The way to deal with situations which could reasonably be expected to cause panic is to have a plan of action firmly entrenched in your mind already, so that in impact you merely have to follow routine. This is how people are taught in the military yet in rescue organizations. They have procedures yet routines but they practice them until they get second nature.

This is not so easy in a domestic situation especially with regard to a house fire – you cannot realistically pretend that you have a house fire but you cannot merely set fire to bits of it either, so the next best thing is to have a checklist to prevent fires occurring yet to go through the checklist on a ordinary basis – say, weekly.

Many house fires begin in the kitchen, so you could begin there:

1] Is the oven clean? The rings and the oven have to be clean or the fragments can catch fire.

2] Are the curtains so long that possible become blown onto a hot ring if the window is open? This is a frequent cause of kitchen fires, especially if you hang new curtains in the winter or spring and do not realize that the wind can blow them into the rings until the summer whilst you open the windows

3] Are the flexes on your electrical devices all right? Check for fraying or wear and tear. Are any of the electrical sockets overloaded? It is not a good idea to use adapters in the kitchen – stick to the principle of one plug in one socket and a pretty good habit is to unplug anything you are not using, even the kettle or the coffee percolator

The home’s heating system is a fire risk, after all it is meant to be hot, so check it:

1] All heaters ought to be switched off while there is no one to keep an eye on them, with the exception of central heating. Turn bar fires off if you go out or go to bed and always fix a guard in front of open fires if you leave the room. ‘Fix’ a guard with clips, do not only stand one in front of the fire because a falling log or lump of coal can knock a guard over.

2] Can curtains or other textiles blow into the fire or get heated to the point of combustion? Occasionally, people pull their chair or couch up to the fire but fall asleep or go to bed leaving the chair to heat up.

3] Is the chimney clean? Soot can and does catch fire so have your chimney cleared or inspected regularly.

4] Likewise with the furnace, is it clean and soot-free?

5] If you use gas, are the bottles stored outside the house?

5) Is the furnace been wiped and inspected every year?

6) Are the propane tanks yet fuels stored outside the house?

Then there are general points:

1] Do you have a house fire safety evacuation drill? Do you have a muster purpose, so that everybody knows that everyone is out of the house and safe?

2] Are electric leads, cables and extension leads in good condition? Do you have any under carpets? If so, you ought to not really, so check them for wear.

3] Are any sockets overloaded? Are all devices that are not in use unplugged?

4] Do you have smoke detectors? Do you check that they are working? Do you have a spare battery in case one fails?

Most people have learned a fire safety drill at some time during their lives. Kids learn it in school and adults learn it at work, yet how many individuals put it into practice it at home? If it is worth practicing a fire safety code at work, it must be worth practicing one at home too.

You could adapt and implement the fire safety code from work for your home use, and just like in work, you will have to make certain that everybody in your household knows and knows your fire safety code. Adopting a home fire safety code will hugely increase your family’s chances of surviving a home fire.

The specialists at the fire station are known as Fire Prevention Officers. Fire prevention officers frequently give talks on fire prevention techniques at schools, offices and seminars. It is also often possible to have a one-on-one interview with a fire prevention officer but they will also visit you in your home for more specific advice in some regions.

The chief fire prevention officer has to train new recruits and schedule public buildings for check ups depending on their location, age and usage. You could use the same criteria to assess the risks in your own home.

For example, older houses tend to have more timber in them and smaller windows which means that it may catch fire more easily, it might burn faster and it might be more problematic to escape from because of the smaller windows, which may even be jammed.

Only to give you an concept of what a building’s fire code can be like, I will give some examples below. You can apply some of these concepts to the ‘fire code’ for your home, according to what sort of building you occupy.

Firstly, buildings in numerous countries have maximum occupancy numbers for every residential building, particularly for commercially rented buildings. You may not just keep partitioning accommodation in order to cram in more tenants (and get more rent). This maximum is a strict law and must be adhered to.

If you live in or rent out a commercial property, then all exits ought to be clearly labeled with lit signs which can be seen through smoke. They also have to have a battery back-up in case the wires get burned through. These buildings also have to have a certain number of fire extinguishers and there might even have to be a number of different sorts, eg: water hoses, sand buckets, fire blankets and regular extinguishers.

There also have to be smoke detectors and a building-wide fire alarm system. Make sure that flammable materials are stored in a safe place and that fire drills are carried out regularly. Everybody should know their muster point and which doors should be closed and which ones left open.

Many of the suggestions above are true laws for commercial and some residential buildings, so if you do not want to fall foul of the law, be sure you know your obligations.

A family journey in an RV or ‘recreational vehicle’ can be great fun, and one of the ways that you can try to make sure that it goes well, is to plan for as many eventualities as possible. This involves taking a few safety items or safety tools that are helpful for an RV trip.

If you are journeying far from the beaten track, then adequate supplies of food and water are the prime concerns naturally. You will also have to have adequate suitable clothing for the season of the year and the place you are travelling in.

However, keep in mind, that some locations are chilly at night no matter what time of the year it is, so a few jumpers or light jackets will come in useful if you are driving in the mountains, in the north (in the northern hemisphere) or along the coast.

Once you have the prerequisites to survive, there are a few luxury safety items, that you might find useful. The first of these is the cell phone. There might or may not be adequate coverage where you are going, but the likelihood are that it will work somewhere near, if you have to use it. Be certain that you have a charger that works in the RV and a hands free kit if possible.

The luxury of all luxuries is a GPS unit – Global Positioning System – so that you do not get too lost, if you are out in the wilderness or even in some huge, unknown metropolis looking for the hotel you booked into over the Internet for a couple days break from the road.

If you are renting your RV, there is probably a GPS system on board, but if you are taking your own vehicle, you may consider purchasing a mobile phone that also has GPS built into it. These hand held devices are plenty accurate to get you back on track.

However, they are electrical devices and as such can break down at any moment, especially when you especially require them, so make sure that you have a current road map as well.

While you are on holiday, the weather is quite important – in fact it can make or break a holiday, so why not take a portable weather radio with you? A weather radio is exactly what it implies. It is a radio that specializes in picking up weather broadcasts – especially local ones.

This is very convenient indeed, particularly if where you are heading is not experiencing the sort of weather you are searching for. It allows you to modify your destination without having to get there first. These functional devices often come with other tools built in like a torch and a timer (alarm clock).

Make sure that your RV has an adequate set of vehicle repair tools including gloves and safety goggles. Gloves are practical for keeping your hands clean if you have a repair to make and safety goggles come in very handy if you have to swap a wheel in a dust, rain or snow storm.

The last thing on our list, but not the least important, is a good First Aid Kit. When choosing a First Aid kit, comprehensive is definitely better than small.

Most boys and an increasing number of girls want to shoot. Not everybody wants to kill something but that is neither here nor there. The test for shooters is to be able to hit the target whenever required. Gun safety is important, obviously, because guns can be used as lethal weapons, but at the end of the day, a gun is just a tool but tools can be used and mis-used.

Guns though are specific tools, as are all tools really, but they have such an evocative reputation. Some people are violently against them yet others uphold their legal right to hold them in a world where a higher percentage of criminals hold guns than innocent civilians.

Criminals will not toe the line by definition, but for the rest of us gun holders, it is quite vital to demonstrate that we are responsible – that we know how to be safe towards others with our firearm. It is a of dispelling fear in non-shooters and displaying that we are not all red-neck, gung ho idiots.

So, the first law is: always to regard a gun as if it were loaded. You never, ever point a gun at anyone in jest. Several famous individuals have been killed in shooting accidents. OK, frequently when they were stoned, but ‘being out of it’ is no excuse whatsoever for behaving irresponsibly. Do not point a gun at anyone you do not want to threaten – and that means threaten really big time!

There is never, ever any valid excuse for having to point a gun at anyone in jest or accidentally. Whilst loading a gun, it should be held so that the barrel is pointing away from anyone, even yourself.

If you want to pass a gun to someone, either you have to know them well or you do not do it. Whether the gun is loaded or not. The number of times I have been handed a loaded gun is incredible and I cannot put it down to my charisma.

If you must show off your gun, unload it in front of your friend and check that it is unloaded in front of your friend. If he or she does not know about guns, at least you are demonstrating how to check the safety of the gun and that you are responsible.

One means of demonstrating or reminding yourself that a gun is safe is to fasten a ribbon to a blank case and put that in the cylinder of a revolver and take the magazine out of a semi-automatic. Always hand a revolver over for viewing with the cylinder flipped out so that the person can establish that the chambers are empty bar the one with the ribbon.

Never, ever play about with guns if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs – it is too easy to make mistakes that can land you in gaol and regretting the incident for the remainder of your life, because the one injured or killed in these circumstances is normally a friend – someone you were having a great time with.

Do you have a young girl in your life? Say a young daughter or a young niece? If she is between about five and ten years of age? If you are wondering what you can buy a little girl of this age as a gift, then perhaps I can help you out with a couple of tips

Does she love playing with dolls? Then I am willing to bet that she would like a doll’s pram. Young girls like to copy their mums and the mothers that they see on the street. They like to walk with their friends, pushing their dolls in their prams around the garden.

Some people say that this is a bad thing to encourage, but despite attempting to discourage parents from purchasing conventional toys for boys and, especially, girls for thirty or forty years, young girls still like to play with dolls and doll’s prams, Wendy Houses and toy tea sets..

Those young girls from the Seventies and Eighties are now in their thirties and forties, lots of them are feminists too, so the experience of playing with dolls and dolls’ prams and other customary girls’ toys does not appear to have done them any harm.

In fact, I think that it is far healthier for girls to play with dolls than it is for boys to play at being soldiers or cowboys brandishing toy guns, although even that almost certainly does not do any harm. Boys have probably been playing with toy guns, toy bows and arrows or even toy spears for thousands of years.

And I venture to say that young girls have been playing with dolls and giving them tea parties for just as long as well. When I was in infants’ school fifty years ago, our class had a Wendy House and girls and boys played in there together, although it was more for the girls – I do remember thinking that.

Traditional girls’ gifts like dolls, dolls’ prams, Wendy Houses and toy tea sets type of went out of fashion in the West in the last twenty-five years of the Twentieth Century, but they are back again now. These traditional girls’ toys can get seen in all the toys catalogues and toy shops such as Toys R Us.

They seem to be a great deal cheaper now than they used to be too, unless you want a dolls’ pram from one of the traditional pram manufacturers like Silver Cross. Silver Cross dolls’ prams are beautifully made displaying all the attention to detail and quality that they put into their full-size prams, which were ‘By Appointment to His and Her Royal Highnesses’ the kings and queens of the United Kingdom from about the mid 1930′s to the mid-1980′s. Who knows, perhaps they will become appointed again whilst the next royal baby arrives..

At the moment Silver Cross, which has outlets all more than the world and on the Net, is also giving away a classic rag doll with each buy of one of their prams.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a variety of subjects, but is now involved with Silver Cross Dolls Prams.

One of the strangest social or cultural phenomena since the Second World War is the change in criteria which individuals use to purchase garments. For thousands of years before then, people wanted the best possible clothing that they could get and one of the criteria that they used to judge each other was their dress sense or the quality of their clothes.

This all started to change in the Seventies when it became more significant to not be seen wearing the same article too often, so it became more desirable to have five cheap shirts that would not last long than to have one high quality shirt that would last for years. How did this shift in principles come about?

The most obvious people to blame are the fashion designers (or their imitators) and the advertisers. Individuals without much money to spend on clothes do not like to be seen in the same blue shirt on each occasion, they would rather have several colours, but perhaps these individuals do not realize the difference in the quality.

The quality of one’s clothing is vital as most women and about half as many men know. First impressions count and bright and cheerful (but cheap) is not as impressive to those who know the difference as quality.

To those people who say that the person should count over the clothing, I would say ‘Yes, in a perfect world. One day, but it is not the way it works now’. Why do people dress up for a date, and especially the first date? Why do people dress up for an interview? And why do individuals dress up to go to court?

It is because clothing matters and first impressions count and deep down, we all know it even though most of us wish that it did not matter so much.

First of all, it is important to find a style that suits you. Then you should purchase pieces of clothing that are good examples of that style. They will not be cheap, but is a Hell’s Angel’s leather jacket cheap? Absolutely not. Whatever niche you think you fit into or would like to fit into, buy the appropriate clothing to stand out for quality.

I am not saying that people have to dress appropriate to their age group, I am saying that people should dress appropriate to the upper echelons of their niche group. If you would like to become a Hell’s Angel, get one of the best leather jackets and if you want to work in an office, buy yourself a good suit. Just because you cannot tell the difference between a cheap one and a decent one does not mean that your peers cannot as well.

You just have so much scope to modify your physical appearance, but you can still make a big impression by wearing quality clothing like a decent overcoat, a decent suit, a good cardigan or a decent shirt. The people who know the difference will notice and it will not damage your prospects.

Radio frequency identification or RFID is an old concept that has quietly become a large part of everyone’s life. RFID has been around for at least 90 years and was initially put into practice about 70 years, but not many people realized it. These days, you yourself are most likely scanned every day by an RFID reader and the things you purchase are certainly scanned at least once a week.

So what is RFID? Well, you can think of it as the update of the bar code although in fact, it is older than the bar code by 50 or 60 years. Bar codes were developed in order to integrate stock control with point of sales processing.

Everyone has witnessed this and is used to it: the sales clerk at the cash register takes the goods from your trolley one at a time, looks for the bar code, flashes a light or a bar code reader over it and the cost of the item is added to your receipt.

What you do not see is that the computerized stock records for that item are lowered by one and the sales price is noted along side it. That procedure worked well for 40 years, but now there is a need for more information to be recorded than a bar code can accommodate and there is requirement for more stock control and even more speed at the check out. Nobody has any time any longer.

Enter RFID, an old technology revamped. RFID is the expertise that they used to put in Second World War aircraft in order to distinguish friendly aircraft to the RADAR-controlled anti-aircraft guns. The same equipment, fundamentally, that they still use in aircraft today to identify it to air traffic control. The difference is that until pretty recently, these radio signal emitters or transponders were as big as a suitcase and cost a great deal of money.

These days they are the size of the tiniest coin in your change and cost about five cents. They win over the bar code because they can hold masses of data, such as where and when and by whom an item was made; how much it cost and how much it should be sold for; its colour, weight and description; which shelf and in which shop it should be kept on …. ad infinitum. The shop owner can write anything on that chip using an RFID printer.

And when it comes to the cash register… No more scanning each separate item by hand, because each RFID chip or tag, as they are called in the industry, sends out its own data on its own exclusive radio frequency, so so long as the RFID scanner is within three or four feet of the trolley, it knows what is in there instantaneously. No more unloading, scanning and reloading the basket.

In fact, no more check out clerk. Most shoppers pay with a credit or debit card these days anyway, so as you walk past the scanner with your trolley, you are scanned; you swipe your credit card through another scanner; if you are satisfied with it, you authorize the payment and the barrier lifts for you to carry on to your car. You only need a check out clerk for the people who want to pay with cash. Cheques are being abolished soon anyway.

Everyone is afraid of fire. Or they ought to be. Imagine the horror of being trapped in a building or, even worse, on a boat at sea with a fire raging out of control. There have been many films made about it and I am sure that everyone has had occasion to think about what it would be like.

However, how many of us have sufficient fire safety equipment at home, in the garage, in the car or in the office? Could you lay your hands on the necessary fire safety equipment at a moment’s notice? Or do you know where it is (or ought to be), yet are not certain how to use it?

The purpose of this article is to get people to check up on their fire safety equipment and their fire drill. If your company has not practiced a fire drill in a while, remind your boss. If that is you, you are probably breaking the law and if your family does not know where the fire safety equipment is (or how to use it), then you may as well not have bothered buying it in the first place.

The first thing you ought to do is take measures to prevent fires spreading, if they break out. If you live in a street of terraced houses, make certain that there is a fire wall in the attic or roof space to prevent or slow fires spreading to or from your neighbours.

Similarly, take precautions to stop or slow fires spreading from room to room within your own home. For instance, the door to the kitchen could be on a closer, so that it is always closed. The doors should be at least half-hour fire-check, not flimsy cardboard items that will burn down in seconds.

If your garage connects to the house, you ought to have a half-hour fire-check door on a closer there as well and fit intumescent strips to the door to seal it off should it get hot. You can use intumescent strips on the kitchen door too.

Once your abode is as secure as it can be, that is, you can contain a fire, you want to know that you will not sleep through it, so you will need smoke detectors/alarms. These are very sensitive, so putting one in the kitchen is not much use, particularly if you are not much of a chef.

It is better to install smoke detectors in the hall outside the kitchen and at the top of the stairs. If you want the best system, have them all wired in series and to the mains with battery back up. That way, if one is set off, they all go off, the wires cannot get burned through disabling the alarm and the batteries cannot expire leaving you vulnerable.

Once you know that you have a fire, you need to know where your fire safety equipment is and how to use it. First, you should have a couple of fire extinguishers. You must have at least three: one in the kitchen, one in the garage and one in the car, but one on the landing and one in the hall is a very good idea too.

Be aware that not all fire extinguishers are designed to put out the same forms of fire, so please take advice and read the labels. If you have extinguishers among your fire safety equipment, make sure that the refill is not out-of-date and they do require servicing, if you want them to be effective on demand.

Fire blankets are also helpful in putting out fires and for protecting yourself from the scorching heat, if you have to make a rush through the flames to get outside and safety goggles are a fantastic idea at this time, one which many people wish they had thought of before.

This list is not exhaustive, so enquire of for further knowledge from your local fire department.

Are you thinking of doing up your children’s bedroom? Have they grown out of it or even wrecked it? Whatever the reason, it has to be done from time to time as your children grow up and have new needs or only require different size furniture. The first things to determine are how much you want to spend and whether you want any input from your children.

The answer to the first question, only you can know, but I would like to say that it can be great fun, a real eye-opener and a good bond-forger to have your children in on the decision-making and the redecoration too.

Well, OK, the redecoration depends on their ages, but they can help strip off the old paper even if they are too young to assist with the painting.

I will assume that you are going to ask for your children’s advice. Positively do not take them to the shop first off and hope that you will get rational answers. The best approach is to discuss what they want and then show pictures on the Internet.

take plenty of notes and make sure the kids understand that they have agreed to their choices. Similarly with the colour scheme.

Attempt to steer them away from dreary, drab, dark colours. Most kids like primary colours anyway – yellow, blue and red – so you should not have a difficulty here. Curtains and seat covers should be washable at home, not in a dry cleaners.

Try to get fire-resistant fabrics. If you are concerned about nightly accidents or simple spillages, you could get a few of mattress protection covers as well.

As far as the furniture itself goes, you should purchase the best you can afford. Check the joints and strive not to purchase anything that is nailed or stapled. You want furniture that is bolted or screwed together because it is stronger. You do not need me to tell you that children rock on chairs and bounce on beds.

If your children require a computer table, it can be a good idea to have it bracketed to the wall or floor so that it cannot be inadvertently knocked over, breaking the monitor. Substantial bean bag cushions are always a decent idea as well. They add colour, mirth and a comfortable place to read.

Children of all ages leave things lying around, so put a laundry basket in a corner somewhere and if the children are young, a toy box somewhere else. There should be cupboards and shelves, which is all that older children will need. Make certain that there are lots of them and then there can be no excuses for mess.

You may also want to supply a small dustpan and brush as a hint that you expect your children to clean up small accidents themselves. You never know, they may get the idea.

Safety is a very necessary aspect of snow boarding not only to avoid injury to yourself but also to ensure the safety of innocent bystanders. Snow boarding safety should be the prime concern for all snow boarders, because it is considered an extreme sport and therefore more dangerous than usual.

So, in the interests of safety for snow boarders and their spectators, I have put a number of safety tips together below.

The first thing to do is to verify the quality of the snow board. Look for damage and particularly cracks and splits. The board comes under a great deal of stress whilst in use and you do not need it to disintegrate when you are travelling at speed.

When inspecting the board, check that it is the correct size for you – in other words, is there adequate room for you to put your feet on it comfortably? Using the correct size board will allow you to exercise your skill without impediment.

After making certain that the snow board is good enough, you ought to make certain that you have the right protective clothing. One obvious concern is staying warm and another is being able to see where you are going. When you are travelling at high speeds, small flecks of snow and debris can be very painful and even blind you temporarily, so make sure that you are wearing protective goggles.

However, the goggles should be of a sufficient safety standard, say, polycarbonate, and should also offer UV protection – UVa, UVb and UVc, if possible. Oakley manufacture safety glasses and goggles of this calibre.

Make sure that your underwear is warm and then it will not matter too much what outer clothing you don as long as it is waterproof and tear-resistant. Make sure that you are well padded, so that whenever you take that inevitable fall, there is less chance of you breaking bones.

Next, ensure that your inner body is adequately taken care of. Exercising in the snow and staying warm requires the expenditure of energy, so be certain that you have some. Although it is not recommended that you eat heartily immediately before exercising for fear of cramps, you do have to have consumed something with calories in it and you should make certain that your body is adequately hydrated.

Think about taking some emergency supplies with you as well. Snow boarding is a dangerous sport so it is easily possible that you could suffer a bad fall and have to wait for an emergency rescue, which can take a while and the weather could turn foul, so have some energy-rich chocolate and cereal bars on your person. You can eat snow to make water, but you might like to take a litre of water with you anyway.

And last, but not least, take a cell phone with you – one that has GPS, so that you can accurately phone your location to the rescue services if you have to.

Shopping for clothing on line is becoming more and more popular each day and one of the major sellers is clothing.

Shopping for clothing on line is becoming more and more popular each day and one of the major sellers is clothing. There are lots of kinds of on line clothing retailers: there are on line clothing retailers that are Net versions of high street clothing shops and there are on line clothing sellers which just sell on line.

You might think that it is odd to want to purchase clothing without being able to see it or try it on, but in fact there is a long history of people purchasing clothing from catalogues, which is virtually the same as buying on line. Purchasing on line is convenient for those who do not like shopping, do not have time to go shopping or who live a long way from good clothing stores.

If you are not sure which on line clothing sellers you can trust, you are almost certainly better off ordering from shops that you already know from the shopping mall. Shops like Marks and Spencer, Abercrombie, Next, C and A, Walmart and Sears. Some of these on line stores hold a remarkable range of stock.

For instance, not each Marks and Spencer store might carry Mark’s full range of clothing, but their on line operation carries everything that Marks sells anywhere. There may also be extraordinary offers and discounts that are only available to on line shoppers.

As I said earlier, there is a long tradition of purchasing clothing from a catalogue, so there are quite sophisticated size charts and systems for measuring sizes right the first time. If you exercise the same amount of caution while you purchase on line as you would if you were purchasing from a catalogue, you will not go far wrong. If you do make a mistake though or the quality is not what you had expected, you can normally return the garment.

Pay scrupulous attention to the sales and returns policies before you spend time looking through the shop’s catalogue of clothing. After all, if the conditions are not favourable, you will not want to order from the company anyway. If the company’s policies are acceptable, read the product descriptions carefully as well. Purchasing on line is not always quicker, but it is more handy

If you are still unsure about buying clothing on line, you could stick to ordering items of clothing with which you are accustomed and the size of which never changes. Objects such as shoes, hats, socks, underwear, scarves, gloves and overcoats. Overcoats are easy to measure for as most sizes just go on the chest measurement. Likewise with shoes. Everyone knows their shoe size an then it is merely a question of the width: normal, wide or extra-wide.

It is fairly straight forward to go shopping for clothing on line and it is safe as well. You can pay for your items directly with your credit card, but you can increase your level of protection by paying through PayPal. It is easy to open an account and then you can pay via your credit card as well. If you have a difficulty both PayPal and your credit card company will take up your cause.

RFID (radio frequency identification) chips or tags as they are better known are the size of the smallest coin in your pocket, but they can store huge amounts of data that can be manipulated in ways that can do fantastic things.

RFID (radio frequency identification) chips or tags as they are better known are the size of the smallest coin in your pocket, but they can store huge amounts of data that can be manipulated in ways that can do fantastic things.

For example, RFID tags are in most office identity tags and in a few passports, allowing the holder to pass through security quickly while keeping the building or the country safe.

They are a modern version of the bar code. Remember before bar codes and bar code readers? When a shop keeper had to type prices into the cash register, correct mistakes and look up prices that they could not remember? People do not have any time for that anymore.

It is all right at the newsagents, but picture a teenager typing in your two trolleys of weekly shopping at the supermarket every Saturday. You would still be there on Sunday! Supermarkets have thousands of items and dozens of special offers – no-one could remember that amount.

No-one can, but bar codes make it straightforward and so do RFID tags. Bar codes work well, but they have to be seen to be read. RFID tags send out their information on a unique frequency which can be read out of line of sight. In other words, an RFID scanner does not need to see the tag to read it.

The scanner can read what is in your trolley without you having to unload it and as you pass by that scanner and pay for your things, they are subtracted from stock immediately so that the store manger can see what people are buying and what nobody wants to buy. So, if one brand of cat food sells better than another, the manager will see that on the computer print-out and buy more of that make, thereby keeping more people happy.

This use of RFID in stock control or asset management to give it its more official title, can translate itself into other uses too. An RFID tag can be put under your cat’s fur or in its collar so that you can locate him if he gets lost. The police and the wardens scan stray animals for a tag as part of their routine these days. Consevationists have been doing this with wild elephants, big cats and other endangered animals for years. Now you can have it done with your pets as well.

Company vehicles, as assets of the business, often carry RFID tags and you can have one placed in your car to aid recovery if it is stolen. Baggage handlers at airports or bus terminals can (and do) use them to avoid lost luggage.

The US government insists that RFID tags be used on all vehicles carrying explosives or hazardous substances and have done for almost ten years. The US military is in fact the principal user of these tags in the world. RFID tags are used to track military assets such as weapons, battle tanks, fuel, containers, guns, you name it.

Some people worry about RFID technology. Where is the line between their convenience and their personal information? For example, they do not like getting junk emails from people that have been able to trace the purchases they made with their credit cards.

Wearing designer clothing was not done in our household while I was growing up, but then with five children, my parents probably did not have sufficient money to encourage us to think about wearing designer clothing. That has stayed with me and I do not think of wearing designer clothing even now that I can pay for them.

However, nowadays, most children appear to be conscious of designer clothing. This almost certainly shows the power of advertising and the fact that contemporary advertisers are more callous in targeting children than there antecedents in the Fifties and Sixties were.

The difficulty with children wanting to wear designer clothing though is that they do not comprehend why they should wear a particular garment, they only see the adverts and the fact that their idols and friends are wearing them.

There is a good argument for wearing designer clothing but copying is not one of them. Neither is having been persuaded to by advertisers and friends. The single good reason for preferring designer clothing is because you like a designer’s style and theme. Most designers have a particular style although this can be modified from year to year.

A great deal of designers splatter their names all over their clothes, which ruins them for me. However, all clothing designers like to have their name or logo in a prominent position. They do this for two reasons: firstly to promote because otherwise their clothing is not distinctive enough ( a Lacrosse sweater without the crocodile is unrecognizable); and secondly, so that the wearer can show off the fact that they are wearing designer clothing.

Often clothing designers will branch out into other regions of designer wear. For instance, Gucci endorse shoes, sunglasses and wrist watches. Gucci is hoping that if you love their shoes you will also want their sunglasses and wrist watches too. In fact, this tactic works well. Wearers of designer clothing develop a relationship with the designers that they like and are more likely to have confidence in that brand.

The problem for most people is the cost. Designer clothing is a great deal more expensive than regular clothing and that is how it is meant to be, because part of the reason for wearing designer clothing is snob value – to set yourself apart from the herd. This permits clothing designers to make vast profits which opens up another problem – counterfeiting.

Where there is a chance of big profits you will find counterfeits, fakes or copies. If you are inexpert at recognizing designer clothing, you could easily get sucked into spending a lot of money on counterfeit items. Often it is not the clothing itself that is copied, although that is done as well, but the accessories are imitated a lot.

I have no figures, but I would not be astonished if there are ten times as many phony Gucci sunglasses in the world as real ones. So be careful, particularly if you do not have sight of what you are purchasing, as in the case of the Internet and be wary of market stalls and back street bulk traders.

Collecting antique dolls is a hobby that a great deal of women grow into or would like to if they had the time or and the money. A collection of antique dolls in a beautiful display case is a very attractive asset, but collecting antique dolls is not as easy as it might seem.

Well, to delineate that properly, it depends what you would like the antique dolls for. As with any hobby that has the capability to make the collector money, it is not easy to get it correct, but if you merely would like to enjoy your collection you will have an easier time of it.

Millions of women collect old dolls, but it is unlikely that any large number of them actually make any money out of their hobby, because you have to study and the professional competition is fierce. It is the same as collecting coins or stamps: you can have a beautiful collection of pretty commemorative stamps or coins that is worthless in monetary terms, because there were too many of that sort or that year manufactured, whereas you could have a collection of a dozen dreary stamps worth a million.

Therefore, if you want to begin a collection of antique dolls, the first thing to do is visit the library and get out some books on the subject. If there are no illustrations, you can almost certainly find some photos on the Internet in order to afford identification easier.

One of the first items you need to acquaint yourself with is the names of the most famous makers of dolls in the 150 years of the Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. Learn the names of the firms, the names of the dolls and an average cost.

If you come across what you think is a bargain at a car boot or yard sale, do not become put off by a tatty appearance. lots of dolls lead a tough life, but they can be repaired fairly easily and there are numerous dolls’ hospitals if you require expert help, advice or specialist parts like eyes or buttons. The original clothing can be repaired or replaced and the doll would still be valuable if it is rare, popular or sought after.

You know, some things are not particularly rare but are still expensive because they capture the imagination of a great deal of individuals. Baby Boomer toys from the Fifties and Early Sixties will almost certainly acquire this status once the Boomers retire and perhaps begin a collection.

Look out for antiques fairs to help you acquire more first hand knowledge. There are often specialized antiques fairs in largish towns and one sort of fair is antique toys, in which the section on antique dolls is certain to feature quite prominently. It is very functional to be able to see the dolls ‘in the flesh’ so to speak in order to know what you should be looking out for while browsing.

Books, photos and the Internet are great resources, but there is no replacement for hands-on experience and talking with collectors and dealers who are passionate about collecting antique dolls.

One of the chief requirements of babies and infants besides nutrition is the necessity to be at the right temperature. Babies and infants are very susceptible to being too hot or too cold and also to strong sunlight. From this one may deduce that suitable clothing for babies and infants is of paramount importance.

It is frequently thought that babies and infants generate too much heat and so that they can also cope with cold temperatures naturally, but this is unfortunately not true. A complication is that the effects of too much heat or cold can be delayed so that the real cause of a baby’s distress is mis-diagnosed. Sometimes, this can have fatal consequences.

People are apt to think that babies produce too much heat, but this is a falsehood. The fact is that warm-blooded animals like we mammals are able to generate more heat as we get older and therefore a baby is at the coolest stage of its transition into adulthood. A baby can be a degree or two cooler than an adult at its core.

Regardless of this fact, some cultures have insisted, and some still do insist, on hardening up a young infant. Ways of doing this have been to plunge the baby into cold water or to expose it to cold winds with insufficient clothing. This hardening up serves no practical purpose and can be very injurious to the child. It is possible that some peoples in some times used this method to ‘weed out’ their children, although it was never officially explained as that.

Some good guidelines that parents can use when choosing clothing for their babies and infants are:

The nature and quantity of clothing should be sufficient to maintain the baby’s core body temperature. A degree or two above that is all right too. The clothing will also have to be regulated to adjust for the seasons and whether you are at home or out walking. Put extra clothing on to go out and take some of it off when you get back inside, just as you would do for yourself.

Avoid wrapping your baby up in layer after layer of tight warm clothing or blankets unless you have to endure extreme cold. You can upset a baby’s thermostat by keeping it too hot all the time. It is far better to aim for a continuous, uniform temperature. A baby that is tightly wrapped in blankets will have its movement constrained and maybe even its circulation impaired. This is obviously not a good idea.

Tight, restrictive, hot clothing will also retain perspiration, which could cause the skin to be held in close contact with damp material for hours on end. This could lead to skin irritation and soreness. Precisely as you would change a nappy when it is wet for the same reason.

Therefore, it is better to dress the baby in fairly loose fitting clothes appropriate for the surrounding temperature and adjust the temperature using a cardigan or jumper or blanket, loosely draped over it. The fabric is not so important, but you will have to inspect for allergies both to the material and the detergent you launder it in.

If you keep the clothing simple you will be able to add or remove it quickly as you see fit. This is important because most babies find dressing distressing. To this end, try not to use ties, fasteners and pins. Velcro is far easier. Change all clothing every day to keep germs at bay.

RFID (radio frequency identification) chips or tags as they are better known are the size of the smallest coin in your purse, but they can hold huge amounts of information that can be manipulated in methods that can do fantastic things.

RFID (radio frequency identification) chips or tags as they are better known are the size of the smallest coin in your purse, but they can hold huge amounts of information that can be manipulated in methods that can do fantastic things.

For instance, RFID tags are in the majority of office identity tags and in a few passports, enabling the holder to pass through security quickly while keeping the building or the country secure.

They are a modern version of the bar code. Remember before bar codes and bar code readers? When a shop keeper had to type prices into the cash register, correct mistakes and look up prices that they could not remember? People do not have any time for that anymore.

It is all right at the newsagents, but picture a teenager keying in your two trolleys of weekly shopping at the superstore every Saturday. You would still be there on Sunday! Superstores have thousands of items and dozens of special offers – no-one could remember that amount.

No-one could, but bar codes make it simple and so do RFID tags. Bar codes work well, but they have to be seen to be read. RFID tags emit their information on a unique frequency which can be read out of line of sight. In other words, an RFID scanner does not have to be able to see the tag to read it.

The scanner can see what is in your trolley without you having to unload it and as you pass by that scanner and pay for your things, they are deducted from stock straight away so that the warehouse manger can see what people are buying and what nobody wants to buy. So, if one brand of cat food is selling better than another, the manager will see that on the computer print-out and buy more of that make, thus keeping more people happy.

This use of RFID in inventory control or asset management to give it its more official title, can translate itself into other uses too. An RFID tag can be placed under your cat’s fur or in its collar so that you can find him if he gets lost. The police and the wardens scan stray animals for a tag as part of their routine these days. Zoologists have been doing this with wild elephants, big cats and other endangered species for years. Now you can have it done with your pets also.

Company cars, as assets of the business, often have RFID tags and you can have one placed in your car to aid recovery if it is stolen. Baggage handlers at airports or bus terminals can (and do) use them to prevent lost luggage.

The US government insists that RFID tags be used on all vehicles carrying ammunition or dangerous substances and have done for almost ten years. The US military is in fact the principal user of these tags in the world. RFID tags are used to track military assets such as weapons, battle tanks, fuel, containers, artillery, you name it.

Some people worry about RFID technology. Where is the line between their convenience and their personal information? For example, they do not like getting junk emails from people that have been able to trace the purchases they made with their credit cards.

Toys R Us is one of the largest retailers of toys in the world. It is also one of the most copied names in the world. There companies all over the place with names like ‘Carpets R Us’, ‘Taxis R Us’ et cetera, et cetera. Toys R Us also has quite an extraordinary Internet presence.

This equals that millions of people are looking for Toys R Us coupon codes, particularly at Christmas. Money-off coupons for Toys R Us can save lots of money on contemporary toys as well as traditional toys such as dolls’ prams, dolls’ houses, rocking horses, board games and dolls.

Coupon codes are a set of numbers and letters, which when entered at the checkout will reduce the cost of the thing that you are purchasing or entitle you to a bonus with that purchase. They can be entered at physical and Web checkout points of sale.in precisely the same way. There are several advantages associated with coupon codes, some of which we will talk about later in this piece.

The first and most obvious advantage of using coupons is the discounts that they provide. A Toys R Us coupon could give a fixed discount, maybe $5, a percentage discount as in 5%, or a bonus, as in a free outfit with each Barbie doll or three outfits for the price of two.

If you are shopping on the Internet, the added value may be in the manner of free delivery, although that might be only within a fixed geographical zone such as mainland United States.

Convenience can be a big consideration. If you do not know what toy to purchase for a youngster and you have a fixed amount to spend and you have a discount coupon for a fitting toy, then that can make your mind up for you.

For instance, if you were going to purchase a board game, and there is a 10% discount on Monopoly, why not buy Monopoly? It saves having to think about whether to purchase Risk, Monopoly or Cleudo, does it not?

On line shoppers frequently are sent fairly limited issue coupon codes as a loyalty bonus or to encourage them to come back and buy something again. These personalized coupon codes are often quite generous, but might be quite limited.

For example. if you purchased a Barbie on line a few months ago, Toys R Us may send you a coupon code for Barbie clothing three or four weeks before Christmas. This type of coupon is usually sent out by email.

All in all, Toys R Us coupon codes, like any other coupons, are useful, if you want the device they are discounting or can find a use for it. They are especially helpful at Christmas, when people have to purchase a number of gifts.

However, you must not let coupons from any firm persuade you to purchase and do not hold your breath waiting for a coupon off any item that is in huge demand, money-off coupons are normally reserved for lines that are not going too well or are last year’s hot seller.

Have you decided that you want a change of image? Or would you merely like to smarten yourself up a bit? Perhaps you have a new career with new colleagues and you want to take this chance to dress a bit more elegantly. Sometimes individuals like to transform their image whilst they are looking for or have recently discovered a new partner.

Whilst changing one’s image most individuals will focus on a new hair style and smarter clothes. Women might go for smart trouser suits or power dresses and men might decide to wear a lounge suit or a jacket and tie more frequently. If the weather is bad a costly overcoat always completes the image, particularly suede, cashmere or leather. It used to be that fur was de rigeur, but now it is duh.

However, there is another way of changing your image, a way that need not be that costly, although sometimes it takes courage to attempt it. That is the wearing or the using of accessories. Women have more scope here in numerous ways, but men have options as well.

Women can sport something in their new hair style; they can co-ordinate bags and shoes; possibly wear a different kind of stockings or could start wearing gloves, white kid, for instance. They could modify the style of jewelery they wear and the colour or their hair and lipstick. Belts, brooches, watches and scarves can also serve the end of changing ones image. They could also wear a fresh flower on their lapel, in their hair or behind their ear for that old style gypsy look (that is the brave one).

Men have a somewhat harder time of it without appearing daft, but men can wear better shoes, wear a tie more often or a costly watch. They could carry a briefcase and an umbrella, and wear a flower in their button hole, but this is where it starts to look a bit contrived. They could also wear a monocle, a pocket watch or a bow tie.

My cousin wears a monocle and once you overcome your first instinct to laugh, you have to admit that he looks quite elegant. The same is the case with bow ties, which he wears as well and insists on tying it by hand. He also carries an umbrella, a briefcase and wears pinstripes. He is very brave and he is noticed and remembered wherever he goes.

However, you do not have to go that far. Even simply wearing a bow tie instead of a tie will set you apart. Have you noticed that if you are talking to someone wearing a bow tie you cannot stop staring at it? It is the men’s equivalent of a woman’s low-cut dress.

Anyway, accessories are a cheaper way of altering your image than going out and purchasing a new wardrobe of outfits and they are more easily combined that different suits. Go for colours that blend easily, like blacks, greys, browns and off-whites. Understatement is usually better than garish.

Everybody likes to get presents, but adults also get pleasure from giving and seeing the delight on the faces of their children while they open them. Gifts are given by nations all around the world, naturally. Nearly everybody in every country gives a birthday present and many countries give a New Year’s present, but the biggest present-giving culture is Christian and Christmas is their biggest gift-giving occasion of the year.

It is such a strong instinct for Christians to give presents at Christmas, that numerous adults will forego presents for themselves simply to get their children what they would like within the bounds of their finances. Actually, many go even further than that and put themselves under financial pressure for a number of months only so that their children will get pleasure from Christmas.

In fact, Christmas has got outrageously out of hand The idea of giving a present at Christmas was to imitate the giving of gifts by the Three Wise Men to Jesus shortly after his birth. It is the case that the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh were very expensive, but the givers of the gifts were very wealthy men, even so they merely gave one gift each.

These days parents spend hundreds on dozens of gifts per child. There were five children in our family and we used to get a sack of toys each and communal toys for all of us to play together like Monopoly. My parents were not well-off and my mother did not have time to work outside the home, so my father must have worked like a dog to pay for it all.

I did not realize that then, but I have since seen my brothers struggling to pay to do the same for their children. Still, the joy of seeing your children’s joyful smiling faces as they open their gifts at Christmas appears to be worth it for most parents.

Some of the most popular toys with children might be dolls prams or train sets or bikes all of which fall into the bracket of ‘expensive’, whereas popular suggestions for good toys for children are more like to be educational, such as Scrabble, Lego and books which are a lot less expensive.

Kids’ ideas for toys for themselves tend to feed the imagination, whereas parents’ ideas for toys for kids tend to feed the brain. Kids want to feed the right hand side of their brain while their parents instinctively want to feed the left hand side.

As children grow up into teenagers, music and computers play major roles in most of their lives, again reflecting the left and right sides of the brain. now the roles are more evenly balanced. This is a topsy-turvy time for young adults. All kinds of things are happening within and without them. Will the balance stay even or will it tip one way or the other? Only time will tell.

In order to illustrate how RFID tags can greatly sway the fortunes of a company for the better, we can take a look at a theoretical case below. Let us take the example of a furniture maker specializing in the supply furniture to a hotel chain.

This may sound like an example with no relevance to typical small businesses, but in fact, hotel chains are awfully choosy and have no loyalty, so if you can satisfy these people, you can please anyone.

The main requirements of the hotel chain are that orders are met and on time, the quality of the supplier’s products has already been considered to be sufficient by means of enforced ISO 9000 quality control and factory visits.

The hotel furniture manufacturer decides to use passive RFID tags to track its items from the point of manufacture to the point of delivery, that is the hotel or its depot.

Under previous conditions the manufacturer had employed a couple of personnel to walk around with bar code readers and clip boards carrying out quality control and tracking the completion of orders.

The problem was that the system was still subject to human error and items still went missing, which lead to management compensating by over manufacturing and over stocking ‘just in case’.

That is a common enough phenomenon., but the difficulties are multiplied when you think of all the separate items of furniture that are implicated in a hotel room, bathroom or lobby and if they are stored in a 200,000 square foot warehouse. Items get lost, forklift drivers make errors, people forget to fill in inventory forms, get sick and take holidays.

In short, administrating a storehouse like this is a nightmare with too much pressure on important employees. It sometimes leads to incomplete deliveries or worse, imperfect delivery tickets. Sometimes the order might be complete but the hotel would think it was not because the delivery ticket was incorrect.

If this firm were to initiate RFID asset control they could affix an RFID tag to completed sticks of furniture. The tag would say where it is, what it is, whom it is for, when it has to be delivered and what else forms part of the order. The tag is being read constantly by the warehouse’s RFID readers warning when orders are running late or are still incomplete.

Not only that but the tag can say what else has to be made and whether the object itself has passed quality control. It can also say which defects someone has found with it. In short, instead of a couple of people traipsing around the stockroom hoping that they have covered everything, you could have radio sensors reading every tag in a warehouse the size of a soccer pitch, reporting back to a central computer where the storehouse manager can have access to real time intelligence, not just the state of affairs at close of business the day before.

This should enhance the manager’s opportunity to manage, cut down on waste, guarantee complete orders handed over on time and so superior levels of customer satisfaction, which should lead to more repeat orders.

All RFID tags are used to store and ultimately send data. They can best be thought of as the replacement for the bar code. However, they have significant advantages over bar codes. For instance: RFID tags can hold much more data than bar codes; they can be scanned from further away and they can in point of fact send data, not only store data.

There are three varieties of RFID tags: passive, active and hybrid. Passive RFID tags are the least expensive, because they are less complex. They need to be induced to disclose their data by taking power from an RFID reader. When the reader’s radio waves hit them, they reflect back their data. This is the kind of tag used in goods in a retail outlet or on crates in a warehouse.

On the other hand, active RFID tags have a battery, a transmitter and an aerial so that they are always transmitting. These units are clearly a lot more expensive and so are used only on more expensive items like a container, a battle tank, an aircraft, on criminals ankle bands or on an animal of an endangered species.

The hybrid RFID tag is capable of transmitting, but it has to be told to transmit; it has to be turned on by a signal. This signal could be a satellite flying over head. These hybrid RFID tags are also costly, but the battery lasts longer because they are not ‘always on’. These tags have the same uses as the active tags, but are suitable for use where it is not vital to know where something is every minute of the day: for instance cows in a field or goats on a mountain.

Passive tags can be attached permanently by sewing them into linings or putting them under skin because they do not have their own power source and do not wear out. This is a cause of anxiety to some people who worry about an invasion of their privacy or the erosion of their human rights.

Active and hybrid tags are most frequently plainly visible so that the batteries can be changed as and when required. If this is going to be unlikely to take place, as in the case of wild animals, the tag can have a biodegradable clasp which will break sometime after the probable expiry of the battery.

Some uses for RFID tags are on season tickets so that the holder can pass through the style more quickly than a customer paying by cash. It has uses in security; most of the ID badges you see pinned to jackets have RFID built into them so that security guards do not have to stop and question everybody.

They can be put into wagons that repeatedly cross frontiers so that they do not have to stop for identification. They can be put on windscreens so that, as you pass through a motorway toll post, either your credit card is billed or the charge is added to your company’s monthly statement.

Hospitals utilize them on patients so that they do not lose anyone or misidentify them. RFID tags are helpful in our daily lives but people are concerned about criminals being able to read all this information too readily as well.

RFID is the acknowledged acronym for Radio Frequency IDentification. The core of RFID technology is that every RFID chip or tag is capable of emitting a radio signal on a frequency totally unique to itself.

RFID is the acknowledged acronym for Radio Frequency IDentification. The core of RFID technology is that every RFID chip or tag is capable of emitting a radio signal on a frequency totally unique to itself.

Therefore, every RFID tag must have its own identifying frequency and the RFID tag readers have be sensitive enough to be able to differentiate between frequencies that are only a very tiny bit different from its neighbouring tags. The disparity can be microscopic.

Therefore, the technology has to be sensitive and selective, but not fragile, because the apparatus has to be used on the shop floor and by people who are often in a hurry and in weather that may be inclement.

In order for RFID to work, you need a tag, which is an upmarket kind of bar code and a radio receiver, often called a (tag) reader. However, whereas a bar code can only hold a small amount of information and the bar code reader has to be pointed at it, an RFID tag can store much more information and can be read from a hundred yards or more – even out of line of sight.

Passive tags will only reveal their details when asked to by a reader, whereas an active tag is constantly relaying its contents. Clearly, active RFID tags are more costly than passive tags, because they require a long life battery.

These tags can be utilized to track items from the moment they leave the manufacturer of the goods they describe to the in-bay of the vendor. The tags can then be up-dated or replaced and stored in the warehouse. Once there, RFID readers can keep management informed about what goods are where and if the sell-by-date is impending.

This has ramifications for the amount of stock that a company needs to hold, the quantity of items sold cheap because the sell-by-date is very near and for theft, all of which should increase company profits more than paying for the cost of the tags, the readers, the printers and the software.

At the click of a mouse, bosses will be able to read how much inventory they have in real time and if this is all connected to the checkout cash registers, which are the most and least profitable items. This makes reordering easy . Easy to the point of computerization. For example, when supplies of the top ten percent of the best selling items falls below 1,000 order 10,000 more. Automatically, no questions asked.

RFID has many other uses as well. The ideas outlined above can be applied to farm animals, a call centre’s computers, a fleet of commercial vehicles, an inventory of domestic items, your pets, your car and even your garden furniture. Some individuals who work over a boundary are even having them placed under their skin so that they do not have to wait at customs.

And bear in mind that criminals on early discharge are also tagged. It is the same technology.

How does one go about taking care of one’s property – one’s worldly possessions? Well, the majority of people put their money in the bank, put the jewellery in a safe and insure the rest. But insurance is not really taking care of your possessions, is it? It is taking care of yourself so that you do not have renew them with your own money.

In the old days, and even now, I presume in some places, you would employ a boy to watch over your sheep or cattle or bring them in at night for fear of big cats, wolves or rustlers. These were an early kind of security guard and indeed rich people had and frequently still do have personal body guards.

What if you had a substantial office with a hundred laptop computers – laptops because people had to do field work too? How would you keep track on all those? A car is another good case in point and construction site machinery is being stolen all the time even from under the watchful gaze of (or with the compliance of) private security companies.

So what can you do? Get dogs? That works usually, but they can be poisoned. Install video cameras and passive infra-red movement sensors connected to a control centre? That works and a lot of firms and private houses have it, but it is very expensive.

As a cheap alternative, the police were handing out free pens in the UK, which wrote in invisible ink. The idea was to put your postcode and house number. This ink became visible under a certain kind of light. That is all very well if you have a suspect or found goods.

Bar codes are not realistic, the pen is better. It all comes back to insurance or surveillance.

However, there is another way that is becoming affordable. The concept has been around for approximately 85 years, but it was too pricey to use on anything less significant than an airplane or a battle tank.

I am talking about radio frequency identification or RFID for short. The concept is the same one that aircraft have been using since during the Second World War – a transponder sends out precoded information in answer to a demand from an RF reader.

Details regarding ownership and details of what the item is can be written to an RFID chip also known as a tag and the tag can then be taped inside the item that it is to safeguard.

There are two varieties of tag: the passive and the active. Passive tags will only respond if information is requested by a reader, whereas an active tag is always broadcasting.

Many business people use RFID tagging to keep track of their assets. In the instance of farm animals, most cattle are tagged these days. Most large offices have their IT goods tagged as well and we all know that fashion stores have been tagging clothes for years, although maybe you did not know what that button was that they were taking off at the till.

Individuals are already tagging their dogs, cats and cars and it will not be long before these asset management techniques will be used extensively at home as well. Insurance companies may demand on it.

It seems that there has been a drop in consumer trust in the building and construction industry of late. This may be because of the scams shown on television or the bribery and corruption endemic in the corporate sector, but it is almost certainly the same motivation why so many are now doing home improvements by themselves.

And why shouldn’t they? A little knowledge of the technical aspects together with with an eye for creativity is often enough to complete the home improvement on your own.

Why are people turning to do-it-yourself home improvements?

There are many people trying to pass themselves off as construction workers, although they do not have a lot of experience in construction or home maintenance and they are literally are out there right now practising, learning their trades on homes like yours and mine across the country.

As a result, homeowners are finding that the jobs are not being finished to their liking. At times they are even pre-paying for services that do not get done or were not part of the arrangement.

You do not have to trust and pay someone to enhance your home. Why not have a go yourself?

You can augment your home?s existing concrete surfaces using acid stains, acrylic paints, epoxy paints, and scoring techniques.

If you are tired of looking at drab gray concrete, there are some easy projects if you are sincere about having a go at home improvement DIY, you can easily give your patio, driveway or garage a revitalizing new look.

Attractive concrete work costs about double that of standard concrete, which is why many people cannot afford it.

However, there are inexpensive methods to beautify concrete after it has cured, without having to pay skilled tradesmen.

Acid-based concrete stains are becoming more and more popular for coloring concrete surfaces. They chemically react with the cement to generate permanent color with a variegated or mottled appearance like that of marble. This results in a natural, stylish looking surface.

Water-based concrete stains are an alternative to acid stains but are much more user friendly because they are so much less dangerous. These stains do not chemically react with the concrete; they are absorbed into the porous surface and act like a dye. The big benefit of water based stains is the wide array of colors available.

If you want to venture beyond the basic staining of your concrete, think about using some scoring techniques to create patterns on the surface.

You could make your concrete look like a tiled floor for instance. It is just up to your imagination. A mini angle grinder with a 4 inch grinding wheel is the ideal tool for this.

The key thing to remember when scoring is to trace out the pattern on the concrete first and ensure you are happy with the way it looks because scoring is irreversible.

Epoxy paints make an excellent coating for garage floors and cellar floors. Many industrial floors have epoxy coatings because of their hardiness and resilience to chemical spills as well as their appearance.

In recent years, however, it has become very popular for residential use with the availability of an growing number of different colors. This is not a complicated job, but the key to successful application is surface preparation.

Epoxy paints have also become available in a water based form making it safe for the DIY’er and perfect for indoor jobs. They cost a little more than stains. For a 400 square foot area, you’ll spend about $200 for the materials required for this project.

The hand held bug killer is the best way of clearing the space around you of insects, especially the flying ones such as mosquitoes. The indoor bug killer evaporates any insect from a mosquito to a gnat instantaneously on contact with a pleasingly loud, electrical ‘zap’!

However, this does not mean to say that the indoor insect zapper cannot be used outside, as long as it is not too wet. It should be treated like any other high voltage electrical equipment. Keep the indoor insect killer dry and please do not use it while you are standing in water!

Models do vary greatly, but there are basically only two kinds of hand held insect zapper: the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric insect killer. Both models are equally effective at killing insects and employ the same methods.

The electric insect zapper resembles a ‘junior’ tennis racquet, but with three layers of ‘strings’, which are in fact wires. The central grid of wires becomes electrified at the touch of a button, while the other two networks, one on either side, are only earths.

When a bug is caught between the wires of the indoor bug killer, it creates a short, which evaporates it instantaneously with a loud crack. The hand held bug zapper will kill other insects too, but they tend to fry rather than explode.

I have had the rechargeable sort for about five years and am extremely satisfied with the indoor bug zapper. In fact, the electric bug zapper has come a long way in the last few years. A fully charged electric bug killer is powerful enough to last for several hundred swipes and will hold it’s charge, if unused, for weeks without any significant discharge.

The battery recharge unit will take intensive use for the best part of a year, although its ability to hold a charge for several weeks gradually reduces after six or seven months.

The latest indoor insect zapper I’ve used has a main on/off switch, an LED that comes on when it is activated (the brightness of this light also gives an indication of the battery’s strength) and an LED that comes on when it is plugged in for recharge.

The instructions suggest that it should be (re)charged for sixteen hours. I usually put it on charge over night once or twice every week or two, although the hand held insect killer shows a marked increase in performance with only a couple of hours charging.

The latest model I’ve used also comes with a powerful beam called a ‘headlamp’. I have found this very handy when walking in the garden, but I’m unsure whether it’s supposed to lure the mosquitoes in the dark so that you can zap them if you’re feeling bored or just vindictive, rather like an Anglerfish.

I’ve used the headlamp on my hand held insect zapper for that reason too, but the light uses a lot of battery power. All in all, the electric insect killer is a huge asset at any outdoor event. The indoor bug killer is useful for ‘clearing’ your bedroom before retiring; it’s unbeatable for killing evening mosquitoes and it will eradicate wasps at a lunch table too.

I don’t know if you have ever used a handheld, indoor bug zapper, but I think that they are marvelous. I’m talking about the handheld type that looks like a child?s plastic, toy tennis racquet. They come in two basic forms. I prefer the rechargeable bug zapper, for the reason that batteries end up up costing more than the indoor bug zapper itself, although you could always buy rechargeable batteries, but then they are costly too.

My wife and I like to spend time in the garden. We meet friends there, dine there and in general loaf about outside, as do most folks about here, when they are not working. What’s more, it?s much cooler outside than inside. A comfortable chair, a few snacks, a cool drink and a book or a companion and life does not get much better. In fact, it’s idyllic.

That is until about six or seven o’clock when the first squadron of mosquitoes have judged that the sun’s rays have lost enough strength that they will not evaporate and they come out looking for blood. Some evenings are worse than others, of course. Normally, the mosquitoes are pretty bearable, especially seeing as I have discovered the indoor bug zapper. (I don’t know why it is called an ‘indoor bug zapper’, it is equally as effective outdoors as in).

It’s not that I like to slaughter things, but I find it hard to have compassion for mosquitoes. Nevertheless, I do get a certain amount of enjoyment from seeing and hearing mosquitoes and other bugs literally blow up with a flash and a spark as they come into connection with the electric and ground wires of the indoor bug zapper. These electric bug zappers can pack quite a charge, particularly if the batteries are new or the pack is completely charged.

The other day, I found a novel use for my handheld, indoor bug zapper. I’ll tell you how it came about. I was in the garden, as normal, and my bug zapper was close at hand as the first squadron of mosquitoes was expected. I had my book in one hand and the bug zapper on my knees, when my wife asked me to go to the store for her. No problem, therefore, I set off on the five minute walk.

I was half-way there when I realized that I had the indoor bug zapper in my hand, but it was not worth taking it home and beginning the trip again. Anyway, on my return trip, I had my small bag of provisions in one hand and the indoor bug zapper in the other, when a local bully of a dog came running out of a garden right for me. This has happened often and, although he has never bitten me yet, it is somewhat scary. He stood there glaring at me with teeth bared and his ‘pack’ of assorted local friends came out to surround me and join in.

I don’t really know what the best course of action is in this situation. I have tried holding my ground, but the intimidation just goes on and I have tried to keep walking, but he gets worryingly close by on occasion. This time, I unexpectedly lashed out with the indoor bug zapper and just caught him on the snout. Well, I’m not sure whether it hurt him, it did not seem to too much, but it gave him a very nasty shock in more ways than one, I can tell you! He leapt about four feet into the air as if he were on a pogo stick and then ran for all he was worth with all his pals following him. It was very gratifying after six months of aggravation from this dog.

Anyway, I don’t take my indoor bug zapper everywhere with me, but I will in future, if any other local dogs trouble me. I know it works a treat. I have seen that one since, but he stays well away from me and doesn’t utter a peep. I believe I would take my indoor bug zapper with me, if I were wandering in an unknown part of town or the park nonetheless.

Have you ever heard of an indoor bug zapper? If not, or if you are interested in getting an indoor bug zapper, please click one of the links to our website or blog.

If you aren’t already familiar with the electric insect killer, you are really going to like it and if you have had one before, I’m sure you’ll welcome it back like an old pal! The handheld insect killer does just what it says it does: it zaps bugs. But it does it really, very well.

Any bug that is touched by the wiring of the electric insect zapper is electrocuted. Smaller insects like midges and mosquitoes are vaporized with a very satisfying flash and a crack. Larger bug, like house flies and wasps are killed, but don’t explode like the smaller ones.

How many times have these flying insects taken the edge off an otherwise lovely evening in the garden? Or how many times have you not been able to get a good night’s sleep, because you know there’s at least one mosquito in the bedroom. It has happened to me hundreds of times, I know! It is very satisfying to get one’s own back with the hand held insect killer.

I don’t relish killing things without cause – I’m married to a Buddhist- but mosquitoes? I’m sorry, they can die. And the hand held bug killer does it without any messing about. No waiting and hoping they’ll fly into the ultraviolet light and then into the mesh. No, one sweep of the electric insect killer and the mosie’s gone and you can hear whether you got her or not. (I say her, because the sucking mosquitoes always are females – honest, I wasn’t being sexist).

Basically, there are two kinds of electric insect killer. There is the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric bug zapper. Both operate on the same principle, but I prefer the rechargeable type, although I suppose you could use rechargeable batteries too. However, I think that they would be more expensive that the bug zapper in the first place. Anyway, I have had a handheld bug killer of the rechargeable sort for five years and I am ecstatic about them.

These days, I spend a great deal of time in northern Thailand with my wife, so you can bet your life that my electric bug killer gets a good work-out almost every night. We usually eat in the garden in the evening and all socializing is done outside by tradition, especially in the rural areas, where we live, so it comes in very handy. I also use my electronic bug killer to ‘sweep’ the bedroom for bugs before we go to bed at night, just like a secret agent.

The hand held insect zapper seems to improve every time I buy one, which makes it hard to give you definite specifications. The hand held bug zappers I bought four or five years ago, sometimes failed within six to nine months of purchase, although their ability to hold a charge was less after four or five months.

However, the new electric bug killer will last 9-12 months and still be very pokey after nine months. My latest one even has a powerful torch called a headlamp incorporated into it. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be for, but if you feel that vengeance is sweet, you can attract mosquitoes with it and then kill them with your handheld insect zapper.

Some of the most common indoor bugs we see anywhere in the world are flies, spiders, fleas and beetles. No-one likes to have a bug indoors, so most people will go to just about any lengths to eradicate these common indoor bugs. The less common indoor bugs may be woodlice, earwigs, scorpions and millipedes or centipedes, although they are not less unwelcome.

No matter where you are in the world, it is very difficult to keep these common indoor bugs outside, unless you go to the extremes of keeping all your windows and doors shut all of the time, which is quite impossible. I now live in Thailand and I know for certain that this is not an option.

So, just what can you do about it? Well, let’s deal with all the flying bugs first, as of all the common indoor bugs, I think they are the most unpleasant indoor bug. They are very irritating, buzzing around your head and mosquitoes and other flies can create painful sores and besides that, all flies spread disease. I hate to see them strutting about on food, knowing that they have probably just come off some dung heap somewhere and now they are spitting on my food to taste it with their grubby feet!

My first line of defence is fine-mesh door and widow screens. They are not expensive and can be added retrospectively to any window. My window meshes slide, so they can cover only one half of a window at a any one time, but I do not find that a problem. You can still set up cross-winds, by opening two or more windows at opposing sides of a room. I just love to see the flies on the mesh trying to get in by day and the mosquitoes doing the same by night. At night, it is wise to turn on as little light indoors as possible in order not to draw these common indoor insects.

My second line of defence is natural predators – lizards, like Geckos (Jin Jok, in Thai). Some people don’t like them in the house much either and I can’t say that I’m all that keen on them indoors myself, but they are hard to keep outside and they do eat hundreds, if not thousands, of indoor bugs every day. I particularly like to see them lying in wait on the outside of the mesh, ready to jump on any bug trying to struggle its way through the wires.

My third line of defence is an indoor bug zapper. You know, the electric, handheld bug zapper that looks like a child’s tennis racquet. They are brilliant at catching and annihilating any flying indoor bug. The bug literally explodes and vaporizes on contact with the fully-charged wires of the indoor bug zapper. If you haven’t tried using one, you really ought to. They are most satisfying. These three defences keep our house pretty much free of flies.

The creeping common indoor bugs are not so much of a problem really. Door screens on self-closers will keep 99% of them out and the Geckos will help too. Spiders can get in pretty very easily, but then, I don’t mind them too much as long as they keep out of my way, as they consume other insects too. They are on our side really. However, for those who can not bear to catch them and throw them outside, the handheld indoor bug zapper works a treat on spiders too.

Sometimes, Fleas can be a problem, if you keep cats or dogs, but then if you wash or dust the animal once a month, you should be able to keep these common indoor bugs under control fairly easily. However, there are two final methods that we employ. Once a week, before we go out for the day, we spray every room with fly killer and every six-months we spray any rugs or carpets with an insect killer containing permethrin, which will survive washing and vacuuming for that long without losing its ability to kill common indoor bugs on contact. If you follow these measures, you will be able to keep your home or office quite free of the most common indoor bugs and the less common indoor bug as well.

Have you ever heard of an indoor bug zapper?

You have seen the high prices on subwoofers if you have looked around the internet at all. You are probably not pleased with what you are seeing if you are on a budget like me. It gets more important every day to save money on everything that you possibly can.

TheOnkyo SKE204 Subwoofer may seem like a good buy because of the price and specs on this speaker but we need to look through some information on these speakers and figure out the pros and cons. Everyone may have a little different opinion so I will just put the facts out there and allow you to decide on your own.

Ok first, let’s look at what we know about the Onkyo skw204 Bass Reflex Powered Subwoofer Black – the specs that it offers come at a very reasonable price. These speakers also claim to put out deep bass that will rival many other higher priced systems and says that it will allow you the experience of a subwoofer without paying a ton of money. There have been mixed feelings on the issue but as I said before… different people, different opinions.

One of the user reviews spoke about how he loved the system and it’s ability to put out high quality bass without the “one note” sound that other same price range subwoofers may have. There may not be a more annoying feelings than thinking you are going to get a great buy and then find out that you ( thinking you were saving money ) had actually gotten a less than enjoyable experience than you had hoped for.

One little problem that I read about with these speakers is that when it is cranked up too high the grill and box seem to rattle a bit. I am not sure what too high is because that is what the user wrote but from the other feedback that was offered it seems like the system would had to be pumped up quite loudly. A normal movie or music experience should not cause the distortion in my opinion. If you want to really wake the neighbors up I would suggest trying out another system that doesn’t rattle at high levels.

Do you have a lot of wires that you need to run near this speaker? If you do that may be a problem since the speaker is pretty sensitive to other wires that run nearby or over it’s wires. Once again it’s a preference thing,if you don’t have wires to run over it you do not have to worry about this con of the Onkyo skw204 Bass Reflex Powered Subwoofer Black.

All in all this is a great speaker for the price, even if you are on a budget you should be able to afford it.

It appears that there has been a decline in consumer confidence in the building and construction industry of late. This may be because of the scams highlighted on television or the bribery and corruption endemic in the corporate sector, but it is almost certainly the same motivation why so many are now carrying out home improvements by themselves.

And why shouldn’t they? A little knowledge of the technical aspects combined with an eye for creativity is often enough to complete the home improvement on your own.

Why are people turning to DIY home improvements?

There are many people attempting to pass themselves off as construction workers, although they do not have a lot of experience in construction or home maintenance and they are literally are out there right now practising, learning their trades on homes like yours and mine around the country.

As a result, homeowners are finding that the jobs are not being finished to their liking. At times they are even pre-paying for services that do not get done or were not part of the arrangement.

You do not have to rely on and pay someone to improve your home. Why not try to do it yourself?

You can enhance your home?s existing concrete surfaces using acid stains, acrylic paints, epoxy paints, and scoring techniques.

If you are tired of looking at dull gray concrete, there are some easy projects if you are serious about having a go at home improvement DIY, you can easily give your patio, driveway or garage a refreshing new look.

Attractive concrete work costs about double that of standard concrete, which is why many people cannot afford it.

However, there are inexpensive ways to decorate concrete after it has cured, without having to pay expert tradesmen.

Acid-based concrete stains are becoming more and more fashionable for coloring concrete surfaces. They chemically react with the cement to generate permanent color with a variegated or mottled look similar to that of marble. This results in a natural, elegant looking exterior.

Water-based concrete stains are an alternative to acid stains but are much more user friendly because they are so much less dangerous. These stains do not chemically react with the concrete; they are absorbed into the porous surface and act like a colorant. The big advantage of water based stains is the wide array of colors available.

If you want to venture beyond the basic staining of your concrete, think about using some scoring techniques to create patterns on the surface.

You can make your concrete resemble a tiled floor for example. It is just up to your imagination. A mini angle grinder with a 4 inch cutting wheel is the ideal device for this.

The key thing to remember when scoring is to trace out the pattern on the concrete first and ensure you are happy with the way it looks because scoring is irreversible.

Epoxy paints make an outstanding coating for garage floors and basement floors. Many commercial floors have epoxy coatings because of their durability and resilience to chemical spills as well as their appearance.

You see? You do not have to spend big money to improve your home. You have the capacity to do it yourself. With some instructions and a little bit of work, anyone can turn dull concrete into a masterpiece of their own.

The electric insect killer is the best way of clearing the space around you of insects, especially the flying ones like mosquitoes. The hand held bug killer evaporates any insect from a mosquito to a gnat instantaneously on contact with a pleasingly loud, electrical ‘zap’!

However, this is not to say that the indoor bug zapper cannot be operated outside, as long as it is not raining. It should be treated like any other high voltage electrical equipment. Keep the electric bug zapper dry and please do not use it while you are standing in the pool!

Models vary greatly, but there are basically only two types of electric insect killer: the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric bug killer. Both are equally effective at killing insects and work on the same principle.

The indoor insect killer looks like a ‘junior’ tennis racket, but with three sets of ‘strings’, which are in fact wires. The central network of wires becomes electrified at the push of a button, while the other two networks, one on either side, are harmless earths.

When an insect is caught between the wires of the electric bug zapper, it creates a short, which vaporizes it instantaneously with a loud crack. The hand held insect killer will kill other insects too, but they tend to fry rather than explode.

I have been using the rechargeable type for more than five years and am extremely happy with the electric insect killer. In fact, the electric bug zapper has come a long way over the last few years. A fully charged electric bug zapper is strong enough to last for a few hundred swipes and will hold it’s charge, if unused, for weeks without any significant discharge.

The battery recharge unit will take intensive use for the best part of a year, although its ability to hold a charge for several weeks slowly reduces after six or seven months.

The latest indoor bug killer I’ve had has a main on/off switch, a light that comes on when it is activated (the brightness of this light also indicates the battery’s strength) and an LED that comes on when it is plugged in on recharge.

The instructions suggest that the bug zapper should be (re)charged for about sixteen hours. However, I usually put mine on charge over night once or twice every week or two, although the electric insect killer shows a marked increase in performance after only a few hours recharging.

The latest version I’ve seen also comes with a strong beam called a ‘headlamp’. I have found this very useful when walking in the garden, but I’m not sure whether it’s supposed to lure the flies in the dark so that you can kill them if you’re feeling bored or just vindictive. You know, a bit like an Anglerfish.

I’ve used the headlamp on my electric insect zapper for that reason as well, but the beam uses a lot of battery power. All in all, the hand held bug killer is a huge asset to any outdoor event. The electric insect killer is useful to ‘clean out’ your bedroom before retiring; it’s unequalled for evening mosquitoes and it will clear a lunch table of wasps as well.
