is now happily spayed).

I took the little sucker in. Named him Romulus, after the mythical founder of Rome who was suckled by a wolf.

And a miracle happened. Shoes stopped being torn to shreds. When I arrived home, Dresden and Romulus greeted me with that special canine welcome frenzy, then they curled up together and.went to sleep. They had been playing all day. They had no need to keep me up all night. When I left for work, they both smiled wagging— oh good, finally she’s gone, let the games begin! When I took them to the beach, I didn’t have to throw sticks or run with them- they ran circles around each other, and were awfully cute doing it.

Two dogs are better than one! I’m a cat person. If you asked me if you should adopt a dog, I’d say no. But if you asked me if you should adopt two dogs, I’d say hell yes.

Advice from a cat person who's gone to the dogs

Advice from a cat person who’s gone to the dogs

I was a committed cat person, but due to some interesting circumstances, I now have two dogs. I would never have considered getting a dog before for the following reasons: Dogs smell bad. Dogs have to be walked every day to do their business and exercise, which must be a pain in the butt. Dogs seem to get very depressed when their ‘person’ isn’t nearby. Dogs tear things up and destroy the house. I’ve found that though I was right about some of these things, I was wrong about others.

#1 Dogs smell bad. I hate to say it, but this is 100% true. Dogs use scent as a form of communication- for example, if doggy A went prowling around on the beach and found a dead fish, he would roll in it, paying special attention to the shoulder region, really grinding away at that dead fish so he could have the full benefit of it’s unique aroma. Then he would bring this lovely scent back to the pack (or in this case, back to the apartment) to brag to the others. My dogs seem very dejected when I wash their carefully chosen perfume off. My cat, on the other hand, wouldn’t be caught dead smelling like a dead fish.

#2 Dogs have to be walked everyday, to do their business and for exercise (TRUE) which is a pain in the butt (FALSE!). I used to watch my dog-having friends with pity. We’d be at a pub or hanging out at someone’s house when they’d sigh, get up, and say ‘well, I’ve got to go let my dog out or he’ll pee on the floor’ and off they’d go, leaving a fun night behind them. What I didn’t understand was that they wanted to get home to their dog. I’ve only had my dogs for 5 months and I’ll tell you right now- after 8 hours away, I miss those mangy little mutts. Also, sometimes it’s downright handy to have an excuse to get out of a boring social situation.

I thought I would hate having to walk my dog all the time- but I love it! I actually know my neighbors and it gives me more exercise and time outside. Before I had my dogs, I never went for walks. Now I do at least twice a day, and it’s one of the healthiest, most relaxing habits that I have. Sometimes we need a reason to do what’s good for us. I’m glad I have two. My cat, however, never gets me out of the house. In fact, she seems to send me subliminal messages convincing me to stay in.

#3 Dogs seem to be very depressed when their ‘person’ isn’t nearby. True. This was probably my biggest reason for not wanting a dog. Most people love the warm welcome they get from their dog after they’ve been gone all day, but I found it depressing. If the dog was so happy to see them come home, weren’t they depressed all day while the person was gone? This troubled me for the first month that I had a dog. I would be out all day, busy, while she was home all day, sleeping. Then when I came home, she wanted to play. I’ve found the perfect solution, which is…drum roll please.TWO DOGS! Ever since I got my second dog, we all seem to be on the same wave-length when it comes to activity level. For more information on how two dogs are better than one, please click here.

#4 Dogs tear things up and destroy the house. This one seems to be true for the first month. I’ve come home to my fair share of destroyed slippers. A good number of my personal items bare canine teeth marks. But I found that after the first month, we reached a compromise- my dog had a better sense of what I didn’t want her to chew on, and I have a better sense of what not to leave within her reach. I say a month because that’s how long I think it takes for a new pet and pet owner to reach some sort of understanding. But it’s probably not a coincidence that my stuff stopped getting chewed up right around the time that I got my second dog. Once again, two dogs seem to be better than one. I’m pretty sure that my two dogs play and chew on each other all day while I’m gone.

So there you have it- some of the common misconceptions that cat people have about dogs, and whether or not they’re true.

Though not as venomous as other species, the copperhead snake causes the majority of snake-bites in the US. The copperhead can be recognized by its stubby shape and the clear distinction between the neck and the rest of the body although the cross bands that make up the overall pattern make classification possible too.

Copperhead snakes have pale bellies, which makes it look very similar to its background, but their colourisation also be whitish sometimes. There are obvious spots or pits on the heads of these animals that appear like tiny dark specks. There is also a rather vague stripe on its head behind its eyes; less prominent on the top, the stripe gets a lot darker towards the sides of the snake’s head.

Copperheads live in a wide variety of habitats. They can be found under rocks, in woods and on river banks or in pond areas. Their choice of abode is dictated by the presence of prey, as they like to live on frogs, small rodents, cicadas, lizards, caterpillars and anything else that is no match for their size.

The most usual hidey-holes for the copperhead, wood piles, stone slabs, walls, debris and abandoned or ruined buildings are the most common, which explains why people come across copperheads so often in such areas. The active months of the year for these snakes are in the spring and summer for as long as the weather stays warm. After that they go into hibernation.

Copperhead snakes use the dens in which they spend the winter year after year and usually there are large numbers of other individuals in hibernation together. In summer time when it is too hot outside, the copperhead will stay in the shade during the day and hunt at night. On lovely warm days, this snake will lie in the sun on rocks or wood debris. The young of copperheads are born live and are not hatched; their number ranges between one and fourteen, with the mating period extending ’till mid autumn.

The bites of copperhead snakes must have immediate medical care since they are not only very painful but they may also lead to permanent scarring and tissue loss. Avoid copperhead snakes when you come across them, since many people get bitten when trying to kill or handle them.

Snakes will not harm you unless they feel threatened, then, you will become the victim of a fierce attack by a creature that is just as afraid of us as we are of them. Statistics reveal that these snakes have the highest incidence in bite frequency in the United States, because Copperhead snakes attack quite out of the blue without giving threatening warnings like other species.

Fashion seems to decree everything these days. From what you wear to what you name your dog, everything you do is decreed by the need to be fashionable. Cute dog names are hard to come by and even harder to choose. This is because as soon as something is in fashion, than it is out again.

Who would want to pick a cute dog name that may not be fashionable tomorrow? So, people tend to play it safe, which is why the same names have been around for so long. To try and break that cycle, five cool dog names are listed below with the reasons why you should pick one of them for your dog.

Phoenix: What could be cuter than a bird that goes up in flames, but then rises from the ashes? Phoenix is one of the cool dog names that will never go out of fashion because it is based in history. It has a timeless air about it, which has somewhat surprisingly failed to boost its popularity.

Star: Star is one of the cool dog names because it has so many meanings that you can have a hard time finding out where to start. A star in the sky is a phenomenon and a star can refer to someone that outperforms in a particular field. It is a high form of praise and thus is definitely a cool dog name.

Lady: Lady is one of the most popular dog names but it is also one of the cool dog names because of the Disney cartoon film, Lady and the Tramp, which was a massive hit. The film made the name popular but also gave it some credibility. In this case, popularity comes second to coolness.

Elvis: The coolest of cool dog names. Elvis Presley was undoubtedly cool and remains cool today even after his death. It is infinitely cool to name your dog after such a tremendous star who never goes out of fashion himself.

Shadow: There is a dark and mysterious quality about Shadow that makes it a cool dog name. It would be best used on a big breed of dog however, because it wouldn’t have the same strong effect with a small one.

Whatever cute dog names you consider for your pooch, it is one sure-fire way to give them an identity of their own and make them memorable in the eyes of others. .

There are not many places in the world that haven’t been colonised by snakes and other reptiles. Snakes are even to be found in cities, although it is only the friendlier ones that tend to survive our wrath. However, if you want to find some of the more uncommon snakes, you could look in parks and fields, on beaches or in rivers and ponds and even in the sea, depending on where you live, of course as sea snakes tend to inhabit warmer, tropical waters.

You will need to be very alert and train your eyes to spot even the slightest movement. Wear clothing of dull, drab colours and move very slowly, stopping often to listen out for movement in the grass or bushes. In the beginning, you will have many false hopes, until you learn to differentiate between the sounds of the various animals that live or hunt in the grass.

Snakes are not easy to locate, because most of the adventurous snakes get killed by frightened (and often ignorant) humans, but good advice is to look for relatively damp areas in arid regions and, on the other hand, dry spots in damp areas. Look for where their prey might congregate. For instance, near water for toads and frogs. Watch for frightened lizards or birds fleeing for their lives. And listen out for geckos warning each other of the presence of a predator.

If you have to disturb anything, at least don’t damage it and make sure you put it back as you found it. Two useful tools while out looking for snakes are binoculars (for tree snakes) and a snake-hook, which should also be used for moving bits of debris so that you don’t risk getting bitten by a snake or stung by a scorpion. A camera, a torch and a notebook and pen are more or less essential, depending on how seriously you treat your interest in herpetology.

You could also take a rule or tape to measure your specimens and a few plastic bags and boxes to hold them while you are doing so. Do not kill anything and do not take anything home with you either! Besides it not being right to wander into their territory and cause mayhem, it is frequently against the law too. Be very wary of picking up any snake that you cannot 100% positively identify as non-venomous. You could be miles from anywhere and will probably not have anti-venom with you. Since many snakes can kill within 30 minutes, you would probably die.

So, to summarize, go looking for snakes by all means. However, make your search calmly and wear inconspicuous clothing. Moreover, wear strong, hiking boots to afford you some protection where you are most vulnerable and do not move anything unnecessarily. Use a snake-hook to move things if you need to; a tape, torch, camera, notebook and pen to record your experience and/or findings and a couple of clear plastic receptacles just in case you feel the need to pick something up.

I hope you enjoy your search for snakes and other reptiles, but remember that they are not friendly and they are definitely not pets and be wary of bites especially when your search is not taking place in the gardens of a hospital!

by Colin Jones

The spitting cobra is one of the most peculiar species of snake as it not only has a deadly bite but it also sprays venom into the eyes of prey and aggressors alike. Contact with the eyes can be very painful and even blinding, therefore, if you accidentally get cobra snake venom in your eyes, wash them out immediately so as to prevent permanent damage to the tissue.

The King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is also unusual in this large family of snakes (elapidae) because it feeds almost exclusively on other snakes with mice and small birds also making up part of its diet.

The King Cobra is also unique because of its size – it can reach 5.85m (almost 20 feet) in length, which makes it the longest poisonous snake in the world. The latest discovery of a new species of cobra was made in 2003 when it was identified by London Zoo as part of an illegal shipment of exotic pets.

According to DNA studies this new species of snake is similar to the red spitting cobra but different in terms of genes. It appears to have originated in an area between Sudan and Egypt, and it was given the name of the ‘Nubian Spitting Cobra’.

Though highly dangerous when it senses a threat, a cobra will not attack if you leave it in peace, although the venomous spit can travel very accurately for two meters. If compared to the strike of a rattlesnake, the cobra is pretty slow in attack, and many bites prove blank, that is without envenomation.

According to a study conducted on Malaysian cobra snake victims only 55% of the bites involved venom release and the same statistics indicate a mortality rate of 10% for people bitten, since the toxins injected into the blood of the prey destroy the nerves (neurotoxin) , which induces respiratory failure half an hour after being bitten, giving you 30 minutes to get help.

The colouration of this snake is variable from light green-grey to black, whereas juveniles have alternate yellow and black bands. This snake is to be found all over south-eastern Asia.
