After you know how high your table and chair have to be, you can consider size. In general, the larger the table or desk the better. However, you know what you are like. Are you the type of person who clears the desk at the end of every day, or are you the sort that works until you cannot work any longer and likes to leave books and papers open for a quick start the next day?

If you are the latter type, then you require as large a desk as you can get, but you might just want a big desk because they are imposing. Whatever. It does not matter. A bigger desk is better anyway. The bigger the better, but it must be at the height that allows you to sit at it on a chair that suits the length of your calfs and the length of your abdomen.

Sales Marketing Strategy

Each product has to have a sales marketing strategy to support it. You can sometimes promote a few things together like a table and seats, but any device for which you do not have a sales marketing strategy is doomed to failure.

Let me put it simply, if you went out one day and saw that someone was selling his entire stock of bicycle tyres cheap because they were going bankrupt and you purchased them, who would know except you and the person you bought them from? And he is not likely to want them back!

The first thing to think about is who your target market is and how can you best reach them. If you have a shed load of bicycle tyres, for example, you would almost certainly be better off advertising them in the classifieds section of the local paper. Or you could promote a one-off garage sale of cheap bicycle tyres or you could take them to a car boot sale. In your spare time, you could make a small website, but in this example off line sales are more likely than on line sales.

If however, you hook up with a bicycle tyre company that is willing to drop-ship (ie deliver) from their warehouse for you then a car boot or garage sale is useless to you. In this instance, you should go straight on line, create an automated sales and payment processing page and promote it on line by the various methods available.

If you definitely would like to, you could back up the on line sales with a bit of off line advertising. For example, you could put a postcard in the newsagent’s window advertising that your website has a stock of cheap bicycle tyres that can be delivered to the customers’ door. Then only add the URL of your website.

Your sales marketing strategy must be tailored to what you are trying to sell. In other words, you have to have a great deal of marketing tactics so that you can choose the ones that are right for your product. No one sales marketing strategy is ever going to fit all the products. Therefore, if you rely on just one sales marketing strategy you will not succeed.

In summary, when you have your irresistible deal ready for sale, sit down and think about who will buy it and how you can reach them – ie how you can tell them that you have what they want. A large part of the pleasure of quilting is gathering the materials that you will use. There are two methods: you can either choose the pattern first or the fabric first or if you are an experienced quilter, you can ignore the suggestions on the pattern and use whatever fabric you please. However, this is a big step that the novice should not take lightly

Most quilters will opt for cotton, 100% cotton, because it is the easiest cloth to use, is pleasant to deal with, is washable and is readily available in different patterns and weights.

In fact, you cannot go wrong with cotton, whereas most people do not want anything to do with man-made fabrics and silk and satin are both a problem to use and expensive.

When you go into a quilting or craft shop, you will see bolts and bolts (rolls and rolls) of 100% cotton fabric, so choice will rarely be a difficulty. In the beginning, a tip is to use tightly woven fabric, because loosely-woven fabric can ‘pull’ and distort leaving unsightly ‘holes’, which you cannot mend because they are not breaks.

My grandfather ran away from home at– years of age to Liverpool and became an apprentice ship’s carpenter. That would have been in’14. What a time to choose to go out into the big world – the start of the First World War in Europe. He could not speak English at the time, but must have taught himself as he learned his apprenticeship.

He passed out as the best in his year and was given a set of the finest woodworking tools of the age. Each tool had a small brass plate in the handle with his name etched onto it. My father still cherished them when I was growing up.

I never met my granndfather; he died a month before I was born, but I was named after him and, knowing that I was due and that he was going, he left me a teething ring, which I still have. More to the point of this article though, there was not a single power tool in his tool bag when he died in’54.

My father was the youngest son and when he was old enough, he had to leave school to be apprentice to his father who had stopped his roaming by then. Growing up with my father in the’50′s and’60′s, I do not remember him using power tools either. He used a brace-and-bit for drilling, several assorted hand-sharpened saws for cutting and his only consent to modern technology, a Yankee, which was a pump-action screwdriver. Everything he needed to hang a door or cut a roof was in one bag or later on a box, which he made himself.

I went away to study and travel and when I returned for good 12 years later, my brother had finished his carpenter’s apprenticeship and was working for my Dad. That would have been in about’80 and my brother still vows to ths day that Dad only bought power tools then because he, my brother, had learned how use them in technical college. Something which my father always denied, although it did seem a bit of a coincidence to me. My brother, now in his Fifties, still uses hand tools where he can, but also has the full range of power tools in a near-by van.

His son, now nearly 30 is also a carpenter and he has a power tool for every job and throw-away saws. How times have changed.
