Cruising The Mediterranean

Are you thinking of going on a cruise this year? If you have never been on a cruise before you certainly should try one and if you have been on a cruise before you could have a go at cruising the Mediterranean this time

Cruising at sea, calling into a different port each day or two soon becomes a way of life, so short cruises can be a little exasperating. A fortnight is all right but a month is much better.

Imagine it, a different language and a different culture every day for weeks! The Mediterranean Sea is not thought of as a large sea, but it has to be the most diverse area in the world, because there are countries like Portugal, Spain and France to the northwest; the Middle East is represented by Turkey and The Lebanon in the northeast; Arabic countries like Egypt and Lybia line the northeastern coast of the African Mediterranean and Arabic/Berber countries like Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco bring us back to within miles of Spain on the northwestern African Mediterranean shoreline.

In fact, the Mediterranean Sea covers about 2.5 million square kilometres and has over 120 large seaports around it. The variety of food, culture and language is pretty extraordinary. If you are searching for variety, you will absolutely find it when cruising the Mediterranean Sea.

If you get a kick out of history, then you will not be disappointed by the ruins from the immense Greek, Roman and Egyptian empires that spread around the region prolifically. I should not think that there is a single area without something to remind the population about the power of the Roman army 2,000 years ago.

There are dozens of different Mediterranean cruises available lots of them specializing in one particular aspect or area of the Mediterranean. Some go for romantic destinations others specialize in Greek, Roman or Egyptian history.

The last Mediterranean cruise I went on was actually two cruises back-to-back. I flew into Barcelona from my home town. I did not have to take care of my baggage from my hometown until I saw it on my bunk on the cruise liner. That was a great touch. On the first leg of the cruise we steamed east to Sicily and then north along the Italian coast to the French Riviera and back to Spain.

The second leg went east to Sardinia and then south to Africa and returned along the coast calling into Tunisia and Malta on the way back to Spain. They were two completely different cruises on the same ship and separated just by a week from one another.

The luxury and the dining experience was wonderful and I discovered the saying to be true that you can expect to gain about a pound in weight every two days unless you take plenty of exercise, so make sure you pack your swimming costume, even if you do choose to leave your exercise kit at home.

Finding Affordable Camping Gear

Camping is a very popular activity among the under Forties. People like to go hunting, fishing, hiking, walking or just camping with their friends, family or lover. The outdoors is attractive and can be romantic. Lots of people want to get a little closer to nature and the easiest way of doing this is sleeping under canvas, or nylon or something man-made like that. Another benefit for the young is that it is inexpensive.

However, it is not merely inexpensive, it is healthy and instructive. All children should go camping either with their parents or the scouts in order to learn something of nature before they get locked into a career to pay the mortgage and forget that there is life outside the city. You know, there are inner city kids that do not know that milk comes from cows? How ridiculous is that?

So, if you are going to take an education in nature by the horns, you will have to have certain camping gear. Inexpensive though camping equipment is relative to the equipment required for other activities, most people still have to be a little cautious how much they spend.

If you fall into that category, then this article is for you. Before we get into the nitty-gritty, it is worth pointing out that if you have the money, you can do worse than just going down to the local sports shop or camping shop and buying all your kit from them. Buy everything you require in one go and ask for a discount. if anything ever goes wrong they will remember you as a big spender and fix it for you straight away.

However, the remainder of have to be a bit more careful with the cheque book. If you know a bit concerning camping equipment from your parents or from the scouts and do not mind second-hand, then car boot sales and garage sales can be just the thing.

Frequently people are selling stuff because their kids have left home and they are having a clear out or perhaps they have had more children and the pup tent is no longer any use to them.

I sold a lovely tent not so long ago for peanuts because I knew that I would never need it again. The beauty of these sales is that you can put the tent up or get the seller to put it up for a closer inspection. Look for rot, sniff for mildew, check the number of pegs and guide lines et cetera, but do not get carried away with perfection, you can buy extra pegs, lanyard and a mallet, but you do not want to have to sew up holes or replace zips or fly screen.

Classified ads are another good source of equipment, but pick the item up yourself so that you know where to take it back if you do not have the opportunity to inspect it properly before handing over the money.

EBay and Amazon are also pretty good, but you have to do some research on the manufacturers’ names and the regular retail prices otherwise you might end up purchasing a costly copy, a kiddies’ toy tent or merely junk.

One of my favourite stores to browse is the Army and Navy Surplus store. Try going into an A&N and coming out empty-handed. If the equipment in there is good enough for our troops to risk their lives with, it’s decent enough for a week in the Poconos.

Decent Reasons For Having A Holiday In Hawaii

If you are planning your summer vacation and you are looking for somewhere where you can strip down to your bathing costume and swim all day and merely worry about it becoming too hot, not overly cold, then you should add a vacation in Hawaii to your short list.

A vacation in Hawaii is thought to be very costly because of the high profile it has in films and TV series like ‘Hawaii 5-0′, but it is possible to find fairly reasonable holidays in Hawaii, if you do a little research. Search the Internet for last minute package deals and if that fails, try putting together your own holiday from various cut-price components.

You may be pleasantly surprised how much it costs to have a holiday in Hawaii compared to a equivalent one in say, St. Croix, Barbados or even Florida. Look for actual hotels or guest houses in regions that are just outside the tourist traps and you will almost certainly get a better price. Lots of these hotels have their own web site and so offer seasonal or last minute discounts directly to private patrons.

Hawaii is one of the most beautiful locations in the area and indeed in the world. The coast is famous for its natural beauty – the swimming and diving are legendary, but the hinterland is beautiful as well, if you like walking, riding or driving by jeep. There are magnificent volcanoes, waterfalls and forests.

Hawaii has been turned into a paradise for sports people of all kinds. There is very little that you could choose to do and cannot on Hawaii. There is ample chance for most land, sea and air sports ranging from mountaineering, to diving to hang-gliding. You can rent Jeeps, mountain bikes, yachts and even a helicopter.

Most visitors take a vacation in Hawaii for water sports such as swimming, diving, snorkeling, fishing and water skiing, but power boating and yachting or just sailing a dinghy is common enough too.

There are also lots of natural and man-made historical sights to see on all the islands, but the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Big Island is just about the most well-known although most of the smaller island such as Kauai, Lanai, Maui, Molokai and Oahu all have their attractions too. It is only a case of reading up on Hawaii before you go and attempting to choose a hotel in a spot that makes your interests easily available.

There are lots of web sites and books on Hawaii to help you with your investigation, but you can also travel around easily once you get there, so that you could have a week on one island and a week on another offering different hobbies as a specialty.

This can all be arranged fairly easily if you put your tour together yourself, but it may be more awkward if you endeavor to patch two package vacations together. You will not regret your holiday in Hawaii whether you go alone, with the family or as part of a group.

Skiing Holidays In Andorra – An Introduction

Andorra is a tiny principality in the eastern region of the Pyrenees Mountains which run across the border between France and Spain. It is a very mountainous country where they speak Catalan, Spanish, French and their own local dialect. English is widely understood if not spoken. The co-rulers of Andorra are the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell.

The people of Andorra have the second highest life expectancy in the world (82 years at birth). Although Andorra is not in the European Union, it uses the Euro because it is easier for everyone. Andorra is a very prosperous nation because it is a tax haven and its 85,000 inhabitants are hosts to more than 10,0000,0000 tourists a year.

Most of those tourists are skiers or are interested in skiing. So, it goes without saying that the quality of skiing in Andorra is of world class proportions. For people who are not interested in skiing, the views are breath-taking and the clean mountain air is a tonic, which makes Andorra popular with ramblers and hikers. If you are touring the area, you can visit France or Spain from Andorra within several hours, depending on the weather.

The skiing industry in Andorra has come a long way since the first ski lift was installed in 1956. Most of the skiing tourists come from France, Spain and Britain. Although nowhere in the south of France can be considered cheap, Andorra levies hardly any tax on goods so this reduces the costs quite a bit. Perfume, cigarettes and alcohol are particularly cheap compared with its neighbours.

The largest skiing resort by far in Andorra is Grandvalira which has 193 ski slopes serviced by 66 ski lifts. Andorra in general and Grandvalira in particular has a reputation of being good for beginners and families. This is because numerous of the slopes are quite gentle and the area specializes in ski schools and training. Grandvalira alone has seven separate training centres and more than 450 qualified skiing instructors. Snowboarding is also taught at many of these schools.

Vallnord is another of Andorra’s famous resorts. Vallnord has perhaps a wider range of ski slopes than Grandvalira, since it also caters for the advanced skier. It is smaller than Grandvalira with just 50 different slopes and 30 ski lifts, but that helps give it a more intimate, isolated atmosphere than its enormous competitor.

There are also training schools at Vallnord and it is a centre from which you can sight-see and tour. If you want to ski, but also travel around, it is best not to take your own skis. You can travel by bus or by car, although you really should have some experience before driving through snowy mountains, where the weather can become treacherous at the blink of an eye.

If you travel by coach, you can hire skiing apparatus and clothing wherever you decide to come to a halt. Nowhere is far from anywhere in Andorra as the whole principality covers less than 200 square miles, but the weather can be a hazard to drivers who are not used to mountain weather conditions.

RV Safety Tools

A family journey in an RV or ‘recreational vehicle’ can be great fun, and one of the ways that you can try to make sure that it goes well, is to plan for as many eventualities as possible. This involves taking a few safety items or safety tools that are helpful for an RV trip.

If you are journeying far from the beaten track, then adequate supplies of food and water are the prime concerns naturally. You will also have to have adequate suitable clothing for the season of the year and the place you are travelling in.

However, keep in mind, that some locations are chilly at night no matter what time of the year it is, so a few jumpers or light jackets will come in useful if you are driving in the mountains, in the north (in the northern hemisphere) or along the coast.

Once you have the prerequisites to survive, there are a few luxury safety items, that you might find useful. The first of these is the cell phone. There might or may not be adequate coverage where you are going, but the likelihood are that it will work somewhere near, if you have to use it. Be certain that you have a charger that works in the RV and a hands free kit if possible.

The luxury of all luxuries is a GPS unit – Global Positioning System – so that you do not get too lost, if you are out in the wilderness or even in some huge, unknown metropolis looking for the hotel you booked into over the Internet for a couple days break from the road.

If you are renting your RV, there is probably a GPS system on board, but if you are taking your own vehicle, you may consider purchasing a mobile phone that also has GPS built into it. These hand held devices are plenty accurate to get you back on track.

However, they are electrical devices and as such can break down at any moment, especially when you especially require them, so make sure that you have a current road map as well.

While you are on holiday, the weather is quite important – in fact it can make or break a holiday, so why not take a portable weather radio with you? A weather radio is exactly what it implies. It is a radio that specializes in picking up weather broadcasts – especially local ones.

This is very convenient indeed, particularly if where you are heading is not experiencing the sort of weather you are searching for. It allows you to modify your destination without having to get there first. These functional devices often come with other tools built in like a torch and a timer (alarm clock).

Make sure that your RV has an adequate set of vehicle repair tools including gloves and safety goggles. Gloves are practical for keeping your hands clean if you have a repair to make and safety goggles come in very handy if you have to swap a wheel in a dust, rain or snow storm.

The last thing on our list, but not the least important, is a good First Aid Kit. When choosing a First Aid kit, comprehensive is definitely better than small.

Snow Boarding Safety

Safety is a very necessary aspect of snow boarding not only to avoid injury to yourself but also to ensure the safety of innocent bystanders. Snow boarding safety should be the prime concern for all snow boarders, because it is considered an extreme sport and therefore more dangerous than usual.

So, in the interests of safety for snow boarders and their spectators, I have put a number of safety tips together below.

The first thing to do is to verify the quality of the snow board. Look for damage and particularly cracks and splits. The board comes under a great deal of stress whilst in use and you do not need it to disintegrate when you are travelling at speed.

When inspecting the board, check that it is the correct size for you – in other words, is there adequate room for you to put your feet on it comfortably? Using the correct size board will allow you to exercise your skill without impediment.

After making certain that the snow board is good enough, you ought to make certain that you have the right protective clothing. One obvious concern is staying warm and another is being able to see where you are going. When you are travelling at high speeds, small flecks of snow and debris can be very painful and even blind you temporarily, so make sure that you are wearing protective goggles.

However, the goggles should be of a sufficient safety standard, say, polycarbonate, and should also offer UV protection – UVa, UVb and UVc, if possible. Oakley manufacture safety glasses and goggles of this calibre.

Make sure that your underwear is warm and then it will not matter too much what outer clothing you don as long as it is waterproof and tear-resistant. Make sure that you are well padded, so that whenever you take that inevitable fall, there is less chance of you breaking bones.

Next, ensure that your inner body is adequately taken care of. Exercising in the snow and staying warm requires the expenditure of energy, so be certain that you have some. Although it is not recommended that you eat heartily immediately before exercising for fear of cramps, you do have to have consumed something with calories in it and you should make certain that your body is adequately hydrated.

Think about taking some emergency supplies with you as well. Snow boarding is a dangerous sport so it is easily possible that you could suffer a bad fall and have to wait for an emergency rescue, which can take a while and the weather could turn foul, so have some energy-rich chocolate and cereal bars on your person. You can eat snow to make water, but you might like to take a litre of water with you anyway.

And last, but not least, take a cell phone with you – one that has GPS, so that you can accurately phone your location to the rescue services if you have to.

Skiing In Modern Croatia: Where To Go

Twenty or thirty years ago, no-one in their correct mind would have gone to Croatia, unless they were in the army, but that has all changed. These days, Croatia is part of the European Union and is much more hospitable to tourists.

One of the tourist activities that Croatia is building its reputation on is skiing. It is a warmer country than northern France, Switzerland and Scandinavia, so it is feasible to take a skiing vacation in the mountains and finish the holiday off with a week at the seaside.

One of the best skiing regions to visit is Zagreb and in particular Bjelolasica, which is where the Croatian Olympic skiing team trains. The facilities in this area are excellent and the prices are a lot cheaper than you would pay in either in the French or in the Swiss Alps or in Scandinavia. In fact Croatia offers great skiing facilities at a very affordable cost.

The Croatian skiing community is of very high standard and they know that they have to compete with the history of the more famous French and Swiss ski resorts so they really pull all the stops out to make certain that the tourists and sports people that come to their country derive value for money and would like to come back again.

They realize that word of mouth advertising is the best and the cheapest form of advertising that you can get.

Another well-liked Croatian skiing destination is Platak. Platak is located nearer the Adriatic and is a little more expensive than Bjelolasica because it is a bit cut off, but it only depends where you would like to go and what you want to do.

Platak is a good all round skiing resort which has plans for improvements on a vast scale. During the coming years, Platak will have more ski slopes of different levels of difficulty and more hotels and chalets of all price ranges.

You would be forgiven for thinking that there might be a language barrier in Croatia and to be honest there can be, but the ski resorts are all staffed by people who have studied most of the common European languages. It shows how much can be done in twenty years if the government and the populace have the right and the same point of view.

Croatia has a very diverse cuisine, so tourists and skiers from all over the world ought to be able to find plenty of suitable food and drink. Croatia has a border with Hungary and their wine is very drinkable. All in all, Croatia offers decent skiing facilities at a knock down price, but just how long they will be able to offer these excellent facilities at these attractive prices remains to be seen.

If you are a serious skier, it could be worth going to Croatia and purchasing a time-share or some other sort of accommodation now before the inevitable price rise when the rest of Europe realizes how cheap skiing in Croatia really is.

Skiing In The French Alps – Some Basics

Most people dream of going away on vacation to somewhere warm or even hot, however there are some who seek out the cold and the snow so that they can go skiing. It is true, many if not most of those who go skiing in the winter can also afford a summer break somewhere warm too. Skiing in the French Alps is one of the favourite choices of novice and experienced skiers alike.

But what if you cannot ski at all and want to learn? Well, you could go the French Alps anyway and learn there or you could learn the fundamentals at home, perhaps on an all-weather slope, so that you receive full value for money when you arrive in France. There are quite a number of all-weather nylon slopes dotted around most Western countries, normally located at leisure centres.

If you learned how to get dressed, the basic moves and the safety aspects of skiing and being on snow, than you could get on with learning better techniques from the experts at the French Alps resort after you get there. This way you will not miss out on the fantastic skiing in the French Alps, which along with the Swiss Alps, which it adjoins, is one of the best regions for skiing in the world.

Learning how to come to a halt is a good idea, but before you can practice your stopping technique, you have to be moving, which can be fairly scary. This and health and safety codes are the first things that you will be taught when you take lessons either at home or in the Alps.

Knowing that you know how to come to a halt gives you the confidence to get you going and practicing other techniques like turning. You see, one of the difficulties with skiing is the novices, they tend to get in the way, so you have to look out for them and learn how to come to a halt before hitting them or how to go around them.

There are normally at least a number of types of slopes at these French alpine resorts ranging from gentle slopes for beginners to steeper, faster courses with obstacles like trees and rocks for practiced skiers. The weather can alter in an amazingly short time even within an hour, however at the best times of the year, the weather is normally pretty warm from about 10 AM until 2 PM.

This allows you time for a pre-breakfast walk, a relaxed breakfast and four hours on the slopes, before lunch and apres-ski activity. The evenings’ entertainment is legendary, which is another good reason for a late beginning. French food and drink is world renowned and the food and drink in the French Alps is no exception.

Skiing is fairly physical and necessitates the aspirant skier to be fit and strong. Therefore, if you have let yourself go a bit, you may think it prudent to visit a gym for a couple of weeks before your holiday to get back into shape.

Hiking And Camping Is Undergoing A Revival

Are you interested in getting closer to nature? Do you like walking and sleeping under the stars – or under canvas at least? If you do, then a walking or hiking and camping holiday might be just the thing for you. A hiking and camping holiday will get you out in the fresh air, permit you to observe nature first hand and cost you very little to boot. In short, hiking and camping are the ideal blend, if you are looking for a healthy, low-cost break outdoors.

Not only that but you can either go alone with a couple of good books, take a lover, take a friend or take the family with you. All in all, you have many options on hand to you if you want to trek off into the wild blue yonder on foot.

There are a few of ways of tackling a vacation of this sort. You can either book into a hiking and camping site or you can literally simply head off. If you have children with you then the camping ground is a necessity, but otherwise the decision is yours, although it has to be kept in mind, that camping off site is or can be illegal. Trespass is absolutely illegal as is causing a nuisance of yourself, putting wild animals under duress for no good reason, damaging trees or property and littering.

So, if you are new to hiking and camping, you will probably be better off going to a hiking and camping site or park. Do not be put off by this thought, some of them are truly immense. Check out the Poconos and other national parks for instance.

There is no doubt that price is a factor in the choice of a camping holiday for many young people, but it is rarely the sole reason why people like to get away and sleep under the stars. Going back to nature and bird- and animal-watching are other common reasons.

If you fancy this sort of holiday, it is worth remembering that hiking and camping have become extremely popular pastimes of late. They always were well-liked, it is true, but they waned in the Eighties and Nineties, and are seeing a resurgence now. Therefore, do your homework, see where you would like to go, get some brochures or look on line and book up early. Yes, nowadays you have to book up early to get into the best hiking and camping sites again.

A final note of caution, if you decide to go off into the wilderness outside a camp site, let people know where you are. Take your mobile phone and a couple of fully-charged extra batteries and say when you are going to phone in that you are safe and make certain that you abide by it. It is very costly if Air-Sea Rescue get called out on unnecessarily.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

If you are at all interested in either Pennsylvania or American history, you will surely have heard of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and the historic activities that took place there for the period of the American Civil War. The three day long battle that took place there in July 1863 was cruel and bloody, but was claimed as a victory for the Unionist North.

Even so, one quick look in the Union Army burial ground in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on Cemetery Hill will persuade you that the victory came at a very high cost. The cost in human life and human suffering was gigantic on both sides. Later on in the same year, Abraham Lincoln gave a discourse which was to become famous throughout the world as the Gettysburg Address.

These days, the Gettysburg National Military Park is a peaceful place, but it acts as a moving reminder of the battle that was fought, the strategies employed, the heroism of the combatants and the willingness of military leaders to sacrifice the common soldier for political ends.

If you go to the Gettysburg National Military Park, you would do well to begin your trip in the visitors’ centre. There you will be able to pick up books, pamphlets and leaflets to help you orientate yourself when you are on the battlefield, even if you are familiar with how and where the genuine battle was fought.

If you think that it would be too much for you to work things out for yourself or if you do not have much time, you could join one of the regular guided tours. If you are somewhere in between these two positions, you could first watch a film in the Cycloarma Center, where there are also historical items recovered from the battleground on the numerous excavations that have taken place over the nearly 150 years since the battle at Gettysburg took place. If you do not look around the museum before you go on to the battleground, you ought to look later.

If you are visiting Gettysburg to enlighten your children about that most significant era of American history, you ought to first check out the special interest programmes accessible to 7-12 year olds in the warmer summer months. One programme allows children to enlist in the army of 1863 for an hour in order to get a sense for what it was like for soldiers of the day and what it was like for the children that helped them fight.

Another programme consists of a story-teller recounting stories of what it was like to be a youngster in the days of the Civil War and the role that children played both in the war and in civilian life in those days.

Gettysburg is a spellbinding place to go to whether your family was embroiled in the battle there or not. Many of the combatants’ names and place names like Devil’s Den and Cemetery Hill will already be familiar to you and a visit to the Gettysburg National Military Park will bring them back to life for you.

Skiing In France: An Introduction

An aspiration of lots of the world’s skiers is to go on a skiing vacation in France. Some of the world’s most famous and best downhill ski slopes are in the French Alps. The French Alps are contiguous to the Swiss Alps, so if you have the time you could visit both on the one vacation. The French and the Swiss Alps are the most sophisticated in the world. English is spoken in both regions, but French is the local language in both the French and the Swiss Alps.

When you book your skiing holiday in the French Alps, it may be your first skiing vacation and you may be a bit worried about investing in all the expensive skiing apparatus that a skier needs.

However, it is a groundless worry because you can hire everything you require for your skiing vacation at most ski resorts. It is never difficult to hire skis, ski boots and ski poles, but you can frequently hire goggles and warm clothing as well.

It is vital to find out what you require to take yourself and what you can hire because the temperature drops rapidly and radically in the Alps as the sun goes down. In fact, the midday can be fairly warm, but by the mid afternoon it can be very cold and the nights can be deadly.

Prices for renting apparatus vary, but endeavor to get a fixed contract that you are comfortable with before you go. It is to be expected that going in off the street is the most expensive way of hiring the skiing apparatus that you require.

One tip is to make sure that your mobile telephone is always fully charged and that you have enabled ‘roaming’, which is the ability for a mobile phone to work abroad. If you get lost or injured in the snow, it could become serious very quickly.

One of the most famous skiing resorts in the French Alps is Val d’Isere. The slopes here are well-known all around the world and cater for all levels of skill and experience. Ski resorts such as Val d’Isere have all the contemporary facilities that a skier expects, such as ski lifts, clothing and equipment rentals, restaurants, bars, shops, travel agencies, and much more besides. The resort at Val d’Isere is the one to beat for ski resorts all over the world.

Language is not a problem for most tourists who would like to visit the French Alps as all the main European languages are spoken there. Food should not be a problem either as French cuisine and French wine is some of the best in Europe. If you choose to go on a skiing vacation in the French Alps, you will have a great time.

Make certain that you acquaint yourself with the safety rules of skiing and the specific resort you are going to and set aside part of your day for exploring the rich culture and fine restaurants of the French Alps.

Swimming With Dolphins

Any time of the year is a good time for planning family holidays, but you ought to plan well ahead in order to get the exact holiday that you want. The perfect family vacation certainly depends on the type of family that you have: is it a young family; are the children all boys; are the children and the parents for that matter daring or not; are they sporty or laid back?

Some people who do not get enough excitement during the year, like say office workers, prefer to go on adventure vacations when that time of the year comes about, whereas people with dynamic jobs may want to laze about, say on a cruise, although cruising is not the perfect holiday for young children. There again, you might prefer to go on a holiday where you can take your dog.

In fact, it does not matter where you go or what you do, family vacations are times for giving the children special memories that will remain with them for ever and family vacations also allow some very busy parents to bond with and get to know their children better.

Family vacations can also be used to expand children’s horizons: city kids can go and look at the countryside or the seaside and vice-versa or you could take them abroad so that they can actually meet foreigners and learn a couple of words of another language.

One vacation that would allow adventure and seaside lounging around would be a trip to swim with dolphins at Discovery Cove, Florida, which is located near SeaWorld. People are shown about Discovery Cove in small classes so that you get to ask all the questions you want.

One hitch is that children under six years of age are not permitted to swim with the dolphins, but other than that, all the equipment you will require and lunch are included in the cost. It is not particularly cheap to swim with dolphins because dolphins are costly to feed and maintain in a healthy condition, but it is definitely an unforgettable experience. It is a boon that all the equipment is included in the cost covering items like wet suit, snorkel, flippers and even towels.

However, you have to pre-book, you cannot simply walk in off the street. This is so that they can be sure to have enough team-leaders and enough apparatus for everyone. Once you have swum with the dolphins and played with them, the rest of the day will be yours to enjoy the beautiful beaches, explore the shallows and observe the wild birds that are to be found on the property in profusion.

There is also a job training programme for those who think that they want to take up this kind of job. Work training or work experience permits you more time with the staff and the animals behind the scenes so that you can get a sense of how such an establishment is run. If you are interested in a day out like these two examples, why not look them up on the Net for more details?

The Profession Of Landscape Architecture In Thailand

Landscape architecture plays an important function in the development of all contemporary cities. The principles of landscape architecture are used in order to create open ‘breathing spaces’ so the city has some fresh air and does not look cluttered. Landscape architecture is taught in Thailand and is acknowledged as a profession offering professional qualifications at degree level.

If someone wants to practice as a landscape architect in Thailand, then he or she has to have a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from one of the two universities offering the course. Chulalongkorn University and Thammasart University turn out around 100 post graduates between them in landscape architecture each year.

Bangkok is home to most of Thailand’s landscape architectural companies. There are around thirty substantial businesses and about eighty freelance landscape architects.Lots of the post graduates would like to continue their study or gain more experience abroad before settling down to practice in Thailand. In order to work as a landscape architect in Thailand, one needs to obtain a license from Thailand’s official Association of Architects.

The Thai Association of Architects plays an vital role in maintaining standards of landscape architecture. The Thai government, both local and national, use landscape architects to help with the design of such projects as motorway development, inner city reconstruction and airport design. On a more understandable level, landscape architects are involved with the Royal Flora Expo in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.

The Association of Architects in Thailand is a private organization but it works hand in glove with the Ministry of the Interior. It assists the government regulate four professions which can have an effect on the environment and one of these is the occupation of landscape architecture. However, landscape architecture does not make up 25% of the Association’s work. At 15% of the association’s workload, it is fair to imagine that landscape architecture is under represented in Thailand.

The Association of Architects issues licenses to applicants based on the results of three principles. These concepts are education, experience and examination. The principle of education is satisfied by gaining a BA in landscape architecture. Then the applicant has to provide proof of work experience and finally, the association has its own examinations which the landscape architect also has to succeed in.

Landscape architecture is still in its infancy in Thailand. That is to say that, landscape architecture has merely recently started being applied to public developments. There have been landscape gardeners working on the gardens and palaces of rich Thais for centuries, just like in each other country with a wealthier ruling class.

Two of Thailand’s most well-known landscape architects are Somwang Leevanjikul and Chanvudhi Varavam, both of whom have been used in substantial government projects in Thailand using their skills in landscape architecture to create Thailand’s cities and countryside a better looking place to be.

Thailand Or The Land Of Smiles

Thailand is the most well-liked tourist destination in South-East Asia and has been for decades. This is because the climate varies throughout the year from hot to cool and even cold, if you would like to look for it; Thai food is world-renowned; the range of wildlife is broad as is the flora; the diving is fantastic and the people are friendly and hospitable. Thailand is not known as the Land of Smiles for nothing.

There are also a great deal of festivals, some of which are religious, which equals Buddhist, and others are not. Thailand has been Buddhist ever since the country came into being in the Thirteen Century, but the people were Buddhist long before that. Or at least the majority of them were. There were also throw-backs to older religions the same as in the West.

In the West Christmas and Easter were moved to cover up pagan festivals, but in Thailand they simply have the old festivals as well. One of the biggest festivals is Loy Krathong in November (the first full moon in the twelfth lunar month). Loy Krathong is a charming festival to appease the goddess or water, Ganga, for using and abusing (polluting) her.

These days, people still remember the old significance of Loy Krathong (‘Floating Boats’), but it has been taken adopted by lovers too. People float symbolic boats out onto the water and ask the goddess to forgive them and to grant a wish. Lovers push their boats out together and numerous people believe that if the boats, krathong, float out side-by-side then they will have a trouble-free year together.

Numerous women don traditional Thai costumes for the evening, particularly if they are going out for a meal or to a party. Some men do too, but not so many.

Also in November is the world-famous Elephant roundup in Surin. The elephant roundup is also well-liked with foreigners and Thais alike. The city of Surin is full on this weekend so if you want to go it is worth booking your hotel with your travel ticket otherwise you may be stranded. Not that it is cold or likely to rain.

Bridge Over the River Kwae week is in November. The bridge is a moving reminder of the horror that prisoners of war from all around the world underwent at the hands of the Japanese overlords at the time. More Thais died than foreigners although Thailand was thought of as ‘friendly’ by the occupying Japanese.

In December it is the King’s birthday and Fathers’ Day on the 5th. The king is very extremely well esteemed in Thailand and many people will light candles in their garden on the roadside to the king in the early evening. This is a very pretty sight, particularly in the villages where street lighting is normally negligible. Constitution Day is on the 10th and is a bank holiday, which usually means a celebration.

Christmas is celebrated in the cities by tourists, ex-pats and young Thais although it has no real religious significance outside the Christian churches in the larger cities.

New Year’s Day is huge. There are parties that will last all night, dancing, feasting and fireworks.

Thailand is a great place to come to in November and December and although it is considered high season, I am sure that you will find it cheaper to come on vacation to Thailand – The Land of Smiles – than it is to remain at home in the cold.

Where To Buy Your Camping Equipment From

Do you like to go camping? Do you go with friends or family and do you help with the planning? If so, then you almost certainly already have a lot of the items you require, but as you doubtless already know, there is always something you have to purchase for each trip. If you are planning your first trip, then it is to be hoped that this short piece will give you some tips.

In fact, there are quite a few sources of camping gear. Some offer better value for money than others, some offer low quality gear and others offer high quality at high prices. The trick is to be somewhere in the middle, where you can get good quality apparatus which is fit for its intended use at the right cost and this is what we will help you to do.

One of the first things to comprehend, and it is very helpful to understand this point, is that a camper needs camping gear, ie the tent, sleeping bag, et cetera and camping supplies, ie food, insect repellent et cetera. It is practical to realize the difference because some camping stores sell both gear and supplies, whereas others only sell one or the other.

Starting with camping gear. You can buy camping gear on line at dedicated camping stores, at department stores and at eBay and Amazon. The trick here is to do some research first to find out what is the best of what you require and how much it costs and then to go searching on line for that particular device manufactured by that particular manufacturer. You will absolutely save money by purchasing on line, but you have to be more careful of copies.

Army and Navy Surplus stores are pretty decent too. After all, if it is good enough for our fighting forces it is not going to fall apart the first time it rains or blows a bit. I have always found it difficult to come out of an army and navy store without buying anything, even if they did not have what I went in there for. I always end up buying a new compass or a knife or some other gadget.

Department stores are next and you can pick up good deals out of season, otherwise they tend to be expensive and you have to be wary of not purchasing ‘kiddies gear’ meant for use in the back garden by mistake. Sports shops and dedicated camping shops are usually very dependable, selling the best gear at the top prices.

Now on to camping supplies. To be honest, what do you eat when camping that you do not eat at home each week? Moose, squirrel, possum, deer? Well, you are not going to take that with you anyway, are you, so you might as well get your camping supplies from your favourite supermarket.

Or you can go to the camping shop and pay over the odds for ‘specialist foods’ and ‘survival rations’, but again, to be honest, you would be better off acquiring items like that either on line or at the Army and Navy store again. If you want to try out some of these army rations, it can be fun, but get them at bargain prices from the A&N.

Saint Croix Of The US Virgin Islands

Saint Croix is the biggest of the US Virgin Islands although the capital city, Charlotte Amelie, is located on St Thomas. Saint Croix itself has two towns Frederiksted (pop. 830) and Christiansted (pop. 3,000). The name of the island comes from the earlier Spanish name given by Christopher Columbus in 1493 – Santa Cruz or ‘Holy Cross’. As Santa Cruz, Saint Croix gets a lot of mention in swashbuckling stories of pirates and buccaneers sailing on the Spanish Main.

The populace before the Europeans arrived was Arawak and Carib and they had probably been there since about 5000 BC. After 1493 the population of the Caribbean became embroiled in a 100 years war with the Spanish and the kind of people living on the island changed forever.

Saint Croix has been owned and therefore predominantly occupied by the Spanish, The British, the French, the Dutch, the Maltese and the Danish all of whom had slaves and plantations

The slaves were manumitted in 1848, but many decided to remain on Saint Croix. Descendants of slaves still live on the island. The total populace of the island is now about 60,000.

English is the official language and is the most commonly spoken, although there is also some Spanish, French Creole and Virgin islands Creole, better known as Crucian, which is spoken by most inhabitants in informal situations.

This Hispanic segment of the Crucian populace is mostly of Puerto Rican lineage. The US bought Vieques from Puerto Rico during the Second World War and evicted its inhabitants. Many moved to St Croix because of its similarity to Vieques. These people have integrated well, but also kept a few of their old customs. They usually speak a mixture of Spanish and Crucian English in a distinctive form of Spanglish.

Continental Americans make up about 13% of the inhabitants and mostly live on the eastern side of St Croix. Arab Palestinians are also a sizeable minority owning most of the petrol stations and supermarkets on St Croix. Other modern immigrants have moved from the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Philippines.

There has been some tension between immigrants and those calling themselves ‘real Crucians’, but it has largely disappeared due to intermarriage. There have been attempts to define a ‘real Crucian’.

The issue seems to have been sorted out when in 2009, the proposed U.S. Virgin Islands Constitution voted by the Fifth Constitutional Convention laid down three definitions of U.S. Virgin Islanders: “Ancestral Native Virgin Islander”, who have ancestral ties (and their descendants); “Native Virgin Islander”, who were born on the island (and their descendants); and “Virgin Islander”, who are any United States citizen who has lived in the region for five years.

Christianity, in the guise of Protestantism is the main religion, although the Hispanic community is Roman Catholic. There are also small groups of Jews and followers of Rastafari, Islam.

Taking Your Dog To St Croix

Whether you would rather clear mountain air or the ozone-rich, salty air of the sea, you can find places to take your dog for a walk that are very pleasant, even when you are on holiday. If you are a nature lover and a dog lover, you could choose a vacation destination with nature and your dog in mind.

City-bound hotel holidays or long, driving holidays are not very pleasurable for your dog. If a dog is going to be at home all day, he would rather be in his own home all day. Likewise, with driving. He might plead to go the mall with you in the car, but doing a coast to coast run in a scorching fortnight in June, is not really what he is all about.

Therefore, if you are planning a vacation that you think your pet would not really enjoy, why not do him and yourself a favour and leave him behind? Leave him with a dog-loving family member or friend or board him in a kennels that you have researched well yourself.

There are literally hundreds of boarding kennels in operation in every state and often there are thousands. Most of them are good, some are outstanding and the owners of some could do with a stiff talking to. I put my dog in one once that I had not checked out well enough and went away for two weeks. When I got back four hours early, they were not ready me and my dog was dirty and forlorn.

I felt terribly guilty and my dog would not ‘speak’ to me for a week. Really! No eye contact, no tail wagging, would not always come when called, no happy running about, just a hang dog appearance for seven days. She must have felt that I let her down badly, which of course I had, by not checking up on the kennels.

A fantastic place to take your dog is St Croix in the United States Virgin Islands. The US Virgin Islands are literally part of the United States of America and you can go there without a passport, with your US dollars and with your dog.

Not every hotel allows animals just as in continental USA, but there are loads that do. There are also package holidays that will take you and your dog from the airport to the island hotel and back again all for one price.

Of the four main islands in the US Virgin Islands, St. Croix is most likely the best option for going to with a pet dog, because it is less heavily populated than the other islands and is by far the largest.

The hotel or resort will probably not provide feeding dishes, bedding and toys but they will surely have a store where you can buy such things. It is perhaps not worth bringing your own either unless you have a large suitcase and a decent weight allowance. Food for your dog will also be extensively available on the island, of course.

St Croix has various sorts of landscape and plenty of activities to take full advantage of them. There are beautiful tropical beaches just right for swimming or playing in the shallows; there are the undulating plains of the old plantations, which are perfect for long walks and there are hills, mountains and rain forest to explore with your dog too.

Elite Caribbean Cruises

If you take pleasure in travelling and visiting new places, I recommend a cruise. I have cruised the Mediterranean and the Baltic and my next cruise will be a Caribbean cruise. I am really looking forward to it. If you have never been on a cruise, start saving up now, because it is opulence like you have never imagined before.

Never having been on a Caribbean cruise before, I do not know how much the various Caribbean islands differ from one another, so I do not know how varied that cruise would be. However, I have cruised the Med and the Baltic and woken up to a different country every day and in both of those seas and every country is very different from its neighbours.

On our Baltic cruise we departed from Southampton and steamed to Gothenburg in Sweden. From there we went to Helsinki and Leningrad (in those days). On the way back, we called into Copenhagen and the Tivoli Gardens. None of those countries was in any way similar to another or even Britain.

Similarly, my Mediterranean cruise left from Minorca in north eastern Spain going east to Sardinia and then north along the southern coast of Europe. Italy, France and Spain. The second week of the cruise left Minorca again and went to Sicily and then south along the northern coast of Africa including Malta.

The luxury on a cruise is almost indescribable to someone who has never been on a cruise. There is no standard higher than five stars, but the cruises I have been on offered superior levels of luxury than any five star hotels I have stayed in anywhere in the world.

Food and shore trips play a major part of cruising. The food is top notch with no mistake. Breakfast on a cruise liner is better than most Americans and most Europeans have for dinner. Whatever you want from prawns to steak, from exotic fruit to porridge. Lunch and dinner are even more sumptuous.

Shore excursions are well organized too. They include a ferry from the cruise liner to the land and then a coach trip by a local firm to the destination, which could be an historical site or a shopping mall. Most cruisers go on these trips, but some would rather stay on board and take advantage of the lower number of passengers and the free food.

I went on every shore excursion and thoroughly enjoyed each one. The excursions are usually pricey though, but you are part of a trapped audience, so what can you expect?

I thoroughly recommend a cruise holiday to any and every one. You should go at least once in your life, but do not leave it until late in your life because you will want to go again.

The Advantages Of An All-Inclusive Vacation

If you are arranging to go on vacation this year, how are you thinking of going about it? There are several options to explore, if you begin planning early enough. There are the self-planned, ‘I will find a hotel when I get there’ style; there are cruises and there are package vacations.

The self planned is for those without children and is more bold. Cruises are wonderful, if you like being on the water more than being on land and there are the package holidays, some of which are all-inclusive package vacations.

If you choose a vacation package, you have the alternative of looking for an all-inclusive resort or an all-inclusive hotel. There is not much to choose between them, if you are going alone or with your spouse, but if you are taking children, the all-inclusive resort is the one for you.

This is because all-inclusive hotel rooms can be on the small side and if you have a small child or even children with you, your room will soon become overcrowded and suites are more highly priced. An all-inclusive resort, on the other hand, will normally offer accommodation in the form of cabins or chalets, which are designed with young families in mind.

You do not want to be staying on the 12th floor of a large hotel with toddlers, because either they have to stay in the room until you want to go out, in which case they might get grumpy or they might learn how to get out and wander off in the hotel. A chalet, however, will inevitably be on the ground floor, frequently be in groups, so that you can help keep an eye on each other’s kids and may even have a small garden with a fence.

Whether you go to an all-inclusive hotel or an all-inclusive resort really depends on whether you have or can put up with children. If you have children then a resort is for you, if you do not like children’s racket, then you would be better suited to an all-inclusive vacation in a hotel.

Once you have selected your type of all-inclusive package vacation, the rest is plain sailing. Actually what is all-included in these style hotels and resorts can vary quite widely, so you should make sure you know well in advance. Cost is a good indication. If one resort at the same location is much cheaper than the others, look into it more carefully before booking.

Often the disparity will only be in degree. For example, an all-inclusive hotel or resort may offer the free use of diving gear, but when you read on it might restrict that to non-mechanical diving apparatus, so you only get a mask, snorkel and flippers. Others may only have ten units of equipment – first come first served.

However, having said that, most all-inclusive package vacations are fantastic deals. They include your transport to and from your home town to the destination, which depends on you and where the resort is of course. For St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands transport could be by cruise or flight – you must settle on that at the outset. Having to travel 500 miles to Orlando by bus or train with three young children may not be much fun.

When you arrive there, they almost always include all your food and snacks and all soft drinks, tea and coffee, beer and non-branded spirits. An all-inclusive will also include all charges to on-site entertainment. That means the, pool, the club house, pool, snooker, table tennis, the gym etc, and access to any private beach attached to the hotel. It will also include night time shows usually.

Vacation Property For Rent

If you are thinking of buying a vacation rental property, there are two things that you can ultimately do with it. Some purchasers of vacation rental property intend to live in it a lot of the year round themselves and others aim to rent it out for most of the year. There is no doubt that vacation rental property can present an outstanding income stream.

However, there is a huge difference between vacation property rental and residential property rental. This has to do with the fact that holiday makers are not inevitably looking for the same amenities in a vacation rental property as they are in a home.

One thing that does affect the desirability of both vacation rental property and residential property is location. However, a good residential property for a young family may need to be close to schools and other amenities and for older people being near a school is more like a hassle.

Likewise with vacation rental property, you have to know your target market. You have to find the answer to the question: why do people come to this location? And then buy a vacation rental property that matches the highest volume profile.

In this way, you will never be short of tenants and you will be certain of high rents too. For instance, some people might go to the Caribbean island of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands for the diving options it presents while others may want to explore the tropical rain forests. However, younger travelers might not want to go far from the only largish town on the island, Christiansted, so that they can take part in any nightlife happening.

One thing that everyone requires is security. The person who rents your vacation rental property will want to feel safe. That is secure from falling masonry and rickety stairs and secure from burglars. That means that your property should be well lit both internally and externally and have sturdy doors and locks. Windows should be lockable too.

It is a good idea to present a kitchen like the one a family would usually expect at home. So, an American kitchen with American style appliances for American families, if they are the people you are trying to appeal to. Again, you will have to study the typical visitors to where you want to buy a vacation rental property. A younger family may eat in at night, an older one may never eat in at all. The kitchen should be well-equipped, furniture should be comfortable and recreational gear should be provided too.

A great deal of people like to take their dogs with them, so you might want to consider making the vacation rental property pleasant for pet owners. If the furniture is robust, massive oak or something like that, dogs will not be able to damage it easily. Plastered walls without wall covering and tiled floors are also favourable for having animals in the house. This is a definitely growing niche market for vacation rental properties

And last but not least, remember that people like to be able to keep in touch when they are away from their loved ones, so Internet access is a growing essential too. People can VOIP, so a phone is not so important these days. If you bear these points in mind, you can have a profitable vacation rental property where you can holiday free too.

Getting Married On St Croix

St Croix, in the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean has been a popular honeymoon destination for newly married couples for decades, because the weather there is sunny all year round and you can get pleasure from any number of wonderful holiday activities together.

Things to do include hiking, exploring, taking tours, horse riding, water sports like diving or sailing or just and lying in the sun. However, in the past few years, it has also become very popular to travel to St Croix for the actual wedding ceremony itself, not just for the honeymoon. However, there are both advantages and disadvantages to getting married abroad.

First, you have to think about who you want to have there at your wedding. St Croix is regulated by American law, so you will be required to have a certain number of witnesses. You can use local volunteers but you may not be able to envisage your wedding without your family or your best friends being there.

It is worth remembering that every guest you want to be at your wedding will have to be flown to the island and in many instances, the guests will not be able to afford this trip themselves, which means that you will have to pay for all or at least some of the cost of the flight and the stay. If you cannot do this, it may not be possible for you to have everyone present at your wedding ceremony that you would want. The cost of a Caribbean wedding on St Croix is a distinct disadvantage.

Remember also that you will almost certainly be spending your honeymoon wherever you hold the wedding and although it may be nice to have friends and family around you for the wedding, you might wish they would disappear for the honeymoon.

However, your guests may want to take a vacation while they are in the Virgin Islands, so if you want some time to yourselves, book them into a package holiday deal which will keep them occupied in order to give you some time to yourselves. Try to make a block booking and ask for a big discount.

However, one of the main advantages is that you are already in the place where you will be honeymooning. Travel is stressful and tiring, although St Croix, USVI is less than 1,300 miles from Florida, so being on the spot for your honeymoon will save you all that.

Not only that though, your wedding will be an even more memorable event because an idyllic beach setting with a sunset backdrop is really very moving. Most couples adore the island scenery, so a Caribbean wedding in St Croix may be just right for you.

When planning your marriage in St Croix, remember that the US Virgin Islands are a legal part of the USA, so US laws and marriage laws relate there. You also do not have to have a passport to go to St Croix, although you are allowed $1,600 worth of duty free goods per person per 30 days. This can make up quite a saving.

St Croix, The US Virgin Islands

Saint Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands, which lie 1730 miles east south east of Miami and 93 miles west of Puerto Rico. This sector of the Virgin Islands has belonged to the United States since 1917 when they were acquired from the Danish government for $25m in gold to safeguard American shores from German U-boat attack.

At the time, it was feared that Germany might subjugate the islands and construct submarine pens there in order to harass American supply shipping, which was vital to the allies in Europe during the First World War.

The US Virgin islands is a cluster of about 60 chiefly unpopulated islands, the four biggest of which are called St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island. (By the way, ‘Saint’ is spoken in the English manner). The Islands’ inhabitants, however, have other names for these four which are Twin City, Rock City, Love City and Small City respectively.

Christopher Columbus landed there on November 14th, 1493, but there is proof of human habitation on the island going back to 5000 BC. In fact, the Arawaks and the Caribs made up the islands’ populace, before the Europeans got there.

Possession of St Croix and the other Virgin Islands changed a lot over the following centuries, but it became infamous to many people as Santa Cruz, which is its Spanish name. As Santa Cruz, St Croix featured prominently in 17th and 18th century stories of pirates and buccaneers on the Spanish Main.

In fact, after Spain initially took control of the island, it changed hands seven times; having been Spanish, British, French, Maltese, Dutch, Danish and now American. The residents of the US Virgin Islands are now US citizens and carry US passports. They also use the US dollar and US laws.

St Croix was an agricultural powerhouse in the Caribbean until the 1960′s when the local government determined it was time to industrialize. The island is now home to HOVENSA, one of the largest oil refineries in the world.

There is also a large distillery, the Cruzan Rum Distillery, which used to produce rum from sugar cane grown on the island. Sugar cane, or its extract, molasses are now imported from the Dominican Republic to make Southern Comfort and Cruzan Rum. Diageo is arranging to build a distillery there too in order to produce Captain Morgan Rum.

Residents of the island call themselves Crucians. However, there is a great deal of debate about what constitutes a ‘real Crucian’. Many say that a Crucian is someone who was born and raised on St Croix, while others claim that descendants of the slaves that the Danes took over in 16th and 17th Centuries are the only true Crucians.

Many Crucians can trace their ancestry back to Puerto Rico or other Virgin islands as the sugar cane industry attracted a lot of migrant workers in the 1930′s, 40′s and 50′s. There was also an influx of down-islanders (ie from other Caribbean islands), as the residents say, after the industrialization of St Croix in the US Virgin Islands in the 1960′s and 1970′s as tourism and petrol became more central to the economy.

Going Sailing In The Caribbean

There are plenty of destinations for people interested in sailing and if you are tired of the Virgin Islands then move on over to the rest of the Caribbean.

The Caribbean islands are part of an island chain stretching 2,500 miles. Given the enormous distance, it is no surprise that tourists spend weeks out there in order to enjoy the splendour that it has to offer.

Just like in the Virgin Islands, there are lots of charter firms you can go to. for a range of hobbies. These companies come in different sizes, but perhaps the best is the yacht charter.

When you charter a yacht, apart from the yacht, the other elements and benefits that come with it are meals, separate guest rooms, a galley, toilet and shower.

Since you are the paying guest aboard the boat, you can customize the menu by telling the crew before the voyage what you want to eat. You can help out by buying the provisions yourself, having someone from the crew do it for an additional fee or choose a set menu from one of their pre-composed packages.

Since most of the islands in the Caribbean are small and uninhabited, you are certain to see places that not many have seen. But if you can’t afford to rent a chartered yacht, don’t worry because you can probably get one that will cost as little as $50 if you are able to book a pre-arranged trip with several other guests to share the bill.

One thing you ought to be prepared for during you sailing vacation is the possibility of a storm. These generally occurs during the months of June to November. If you are not sure that this is the best time, book the trip on another date.

But if you are adamant about going on your dates, there are some online tools you can utilize to check if the area you will be sailing in has ever been hit by a storm before.

The other option is to plan your itinerary to the Caribbean islands further south because they are less likely to be affected by a storm. I am talking about the islands of Aruba, Barbados, Bonaire, Curacao, and Turks and Caicos.

If you like the idea of going sailing around the Caribbean there are ample choices. You could do a lot worse than start in St Croix in the US Virgin Islands and travel south or west. If you start in St Croix, which the pirates of old used to call Santa Cruz, you will not need a passpert and can take your pets with you, but you will need more ID if you call into foreign islands.

Inland Beach Cottages

When many people, singles and families alike, think about booking a holiday, many of them would only think about going to the beach for a fortnight’s lounging on the beach under the sun and swimming in warm, azure sea.

However, many of the best, most famous beach locations are magnets for hordes of people. It appears that most people like the sand, the sea and the sun. Now some people go to these destinations precisely because they are busy. They like the crowds and the night clubs that attract them. Mainly singles go to these types of places and a holiday romance is not far from many peoples’ minds.

Couples and older people may prefer a little less noise, pollution and bustle. However, there are beaches which meet these requirements too. Often they are private beaches. Some have hotels on them but some do not. Those that do not frequently have inland beach cottage rental properties instead. These are nearly always self-catering.

When most people think of a beach it is instinctively connected with the sea. However, this need not inevitably be so. There are also inland beaches on lakes and rivers. These beaches are usually referred to as inland beaches. Accommodation can be a problem with even some of the best inland beaches.

Many of these inland beaches are simply not well-known enough to make a hotel commercially feasible, but some of them have cottage rentals instead. These cottages, or cabins sometimes, can be difficult to find if you do not reserve early enough. They are frequently complete homes, fully equipped with all the household facilities you have grown accustomed to: a fully furnished living room, multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and a contemporary kitchen.

Inland beach cottage rentals are popular because they are usually located right on the water’s edge. This makes the bit of beach right before your cottage your private beach. You can sleep on it at night if it’s hot, lie there all day or set up a few fishing lines.

In the evenings, you can hitch up with neighbours to have a party or keep yourself to yourself. For this reason, it is a good idea to check photos of the cottage before you make a reservation.

If an inland beach cottage rental sounds just up your street, there are thousands to choose from in the United States and Canada. The Great Lakes are a particularly fine place to go. There are excellent locations in the Finger Lakes region of New York state and along Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

You will not regret going on holiday to an inland beach cottage rental property. There are so many variations that there is certainly something for every pocket and every family size. Singles are not so well catered for, but if you want a quiet holiday alone. maybe to study, then this might fitting be for you too.

You can fly into some of these resorts by seaplane, but it is more likely that you will take your own car or a rental car, if you want to get out and do some exploring further afield. Personally, I would rather hire a dinghy.

Senior Golf Vacation Packages

If you are looking for senior golf vacation packages where you can get golf lessons, a friendly game of golf or watch a PGA Tour, you might look on the Internet to see where the best places would be. You could travel to Arizona, Hawaii, Bermuda or Myrtle Beach.

You can have some exciting rounds of golf when you book a senior golf package that involves accommodation, airfare and a few days of golf. You will not only enjoy your golf, but the many attractions in the area as well. Vacation packages are remarkable and when they include golf at a very prominent club, you will have an even better time.

Myrtle Beach has some of the most impressive golf vacation packages with diverse activities built into each one. You can play the Big Cat and even have a lesson or two from the former Senior Golf Tour player Gary Cowan. Gary Cowan was the winner of two majors and had eight appearances in other majors.

You may prefer the Big Cat package, the Fanatic golfer package or the four rounds and three-night package. The latter is for the true golfer. Four days of golf and only three-nights in the hotel is what you get in this holiday package.

In Maui, you can play one of the courses designed by Robert Trent Jones; enjoy a day in the warm sun and experience a golf course like you have never experienced before. You can stay at the Kaanapali Beach hotel and take the short walk to the golf course.

The two courses are a senior golfer’s delight. The South Course has an executive style, but with little complexity whereas the North Course runs through the foothills and along the beach and is considered a challenging golf course. It is also home to the PGA Tour.

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, you might like to try the senior golf vacation package to Bermuda. With nine golf courses spread out on twenty-one acres of land, you will find that this is one of the most exceptional experiences of a lifetime. You can choose from fourteen hotels and resorts that offer senior golf vacation packages. With sea all around, you will feel the warm breeze and smell the ocean as you enjoy a great game of golf. Many vacation packages include at least one day of golf, but you can find holiday package deals with more days as well.

However, the story of senior golf vacation packages does not end there. You could enjoy a trip to Arizona where you can find some of the leading golfing schools. The golf courses in the area put on the PGA and the LPGA. The Scottsdale area is crammed with many senior friendly golf courses that will intrigue even the skilled golfer.

Not only do you have the game of golf, but some of the best leisure activity is on hand in the area as well. You can arrange a senior golf outing anywhere you can find a great package deal and professional lessons.

Honeymoon On St Croix

After your wedding day, your honeymoon is one of the most memorable times of your life and so must surely count as one of best holidays you will ever have. It is the beginning of a new life with the person you love. As such it is a good reason to visit somewhere you have always wanted to go, somewhere very special.

One of the most popular places for people to go to on a honeymoon is St Croix, The US Virgin Islands, in the Caribbean.

The Caribbean is the first choice for many newly weds for various reasons: the romance, the people are happy and welcoming, the sand, sea and sunshine, the food and the music. St Croix in the US Virgin Islands is one of the favourite destinations in the Caribbean islands.

St Croix has beautiful beaches and that perfect tropical climate that is so appropriate for a wonderful honeymoon. The hotels and the island’s inhabitants love to take care of newly weds and go out of their way to make sure that the honeymooners have the time of their lives – a holiday that they will remember affectionately for ever.

Cost is always a factor when one is planning a honeymoon in the Caribbean, but you do not have not be too worried on that front. A honeymoon on St Croix need not be costly and as it is only 1,300 miles from the USA, so travel costs and travel time are low.

You will not have trouble finding somewhere on the island to suit your desires. However, St Croix is a popular honeymoon destination, especially for Americans, so it is worth booking your honeymoon holiday as early as possible in order to obtain the reservation that you want.

There are three main types of places to stay: a hotel, a vacation rental or a holiday home. The difference between a vacation rental and a holiday home is that the former is a condo or villa purpose built for holiday makers, whereas the holiday home is actually somebody’s house who has let it out for a short period.

When planning your honeymoon, you should think about when you will go away. It was traditional to leave for the honeymoon after a short reception on the day of the wedding, but many couples postpone their departure date nowadays. Over the last few decades, it has become the standard to hold an extensive reception hours after the wedding, often at night. This will usually go on until midnight or later, which makes leaving for foreign climes quite difficult. A hangover is not a good travelling companion either.

Therefore, you may want to put your going away date off until two days after the wedding, although I think that flying out on the wedding day is still the best idea. If you choose a holiday home or a vacation rental on St Croix, you will need to make all your own arrangements for getting to the airport, flying to St Croix and getting a taxi from the airport to your place of stay, so I recommend that for this, your first visit to this beautiful island, you take a package holiday, which will take care of you from your local airport to your hotel on St Croix and back again.

The United States Virgin Islands

The US Virgin Islands came into America’s possession in 1917 after Denmark sold the Danish West Indies to it for $25m in gold. At the time, the USA was worried that the Germans would gain control of the islands and use them as a base from which to launch attacks on America.

The status of the US Virgin Islands is one of an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States. This means the residents of the US Virgin Islands are US citizens, but cannot vote in US presidential elections. Therefore, US citizens do not need a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands.

The US Virgin Islands are part virgin Islands archipelago and are located in the Leeward islands of the Lesser Antilles along with the British Virgin Islands. The three main islands of this American territory are called Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas. There is also a much smaller island called Water Island. All together, there are about 60 islands with a total surface area of 133.73 square miles, although most of the islands are uninhabited.

The four main islands of the US Virgin Islands are known to their residents by nicknames. These are ‘Twin City’ (St. Croix); ‘Rock City’ (St. Thomas); ‘Love City’ (St. John) and ‘Small City’ (Water Island) and their total population was 108,612 in the 2000 census.

Since the 1960′s, the islands turned their focus from agriculture to heavy industry and tourism and the US Virgin Islands are a very popular destination for American tourists and honeymooners. It is very easy for Americans to get there because a passport is not required, the islands are only 1,730 miles east south-east of Miami, the currency is the US dollar and everybody speaks English.

The islands enjoy an arid, pleasant climate. The average temperature in the capital, Charlotte Amelie, is 33c in the summer and 30c in the winter. September to November are the wettest months and February and March are the driest. The USVI are subject to hurricanes. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 was particularly devastating, but the islands were also hit in 1998, 1999 and 2008.

Tourism is the industry that most of the islanders are engaged in and about 2,000,000 people visit every year, many of them on cruise liners. St Thomas and St Croix are the best equipped to deal with tourists offering hotels and resorts along with lovely beaches and fine restaurants. Water sports are the main activity, although tourists can also hire horses or jeeps to discover the interior of the US Virgin Islands.

Luxury Sea Cruises

Vacationing on a cruise ship is rightly considered to be elite and luxurious. It is certainly the best kind of vacation that I have ever had. The luxury far surpasses staying in a five star hotel. On the other hand, it is like an elite all inclusive holiday, because once on board, all the entertainment and all your meals are free. Alcoholic drinks must be paid for, but then they are duty free.

If you have never been on a cruise before you really must try it. I would not recommend it as a family vacation, but I have seen families on cruises. Cruising might suit a family with older children or you might find a cruise which is planned with children in mind. However, in my experience, your average cruiser is over 50 and married.

I know that they do 18-30 cruises and all kinds of themed cruises, but if you just go on a normal cruise, most of your fellow passengers will be older. Many of them are commemorating something too – retirement, Golden Wedding Anniversary, 70th birthday, that sort of thing. These people want a peaceful time and do not really want children running around and jumping in and out of the pool. Dinner can be late and the evening’s entertainment is not child orientated either. If you want to take children, look for a specialty cruise.

A cruise is tranquil and all about pampering. Luxury and pampering and world class food. I put on five pounds on a two week cruise and friends said that was abnormally little! I will tell you about the food on my last cruise.

Breakfast lasted from 7 AM to 10 AM and there was a buffet with food from all around the world: fruit, porridge, toast, bacon and eggs, ham, cornflakes and all the variations, sausages, rice, Chinese food, prawns, fish and more. Elevenses started at 11 AM and had tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits, help yourself.

Lunch was a two hour affair starting at 1PM consisting of four courses. There was a choice of set plans, but if you wanted to mix and match you could – I think the plans were only to make it easier for the elderly to make up their minds. With 1,200 people to give food to in two sittings, the waiters try to speed selection up in very subtle ways, but never outwardly. High tea was from 4 to 4:30PM: tea, coffee, cakes, biscuits and sandwiches.

Dinner was at 6:30PM and was a five course meal in the same vein as lunch and at midnight there was a barbecue on deck until 2AM. Everything that was served was first class and there was no restriction at all on how much you could eat.

Entertainment was after dinner and there were two shows to match the two dinner sittings, but you could sit there for both shows if you liked. There was a different show every night ranging from solo artistes to bands. There were theater plays and musical shows, it was very grand. There was also a piano bar playing jazz and a disco every night

I would recommend a cruise to anyone, but it is a good idea to check what sort of cruise you are booking as some are themed and if you do not like the cruise’s theme, you may not get the full enjoyment out of it.

Caribbean Cruises

People work harder these days than ever before. If not physically harder then longer hours and we are entitled to a break from that once in a while. The majority of us go on holiday and we look forward to it months in advance and we plan for it even further ahead. Where do you like to go or what do you like to do? I personally prefer to go on a cruise and a Caribbean cruise is a good choice.

People think a cruise, specially a Caribbean cruise as being expensive, and cruise operators want to uphold that elite image, but I see the cruise as being an up-market all inclusive holiday. Probably, it is the original all inclusive holiday, because once you walk up and off that gang plank, everything aside from drinks is free. Everything and everything is first class hotel style too! We are not talking pizza and chips here, but five or six course meals and five or six times a day.

It is common knowledge, that if you go on a cruise you can expect to gain a pound or two a week (I put on five pounds on my last cruise), unless you do some exercise. What exercise? Cruise liners have swimming pools and gymnasiums! Not only one but several. Some even set aside a deck for running at certain times of the day. There really is no excuse for not exercising on a Caribbean cruise.

Caribbean cruise liners provide more sports facilities than just gymnastics too. In fact, except for horse riding, I think that most sports are catered for. Basketball, volleyball, swimming, clay pigeon shooting, fishing, bird watching … You name it. Caribbean cruise liners also have Internet connections, games machines and full office amenities. During the evenings there are first class shows, often two a night, films in a cinema and a casino.

If you have never been on a Caribbean cruise, it is difficult to explain the amount of luxury that is provided. It is more than a first class hotel. In a first class hotel, you pay first class prices for everything too, but on a Caribbean cruise liner, everything but drinks is free and even drinks are cheap because they are duty-free. The cruise liner will have a shop too where everything it sells is duty free!

Some Caribbean cruises are themed and it is worth noting this fact. Also some times of the year, especially early February are foreseeable. I once naively went on a Caribbean cruise for a fortnight which spanned St Valentine’s day. I was a single man then and the other 1200 were romantic couples. There was only one single woman on the cruise but there was no rapport between us. I did not not enjoy that Caribbean cruise, because people took we under their wing, but it made me think about the time of year when I next booked up.

Caribbean cruises, especially the better ones, will fill up quickly, so this is one holiday that you really ought to book well in advance. A year in advance is not too early. I like to book my Caribbean cruise a year in advance, but put my name down for any last minute cancellations, in case I can pick up a bargain.

Japanese vs. European Languages

Anime is a great cultural item that has made learning Japanese particularly inviting to many English speakers. It is also a big reason that many people in all parts of the world want to learn Japanese.

Others like Japan because of the traditional culture and its deep roots. Even others gravitate to Japan because it is the second largest economy in the world and want to learn Japanese for business reasons.

Japanese can be mastered and you can become proficient in it just like any other language, however, we must remember a few things if we want to truly be successful.

For English speakers, Japanese is a more difficult language to learn because it does not use the roman script and also because there are few cognates.

A language like Spanish, for example, shares many root words with English simply because the two languages have been in greater contact for longer and because English has borrowed a great many amount of words from Latin which is the basis for the Spanish language.

This does not mean that learning Japanese is impossible, but rather that it is a bit more difficult to learn.

However, my best advice for you is to keep your reasons for learning Japanese strong if you want to get far in it.

My best advice to you is to make sure that your reason for learning the foreign language, in this case, Japanese, is a strong one.

Whether you want to have a better glimpse of the Japanese culture and traditions or whether you want to have a better understanding of your favorite anime series, make sure that the desire is strong in your heart for learning Japanese.

Whatever the case may be, remember to keep this reason foremost in your mind and that will help bring the spark to keep you going in the long process which master a foreign language like Japanese entails. Good luck and I hope that you continue to make progress in learning Japanese.

Author Robertson Kunz has a language learning guide: foreign language learning now. Japanese learners: learn fluent Japanese.

Learn Spanish Today

If you are interested in learning a foreign language, you might be interested in Spanish. Why do I say this? Only because Spanish is one of the most commonly studied foreign languages. Especially for English speakers, Spanish is a very popular choice.

In the United States in particular, Spanish communities have grown greatly in recent years leading to an even greater demand for Spanish speaking skills.

You might be interested in learning Spanish because your co-workers already speak it or because you want better job opportunities at your current employment or at a job in the future.

Whatever the case may be, learning a new language can be a rewarding endeavor. This is not to say that it is an easy one, it can be very difficult to learn a foreign language. However, there are a few tips you can be aware of in order to improve upon the process.

If you are trying to learn a new foreign language like Spanish, it is best to study a little bit each day instead of a lot at one time and then not much for a while.

The reason for this is that studying a little bit each day will reduce the time that you need to spend at each study session reviewing the material from before. By doing a little bit each day, you can keep moving along nicely and increasing your knowledge of the language.

This process of a little bit of study each day also increases your ability to adapt to the new language and so you are better able to get a handle on it than if you were to study it every once in a while.

So, for whatever reason you are studying Spanish, I wish you good luck in your studies! It is a great language to learn and can provide you with many rewards if studied properly.
